Clear strategy given for chronic pain sufferers. 5 out of 5 stars.
96 of 100 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good read for those of us who have attempted many different methods and seen countless doctors in an effort to alleviate the suffering at the hands of chronic pain.

The main leap of faith one has to make if this book is to be at all effective is that chronic pain is muscular in nature. How we deal with this knowledge is the key to overcoming chronic pain's hold on us. This is not to say that chronic pain cannot be treated by various medical procedures. Only that if pain persists for long periods of time, a new approach may be needed.

In my own case, after five years of headaches, I finally was diagnosed with feraminal stenosis at C3-C4 and had a dissection and fusion performed. In laymen's terms, two of my nerves roots were constricted where they exited the spine in my neck. The operation basically "cleaned up" the area surrounding the nerves roots. By doing this operation from the front of the neck, a disk is sacrificed and a piece of bone implanted for fusion.

After this operation, I still struggled with very much the same pain as before, once the operative recuperation was complete. My neurosurgeon and I were quite sure that the operation had repaired the damage that had been causing my pain. My neurosurgeon was quick to note this did not necessarily mean that the pain would go away. I was told the pain may be eliminated totally, partially or not at all. Not what one wants to hear but, honest nonetheless.

I give my own history so that others with chronic pain might at least listen to my review of the book and its methods.

Whether one has had treatment of one sort or another to alleviate chronic pain or not, this book is worth a read. I would also recommend that you inform your doctor of this book.

This book attempts, I believe successfully, to have you take control of your pain and life rather than the other way around. The use of medications is not dismissed altogether although it makes a strong case on eventually eliminating painkilling medication along with tranquilizers.

I have found that while using the steps described in the book do require dedication and some effort, it is much less than the energy used by letting chronic pain rule your life.

The book concentrates on three facets of your life. The first is to slowly get the muscles throughout your body moving to the point where some pain reduction occurs which in turn can ease the transition to a life without painkillers and tranquilizers.

The second component of the book's program is where your mind is used as a tool to help reduce chronic pain. This comes in the form of relaxation exercises and using your mind to focus on ways to prevent chronic pain attacts from dominating your life.

The third component of the program is in the area of diet. In a nutshell, it asks that you eat sensibly and eliminate, at least for the short term, caffeine and alcohol from your diet.

I have taken the steps described in this book over the past six months. I can honestly say that while I still suffer from some pain, the pain no longer rules my life. The steps I take daily to combat the pain have allowed me to go back to work, although in a very different field.

In ending, I quote from page 197: "Many people go around half alive, caught in an emotional rut that they never try to analyze. But chronic pain in a strange way, has forced introspection upon you. Pain, which laid you low, can actually be an opportunity to turn your life around, if you have the courage to look at what is bothering you."

If you can find that courage, this book will guide you on a journey that could change your life.

Editorial Review:

If you are one of the 50 million Americans who suffer from pain and have searched to no avail for a smart, safe, and, most of all, effective solution, you may find relief in Dr. Norman Marcus's Freedom from Pain. Adapted from Dr. Marcus's remarkable narcotics-free New York Pain Treatment Program at Lenox Hill Hospital, this book will teach you, in carefully graduated steps, how to surrender the attitudes that are holding you prisoner to pain and how to master the physical and mental techniques that can set you free -- techniques that have had an unprecedented success rate and will work with just about any type of chronic pain, including lower-back ailments, headaches, and arthritis.

Dr. Marcus is both supportive and sympathetic, giving even the most severe cases reason for optimism, and his book is the next best thing to a visit to the Pain Treatment Program itself.

