Microsoft FrontPage 2002 by Randall & Jones Great Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am new to using FrontPage although I have installed other web based software products. The book was easy to follow and gave me the technical details I needed to sink my teeth in and create a a web presence with FrontPage 2002. The book is 914 pages and covered designing web pages, web creation and managment, scripting, and dynamic content, using Linux as a webserver, and databases connectivity. As you can see it goes from the simple creation of web pages to setting up a beefy website. I feel the book is a great reference. As a side note the book does not come with CD.

Editorial Review:

This book covers everything needed to develop and publish professional Web and intranet pages and sites using FrontPage 2002. It provides comprehensive sections on Web server setup and administration and on adding interactivity to Web sites with Active Server Pages and scripting languages such as JavaScript and Visual Basic ScriPART It also tells more advanced readers how to integrate Web sites with databases as well as add Dynamic HTML, XML, and Java applets to their sites.

Google Maps may be the most popular 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Hill gives an upbeat walkthrough of Google's various offerings, that are separate from its search engine. So you might apply to open a Gmail account, for instance. Though, unlike hotmail or Yahoo, there is no automatic approval, so you'll have to wait to see if Google, for reasons of its own, "likes" you. Fundamentally, there seems little advantage of a gmail account over those of other vendors. It certainly isn't the large amount of space you get. For most users, hotmail and yahoo now have perfectly adequate space.

Google Maps is probably the most entrancing offering. It can be mildly addictive to some users, by introducing an easy way to incorporate geographic visualisation into your data. This merging, done with fairly simple coding, is where Google seems to have won a lot of popularity.

Editorial Review:

The primary goal of the GO! Series, aside from teaching computer applications,is ease of implementation, with an approach that is based on clearly-defined projects. A key feature of the book is the use of Microsoft procedural syntax: steps begin with where the action is to take place, followed by the action itself. The instruction is error-free, clearly written, and logically arranged. Try It! exercises teach readers additional skills or new office features that are not included within the instructional portion of the chapter. Ideal for students and individuals seeking a comprehensive, project-based approach to learning the Internet.

Misinformation galore 1 out of 5 stars.
23 of 60 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe that such out-of-date misinformation is actually for sale. It's really well-known that search engines really don't like this program. Search on the web for information and you'll find a lot of people losing their IP addresses, and even their domain names, in search engines. Why would you take the risk of being banned by the major search engines, when it's a fact that the engines recommend to stay away from this stuff? I would not recommend this book at any price. I loved the totally-wrong myths at the end though: "It's a myth that search engines don't like doorway pages." Yeah, search engines really love it when you try to pull tricks like that. Sheesh..

Search Engines 1-2-3 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 15 people found this review helpful.

A must read for marketing managers and individuals who are serious about their companies search engine listings. Mr. Konia takes the mystery out of this very broad field with straight to the point no nonsense explanations and examples. This book explains not only the nuts of bolts of Web Position Gold 2, but also how to effectively implement WPG 2 in a short amount of time. The section relating to link popularity I found particularly useful considering that I was unaware of just how important and effective this is. Two thumbs up!

Editorial Review:

Web Positioning: Maximizing Search Engine Rankings is a hybrid web marketing and technical HTML title for experienced webmasters who are responsible for improving and increasing the traffic to a company's web site. According to UMT Strategies, a division of the Meta Group, "search engines create more awareness about web sites than all advertising combined including banners, newspapers, TV and radio". In 1999 web traffic grew by 300%, and Internet commerce is expected to grow exponentially through 2002 with worldwide sales approaching $60 billion and business-to-business sales in excess of $300 billion. As web pages proliferate in this competitive environment, companies must implement more aggressive search engine optimization strategies to complement advertising and marketing efforts. Improving traffic to a company's web site is one of the most pivotal sales and marketing tools being developed by companies attempting to enhance their e-commerce sales strategy. Increased web traffic and improved web sites equal increased visibility and sales.

Editorial Review:

This guide leads Flash 5 beginners through timed lessons, guaranteeing they will know how to make simple animations at the end of one weekend. The text is lighthearted, but not to the point that it's distracting or annoyingly slow-paced. On the contrary, the encouraging tone makes even the more daunting aspects of Flash, like Bézier curves or the timeline, seem accessible to every user. The simple graphics also add to this tone of "you too can do it."

Each project can be opened from the CD-ROM or recreated following the step-by-step instructions, while the text makes note of the motivations behind each choice--showing not just how to do it, but why. The hypothetical weekend is divided into six parts, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, comprising a total of 30 sessions timed to take readers 30 minutes each to complete. (The author encourages readers not to feel bad if it takes longer. It's possible the opposite will happen; in fact, those with prior drawing experience, for example, will fly quickly through drawing sections.) Along the way, clock icons in the margin announce the number of minutes left to go, like small milestones saying the end is in sight (a good addition for those who struggle with self-discipline).

By the end, readers will feel comfortable with the tools and the timeline, drawing or importing artwork, tween animation, buttons, masks, text animation, working with simple sound layers, working with bitmaps, creating a slide show, and publishing a Flash file. Each session ends with a review and quiz and each part with an even longer review. (Answers to all review and quiz questions are in the back, which in turn makes an easy reference.) In addition to project files, the CD-ROM contains demos of Flash 5 and other Macromedia applications and a full version of the 3-D graphics application Amapi 4.1.

The book is cross-platform, although it's visually slanted more toward Windows users. But any beginner who's looking for a quick and fairly painless introduction to Flash will appreciate this well-organized and reasonably priced guide. --Angelynn Grant

Intermediate book. Expensive. Good tricks. Overview. 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Flash Studio Secrets was insightful but expensive. It's one of those books that are nice to have if you have the money, but enhances books already in your collection. It would not be useful being your only Flash book. The studio/business point of view and analysis of projects were very good, but I think the books suffers from a "Jack of all trades mentality" Then again, maybe that was their target audience for people buying the book. If you want to specialize on just web design, focus just on cartooning or focus on actionscript/gaming, buy another book. If you were looking for a good overview and another perspective to add to your library, this book would be ok.

I found the chapter on sound and programming a good read. Unfortunately there are a few typo's which annoy and the source code promised for the chess game in chapter four is not included on their website. I emailed them for the working version of the chess game they talk about, but am yet to receive an answer. The chapters on edutainment and marketing are also an interesting read. Furthermore, there are some good tricks and ideas mentioned throughout.

This is an intermediate book. This book will generate ideas and let you look at things regarding Flash in a different perspective. Don't buy this book if you're looking to learn how to use the program. This book will give you ideas on how to improve on what you already know and improve your workflow.

Editorial Review:

This stunning, four-color book is built around specific projects with underlying themes that introduce specific points about using Flash. Each project features a world-class Flash designer or organization, and includes a real-world case study detailing the objectives of the project. Each case study includes a description of the techniques and skills used in the project. Also integrated into these chapters would be specific notes on how doing these projects might differ slightly with Flash 5.
