Description:
The current study investigated aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder and attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among hoarders. Compared to a sample of 36 controls, hoarders (n=26) reported a significantly greater number of different types of trauma, more frequent traumatic experiences, more symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and greater comfort derived from possessions. These findings are consistent with previous reports of extensive comorbidity associated with hoarding behaviors, and may reflect the potential usefulness of assessing PTSD and ADHD symptoms at the outset of hoarding treatments, as well as considering alternative pharmacological interventions.

We can model self-reliance and collaboration to help our kids learn these behaviors. 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Wiener's brilliant and scholarly work presents the argument of the traditionalists' neurobiological delay model versus the alternative biopsychosocial model in the development and treatment of ADHD. He explains how the traditionalists' view of the cause of ADHD is strictly biological with the necessity for medicinal treatment(s). Whereas, the biopsychosocial model shows us how ADHD behaviors are socially reinforced. Through effort and relearning, Dr. Wiener shows us how we can reinforce non-ADHD behaviors by modeling compassion, listening skills, and mutual respect. We can encourage the development of self-reliance and collaboration through the Socratic method of learning. Dr. Wiener shows us the tremendous influence of biopsychosocial understanding on causes of and remedies for ADHD behaviors. Dr. Wiener shows us that by starting early with our children in teaching self-reliance, self-efficacy, collaboration and negotiating skills in positive, noncritical ways, our children will grow into satisfied, involved, high-achieving and independent adults. I believe his book teaches us all how to be civilized, one family at a time.

Referring to: "Sometimes I Get All Scribbly", by Maureen Bissen Neuville.

My Mother-in-law bought this book for us last year and it really helped us to understand ADHD (as I think we were in denial). Our son has since been diagnosed with ADD. Since reading it we have been better able to cope. It was easy to read and not cluttered with a lot of medical and professional terms that we did not understand. It does, however, refer to researched information that helps us to understand the disorder. We now feel like we are not the only ones coping with a child with ADHD.

I continue to refer to this book and have let others borrow it. They have found it a big help also. Now that I found this site I will tell others where they can order their own copy.

Thanks Mary C

This book was awful. I lost this book halfway through and it didn't matter to me. Normally if I lost a book I would go through the house so I could finish it.
I'm a big Sox fan and Joe Castiglione is a great broadcaster, but he's not a great author. One star for trying.

Editorial Review:

Veteran broadcaster Joe Castiglione has seen his share of heartbreaking games, especially from his vantage point at Fenway Park where he has called the Red Sox games for the last 20 years. In his newest book, Castiglione not only recounts the drama from the booth in Boston, but also his travels and baseball adventures throughout the country in his previous stints with the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers over his 30-year career. Special chapters are devoted to favorite players, spring training, major league cities and the business of sports broadcasting.

I could have cried as I read the book---there in print was a perfect description of my child and the problems he's having in school. Every educator should be REQUIRED to read this text.

Editorial Review:

Written for a teenager who is tired of hearing, 'You're just lazy!' and 'I know you can do better!' this comprehensive guide features everything teens want to know about ADHD. Chapters address such concerns as getting through high school and college, depression, learning disabilities, and life after school is completed. The question and answer format of the book makes it easy to read. This revised edition also covers the concept of executive functioning, highlights new treatments, addresses changes in school accommodations for students with ADHD, and includes an updated resources section.

Editorial Review:

The Annie Books are a must read for any parent, teacher, or student with the challenges of Asperger's Syndrome or Attention Deficit Disorders. Taming Tommy's Tantrums is a valuable tool for parents, social workers, counselors, psychologists, educators, and physicians working with children experiencing the challenges of ASD, ADD, and tantrums or acting out behaviors. Annie Books are fun to read, provide useful information, allow for empathetic understanding, for those of you, who don't get to understand it from the inside, and those of us, who don't know, that those of you, don't understand it from the inside! We think that everyone feels this way, so we wonder what is wrong with us, and why can't we just be normal...

This book is very helpful and positive direction 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm in agreement with Dr. Papa, drugging our kids to control their behavior is missing the bigger picture. Changing the diet of my kids made a huge difference in their behavior. The books makes this very easy. I would recommend this book to anyone who is faced with behavioral problems with their kids.

It stops and makes you think 4 out of 5 stars.

Really good book. It stops and makes you think about everything that we give out children. The information on the drugs was very helpful. We have chosen to go the naturopathic route with our PDD child and Dr. Papa's book was very informative so I feel we made an educated decision for our child. As a child who was on Ritalin herself and had it work out well, I don't say this lightly. Every child is different and every parent will choose a different treatment route for their child, but reading as much as possible and being as educated as possible before making that decision gives some peace of mind. Dr. Papa's book is a good one to read to that end and I would definitely recommend it. It is written in easily understandable language. It is a quick read too. Short, sweet and to the point.
