Editorial Review:

Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they’re not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden’s groundbreaking study reveals that ADD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations. Included is a brand new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps — restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image — help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms.

Color photographs that capture the short attention span of the reader are featured throughout, as well as sidebars and testimonials from adults with ADD, providing numerous organizational tips, such as, the importance of dividing time into minutes or moments, task completion, how to avoid procrastination, asking for help, and how not to be a packrat.

Learning with YOUR purpose in mind -- not your parents', not your teacher's, not your school's

Every day, your school, your teachers, and even your peers draw lines to
measure and standardize intelligence. They decide what criteria make one person smart and another person stupid. They decide who will succeed and who will just get by. Perhaps you find yourself outside the norm, because you learn differently -- but, unlike your classmates, you have no system in place that consistently supports your ability and desire to learn. Simply put, you are considered lazy and stupid. You are expected to fail.

Learning Outside the Lines is written by two such "academic failures" -- that is, two academic failures who graduated from Brown University at the top of their class. Jonathan Mooney and David Cole teach you how to take control of your education and find true success -- and they offer all the reasons why you should persevere. Witty, bold, and disarmingly honest, Learning Outside the Lines takes you on a journey toward personal empowerment and profound educational change, proving once again that rules sometimes need to be broken.

Editorial Review:

Blake Taylor's memoir, written when he was 17, offers, for the first time, a young person's account of what it's like to live and grow up with this common condition. Join Blake as he foils bullies, confronts unfair teachers, struggles with distraction and disorganization on exams, and goes sailing out-of-bounds and ends up with a boatload of spiders. It will be an inspiration and companion to the millions of others like him who must find a way to thrive with a different perspective than many of us.

The book features an introduction by psychologist Lara Honos-Webb, author of The Gift of ADHD, and a leading advocate for kids with ADHD.

Blake's mother first suspected he had ADHD when he, at only three years of age, tried to push his infant sister in her carrier off the kitchen table. As time went by, Blake developed a reputation for being hyperactive and impulsive. He launched rockets (accidentally) into neighbor's swimming pools and set off alarms in museums. Blake was diagnosed formally with ADHD when he was five years old. In this book, he tells about the next twelve years as he learns to live with both the good and bad sides of life with ADHD.

Some good ideas...... 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

What I took away from this is the power of visualization and developing visual memory as an another tool. I didn't however finish the four week program. Part of this, sure, is ADD, but part of it was the excruciatingly slow pace at which it progressed. When I have a desk full of bills to pay, I don't like directions to "spend no more than 10 minutes on your desk today." It just doesn't fly. To be fair, this would probably be a great book for someone who had no organizational systems in place, was completely overwhelmed, and had no idea where or how to start. I know there's many out there like that. I do have a system of sorts, so this wasn't a good fit for me. If you have ADD and have no clue where to start, by all means try it!

Editorial Review:

Based on the concept of visual thinking and filled with tips on how to keep the body at its highest functioning level, this program helps AD/HD sufferers become successful in their everyday lives. The authors share simple yet powerful techniques to develop and harness the strengths of the visual right brain, while at the same time demonstrating how treatment for AD/HD can maximize success.

Hartmann and Drugs 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Hartmann is a successful multitasker: not only does he write popular books on ADD/ADHD, he has published numerous books of poetry, has opened four hospitals in Third World countries, and so on. His point is that ADD/ADHD is a curse if it is not channeled properly, but can be a great blessing, and an enormous goad (and even key) to success if the "sufferer" learns to handle it, learns to cope with it.

As someone who was bored in school not just because it was repetitive, not just because teachers spent way too much time on task for the attention spans of children, but because it was all too EASY, I recognized myself in Hartmann's case studies immediately. But I was never diagnosed with ADD or ADHD because I learned to cope early. I taught myself to stay on task long enough to finish projects. And as Hartmann stresses, that's the key: finishing projects. When you're ADD, or a "hunter," it requires an extra effort of focus to do it, at first--not just a burst of focus, but a willingness to keep your nose to the grindstone for long periods of time (HOURS! DAYS!) no matter how much it hurts--but soon enough the effort is internalized and success on the world's terms becomes much easier.

Not that the "farmers" will necessarily understand that success. My colleagues say I publish "too much." I'll be working on a scholarly book and a play and a translation at once, and they'll all get done, pretty quickly, within months, because I know I have to push hard to finish or I'll lose interest. As a result I've published something like 15 books, and have a hard drive full of unpublished and unproduced manuscripts as well. I can't understand people who spend fifteen years writing a single magnum opus. Don't they get BORED?

I do want to take issue with one unnamed reviewer, though:

"While I can agree with the point in this book that ADHD to some extent is situational (a hunter temperament within a farmer society) I have to raise obvious concerns about the outcome of any book not giving full credit to the metabolic issue and medications. ... It is an extremely painful experience for many parents of ADHD students to NOT provide medication or alternatives to medication while students continue to be hyperactive, unfocused, extremely distractible, while exercising little impulse control."

