Editorial Review:

Chronic pain has a multitude of causes, many of which are not well understood or effectively treated by medical therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often report that pain interferes with their ability to engage in occupational, social, or recreational activities. Their inability to engage in these everyday activities may contribute to increased isolation, negative mood, and physical deconditioning, which in turn can contribute to their experience of pain.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective at managing various chronic pain conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and tension/migraine headache. CBT engages patients in an active coping process aimed at changing maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that can serve to maintain and exacerbate the experience of chronic pain. Managing Chronic Pain, Therapist Guide distills many of these empirically validated techniques into one convenient volume that no clinician can do without. Each session presents the basic methods of a technique, such as stress management, sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, and cognitive restructuring.
Designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding workbook, this therapist guide offers a complete treatment program. It provides session outlines, sample dialogues, and homework assignments for each technique, as well as addresses assessment and relapse. This CBT program can be used for the successful management of chronic pain, helping patients regain control of their lives.

Learn to Heal Yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Effortless Pain Relief is both an unusual and a really important book. It has a revolutionary and very effective approach to helping you heal yourself from chronic pain - back, neck or shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc. Its core idea is that chronic pain, no matter what its original cause, always involves muscle tension, and that letting go of the tension is letting go of the pain. The idea that muscular tension is the source of pain is not in itself that new. John Sarno, for example, in his book Mind Over Back Pain, holds to that view. But John Sarno's solution is just to ask you to figure out what problem in your life is causing the tension, and then you will feel better. That works sometimes, but a lot of times it doesn't. What if the source of the tension is unconscious? What if the source of the tension is the way we stand, breathe, or walk? Or what if the source of the tension comes from misalignment due to an accident? In each case, the author of Effortless Pain Relief gives you lots of tools for releasing tension in your body. Some of those tools involve changing the way you breathe. Some involve changing the way you stand, sit, or walk. Some involve learning how to identify and release habits of pushing through life that so many of us have. And some involve learning how to recognize unconscious emotional blocks. Ingrid Bacci does it all. She shows us how to let go of whatever is causing our pain. She shows you how to heal yourself. That's a great gift.

kindly awareness 5 out of 5 stars.

KINDLY AWARENESS
I have always loved this meditation for the feeling of love and intimacy to my friends strangers and the whole world that it gives but recently I had even greater reason to be thankful for it.

I was sent away from home for 6 weeks when my brother was born when I was 1year old. Then I was sexually abused by my father from when I was 5 to about 9. This is the first time I have written about these experiences but I am writing to show how much the Kindly Awareness and mindful moment practice can help even someone who has been deeply disturbed. These experiences have left me depressed and very scared of being alone. I have had lots of Counselling and lots of medication, some of it helpful and insightful(for a long time I didn't know why I was scared) some of it not.

Recently my eldest son went to live abroad for 2 years after living in Bristol and this induced the most terrible panic attacks in me. Then my younger son decided to leave home. I also got a terrible virus which relapsed my M.E. It was back on the merry-go-round of drugs and anti-depressants so that I just slept all day. Then when I managed to drag myself to a Retreat day and we were practicing the Kindly Awareness meditation (which I had been avoiding because I was scared to think about my feelings). Especially I have always been scared to have my father as the person I have difficulty with in case it brought on flash backs, overwhelming anger or fear. I cleared my mind to think how I was feeling emotionally, physically and mentally in THIS moment and it came to me that in this moment I am safe and in the next moment and the next moment. In other words when I cleared all the worries, fears, hang ups from the past out of my head for a moment I learned that I can be safe in each moment. Now every time I feel the fear coming back and I have accepted that it will come back instead of trying to avoid it (and avoiding issues takes such a lot of energy) I think to myself am I safe in this moment? If I am safe in this moment I can continue to be in each moment in spite of all that has happened. Of course there will be times in everyone's life occasionally that we are not safe, accidents and crimes do happen but they come from the real world and not in my fears and fantasies from the past which have dominated my life to now. Kindly Awareness and mindfulness is turning my life around.

Editorial Review:

This meditation practice helps us feel more positive, accepting and kindly towards both ourselves and others. It aims at cultivating a sense of connectedness and shared humanity with others, and is adapted from a traditional Buddhist meditation practice, the Metta Bhavana.

The CD includes two different approaches to the practice of developing kindly awareness.

A must read book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As someone who has studied and read a great deal on health issues, healing modalities and the integration of the human being as a whole I am very pleased to recommend this book. The book is a great tool to help anyone recognize the oneness of our nature, the power of awareness, and the potential within ourselves for well being and health.

Embodiment practices are a great tool to empower us and lead us to the recognition of our true nature.

I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in personal growth, wellbeing and a conscious life in all levels.

Editorial Review:

This book is a collection of writings on principles and techniques by the pioneers of bodywork and body awareness disciplines. Together, they represent a historical record of the field of somatics. Ranging from hands-on workers like Ida Rolf to phenomenologist Elizabeth Behnke, their lives span this century. In these lectures, writings, and interviews, editor Don Hanlon Johnson has sought to revel the unbroken lineage, theoretical differences, and major similarities of these originators.

Editorial Review:

Prescription opioids are dangergous in the hands of drug abusers, but they are also beneficial or even lifesaving for millions of people who otherwise would live with chronic pain. Clinicians who prescribe opioids are often caught between their professional obligation to relieve suffering and their desire to avoid contributing to the non-medical consumption of controlled substances.

