Editorial Review:

THE POWER OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. THE PASSION OF THE PSALMS. THE WISDOM OF THE PROVERBS.

Many people assume that a book about a holy God should sound elevated, stately, and ceremonial. If this is how you've always viewed the Bible, you're about to make a surprising discovery.

The Message brings the life-changing power of the New Testament, the vibrant passion of the Psalms, and the rich, practical wisdom of Proverbs into easy-to-read modern language that echoes the rhythm and idioms of the original Greek and Hebrew. Written in the same kind of language you'd use to talk with friends, write a letter, or discuss politics, The Message preserves the authentic, earthy flavor and the expressive character of the Bible's best-loved books.

Whether you've been reading the Bible for years or are exploring it for the first time, The Message will startle and surprise you. And it will allow you to experience firsthand the same power and directness that motivated its original readers to change the course of history so many centuries ago.

"The Bible must be readable and relevant in all times, to all peoples. Eugene Peterson's language accomplishes this and more: it makes our Holy Scripture also exciting and strong, sweet, sharp, persuasive, painful, personal, contemporary, kind, dramatic-and available to every reader of this age, this society. His love and skill are new blood in the Eternal Story."-Walter Wangerin, Jr., author of The Book of Dun Cow and Mourning into Dancing

"I thank God for The Message. In it Eugene Peterson gives a fresh and authentic voice to the Scripture. I recommend it highly."-Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline

"Time and again I would read a verse and think, 'Oh, that's what it means.' Eugene Peterson has given us the gift of a lifetime."-Rebecca Manley Pippert, author of Out of the Saltshaker and Hope Has Its Reasons

"In this crowded world of Bible versions, Eugene Peterson's blend of accurate scholarship and vivid idiom make this rendering both distinctive and distinguished. The Message catches the logical flow, personal energy, and imaginative overtones of the original very will indeed. It's a landmark and a triumph. Don't miss it!"-J.I. Packer, author of Knowing God and professor of theology, Regent College

Guess what? A lot of people really like Hemingway. There are those who have never studied or even read another great author of the 20th century who has read Hem. This book was published after his death and I wonder if this wasn't something he wrote for his own kind of fun to attack and belittle everyone he knew in those years. Almost a practice writing exercise with malicious intent: read it carefully, F. Scott is famously viscously trashed but so is every single person he meets. My feeling is that if he was in his right mind - if you were to read anything about his last years he was in very bad shape - he would have destroyed this before he killed himself.

An Opinion Humbly Submitted 5 out of 5 stars.

It seems incredibly vain to write a review of A Moveable Feast. People study it in college, dissertations have been written and PhD.'s awarded. But Amazon gives everybody a shot at anything and if there's any virtue in that approach, it may be that it allows for small-scale observations like this one:

A person learning to write should read this book attentively. The simple encouragement about writing 'one true sentence' is good for the soul. Got block? Just write one true sentence: you can and you should. You, writer should also pay attention to the value of writing about something when you are away from it and when you've known it well enough.
And then there's the whole bit about ornament and flourishes. Hemingway says that he cut them all away, but of course that's the furthest thing from the truth. A Moveable Feast is full of flourishes in the form of details that are sparingly crafted and added to the narrative because they make the whole thing more alive. You might find that you've forgotten everything he said about Zelda but remember vividly the details of heating a small rented room in Paris.

It's hard to read this book without wanting to put it down and tell someone something about a vividly remembered detail of your life: the smell of a clean fuzzy dog or the feeling of standing on the deck of a ship as it goes east through the North Atlantic in winter. And of course, you'll want to do it with one true sentence.

Lynn Hoffman, author of Bang Bang

Editorial Review:

Hemingway's memories of his life as an unknown writer living in Paris in the 1920s are deeply personal, warmly affectionate and full of wit. He recalls the time when, poor, happy and writing in cafes, he discovered his vocation.

A curiosity 1 out of 5 stars.

What a strange publication! The doctored version of the RSV with the Greek text in the order of the English words. I cannot see how this book can really benefit anyone other than a complete amateur. But... the grammatical information for the Greek text really is quite useful. The transliteration is handy for those too lazy to learn the Greek alphabet. Strong's numbers might be useful to some. Maybe the biggest blow is the fact that the CD-ROM is only for Windows. We Mac users are once again left in the cold.
For those seriously interested in the Greek text, I would suggest purchasing an copy of The New Greek English Interlinear NT by Brown and Comfort together with a good dictionary. If your Greek is that bad, you certainly will not need the grammatical information.
For those serious about their study, try the Nestle-Aland Greek-English New Testament - the Novum Testamentum Graece together with the real RSV and sumptuous notes.
By all means purchase this book. It will certainly impress your friends if it is placed on the coffee table.

