Deeply comforting, a short read but extremely powerful to all of those who have lost a loved one. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This tiny book (only 82 pages) offers the kind of hope all those who have been devastated by the loss of a loved one so often seek and seldom find. It should, of course, be read as an adjunct to Kubler-Ross' later book On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss It is the seventeenth (17th) book about grief and grieving that I have read since my father left this world for the next almost six months ago. I have found it to be the most moving. The author, now deceased herself, was a physician who worked for years with dying adults and children, not only believed but was CONVINCED that there IS life after death and there ARE people awaiting us "who died before you, who loved and treasured you a lot". This theme has been repeated in a number of works about grief including Don Piper's 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life, Don Piper, himself a Bapist minister who actually reportedly died for 90 minutes and came back to life convinced of the existence of a beautiful afterlife.
A University of Michigan educated Masters level social worker (MSW) for 29 years I STRONGLY recommend this book for all those who grieve and for the mental health and pastoral professionals who work to help them.
The book concludes with the words "Death is but a transition from this life to another existence where there is no more pain and anguish." This is linked with the author's previous reference to "the death of a human body...identical to what happens when the butterfly emerges from a cocoon....Dying is only moving from one house into a more beautiful one....As soon as the cocoon in an irreparable condition--be it from suicide, murder, heart attack or chronic disease, it doesn't matter how it happened--it will release the butterfly, your soul so to speak....when you die...the connection between the cocoon and the butterfly...will be severed. After this, it is not possible to return to the earthly body. But you wouldn't want to return to it anyway, for after seeing the light nobody wants to go back...Here there is understanding without judging, and here you experience unconditional love....God is unconditional love."

Editorial Review:

In this collection of inspirational essays, internationally known author Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross draws on her in-depth research of more than 20,000 people who had near-death experiences, revealing the afterlife as a return to wholeness of spirit. With frank and compassionate advice for those dealing with terminal illness or the death of a loved one, ON LIFE AFTER DEATH offers a compelling message of hope to the living, so that they may grow stronger from tragedy and live life to the fullest.

Leading The Known Universe In Frequent Flier Miles To The Other Side 5 out of 5 stars.

If this book doesn't change your paradigm on life and death, you are hopelessly entrenched in a stagnant, antiquated belief system. If Dannion was accepted by the light, with his life on earth, the rest of us have nothing to worry about. His life, death, recovery and transformation makes this book hard to put down.

The one line in the book I always come back to, is when Dannion is out of his body, looking down as the EMTs are loading his lifeless physical body into the ambulance, and he is thinking, "Gee, I thought I was better looking than that!" Nice touch Dannion.

Editorial Review:

The Classic That Changed Our Perception of the Afterlife

In 1975, Dannion Brinkley was struck and killed by lightning. When he awoke twenty-eight minutes later in a morgue, everything was different. He had visited the afterlife, met thirteen angels, and been given 117 revelations about the future. In the years since, one hundred of the revelations have already come true. In Saved by the Light, now available in trade paperback for the first time, Brinkley shares his incredible story, revealing the truth about the afterlife and providing guidance from beyond about how we should live today.

Life Changing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was not only healing but an inspiration that led my husband and I to animal rescue work. Working with local shelters and rescue groups, we provide a final home and end-of-life care for small animals that are too emotionally or physically ill to be successfully adopted into the average household. Our current "furry crew" consists of rabbits, chinchillas, fancy rats, gerbils, a mouse, a dwarf hamster, as well as the resident matriarch, our white-face cockatiel Pheonix.

Editorial Review:

Kim Sheridan grew up with animals as her constant companions. Each time she faced the death of a beloved pet, along with the pain came the same questions, to which she could find no answers. Then, mysterious things began to happen that she couldn’t explain, which led her on an incredible journey to uncover the truth. Along with her own extraordinary experiences, she compiled heartwarming and meaningful true stories of everyday people around the world, and discovered compelling evidence that forever erased her own doubts about an afterlife for animals.

This book provides enormous comfort and reassurance to anyone who has ever cherished a pet, and food for thought for anyone who has ever questioned the place of these beloved creatures in the larger scheme of things, both here on Earth and beyond.

Editorial Review:

Despite our advancements in science and medicine, death remains one of human civilization's most glorious mysteries. A handful of doctors have written books on phenomena such as near-death experiences, but research and data is scarce on pre-death experiences. Because of this lack of information, Dr. John Lerma has devoted his career to compiling anecdotal and scientific research on pre-death hallucinations from the countless terminally-ill patients he lovingly cares for as a doctor and director at The Medical Center of Houston, Texas.

