Combines acupressure and massage to treat pain using elastic tape

• Shows how the use of an elastic, adhesive tape works with the body’s own motions to combine the actions of acupressure and massage

• Presents both therapeutic and preventative techniques for acute and chronic pain

• Contains step-by-step instructions illustrated in full color detailing how to self-treat pain in all parts of the body

Sufferers of chronic pain well know the frustration of treatments involving endless rounds of drugs or expensive physical therapy--that may or may not offer relief. In Acupressure Taping, authors Hecker and Liebchen present a comprehensive guide to a new method of pain treatment--acutaping--which offers a much simpler and more effective alternative. In acutaping, elastic tape is placed over the afflicted area in accordance with related acupuncture points. During the course of normal movement throughout the day, the elastic tape provides a gentle but consistent massage to the inflamed area. Because the skin adheres to the tape, it is shifted against the subtissue during motion, causing lymph tissue to drain and connective tissue to be massaged.

The authors show that most bodily dysfunctions can be self-treated through this innovative method. Combining elements of Chinese medicine with osteopathy, acutaping produces a method of treatment for ailments ranging from back pain and tennis elbow to menstrual pain and migraines. Acutaping is an easy and effective treatment--without side effects--that offers welcome relief to sufferers of chronic pain.

3 Minute Miracle 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I overheard a passenger on a bus (recovering from a knee injury) rave about this book. I was curious. Investing 3 minutes seems a bit too easy.

I ordered the book and read through it in one evening. The first portion deals with the causes of pain, how we accept and treat pain and the general misconceptions of contempary pain management. Halfway through the book you'll come to the "exercises." Six basic positions. Sweep your skepticism aside and try the series of yoga like positions in the order prescribed. These are relaxed, non-bouncy, dynamic moves and slowly stretches muscles and joints in a very positive way. It's a well organized book and stresses that the prevention program can be done at anytime of day. In the time it takes to brew a cup of coffee or during the long commercial breaks on network TV - you'll experience, litterally, an overnight improvement.

This book will be part of my Christmas gift list to friends and relatives.

Values and Action-based Pain Management 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book uses ACT as a basis for helping a person experiencing persistent pain to live a life full of what is really important rather than with futile attempts to control the uncontrollable.
It's quite easy to follow and has both short and simple readings alongside exercises that can be used to reflect upon the concepts that are introduced.
I think a person experiencing pain would need to be at a certain stage of motivation to be ready to stop seeking pain reduction before beginning on the journey that this approach offers - but if ready, the book certainly covers the ground and is user-friendly enough for most people who read self-help books to follow.
If the person experiencing pain has the support of a therapist either familiar with ACT, or prepared to suspend judgement and follow the process, the process this book uses would work well. I'm not so sure that an individual who was working alone would find it as easy!
As an introductory book for a therapist working in pain management, this book provides great tools to use, and a logical process to follow. It also has some good references if the therapist is keen to read more.
Recommended.

Editorial Review:

A rich and rewarding life is possible for those of us who live with chronic pain. Based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), one of the most promising and fastest growing psychotherapies being practiced today, this book breaks with conventional notions of pain management. These "feel good" approaches—including the use of pain-killing medication—all work to prevent painful sensations. The ACT approach, however, begins with the assumption that pain is a normal part of living that teaches us a lot about the state of our bodies and minds. Attempts to avoid it often cause more harm than good. By accepting and learning to live with pain, you limit the control it exerts over you. Mindfulness exercises, in particular, help you transform pain from a life-defining preoccupation to a simple experience. From this strong position, you can make choices that will lead to the life you've always wanted. Committed action is the way to make it happen.

Editorial Review:

Reversing Chronic Pain offers a dynamic framework for joining body and mind to speed the healing of traumatic pain from the body level up. Each chapter presents a body-centered skill set that can be mastered through a broad menu of practice exercises. The resulting interlinked somatic building blocks help readers shift from physical pain to body awareness, and from unstoppable suffering to heartfelt connection and peace.

Building on the AIDS cocktail approach that reflects the fact that chronic pain is complex and no one tactic is likely to solve the problem, renowned expert Maggie Phillips presents a 10-1 pain plan comprised of easy strategies based on somatic experience. Even if the reader’s pain is perceived as a “10” at the onset of the program, with 10 being intolerable, the somatic building blocks help shift the pain one point at a time until it gradually diminishes to “1” or even “zero.” Showing how the common professional interventions—medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback—may be more harmful than healing, Reversing Chronic Pain stresses self-treatment throughout, involving sufferers in attaining lives not simply endured but actively enjoyed.

A helpful book for both patients and professionals 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 46 people found this review helpful.