The only spiritual book you'll ever need. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Emmet Fox once paid Florence Scoville Schinn (see "The Game of Life and How to Play It") a great compliment by writing that her works were accessible even to those who did not wish to devote their attention to deeper study. I believe that's true also of "The Sermon on the Mount."

For Christians seeking deeper faith and understanding without committing years to reading the Bible, attending weekly church services, or joining a Bible study group, try this book. Since I was little, I've felt strongly that Jesus is my link to joy and knowing. I've been drawn to the Book of Matthew as the story of Jesus that most resonates with me, and to the Sermon on the Mount as the essence of the teachings of Jesus.

Fox's treatment of the Sermon on the Mount, section by section, provides the key to understanding the entire Bible. It's easy to read and, more importantly, every paragraph and every sentence stands alone as a complete message about what's facing me today.

For those of a metaphysical bent, you can hardly find a more complete, more accurate, simpler statement of truth. My dowsing rates this book higher on the Hawkins scale than any book I've ever encountered.

For those emersed in "A Course in Miracles," Fox has written the pocket version - easy to carry and study - and the perfect introduction to those with whom we'd like to share The Course.

For those working the twelve steps, know that Fox's writings inspired Bill Wilson. Read "The Sermon on the Mount" as a loving companion to the Big Book.

You can read other books by Fox if you'd like, or other great works by other inspired spiritual writers, but you only NEED this one.

Editorial Review:

Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.

Disingenuous 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is the second Lee Strobel book I have read. It is clear, as many people have pointed out, that even though Lee presents himself as a seeker who is earnestly trying to find the truth, this is a facade.

As a thinking Christian, I have been troubled by many of the issues Lee brings up in his books. I have yet found no simple answers. Yes, research has shown that Mithras was basically an A.D. Religion. But other mystery religions are not so easily dismissed.

The fact that Lee interviews one side, and declares them the winner, is disingenuous to me. A true investigative journalist would interview both sides, and then decide. It is even clear from his "thoughts", as he is interviewing people, that he already has decided the outcome.

One specific example that irritates me: Was Isaiah 7:14 a messianic prophecy? "A young woman(virgin) will conceive and bring forth a son...". Anyone who has studied the context of this prophesy knows that this was specifically intended for the IMMEDIATE future. Not for Jesus born 700 years later. There's no way around this(unless you believe in dual prophecy). Michael Brown responds to the challenge by saying "No one knows what this prophecy exactly meant". Yet Lee Strobel accepts this explanation!!!! HUH?!! How in the world could you accept this explanation, if you were truly undecided. The only way is, you already have your mind made up.

Bottom line is, you can be for or against something. But please be upfront, and don't pretend to undecided, when in fact, you are not.

Editorial Review:

From college classrooms to bestselling books to the Internet, the historic picture of Jesus is under an intellectual onslaught. This fierce attack on the traditional portrait of Christ has confused spiritual seekers and created doubt among many Christians – but can these radical new claims and revisionist theories stand up to sober scrutiny?

Many Pluses and a Few Minuses 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I received a review copy from publisher Thomas Nelson and have been working through it. My thoughts:

What is The Voice?

It's a new Bible retelling and commentary created by the Ecclesia Bible Society (launched out of Ecclesia Church in Houston) and Thomas Nelson Publishers. It strives to maintain the original character of the authors, whereas many Bible translations strive to give a more consistent style across all books. The preface says The Voice is holistic (considers heart, soul, and mind), beautiful (achieves literary and artistic excellence), sensitive (respects cultural shifts and the need for accuracy), and balanced (includes theologically diverse writers and scholars).

What I Like

* Its narrative style and artistic sensibility makes it very readable, but not watered down. It's modern and accessible, and usually without falling into the more gimmicky wording that sometimes befalls The Message.
* Dialogue is formatted in screenplay style. In a traditionally-formatted translation, Luke 1:60-61 reads
But his mother answered and said, "No indeed; but he shall be called John." And they said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name" (NASB).
But in The Voice it reads
Elizabeth (disagreeing): No. We will name him John.
Her Relatives (protesting): That name is found nowhere in your family.
* The Voice uses informational boxes in-line with the text rather than as footnotes. It's a much better reading experience and allows the reader's eyes to keep tracking along the page instead of constantly bouncing up and down the page to look at the footnotes. An example of one of these info boxes, from John 8:4: "Imagine the tension in that moment. You can sense the sarcasm in the air as these men threatening Jesus are now calling Him `Teacher.' Jesus knew this was a test."