Now, in the groundbreaking book, Into The Light, Dr. Lerma shares his valuable research and guidance in 16 inspirational stories of children and adults confronting their deaths through the comforting visions of divine beings. By presenting these mysterious visions, synchronicities, and angelic conversations terminally ill patients encounter, Dr. Lerma shows how knowledge of death can ease the pain and fear as we prepare to enter into the light.

In this book you will learn:

* The exhilarating and calming elements of pre-death experiences.

* Healing during the dying process.

* The difference between hallucinations and visions.

* Self-forgiveness and self-love as the key to a joyous life and a peaceful transition.

The mystical experiences described here delve into: the creation of the universe, past and future extinctions, dark angels and white angels, selfless suffering and its effect on humanity, free will as the vital ingredient to create on earth and in heaven, and many more incredible revelations. The poignant stories in Into the Light will leave you feeling uplifted in faith, hope, and love.

Editorial Review:

Not since Betty Eadie’s Embraced by the Light has a personal account of a Near-Death Experience (NDE) been so utterly different from most others—or nearly as compelling.

In the thirty years since Raymond Moody’s Life After Life appeared, a familiar pattern of NDEs has emerged: suddenly floating over one’s own body, usually in a hospital setting, then a sudden hurtling through a tunnel of light toward a presence of love. Not so in Howard Storm’s case.

Storm, an avowed atheist, was awaiting emergency surgery when he realized that he was at death’s door. Storm found himself out of his own body, looking down on the hospital room scene below. Next, rather than going “toward the light,” he found himself being torturously dragged to excruciating realms of darkness and death, where he was physically assaulted by monstrous beings of evil. His description of his pure terror and torture is unnerving in its utter originality and convincing detail.

Finally, drawn away from death and transported to the realm of heaven, Storm met angelic beings as well as the God of Creation. In this fascinating account, Storm tells of his “life review,” his conversation with God, even answers to age-old questions such as why the Holocaust was allowed to take place. Storm was sent back to his body with a new knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth. This book is his message of hope.

"This is a book you devour from cover to cover, and pass on to others. This is a book you will quote in your daily conversation. Storm was meant to write it and we were meant to read it."

-From the foreward by Anne Rice

As I lay on the ground, my tormentors swarming around me, a voice emerged from my chest. It sounded like my voice, but it wasn’t a thought of mine. I didn’t say it. The voice that sounded like my voice, but wasn’t, said, “Pray to God.” I remember thinking, “Why? What a stupid idea. That doesn’t work. What a cop-out . . .”

That voice said it again, “Pray to God!” It was more definite this time. I wasn’t sure what to do. Praying, for me as a child, had been something I had watched adults doing. It was something fancy and had to be done just so. I tried to remember prayers from my childhood experiences in Sunday school. Prayer was something you memorized. What could I remember from so long ago? Tentatively, I murmured a line, which was a jumble from the Twenty-third Psalm, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and “God Bless America,” and whatever other churchly sounding phrases came to mind.

“Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. For purple mountain majesty, mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. Deliver us from evil. One nation under God. God Bless America.”

To my amazement, the cruel, merciless beings tearing the life out of me were incited to rage by my ragged prayer. It was as if I were throwing boiling oil on them. They screamed at me, “There is no God! Who do you think you’re talking to? Nobody can hear you! Now we are really going to hurt you.” They spoke in the most obscene language, worse than any blasphemy said on earth. But at the same time, they were backing away.

Real-life psychic, near-death, and paranormal experiences are combined with cutting-edge science and vivid adventure stories in this energetic look at why extreme athletes and mountaineers take the risks that allow them to push the limits of consciousness, and what they encounter there.

In the life-or-death world of extreme adventure sports, there is one thing that athletes often keep quiet about: the “forbidden” territory of paranormal experiences. Ranging from fleeting moments of transcendence to full-blown encounters with ghosts and everything in between—visions, near-death experiences, psychic communication—many extreme athletes have experienced these moments of connection with the beyond, but have been reluctant to talk about them.

