Editorial Review:

For would–be entrepreneurs, innovation managers or just anyone fascinated by the special chemistry and drive that created some of the best technology companies in the world, this book offers both wisdom and engaging insights—straight from the source.

— Chris Anderson, editor–in–chief of Wired Magazine, and author of The Long Tail

“All the best things that I did at Apple came from (a) not having money and (b) not having done it before, ever.” —Steve Wozniak, Apple

Now available in paperback—with a new preface and interview with Jessica Livingston about Y Combinator!

Founders at Work: Stories of Startups’ Early Days is a collection of interviews with founders of famous technology companies about what happened in the very earliest days. These people are celebrities now. What was it like when they were just a couple friends with an idea? Founders like Steve Wozniak (Apple), Caterina Fake (Flickr), Mitch Kapor (Lotus), Max Levchin (PayPal), and Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail) tell you in their own words about their surprising and often very funny discoveries as they learned how to build a company.

Where did they get the ideas that made them rich? How did they convince investors to back them? What went wrong, and how did they recover?

Nearly all technical people have thought of one day starting or working for a startup. For them, this book is the closest you can come to being a fly on the wall at a successful startup, to learn how it's done.

But ultimately these interviews are required reading for anyone who wants to understand business, because startups are business reduced to its essence. The reason their founders become rich is that startups do what businessesdo—create value—more intensively than almost any other part of the economy. How? What are the secrets that make successful startups so insanely productive? Read this book, and let the founders themselves tell you.

A spoonful of humor helps the material go down 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We love the "Dummies" series for their humor and easy-to-understand qualities. What good is a prep book if your mind wanders due to boredom? My son felt this book helped him understand the subjects better than his high school classes did. After thoroughly reviewing each subject, the book had two practice tests with complete explanations in the next chapter. This really helped my son prepare for and do well on the ACT. We highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

What would you think of a test preparation guide that's actually fun to read? If you think that studying for the ACT means memorizing long lists of mathematical theorems and seven-syllable words, think again! Written in the famously friendly ."..For Dummies" style, "The ACT For Dummies," 2nd Edition, takes the drudgery out of studying -- and zeros in on exactly what you need to know to score high on the test. "The ACT For Dummies," 2nd Edition, gives you plain-English explanations, a tear-out cheat sheet, two complete sample exams and practice questions, and top ten lists (such as ten wrong rumors about the ACT, ten things that colleges want, and ten dumb things you can do to mess up your ACT). Discover how to Get your best possible score Master critical reading passages Review only the math you really need Tackle science reasoning questions Spot trick questions Ease your test-taking anxiety You can have your ACT together in no time with "The ACT For Dummies," 2nd Edition!

Resistance is "Fertile" 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Bradygames guide for Resistance 2 is basically two guides in one. It contains everything you need for the single player campaign as well as the co-op campaign. Design and layout are top notch. Photos are large and clear. The level descriptions are easy to follow (although the type is pretty small). There are lots of hints given on how to defeat certain enemies. There is a large fold out in the back of the guide that lists all of the trophies as well as cool concept art. All of the multiplayer options are explained with painstaking detail. There is a lot of instruction on how to coordinate your efforts as a team as well as individually in co-op and competitive modes.

Bradygames usually puts out high quality guides, and this one is no exception. This is a rich guide that will surely enhance your game playing experience. You'll notice I used the word "fertile" in my title. Well, this guide will help you get the most out of the game, which focuses more attention on "growing" the multiplayer component and expanding the Resistance universe with two campaigns. I couldn't ask for more.

Editorial Review:

BradyGames’ Resistance 2 Signature Series Guide includes the following:

  • A comprehensive walkthrough of the entire battle to defeat the Chimera invasion.
  • WEAPONS COVERAGE: Detailed data on the entire arsenal of weapons
  • BOSS TACTICS: Expert strategies to defeat every boss
  • MULTIPLAYER STRATEGIES: Extensive multiplayer coverage, including tips to dominate the unprecedented squad-based battles
  • Signature Series guide features bonus foldout and more!