This sort of review is irresponsible. The reviewer clearly did not pay attention while reading Hartmann's book (easily distracted? ADD?). Hartmann stresses specifically that ADD/ADHD is painful, stressful, traumatic for many children, and that Ritalin or some other chemical intervention may in many cases be not only necessary but life-saving. But he also stresses that long-term Ritalin use is not the solution--that what children need is instruction in coping with ADD, in channeling their impulses in productive ways. In effect, what he is calling for is help for children with ADD/ADHD who need to learn to produce Ritalin analogs in their own brain chemistry, without external intervention.

Editorial Review:

As many as 20 million Americans may have Attention Deficit Disorder. In the five years since Thom Hartmann first published his pioneering book, "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception," new findings support his theory linking ADD to the genetic makeup of men and women who hunted for their food in prehistoric times. Now, Hartmann has revised his groundbreaking book to include the latest research along with surprising information on studies that link second-hand smoke to disruptive behavior. This edition has a new introduction by famed Harvard psychiatrist Edward M. Hallowell, MD, co-author of the best-selling "Driven to Distraction.:

Things about this book to be aware of. 3 out of 5 stars.
27 of 29 people found this review helpful.

This book was informative about learning the basics of how ADD can affect relationships, from the perspective of both ADD and non-ADD partners. It was the first book I read on the subject, so I learned a fair amount.

That said, there are some things I wish I had known about this book before I bought it. These may not be issues for many, but there are plenty of us out there who would like to know these things:

1. This book is completely heteronormative. All relationships discussed are M/F.

2. The book assumes the relationship in question is marriage or imminently headed in that direction

3. The book assumes traditional monogamy as the only non-harmful form of relationship.

4. As the book progresses there is more and more Christianity slipped in. First there are more and more references to God and praying for help. Then there is a recommendation of the Promise Keepers, and reading the Bible together.

5. The book very strongly recommends medication for ADD partners, with no real discussion of options or strategies for people who may not be comfortable with being medicated. The implication is that if you care about your relationship, you will medicate.

6. It is hard to understand how the three children of the book's "model couple" as a success story of an ADD relationship get taken care of, given all the things this couple do to keep their relationship strong. I read it thinking they must have a live-in nanny, which just isn't realistic for the vast majority of people.

If any of these things are going to turn you off or irritate you, you may want to check out a different book on this topic.

Editorial Review:

For any couple with an ADD partner, this book will help create a more passionate and dynamic relationship.

The "Holy Grail" has arrived! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Within the vast, bleak universe of adult ADHD, most glints of hope, have either blinked pathetically, using what remains of rapidly stagnating, kinetic, energy or have imploded in the air-less vacuum of a world that few understand and even fewer care about. This new book by authors Barkley, Murphy, and Fischer has, for the first time, given me the confidence to believe that, for adults with ADHD, a new day has dawned, a new light is shining, and the thick fog of shame may, over time, be blown away.

The door has finally slammed shut for the skeptics, the uninformed, the misinformed, the mal-intended, and the ignorant health care professionals and "experts" who, unless they buy a copy of this book and study its contents, will find that their days treating adults with ADHD are numbered.

I am not an MD, psychiatrist, psychologist, or PhD clinician; I am a 50 year old well-educated, upper-middle class, senior executive-level, male who, in my early 40's, was diagnosed with ADHD. In the struggle to help identify the potential sources of my rapidly deteriorating life, I had finally found one that had a name, but was it too late for it to matter?

To stay afloat in my cesspool of confusion and uncertainty, in addition to therapy and medication, I relied heavily on finding and studying every source of information that I could dig up regarding adult ADHD. At the time, with the exception of a few, well written and relevant books that were on the market, there wasn't much from which to choose. Despite these resources being helpful, something was still missing in the conversation, but I didn't have the capacity to understand the nature of what that might be. Over the next year, it became obvious to me; I was able to understand the extent to which ADHD had negatively affected my life and discovered, first-hand, "the ugly truth" as to why; that adult ADHD is one of our most debilitating and devastating disorders. It was while looking and listening for informed, motivated, and credible advocates who truly understood and promoted this philosophy that I also discovered a silence that continued to be deafening, until now.

I lost my marriage and left behind a turbulent twenty year career and sustainable income, and have spent the last two years in a desperate search for my lost life. Today, as a worn out Guinea Pig in my own ADHD experiment, the results of which I hope to utilize in my attempts to create positive change for me, and perhaps for other adults with ADHD, I take great comfort in reading and studying "ADHD in Adults: What the Science Says." I appreciate this amazing resource, and feel the utmost respect for the three authors who have devoted their lives and considerable talents and skills to not only wade through and organize the dark morass of books, clinical studies, scientific papers, surveys, interviews, and journals that already existed, but to add to this mix their own ground-breaking and desperately needed perspective and conclusions regarding the incredibly important and massively misunderstood subject of adult ADHD. ~ Thank you. Jon Teger

Editorial Review:

Providing a new perspective on ADHD in adults, this compelling book analyzes findings from two major studies directed by leading authority Russell A. Barkley. Groundbreaking information is presented on the significant impairments produced by the disorder across major functional domains and life activities, including educational outcomes, work, relationships, health behaviors, and mental health. Thoughtfully considering the treatment implications of these findings, the book also demonstrates that existing diagnostic criteria do not accurately reflect the way ADHD is experienced by adults, and points the way toward developing better criteria that center on executive function deficits. Accessible tables, figures, and sidebars encapsulate the study results and offer detailed descriptions of the methods used.