In Explorers of the Infinite, award-winning outdoors journalist and lifelong adventure sports devotee Maria Coffey probes the mystical and paranormal experiences of mountaineers, snowboarders, surfers, and more. She reviews cutting-edge science, and consults the history of philosophy and spirituality to answer the question: Could the state of intense “aliveness” that is the allure of extreme sports for so many actually be a route to a connection with the beyond?

Coffey investigates the scientific explanations for mystical phenomena, ranging from simple explanations to theories from consciousness studies and quantum physics, and leaves us wondering where science ends and spirituality begins.

An energetic, you-are-there look at the spiritual lives of extreme athletes, Explorers of the Infinite asks why extreme athletes take the risks that allow them to push the limits of consciousness, what they encounter there, and what we can learn from them.

Sometimes, It Takes Losing Everything to Gain What Really Matters

To an outsider, Lisa Reed seemed to have it all: A high-powered real-estate career. Two beautiful children. A gorgeous husband. A luxurious home, fancy cars and a fashionable wardrobe. Not bad considering just a few years earlier she was what some would call a "welfare mom."

Still, there was a problem-spiritually, she was empty.

Then, one summer's day in 2005, tragedy struck in the form of a boating accident. She wasn't supposed to live. But twenty-eight days later, Lisa emerged from the intensive care unit. Doctors said she was like a miracle. Lisa knew she was.

What happened next has made her a case study for anyone who's ever let the material world get in the way. After a near death experience, Lisa set out to reveal the divine intervention at work in our everyday lives. In Divinely Blessed, she shows us how to recognize it by exploring how heavenly guidance appeared throughout her own troubled young adulthood. The result is an engaging and eye-opening look at the myriad ways in which God cares for us all. Divinely Blessed is sure to open the eyes of anyone who reads it.

Editorial Review:

An intellectual tour de force; the most comprehensive
reference book for the near-death phenomenon.
The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences encompasses every aspect of the near-death phenomenon: the experience, aftereffects, and implications. Atwater's simple, appealing format includes drawings and cartoons by Spirit Painter and Chuck Vadun and sidebars from experts. She investigates and reports on the power of changed lives, the reality of deceased who come back, visitors at death's edge, out-of-body travel, the expansion of normal faculties, the awesome presence of Deity and the importance of spirituality.

The Sourcebook examines near-death studies from the "Moody Miracle" early days, through the myths of "the light at the end of the tunnel" and "the religion of the resuscitated," to 2007. After 32 years of work with clinical prospective studies in several countries, the reality of the near-death experience has been verified, confirming its importance in the study of consciousness.

Death Is A Pleasant Experience 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to die? Have you ever wondered about "near death experiences" or "out of body experiences"? Then this is book is for you.

Sam Parnia, MD, PhD in "What Happens When We Die" covers the history of near-death experiences (NDEs), the results of studies to date on NDEs, conventional and non-conventional theories on what causes NDEs, and implications for future research of NDEs, including his own on-going scientific study.

Near-death experiences are characterized by:
1. An experience of peace, well-being, and an absence of pain.
2. A sense of detachment from the physical body, progressing to and out-of-body experience.
3. Entering darkness, a tunnel experience with panoramic memory, and a predominately positive effect.
4. An experience of light that is bright, warm, and attractive
5. Entering the light; meeting persons or figures

At present, NDEs, and whether they are real of not, depends on the social group that is asked. If we question those people who have had an NDE, they mostly believe that it is real experience, whereas if a group of skeptics is asked, they will say they are not. We do know that a near-death experience has a profoundly religious impact on those who experience it, and many of them perform altruistic acts afterward.

Parnia concludes that at the very least, the dying process is a pleasant experience for the majority. He also concludes that the mind and consciousness may exist separately from the brain and also, during, and at least for some time, after death. This connection or lack thereof has significant implications for ethics, theology, and philosophy.

My father had a NDE several years before he died. I have had a deep interest in this subject ever since. "What Happens When We Die" integrates medicine, science, and first person stories to provide the best overview of the subject to date.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Sam Parnia faces death every day. Through his work as a critical-care doctor in a hospital emergency room, he became very interested in some of his patients’ accounts of the experiences that they had while clinically dead. He started to collect these stories and read all the latest research on the subject, and then he decided to conduct his own experiments. That work has culminated in this extraordinary book, which picks up where Raymond Moody’s Life After Life left off.

Written in a scientific, balanced, and engaging style, this is powerful and compelling reading.

This fascinating and controversial book
will change the way you look at death and dying. . . .