What I Dislike

* It's not a translation but a retelling. Additional text is added to clarify the meaning and is indicated with italics. For example, John 8:8-9 reads like this in the NASB:
Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court.
And in The Voice:
Once again Jesus bent down to the ground and resumed writing with His finger. The Pharisees who heard Him stood still for a few moments and then began to leave slowly, one by one, beginning with the older men. Even the pious Pharisees knew they had sinned, so there would be no stones thrown this day. Eventually only Jesus and the woman remained, and Jesus looked up.
The Voice doesn't claim to be a literal translation, so it's not misleading to include this additional text since it's clearly marked (the Amplified Version does this too). However, it's a little like releasing an amplified version of A Tale of Two Cities that begins, "It was the best of times because the rulers and ruling classes lived in opulence, but it was the worst of times because the masses were being oppressed and hurtling toward revolution." It does give more explanation, but there's a lot lost in the process as well.
* The informational boxes are inconsistent in their pronoun usage and narration. The boxes in John are in first person ("My life changed that day; there was a new clarity about how I was supposed to live.") but in third person in Luke ("More than any other Gospel writer, Luke wants to situate the story...") and elsewhere.
* The terminology is sometimes forced, such as the repeated use of Liberating King (instead of Messiah or Christ), John the Immerser (instead of John the Baptist or John the Baptizer), and "ritually cleansed" instead of baptized or immersed. I appreciate the intent to make the language more accessible to those who are unfamiliar with some of the more explicitly religious terminology, but too often it comes across as forced and clunky rather than smooth and understandable.

The Voice is a mixed bag with much in its favor but some important weaknesses as well.

Editorial Review:

This new book argues that the four Gospels are closely based on eyewitness testimony of those who knew Jesus. Noted New Testament scholar Richard Bauckham challenges the prevailing assumption that the accounts of Jesus circulated as "anonymous community traditions," asserting instead that they were transmitted in the name of the original eyewitnesses. To drive home this controversial point, Bauckham draws on internal literary evidence, study of personal names in the first century, and recent developments in the understanding of oral traditions.

Jesus and the Eyewitnesses also taps into the rich resources of modern study of memory and cognitive psychology, refuting the conclusions of the form critics and calling New Testament scholarship to make a clean break with this long-dominant tradition. Finally, Bauckham challenges readers to end the classic division between the "historical Jesus" and the "Christ of faith," proposing instead the "Jesus of testimony." Sure to ignite heated debate on the precise character of the testimony about Jesus, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses will be valued by scholars, students, and all who seek to understand the origins of the Gospels.

Jesus said... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have long believed that the way Jesus said to live was more important than his immortality (or mine). I knew our "Founders" didn't base our constitution on "Judea-Christian values", as is frequently proposed by some
political/religious leaders, but on principles of the Enlightenment which they believed would bring a new kind of government, free of religious oppression, first to America, and then to the world.

The only books on the subject are very large, very scholarly, very informative, but... how nice to have this little book on my coffee table where curious minds can explore the thinking of one of America's most forward looking leaders, and read just the words of Jesus, without the mythology attached to his death by future theologians.

The preface, the introduction and chapter about Jefferson's contemporaries is a history lesson every
American should review. No-one who has visited my home has found it in any way offensive, but all
find it enlightening !

Editorial Review:

In 1816, Thomas Jefferson gathered together sections of the Bible and arranged them in a certain order by time or subject. Its teachings influenced his statesmanship and certainly contributed to his larger concept for building an improved society. This reference opens a fascinating window into the mind of one of our country's most important social architects.

A very liberal and PC study Bible 1 out of 5 stars.
21 of 31 people found this review helpful.

The Bible commentaries are written from a decidedly liberal theological perspective. It is obvious that the authors believe the Bible is just a product of ancient myths and storytelling. They disbelieve miracles and explain away prophecy by assigning late dates for the books. Their notes are not balanced and really does not present opposing points of view or evidence to the contrary. More a work of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish propaganda than a balanced, scholarly work. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it. Instead, I would recommend the NIV Study Bible or NKJV Study Bible.

Editorial Review:

The new Annotated is a complete revision of Oxford's classic study Bible, and the first such resource to incorporate the full text of the acclaimed New Revised Standard Version Bible. The features of this enhanced resource include: expanded notes and essays compiled by top scholars, including seven new essays on major subdivisions, a new introductory essay by Bruce Metzger on how to use the new Annotated in reading and study, and a better organized book design. Also included is a 36-page indexed map section featuring Oxford's world famous Bible maps. The new Annotated is sensitive to inclusive language. It is an invaluable resource for students, scholars, religious educators, and pastors for personal and group study. The new Annotated is available in editions with and without the Apocrypha, and in fine leather bindings.