Good guide, but not complete 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Okay, this quide does a very good job of summarizing the story and detailing the gameplay, which is great. However, the bottom line is that it does not cover the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, just the Wii and the Playstation 2 versions. The PS3/360 versions have an extra level, Empire City, that the Wii/PS2 versions don't. Also, I believe that extra characters are involved in the storyline and have special mini-games that do not seem to be present in the Wii/PS2 versions.

Despite this annoying, and surprising considering the quality of Primagames' guides, error the guide gets everything about these two versions downpat. If you have a Wii/PS2 and plan to get Sonic Unleashed, it will be very helpful. If you are going to go for the PS3/360 versions, like I am, skip it and wait for either 1) Primagames to come out with a guide to these versions or 2) Someone to put an FAQ on GameFAQs or [...].

Editorial Review:

• Spring Into Action: This game combines a brand new graphics engine with the power and fun of the Wii's controls. Prima's guide will cover all the basic and advanced strategies for success in SEGA's latest installment to the Sonic franchise.
• Don't Be Undone: Special moves, secret abilities, and strategies for boss battles will be detailed to the fullest.
• Know Where to Look: Secrets and unlockables will be uncovered with all the where's and how's you need to get it for yourself.

Editorial Review:

What others in the trenches say about The Pragmatic Programmer..."The cool thing about this book is that it's great for keeping the programming process fresh. The book helps you to continue to grow and clearly comes from people who have been there." --Kent Beck, author of Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change "I found this book to be a great mix of solid advice and wonderful analogies!" --Martin Fowler, author of Refactoring and UML Distilled "I would buy a copy, read it twice, then tell all my colleagues to run out and grab a copy. This is a book I would never loan because I would worry about it being lost." --Kevin Ruland, Management Science, MSG-Logistics "The wisdom and practical experience of the authors is obvious. The topics presented are relevant and useful...By far its greatest strength for me has been the outstanding analogies--tracer bullets, broken windows, and the fabulous helicopter-based explanation of the need for orthogonality, especially in a crisis situation. I have little doubt that this book will eventually become an excellent source of useful information for journeymen programmers and expert mentors alike."--John Lakos, author of Large-Scale C++ Software Design "This is the sort of book I will buy a dozen copies of when it comes out so I can give it to my clients. " --Eric Vought, Software Engineer "Most modern books on software development fail to cover the basics of what makes a great software developer, instead spending their time on syntax or technology where in reality the greatest leverage possible for any software team is in having talented developers who really know their craft well. An excellent book." --Pete McBreen, Independent Consultant "Since reading this book, I have implemented many of the practical suggestions and tips it contains. Across the board, they have saved my company time and money while helping me get my job done quicker! This should be a desktop reference for everyone who works with code for a living." --Jared Richardson, Senior Software Developer, iRenaissance, Inc. "I would like to see this issued to every new employee at my company..." --Chris Cleeland, Senior Software Engineer, Object Computing, Inc. "If I'm putting together a project, it's the authors of this book that I want...And failing that I'd settle for people who've read their book."--Ward Cunningham Straight from the programming trenches, The Pragmatic Programmer cuts through the increasing specialization and technicalities of modern software development to examine the core process--taking a requirement and producing working, maintainable code that delights its users. It covers topics ranging from personal responsibility and career development to architectural techniques for keeping your code flexible and easy to adapt and reuse. Read this book, and you'll learn how to *Fight software rot; *Avoid the trap of duplicating knowledge; *Write flexible, dynamic, and adaptable code; *Avoid programming by coincidence; *Bullet-proof your code with contracts, assertions, and exceptions; *Capture real requirements; *Test ruthlessly and effectively; *Delight your users; *Build teams of pragmatic programmers; and *Make your developments more precise with automation. Written as a series of self-contained sections and filled with entertaining anecdotes, thoughtful examples, and interesting analogies, The Pragmatic Programmer illustrates the best practices and major pitfalls of many different aspects of software development.Whether you're a new coder, an experienced programmer, or a manager responsible for software projects, use these lessons daily, and you'll quickly see improvements in personal productivity, accuracy, and job satisfaction. You'll learn skills and develop habits and attitudes that form the foundation for long-term success in your career. You'll become a Pragmatic Programmer.