I love this CD!!!
Its amazing to have at my fingertips a tool that I can use to prompt me to take "time out" from the day (and activities), in confidence that I will return to it with more awareness of and connection with my mind and body after doing the practice.
I sometimes use it as a "stop-gap" between doing one thing then the next, and can choose whether to do it for 20 or 40 minutes. Sometimes, I just feel tired and lie down thinking its for 20 minutes but once I'm there, realise that its one of the kindest things I could do for myself - and keep lying on after its finished playing! I don't remember giving myself the permission to do that prior to using the CD (probably cos it was very rare for me to go just lie on my bed!).
Now it's a real treat - one to which I can give myself fully, and after doing so, I'm more wholly present to the rest of my experience(/my life?!).
I don't have loads of money, but I can safely say that this has been my best value-for-money CD ever, based on the amount of times I've played it, the quality of my "listening experience", and its endurance factor - cos I'll still be using it years from now.
Hope this helps anyone unsure about trying this CD.

But don't just take my word for it - decide for yourself!!

Editorial Review:

The Body Scan is a meditation practice that helps us to develop habits of greater ease and awareness of the body. Adopting a comfortable posture (lying down or sitting) we 'scan' through the whole body with our awareness, using the breath to 'let go' of areas of pain and/or tension.

This CD contains two body-scan meditations of different lengths. Body-scan meditation is a mindfulness practice that anyone can do while lying in bed or any other flat surface. The meditation directs attention to various parts of the body, bringing awareness and openness to the sensations that are experienced. By bringing awareness to these different areas, you'll begin to experience a relaxing of the muscles and joints, allowing you to be more fully present and at ease in your body.

The best Fibro book out there! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought "Parting the Fog" about 2-1/2 years ago along with about 15 other books on Fibro and found this book to be the absolute best! I was able to understand what I was reading unlike the other books that only doctors would be able to understand. The poems touched my heart and I could totally relate to almost each one of them in some way! I am so happy with this book that I tell everyone about it and have loaned it out to quite a few people in my support group. They have read my copy and loved it so much that they ordered their own copies! I would totally, 110% recommend this book. Sue Jones is an incredible author and an amazing person who shares in her book the trials and tribulations that go along with having Fibro. She also sets an example to others with Fibro that it's not the end of the road for us, there is life after the diagnosis! Well Done, Mrs. Jones!

Editorial Review:

"Parting the Fog" is a candid, first person account of what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone suffering from fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome. It relays the seriousness of this condition in an easy-to-read manner, while employing humor and focusing on hope. It is a combination of prose and inspiring poetry. Each of the 17 short chapter ends with a personal page to enable sufferers to record their own thoughts and experiences, if they so choose. It also includes: a "Don't Ask-Do Ask" list for "Normals"; a letter to supportive people; a description of the treatment plan the author believes holds the best hope of recovery from symptoms; and chapters on perspective, faith, loss and hope. It is unique, personal, and will help others understand the struggles those with FMS/CFS are faced with. It is an important addition to the FMS/CFS sufferer's library.

The best of its kind, but do not pay exorbitant prices! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The Chronic Pain Control Workbook is by far the best of its kind. It truly will walk a chronic pain sufferer through a step-by-step program that, if followed consistently, WILL improve the quality of the chronic sufferer's life. I have used it successfully with thousands of patients. HOWEVER, the book is now out-of-print (for some unfathomable reason that nether the publisher nor the authors care to explain) and I am seeing extreme price gouging! Don't fall for it and do not pay exorbitant prices for a book that's listed at $17.95. If you can't find a used one for a reasonable price, "The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook (2000, 5th edition, also by New Harbinger Publications) by M. Davis, Elizabeth Eshelman, and Matthew McKay - ISBN: 1572242140 covers almost all the topics just as well as the Pain Control Workbook does. What's missing are the chapters on medications, theories of pain, and vocational issues, but these are covered quite well elsewhere. The Relax workbook is available for list price of $19.95, but I have seen it used for as little as $10. A MUCH saner way to go!

Editorial Review:

Incorporating charts, diagrams, and illustrations, an easy-to-use workbook offers a practical, rational approach to controlling chronic pain through exercise, stress management, psychological techniques, medications, and support groups. Original. IP.

