Editorial Review:

Web Positioning: Maximizing Search Engine Rankings is a hybrid web marketing and technical HTML title for experienced webmasters who are responsible for improving and increasing the traffic to a company's web site. According to UMT Strategies, a division of the Meta Group, "search engines create more awareness about web sites than all advertising combined including banners, newspapers, TV and radio". In 1999 web traffic grew by 300%, and Internet commerce is expected to grow exponentially through 2002 with worldwide sales approaching $60 billion and business-to-business sales in excess of $300 billion. As web pages proliferate in this competitive environment, companies must implement more aggressive search engine optimization strategies to complement advertising and marketing efforts. Improving traffic to a company's web site is one of the most pivotal sales and marketing tools being developed by companies attempting to enhance their e-commerce sales strategy. Increased web traffic and improved web sites equal increased visibility and sales.

Weekend 15 Hour Crash and Burn Flash Course 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Unless you expect to spend more than 15 days learning what this crash flash course promises to teach you in 15 hours, you had better run the other way...

I am usually a self starter and highly teachable.... but it took me hours and hours to get through some of these lessons, because I just didn't know any better....

Well if I did, I wouldn't have needed a crash course, now would I?

This book is fraught with problems....and I sit here wondering if ANYONE bothered to proof read it, before sending it to the printers.......???????

If u follow the instructions exactly for building each project, you, more than likely, will not get the desired result......

Let me give you just one example of many......

Session 9, "Building an interactive button"......

The first part of this lesson is devoted to teaching you how to use a mask layer.....which you are to use in building the different states of a button that looks like a sun. The mask layer is supposed to change the degree to which the sun's eyes are open......
and what you put in front of his eyes on the model is supposed to ultimately have
a reverse effect in the final product... so I went all out and made a very nice looking
sun, if I do say so myself...
Well it looked fine in the symbols library box.. but when I went to view my movie... the mask didn't work.. and what I ended up with was a sun with silly playdoh looking things in front of it's eyes......

I tried for hours, re-doing the lesson from the start over and over, trying to get it to work right.....to no avail.......

It took me hours more of scouring through other books for the possible cause, and I finally found it in the help section of the flash program itself ( WHAT A CONCEPT ! )....and what I found out was that it is impossible to do.....
Because, you CAN"T do a mask layer on a button !!
It tells you right there in help....

Well I scrapped the button, but realized I would need one to finish the important part of the project...which was learning to make an 'interactive' button.... so I decided my time was too valuable top do one again... and the best thing to do at that
moment was to cheat...
So I went to the CD to get the button there, to finish the rest of the project.. and Lo and behold it only gets worse.....

Had I seen the button the author built in the projects folder on the CD that came with the book PRIOR to starting the project, I would have gotten to the crux of the problem a lot sooner, because, instead of thinking that it was "I" that just couldn't get the mask to work....I would have known it was not... for sitting there plain as day.. is the 'author's' sun button.. with the silly playdoh looking things over 'IT's' eyes !!!
Did ANYONE bother to check this CD before it went to the burners???

I won't take too much of Our time going over other major bloopers that are contained within these pages....

But will just close by saying that, although the lesson plans do build nicely on giving you what you need to learn how to do many things with the program, the mis direction makes it impossible to learn what you should learn in `15 hours... and unless you are inventive, persevering, and have other books and resources, you may never learn it at all.....

I wish i could get my very hard earned money back....
But thought i would write this to keep you from spending yours...

On the other hand check out Flash 5 virtual classroom...
and the Flash Bible....
You're less apt to crash and burn with those.........

Editorial Review:

This book gets readers up-to-speed with the latest version of Macromedia Flash in just a weekend. It consists of 30 learning sessions over a period of three days. Each session is designed to take 30 minutes to complete, so the Crash Course is an intense 15-hour learning period beginning on Friday evening and ending on Sunday afternoon. Naturally, readers can adapt their learning to whatever schedule best suits their needs, but the message that a reader with no prior programming experience can learn the language or development environment in one weekend will be carried throughout the book.

Intermediate book. Expensive. Good tricks. Overview. 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Flash Studio Secrets was insightful but expensive. It's one of those books that are nice to have if you have the money, but enhances books already in your collection. It would not be useful being your only Flash book. The studio/business point of view and analysis of projects were very good, but I think the books suffers from a "Jack of all trades mentality" Then again, maybe that was their target audience for people buying the book. If you want to specialize on just web design, focus just on cartooning or focus on actionscript/gaming, buy another book. If you were looking for a good overview and another perspective to add to your library, this book would be ok.

I found the chapter on sound and programming a good read. Unfortunately there are a few typo's which annoy and the source code promised for the chess game in chapter four is not included on their website. I emailed them for the working version of the chess game they talk about, but am yet to receive an answer. The chapters on edutainment and marketing are also an interesting read. Furthermore, there are some good tricks and ideas mentioned throughout.

This is an intermediate book. This book will generate ideas and let you look at things regarding Flash in a different perspective. Don't buy this book if you're looking to learn how to use the program. This book will give you ideas on how to improve on what you already know and improve your workflow.

Editorial Review:

This stunning, four-color book is built around specific projects with underlying themes that introduce specific points about using Flash. Each project features a world-class Flash designer or organization, and includes a real-world case study detailing the objectives of the project. Each case study includes a description of the techniques and skills used in the project. Also integrated into these chapters would be specific notes on how doing these projects might differ slightly with Flash 5.

A Critical Guide (and the best) to Google 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'm a research junkie -- have been almost all my life. My entrance essay for law school was about my various research projects. It worked -- I graduated from Harvard Law School in 1986.

Mr. Busby's book provided a critical guide to Google, showing much more independence of thought than "Google for Dummies" and "How to Do Everything with Google." His approach to the subject included technical information that I found much more user friendly than "Google Hacks" and "A Pocket Guide to Google."

I appreciated the tips on ancillary search issues including such topics as firewalls, Zone Alarm and Mcafee Visual Trace. I also appreciated the way he experimented with different search techniques to see what Google would let you do. It encouraged me to be brave when googling.

I definitely enjoyed the humor, including the last page of the Internet. The Search Challenge was great fun and I learned numerous search techniques from taking the challenge.

Learn Google is undoubtedly the best Google book on the market.

Editorial Review:

This book is the only book of its kind on the market covering how to use the basic, intermediate, and advanced search modifiers Google makes available to users.

Anyone who plugs in a Mac whether it's the proud owner of the very latest version or someone still tapping away on yesterday's model usually finds these machines to be an immensely popular and beneficial tool. Unfortunately, they can also be a royal pain in the neck. Any way you slice it, Macs still have a tendency to induce minor headaches at the most inopportune times. Mac Annoyances feels your pain. Contained within its pages are hidden (plus well-documented) tips, tricks, and workarounds designed to drastically improve specific problem-solving capabilities. The result: a significant enhancement of the overall user experience and a tremendous savings of time no matter which version you own. What does Mac Annoyances cover? Also tackled: how to overcome problems related to specific applications such as iTunes, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Apple's Mail program. Having trouble browsing the Web or searching with Google? Want to make your Mac a bit faster? Keyboard causing you trouble? These and dozens more annoyances like them are all dissected as well. Truth is, if you've experienced it, Mac Annoyances addresses it. Written by top-flight author and renowned Mac expert, John Rizzo, this book is a follow-up to the bestselling PC Annoyances. In keeping with the spirit of O'Reilly's Annoyances series, Rizzo adopts a sympathetic tone throughout the book that quickly ingratiates itself to readers.
