Must Read 5 out of 5 stars.

This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy. Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

Good AD/HD Resource 4 out of 5 stars.

When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject. I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD. Eventually I'll finish the book. Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".

I ultimately purchased the book so that I could have the liberty of making notes in the margins and taking the self-assessment test in the front of the book. This book is a good place to start if you're new to the world of AD/HD and how to cope.

Editorial Review:

Understanding Women with AD/HD is designed to be a practical and readable guide for women at any age, with special chapters focusing on different stages of life.

Editorial Review:

Sari Solden specializes in working with ADD adults and their partners. Her first book, Women with Attention Deficit Disorder, has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide. Now, in Journeys Through ADDulthood, she takes a groundbreaking look at the emotional turmoil often precipitated by ADD and offers readers roadmaps to richer, happier lives.

Although most commonly associated with children, attention deficit disorder (ADD or AD/HD) affects the lives of between 8 and 10 million American adults. Even years after diagnosis, many adults still feel discouraged because treatments tend to focus exclusively on managing or overcoming the symptoms of ADD rather than on teaching patients to lead a fulfilling life despite these differences. Sari Solden, who struggles with ADD and these issues herself, has spent the past twelve years focusing her work on the emotional challenges men and women face with ADD in their lives. Journeys Through ADDulthood is her profoundly empathetic and inspiring guide to living a rich and full life even as the effects of ADD remain.

Living with ADD affects the development of one’s view of self, especially for those not diagnosed until adulthood, after an entire childhood of feeling “different” without knowing why. There are no quick fixes—Solden takes a longer view of the challenges and sees living with ADD as an ongoing internal process. Journeys Through ADDulthood is a step-by-step guide through three stages, or journeys: toward understanding your brain and your primary symptoms; toward discovering your true identity and embracing your uniqueness; and toward learning to share your true self to connect with others. Illuminating her points based on the real-life journeys of two men and two women, Solden offers self-help exercises at the end of each chapter to point the way around common roadblocks on the road to empowerment, self-fulfillment, and the realization of long-buried dreams and goals.

Good resource 4 out of 5 stars.

(...)I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already.

A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The "H" stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ("L" stands for a problem with "Learning" instead of a problem with "Hyperactivity".) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D.

This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying "Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!" I may be a "reviewer" but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future!

This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass!

The chapters include:

If You Want Something Different, You've Got to Do Something Different.
Going Through The Open Door
"But Why Do I Have ADD?"
The First Step Toward Changing Your Diet
What Should You Eat?
Tasty Recipes
The Importance of Detoxifying
Supplements That We Need
Nutrients That Help A.D.D. & A.D.H.D.
Non-Dietary Approaches to A.D.D. / A.D.H.D.
Resource Directory, Bibliography, Index. (...)

Editorial Review:

This book gives the latest information on what to eat, what to avoid, problems with chemicals, supplements that help, non-dietary approaches, reasons for ADD and more! It takes you through some easy steps to eliminate the triggers for ADD/ADHD that you may consider before you give your child drugs to see if the symptoms go away. It is a simple read that touches on many subjects and gives the reader an eye opener into potential causes of ADD/ADHD.

Editorial Review:

This book offers clinicians a comprehensive, research-derived treatment model for use with adult clients suffering from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The treatment model integrates education, medication, coaching, and cognitive behavioral therapy to go beyond what traditional therapeutic techniques can offer. Written for the busy professional in private practice, it provides everything a therapist or ADHD coach needs to know to help these clients quickly and effectively.

... it is a real pleasure to read Tuckman's superbly rendered book on ADHD in adults, for it is so well-reasoned, science-based, information-rich, to the point, and finally--useful! Apart from wishing I had written it, I sincerely wish that you will read it.
--Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at Medical University of South Carolina Charleston and research professor of psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse

Tuckman has filled a huge gap in our understanding of adults who suffer from ADHD...This book is a valuable contribution to the literature and will be a treasured resource.
--Harvey C. Parker, Ph.D., cofounder of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) and author of The ADHD Workbook for Parents

Even if your partner with ADHD isn't an avid reader, he/she might read this book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Do you think your partner might have ADHD, but he or she either resists the idea or you don't know how to broach the subject? Buy this book by Dr. Michele Novotni.

Rather than telling someone, "I think you have ADHD," it's usually better to first empathize with and validate the person's experience. This book does that and more, opening the door to the reader wanting to learn more about ADHD. The title immediately appeals to anyone with ADHD who has never understood why their best intentions to make friends and fit in social groups haven't always worked out.

In my seven years of leading support groups for the partners of adults with ADHD, I've heard repeatedly that this book is one of those most likely to catch their ADHD partners' attention--and keep it. Even men with ADHD who seldom sit down to read become absorbed by this book -- because it so closely describes their experience. Finally, they feel understood and, typically, they feel great relief that they're not the only ones who somehow didn't learn "what everyone else knows". This alone goes a long way towards dissolving ego defenses around the idea of having ADHD.

Dr. Novotni knows this subject intimately, having been a national lecturer on ADHD for years and a pioneer in creating awareness about adult ADHD. Her tone throughout this book is both matter-of-fact and compassionate, never condescending. To get a sense of her approach, you can read articles at her website: http://michelenovotni.com/

A person with ADHD could spend a year in therapy talking about their feelings of social awkwardness and never gain the lessons found in this book. Highly, highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

This important new book documents a major breakthrough in the treatment of the three most widespread learning disabilities--ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia ("clumsy child syndrome"). Although these conditions have reached epidemic proportions, treatment has been limited to ineffective behavioral therapies or the controversial prescription drug Ritalin. Now Dr. B. Jacqueline Stordy, a leading researcher in the field, reveals a stunning new treatment based on a simple nutritional supplement: LCP (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids). The LCP Solution is the first book to describe this new natural treatment and to explain how children (and adults) can incorporate it into their daily lives.