"You'll just have to learn to live with it." That's what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to "live with it?" Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn's book begins. Dr. Thorn's book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is not a comprehensive chronic pain workbook, nor was it intended to be. It does not cover such issues as medications for pain, nor does it cover breathing techniques for pain or insomnia control. Rather, it takes one critically important aspect of pain disorders, how patients come to think about their pain, and deals with the therapeutic process more thoroughly than any other book currently available.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain book is a monumental work on the topic of how pain and suffering are influenced, for better or for worse, by a patient's belief system. Beyond this, this book does an extraordinary job of taking current scientific theory and research about the nature of pain, and distilling from that concrete advice for both clinicians and their patients. This book leaves the reader with the awareness that Dr. Thorn is a master at simplifying complex ideas, and explaining them in a way that even a discouraged patient can understand and benefit from.

Unlike some books, which are scientifically sound but which offer little that is clinically usable, Dr. Thorn's book is eminently practical. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain walks the reader through the types of the beliefs that influence pain, how to assess them, therapeutic strategies, and homework assignment for the patients. This book even takes the additional step of identifying aspects of these assignments that patients are likely to have difficulty with, and strategies for helping patients overcome these difficulties.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is organized with sections on theoretical matters, assessment devices with their scoring keys, and therapeutic strategies with actual homework forms. Additionally, there are also sample dialogs illustrating how to present this information, and how the patient might respond.

Dr. Thorn's approach is at the same time sympathetic to the plight of patients with pain, while still offering hope. While never judgmental, she still challenges patients to identify ineffective coping strategies, and to learn better ones. Most health psychologists will have a chronic pain workbook on their shelf. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is the next step beyond such a workbook, and will be an indispensable addition to even a senior pain professional's library.

Although this book is written as a guide for clinicians who treat pain, this book can also be a useful self-help guide for a motivated patient with pain.

Editorial Review:

Grounded in state-of-the-art theory and research, this hands-on volume provides a complete cognitive-behavioral treatment program for clients suffering from chronic pain. Ten clearly organized modules for use with groups or individuals offer well-tested strategies for engaging clients, challenging distorted thoughts and beliefs about pain, and helping to build needed skills for coping and adaptation. Also featured are a detailed theoretical and empirical rationale, along with guidelines for setting up treatment groups and conducting effective assessments. Presented in a large-size format for ease of photocopying and use, the book contains everything needed to implement the program, including numerous case examples and troubleshooting tips and over 40 reproducible session outlines, client handouts, and assessment tools.

Simply Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Pain Free for Life?? How could it be???? That's what I thought when I saw the title, in fact I bought the book and then doubted why I did it. Over a year went by while I finished an MBA, the entire time I promised myself that I would read a book "for no grade" when I finished. I read a couple that family and friends gave me and then came to "Pain Free for Life" and finished it in a few days.

The book has some of the author's personal information in the first sections that I almost skipped. But sticking to my promise I read it all and found that much of what he had gone through had happened to me too. Have you ever had a doctor that said, "Face it, you might just have to live with the pain for the rest of your life"? Well Dr. Brady did and I did too; so he had my attention. Then he mentioned how he had taken medications for pain that did nothing but mask the pain; I did that too!!

An then he said that he was free from the medications with NO PAIN! He had me hooked; I had to finish the book. I read through the conclusion, went back and journaled for two days and was free from pain. If you don't believe it can happen buy the book and give it a shot.

But truly do it, don't go into it waiting for the doctor to be wrong or to try and prove my review wrong; give yourself a chance. What do you have to lose, if the pain doesn't go away your in the same spot as you started.

It worked for me!!!

Editorial Review:

More than 50 million Americans suffer today from chronic pain. Dr. Scott Brady was one of them. Doctors told him that he would live with his back pain for the rest of his life. In 2000, he founded the Brady Institute, where more than 80 percent of his patients have achieved 80100 percent pain relief without surgery or drugs. Dr. Brady reveals the techniques behind his remarkably effective recovery plan, including innovative applications of spiritual and emotional self-analysis, depth journaling, and prescriptions to boost the power of personal belief. His 40-day program produces results in as little as 30 minutes a daythe key to becoming PAIN FREE FOR LIFE.

Editorial Review:

Chronic pain has a multitude of causes, many of which are not well understood or effectively treated by medical therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often report that pain interferes with their ability to engage in occupational, social, or recreational activities. Sufferers' inability to engage in these everyday activities may contribute to increased isolation, negative mood and physical deconditioning, which in turn can contribute to their experience of pain.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective at managing various chronic pain conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and tension/migraine headache. The CBT treatment engages patients in an active coping process aimed at changing maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that can serve to maintain and exacerbate the experience of chronic pain. Overcoming Chronic Pain, Therapist Guide instills all of these empirically validated treatments into one comprehensive, convenient volume that no clinician can do without. By presenting the basic, proven-effective CBT methods used in each treatment, such as stress management, sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy and cognitive restructuring, this guide can be used to treat all chronic pain conditions with success.