Editorial Review:

Chronic pain has a multitude of causes, many of which are not well understood or effectively treated by medical therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often report that pain interferes with their ability to engage in occupational, social, or recreational activities. Their inability to engage in these everyday activities may contribute to increased isolation, negative mood, and physical deconditioning, which in turn can contribute to their experience of pain.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective at managing various chronic pain conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and tension/migraine headache. CBT engages patients in an active coping process aimed at changing maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that can serve to maintain and exacerbate the experience of chronic pain. Managing Chronic Pain, Therapist Guide distills many of these empirically validated techniques into one convenient volume that no clinician can do without. Each session presents the basic methods of a technique, such as stress management, sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, and cognitive restructuring.
Designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding workbook, this therapist guide offers a complete treatment program. It provides session outlines, sample dialogues, and homework assignments for each technique, as well as addresses assessment and relapse. This CBT program can be used for the successful management of chronic pain, helping patients regain control of their lives.

kindly awareness 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

KINDLY AWARENESS
I have always loved this meditation for the feeling of love and intimacy to my friends strangers and the whole world that it gives but recently I had even greater reason to be thankful for it.

I was sent away from home for 6 weeks when my brother was born when I was 1year old. Then I was sexually abused by my father from when I was 5 to about 9. This is the first time I have written about these experiences but I am writing to show how much the Kindly Awareness and mindful moment practice can help even someone who has been deeply disturbed. These experiences have left me depressed and very scared of being alone. I have had lots of Counselling and lots of medication, some of it helpful and insightful(for a long time I didn't know why I was scared) some of it not.

Recently my eldest son went to live abroad for 2 years after living in Bristol and this induced the most terrible panic attacks in me. Then my younger son decided to leave home. I also got a terrible virus which relapsed my M.E. It was back on the merry-go-round of drugs and anti-depressants so that I just slept all day. Then when I managed to drag myself to a Retreat day and we were practicing the Kindly Awareness meditation (which I had been avoiding because I was scared to think about my feelings). Especially I have always been scared to have my father as the person I have difficulty with in case it brought on flash backs, overwhelming anger or fear. I cleared my mind to think how I was feeling emotionally, physically and mentally in THIS moment and it came to me that in this moment I am safe and in the next moment and the next moment. In other words when I cleared all the worries, fears, hang ups from the past out of my head for a moment I learned that I can be safe in each moment. Now every time I feel the fear coming back and I have accepted that it will come back instead of trying to avoid it (and avoiding issues takes such a lot of energy) I think to myself am I safe in this moment? If I am safe in this moment I can continue to be in each moment in spite of all that has happened. Of course there will be times in everyone's life occasionally that we are not safe, accidents and crimes do happen but they come from the real world and not in my fears and fantasies from the past which have dominated my life to now. Kindly Awareness and mindfulness is turning my life around.

............................................................................................................

Editorial Review:

This meditation practice helps us feel more positive, accepting and kindly towards both ourselves and others. It aims at cultivating a sense of connectedness and shared humanity with others, and is adapted from a traditional Buddhist meditation practice, the Metta Bhavana.

The CD includes two different approaches to the practice of developing kindly awareness.

A must read book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As someone who has studied and read a great deal on health issues, healing modalities and the integration of the human being as a whole I am very pleased to recommend this book. The book is a great tool to help anyone recognize the oneness of our nature, the power of awareness, and the potential within ourselves for well being and health.

Embodiment practices are a great tool to empower us and lead us to the recognition of our true nature.

I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in personal growth, wellbeing and a conscious life in all levels.

Editorial Review:

This book is a collection of writings on principles and techniques by the pioneers of bodywork and body awareness disciplines. Together, they represent a historical record of the field of somatics. Ranging from hands-on workers like Ida Rolf to phenomenologist Elizabeth Behnke, their lives span this century. In these lectures, writings, and interviews, editor Don Hanlon Johnson has sought to revel the unbroken lineage, theoretical differences, and major similarities of these originators.
