Editorial Review:

Traditionally, tools for performance tuning, testing applications, and debugging code have been expensive, hard to learn, and difficult to use. While previous versions of Microsoft Visual Studio® have included debuggers and other code-improvement tools, Visual Studio 2005 presents developers with robust and useful tools and processes to help ensure top-quality code. In this guide, an expert on improving code, John Robbins, steps back from the expert-level information that characterized his previous debugging books to present hands-on, practical advice for working developers on how to use the debugging, testing, and tuning features in Visual Studio 2005. In addition to an overview of the science of debugging and expertly-guided instruction, this guide also features solutions to common, real-world development problems. Developers of all skill levels will be able to use this book to help improve their understanding of debugging, debugging tools, tuning, and testing! , including how to effectively employ Test Explorer, the Enterprise Performance Tool, and WinDbg.

Not the Best Intro Book for Everyone 4 out of 5 stars.
43 of 43 people found this review helpful.

I think this is an excellent book for someone interested in constructing complex adaptive systems. It clearly lays out the technical guidelines that you would need. And of course, it was written by the man who originated genetic algorithms!

However, if you are new to the phenomena of complex adaptive systems (CAS) or agent-based models (ABM), this might not be the best intro book for you. This is particularly true if you are wondering what a genetic algorithm is right now. I think you will get the most out of the book if you are already somewhat familiar with CAS and ABM as Holland does not dwell on illustrative examples. (Yes there are examples, but they are very short compared to other authors on this topic.) Because of this, I think this book will be rather dry and technical and non-intuitive for a real newbie. If you have no idea where to begin, try _Growing Artificial Societies_ by Joshua Epstein and Robert Axtell.

One final comment: for excellent in-depth look at the reiterated Prisoner's Dilemna model with genetic algorithms that Holland briefly discusses, read _The Complexity of Cooperation_ by Robert Axelrod. (Axelrod and Holland mention each other in their books.)

Editorial Review:

This work explains how scientists who study the field of complexity are convinced that certain constant processes are at work in all kinds of unrelated complex systems. The author also illustrates the relevance of scientific debate to the layman.

STILL the best book on the subject 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've looked high and low for a text summarizing systems theory and I write this review in near shock having just finished this book. I say "shock" because I just can't believe how remarkably undated this book is after nearly 40 years (first edition 1969). I've read books by Checkland, Lazlo, Weinberg and many others but nothing summarizes the systems world view better than this classic. You've gotta love a scientist/philosopher who quotes Aldous Huxley liberally. I'd give it six stars if I could.

General Systems Theory is DEEP 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Bertalanffy is one of the best educated men and deepest thinkers ever. General Systems Theory is a monument to his greatness. Keep a dictionary handy, and brush up on your Latin. This is the top of the intellectual mountain, where men no longer tread.

He changed modern population theory 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Although he wrote a lot about the general theory of systems,
I think it is his approach to the problems of how living systems
interact with their environment in a catabolic manner
that makes him really important.
He has had impact from fields like biology to
fluid dynamics.
He set a standard for how we think about history
and with Lewis F. Richardson The Collected Papers of Lewis Fry Richardson (Collected Papers of Lewis Fry Richardson, Vol 2)and Isaac AsimovThe Foundation Trilogy
made a science possible.

Editorial Review:

Von Bertalanffy's writings on general system theory, selected to show its evolution and to present its applications to problem solving.

Gives no real insight 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If your goal is to actually learn something about Analysis Services and OLAP cubes / datawarehousing, I wouldn't bother buying this book. Well, the first chapter brought some insight to the topics, but the rest of the book is really a step-by-step - point-and-click tutorial in the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS), and the SQL Server Management Studio. The chapter about MDX left me more confused than before.

If your goal is to get a simple datawarehouse and cube up and running, with the least amount of insight, it might do the trick. (But where's the fun in that...)

Editorial Review:

Your hands-on guide to learning Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, Microsoft’s customizable analysis solution for business data modeling and interpretation. Analysis Services is a powerful tool for business intelligence, so understanding the essentials—how to create a cube, as well as how to deploy, customize, and extend the basic calculations—is critical to harnessing the full benefits of SQL Server. This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to get started, how to build scalable analytical applications, and how to use and administer advanced features. Interactivity features (enhanced in SQL Server 2005), data translation, and security are also covered in detail. With STEP BY STEP, you work at your own pace through hands-on, learn-by-doing exercises. Whether you’re a beginning programmer or new to this version of the technology, you’ll understand the fundamental techniques for using Analysis Services. A companion CD includes data sets and sample code.

Good content overall 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I used this book in graduate school while taking the Database Management System course. The book has usefull information. It help me understand and practice normalization. Some unfamiliar concepts also were learnt from the book. I can recommend this book to anyone getting into the database world.

Not an easy read 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Our database teacher recommended this book. I bought this book and found it not an easy read. After going through the whole book still I could not understand how the database design process works. Then I went on google to look for some thing easy to understand. I found a book called "Relational database design for starters: Explained through a case study in Microsoft Access" by Akmal Masood. This book is very easy to understand and after finishing the book, I was able to understand how the database design works.

Editorial Review:

Designed for an introductory course in database management which is usually required as part of an information systems curriculum in business school, computer technology programs, and applied computer science departments.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very good for the beginner. But no Unix book can teach everything. That's why I found it better to also buy the Unix Essentials DVD. It's way better when you have both. And it only costs $5,325.99. You need these DVDs. You really do! Hee hee! Just kidding. But I really am sick of all those fake reviews that advertise these over-priced DVDs!

Great Seller 5 out of 5 stars.

Great transaction. The book was exactly as described, shipped quickly at a great price.

Editorial Review:

A reference to working on a UNIX network. It discusses UNIX operating systems, including UNIXWare 7 from the Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) and Solaris 2.7 from Sun. This edition also gives attention to the impact of Windows 98 on UNIX and the changes to anticipate with the release of Windows NT. It guides the reader through setting up UNIX terminals, file and directory management, print management, writing UNIX applications, installing and managing UNIX software, working with the UNIX-like LINUX OS, connecting to the Internet via UNIX and also basic troubleshooting and repair.
