Editorial Review:

Too often the term "sustainable living" carries ponderous overtones, as if only government policymakers or serious academics could understand the key ideas. Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth explains the Earth's cycles in a lively and colorful way that is comprehensible to Earthlings who are normal curious citizens of the planet, including students of all ages.
Providing a remarkably accessible introduction to the scientific discipline known as "systems theory," Dr. Art describes the three main components that comprise existence on Earth—matter, energy, and life. Next he explains the reciprocal loops that define "Earth's operating system"—matter cycles, energy flows, and life webs. The Earth continuously receives energy from the sun, which directly or indirectly fuels all our vital processes, then leaves the planet as heat that flows to outer space. Dr. Art celebrates the vast and intricate network of relationships that connect the planet's organisms with each other and with the cycles of matter and flows of energy. The book concludes with practical advice about what we can actually do to live in environmentally healthy communities.
The portrait of the planet presented here is one that provides a foundation for the world view of Chelsea Green's Beyond the Limits and Believing Cassandra. This is not "Sustainable Living for Dummies" or even "Sustainable Living Lite," but rather a colorful, entertaining, and memorable introduction to a subject we all need to understand better—how our planet works.
"Dr. Art" Sussman is a scientist and nationally acclaimed educator who teaches complex environmental concepts in ways that are meaningful, innovative, and fun. He has performed his "Environmental Medicine Show" for students and teachers throughout the country. Through Dr. Art's book, interactive show, and related Web sites, many more people will learn about the primary systems that govern a complex planet.
The Children's Book Council has selected the Chelsea Green publication Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth as an "Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children for 2001." This award is the result of a cooperative project between the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the Children's Book Council. Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth was also highlighted as a "Selector's Choice," a designation for books to which the review panelists responded with particular enthusiasm. The Children's Book Council publishes the full list in the March 2001 issue of the NSTA publication "Science and Children," and displays copies of the selected books at meetings and conventions around the country.

Editorial Review:

In these days of shortened fiscal horizons and contracted time-to-market schedules, traditional approaches to capacity planning are often seen by management as tending to inflate their production schedules. Rather than giving up in the face of this kind of relentless pressure to get things done faster, Guerrilla Capacity Planning facilitates rapid forecasting of capacity requirements based on the opportunistic use of whatever performance data and tools are available in such a way that management insight is expanded but their schedules are not.

A key Guerrilla concept is tactical planning whereby short-range planning questions and projects are brought up in team meetings such that management is compelled to know the answer, and therefore buys into capacity planning without recognizing it as such. Once you have your "foot in the door", capacity planning methods can be refined in an iterative cycle of improvement called "The Wheel of Capacity Planning". Another unique Guerrilla tool is Virtual Load Testing, based on Dr. Gunther's "Universal Law of Computational Scaling", which provides a highly cost-effective method for assessing application scalability.

Importantly, it provides valuable information on improving ones research capabilities on the Internet for class presentations and papers. This 272 page comprehensive, easy-to-read instructional book is well worth the price.

the main uses of the Internet 4 out of 5 stars.

If you browse the Web, and would like to know more about its underpinnings, but hail from a nontechnical background, then this book can be quite informative.

The authors go into the main usages of the Internet. Email and browsing are the most prominent. The first two killer apps. You can see that the Internet and the Web are not synonymous. Though many people use the terms interchangeably. It was the development of HTML and its partner, HTTP, that gave rise to browsers and the World Wide Web.

The book also explains other usages. Always striving to minimise the technical jargon. Though you do get enough of the latter to at least now have some understanding of what they entail.

Editorial Review:

Part of the Illustrated Series, this text offers a visual, flexible and step-by-step approach for learning about the Internet, including such topics as: browsing, e-mail, searching, communicating on the Web, and Web browser security.

Make sure you get the up to date version! 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book new from Amazon. I just recentley found out that the software disk provided no longer works and that there should have been a new version disk included with the book. You must have the correct disk to complete the labs. So basicly I have a new door stop!
Buyer Beware!

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This was used as the textbook for the ethical hacking class I took last fall. It was a great intro book although some of the links are outdated and the CD did not work (the CD did not work for anyone regardless of the source - including the campus bookstore)

I kept the book for reference.

Editorial Review:

With cyber-terrorism and corporate espionage threatening the fiber of our world, the need for trained network security professionals continues to grow. This book describes the tools and penetration testing methodologies used by ethical hackers to better understand how to protect computer networks. A thorough discussion is first established outlining what and who an ethical hacker is, and how important they are in protecting corporate and government data from cyber attacks. This title provides a structured knowledge base for preparing security professionals to understand how to protect a network using some of the skills and tools of a penetration or ethical hacker.

Excellent examples, great for PMP exam 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is much shorter than my best-selling Information Technology Project Management text, now in its 4th edition, but it's still packed with great information. It follows the processes used in the new PMBOK Guide, so it will definitely help you study for the PMP exam. The best thing about this book is that instead of just talking about a lot of the documents and tools you can use when managing a project, it shows you realistic examples of them as applied to a project that is described throughout the book. There are also lots of examples of what went right and wrong based on real projects in various industries and countries, media snapshots to show how PM is used in so many aspects of our lives, cartoons, quick quizzes at the end of each chapter, discussion questions, exercises, and team projects. The companion Web site also provides templates, lots of interactive quizzes, a detailed guide to using Project 2003 or 2003, and lots of other info. Great text for an individual and especially for a general course in project management at the undergrad or graduate level.

Editorial Review:

New from best-selling author Kathy Schwalbe, Introduction to Project Management offers a general yet concise introduction to project management. This book provides up-to-date information on how good project, program, and portfolio management can help you achieve organizational success. It includes over 50 samples of tools and techniques applied to one large project, and is suitable for all majors, including business, engineering, healthcare, and more.

Editorial Review:

Fundamentals of Digital Logic With VHDL Design teaches the basic design techniques for logic circuits. It emphasizes the synthesis of circuits and explains how circuits are implemented in real chips. Fundamental concepts are illustrated by using small examples, which are easy to understand. Then, a modular approach is used to show how larger circuits are designed. VHDL is used to demonstrate how the basic building blocks and larger systems are defined in a hardware description language, producing designs that can be implemented with modern CAD tools.

. .

The book emphasizes the concepts that should be covered in an introductory course on logic design, focusing on: .

    .
  • Logic functions, gates, and rules of Boolean algebra.
  • Circuit synthesis and optimization techniques.
  • Number representation and arithmetic circuits.
  • Combinational-circuit building blocks, such as multiplexers, decoders, encoders, and code converters.
  • Sequential-circuit building blocks, such as flip-flops, registers, and counters.
  • Design of synchronous sequential circuits.
  • Use of the basic building blocks in designing larger systems.
.

.

It also includes chapters that deal with important, but more advanced topics:.

    .
  • Design of asynchronous sequential circuits.
  • Testing of logic circuits.
. For students who have had no exposure to basic electronics, but are interested in learning a few key concepts, there is a chapter that presents the most basic aspects of electronic implementation of digital circuits..

.

Major changes in the second edition of the book include.

    .
  • new examples to clarify the presentation of fundamental concepts.
  • over 50 new examples of solved problems provided at the end of chapters.
  • NAND and NOR gates now introduced in Chapter 2.
  • more complete discussion of techniques for minimization of logic functions in Chapter 4 (including the tabular method).
  • a new chapter explaining the CAD flow for synthesis of logic circuits.
  • Altera's Quartus II CAD software provided on a CD-ROM.
  • three appendices that give tutorials on the use of Quartus II software.