As a member of a family with a long history of dyslexia, Dr. Stordy discovered in a pioneering experiment that dyslexic and dyspraxic children who began taking a dietary supplement consisting of LCP experienced dramatic transformations in the quality of their lives. At the same time, parallel studies conducted at Purdue University came up with similar results with children who had ADHD. The effect of this dietary supplement was nothing short of revolutionary: after only a few weeks, dyslexic and ADHD children became calmer, more focused, easier to teach, while dyspraxics improved significantly in dexterity and balance, showing markedly less anxiety.

In The LCP Solution, Dr. Stordy documents how this life-changing treatment came about and explains step-by-step how sufferers of each of the three major conditions can use it to change their lives at home, at school, and at work. Illuminating, vividly presented, and authoritative in its findings, this book will revolutionize our approach to learning disabilities. LCPs are natural, simple to use, and amazing in their benefits. If you or someone you love suffers from a learning disability, this book is essential reading.

Editorial Review:

No business autobiography has ever let it all hang out like this one. In building an unconventionally democratic multinational company that has been named by Fortune, Forbes, and Working Mother magazines as one of the best places to work in America, Paul Orfalea never tamed his impulsive, rebellious nature, and he discusses his flaws and failures with as much enthusiasm as his successes. COPY THIS! is destined to become a classic tale of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Reading.

A charismatic, heart-warming business memoir that's filled with life lessons on overcoming obstacles, COPY THIS! is an audiobook for every business owner looking to grow a company, every manager helping his team perform, every visionary trying to launch a new idea --and for every mother and father of a child suffering from dyslexia or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Because COPY THIS! is the story of how Paul Orfalea opened a small copy shop called Kinko's in 1970 and turned it into a $2 billion-a-year company, while barely being able to read, write or sit still through a business meeting.

Here is the story of a dyslexic, hyperactive boy who flunked out of third grade--twice--yet succeeded in using his learning disabilities as opportunities, molding the compassionate, unconventional, partner-driven culture that allowed Kinko's to thrive, and made it, according Fortune, Forbes and Mother Jones, one of the best places in America to work. In fourteen chapters narrated with the engaging voice of a born storyteller, Orfalea takes as much pleasure in discussing his shortcomings as he does his successes, and imparts the valuable lessons he's learned along the way: Manage the environment, not the people. Fail forward. Be "on" your business, not "in" your business. Let your soul catch up with your body. Keep a poker face--and a poker mind. And know when --and how --to walk away. Which Orfalea did in 2000, having made millionaires out of dozens of his friends and partners, after an extraordinary 30-year run.

Beyond Just Meds thinking, Take Charge of your Life!!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
67 of 67 people found this review helpful.

In this book authors Judith Greenbaum Ph.D. and Geraldine Markle Ph.D. string together a phenomenal amount of information in a concise and straight to the point fashion. This is definitely what I would call a life skills book focused on strategies for overcoming many of the daily problems associated with adult ADHD. The authors have wisely decided to stay away from spending too much time on biological root causes, instead focusing on practical tips and strategies for maximizing success in daily life. The book seems to blend elements of cognitive therapy with a well defined process task analysis system.

This book is both honest and positive in its approach to managing ADHD, and is structured in an easy to access fashion allowing readers to easily jump around and focus on what their own particular interests are.

Part one of the book focuses on helping readers better understand what ADHD is. It then moves on to helping them identify what their strengths and weaknesses are, and ends by providing readers with a series of six tools they can use in order to better manage their ADHD.

Part two of the book provides practical tips and strategies for problems often faced on a daily basis by those who live with ADHD. This part of the book covers topics that will help readers learn how to stop losing keys, wallets and even provides a strategy to help one from losing their car in a parking lot.

The second part of the book also provides strategies for helping with household organization, time management, and how to actually break down complex tasks using a well developed and thought out to do list system. This section of the book closes by providing some interesting and helpful tips around improving ones social skills.

Unfortunately, part three of the book spends what I consider to be too much time on medication, and I think could have been avoided completely as there are already tons of books dealing with the issue of medication and its management. Having said that the last part of this section entitled Making Decisions and Setting Goals is definitely a gold mine of information, again using a well-designed checklist system approach that will help readers better set, plan out goals and move into the future successfully.

Overall, this book is excellent, and one that I highly recommend as an essential addition to any adult ADHD resource library be it a personal or professional one. This book is filled for the most part with the type of information you are not going to get from your psychiatrist or doctor. It's what I would call a nuts and bolts book, which can help an adult with ADHD build a better life for him/herself one day at a time, it's the type of book readers can keep going back to whenever new problems arise or old ones crop back up.

Editorial Review:

“Filled with tools, strategies, and checklists and written with a fine understanding of the problems adults with ADD face daily. This book is a gift to all who read it.” —Edward Hollowell, M.D., bestselling author of Driven to Distraction

Written by two expert ADD coaches with more than 30 years experience, this practical handbook offers adults with ADD practical techniques for coping with common everyday challenges. These simple proven strategies can help you focus attention, organize your thoughts, and manage time—so you can avoid missing appointments and deadlines, handle social situations, and improve memory skills. A safe alternative to prescription medications, it’s a complete home program that anyone can do.