Primary care physicians, nurse practioners and other first-contact clinicians are uniquely positioned to make a difference at the beginning of medical treatment. Research indicates that a patient with chronic pain or a substance-abuse disorder is far more likely to seek treatment from a family doctor than from a specialist. That reality creates an opportunity for front-line clinicians to maximize the chances for success when patients begin opioid therapy.

This book was written to help all interested parties (eg, clinicians who treat pain, drug and medical-practice regulators, law-enforcement authorities and pharmacists) to sort out the clinical, regulatory, and ethical issues associated with the prescribing of opioid analgesics and to reduce the risk of medication misuse, abuse, and diversion. The information presented here is based on the work of numerous experts in the fields of pain management and addicition medicine. If knowledge is power, then this information is intended to instill the power and confidence needed for clinicians to safely treat their patients' pain and restore their dignity and lost quality of life.

Editorial Review:

Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting as many as 48 million people in this country alone. It can demoralize and depress both patient and family, especially when there is no effective pain control and no hope for relief. Improperly managed, chronic pain can lead to substance abuse (usually painkillers) and to acute psychological and emotional distress. Pain begets stress and stress begets pain in a wretched downward spiral.

Silver reviews the causes and characteristics of chronic pain and explores its impact on individual family relationships and on the extended family, covering such issues as employment, parenting, childbearing and inheritance, and emotional health. Silver treats aspects of chronic pain not covered in a typical office visit: how men and women differ in their experience of chronic pain, the effect of chronic pain on a toddler's behavior or an older child's performance in school, the risks of dependence on and addiction to pain medications, and practical ways for relatives beyond the immediate family circle to offer help and support to the person in pain.

"This is a personal narrative, a record of my passage among victims of chronic pain and the discoveries that have come from those encounters. I write for physicians, nurses, therapists, and caregivers, but mostly, I write for you who suffer the disease. I know you very well, perhaps as well as anybody in the world. I have listened to your stories with patience and attention, and I have been greatly rewarded. You have trusted me with the deep recesses of your thoughts and fears, and the memories of the dreadful experiences that are so often the origin of chronic pain. I have treated thousands of you and I believe I have some understanding of your illness. I offer a series of essays about people like you who suffer chronic pain. From their case histories, I derive certain conclusions. Some conclusions are bold and imaginative. Some are disturbing and frightful. Not all of them will apply to you, but some certainly will. My wish is that you gain greater understanding of your illness, for only understanding it will you conquer it." Robert T. Cochran Jr., MD

Dogeared My Copy 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

As stated in the credits on the first page, this book provides "reliable, practical information on managing chronic pain." What it doesn't say is just how invaluable this book can be for all of us who have suffered. Until I read this book, I had not realized that I had been living with pain since before entering grade school - and this book gave me the insight and tools to face it and deal with it constructively. I bought it at the recommendation of one of my physical therapists to help with my recently diagnosed fibromyalgia, but found a wealth of information that has helped me recognize and acknowledge emotional and behavioral stages of pain that I have been cycling through, unrecognized, for decades. I had just written off my symptoms as part of being bipolar, as being something I just had to put up with. Through physical therapy and reading this book, I now see how I have become physically, emotionally, and behaviorally misaligned and crippled as the direct result of pain. This book, an easy read, almost every page post-it tagged, has drawn the interest of everyone I've shown it to or discussed it with. It explains chronic pain - how to understand it, recognize it, treat it, and manage it. It has chapters that include evaluations of standard and alternative therapies and their documented effectiveness or lack of, how to set goals, find the right doctor for your situation, deal with your emotions and behaviors, manage stress, get healthy through diet and exercise, how your pain affects those close to you, how to organize your day, and includes a personal planner, great additional resources, and more. REALLY packed with the latest tested research and developments in the area of chronic pain from one of the great medical clinics. I can't rate this book highly enough. If you or someone you know is suffering in any way shape or form from any kind of chronic pain, this book is a lifesaver. Buy it, read it, pass it around, share it with your doctor.

A SCIENTIFIC WORK WITH IMMEDIATE CLINICAL APPLICATIONS. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book will be a "classic" for both professionals and patients alike. Dr.Sadigh masterfully weaves through the literature on Fibromyalgia, Stress & Pain, and Autogenic Training setting up "Part III", a tour de force on "Training, Biofeedback, and Treatment of Insomnia"

He walks you through a six step sequence of Autogenic Training Exercises as if you were sitting in his office. The chapters are clear, concise and have immediate clinical applications. Of particular interest and help are the "Case Examples" and "Common Difficulties" sections which follow each Autogenic Exercise sequence. These sections as well as the "Questions & Answers" chapter assist the clinician or patient as if the Doctor himself were right there answering your very questions.

This book is a landmark compilation crossing many boundaries that will be a mainstay on the book shelves of professionals and patients for years to come.

I only hope that Dr. Sadigh will follow this book with a CD or Tape Set consisting of the Autogenic Training Exercises that he so expertly presented in this book. Having a tape or CD to practice the exercises would truely give people suffering from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain, and Stress & Cognitive Anxiety the opportunity to derive ongoing benefit from the information presented in this masterful book.

Thank you for you magnificent contribution in helping sufferers worldwide!

Editorial Review:

Here is a step-by-step clinical guide which uses autogenic training principles to help clinicians treat patients suffering from chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Autogenic training is a scientific method of treatment which is based on psycho-physiological principles. This volume is the most precise and detailed ever written on autogenic training and its use in the treatment of chronic conditions, and can be used as both a treatment guide and a textbook for courses in applied psycho-physiology, nursing, pain management, stress management, behavioral medicine, and biofeedback.
