Good story, but needs a handout with facts and figures 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very good on the philosophy behind "designing" presentations. On how to use visuals and how to make your presentation into an engaging story. Unfortunately the book focuses too much on visuals and on (a bit superficial) presentation and design philosophy. Also the author contradicts himself with the last chapters in the book which are completely unneccessary. While in the first half of the book he argues convincingly for less is more. A bit more facts and figures or bulletpoints might help this book. But maybe those are in the handout? I recommend this book for those who are first time presenters or when looking for new twists. But it might be a bit lightweight for people who have to give "deep" presentations.

Editorial Review:

A bold new way to tackle tough business problems—even if you draw like a second grader

When Herb Kelleher was brainstorming about how to beat the traditional hub-and- spoke airlines, he grabbed a bar napkin and a pen. Three dots to represent Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Three arrows to show direct flights. Problem solved, and the picture made it easy to sell Southwest Airlines to investors and customers.

Used properly, a simple drawing on a humble napkin is more powerful than Excel or PowerPoint. It can help crystallize ideas, think outside the box, and communicate in a way that people simply “get”. In this book Dan Roam argues that everyone is born with a talent for visual thinking, even those who swear they can’t draw.

Drawing on twenty years of visual problem solving combined with the recent discoveries of vision science, this book shows anyone how to clarify a problem or sell an idea by visually breaking it down using a simple set of visual thinking tools – tools that take advantage of everyone’s innate ability to look, see, imagine, and show.

THE BACK OF THE NAPKIN proves that thinking with pictures can help anyone discover and develop new ideas, solve problems in unexpected ways, and dramatically improve their ability to share their insights. This book will help readers literally see the world in a new way.

Expensive, Bloated, But Useful 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This textbook is expensive. I think the price is absurd.

However, the information contained is worthwhile. Guffey could have condensed a lot of material.

Things that work in the book's favor are the checklists at the end of sections and a summary of the chapter. Small useful side menus abbreviating useful terminology or steps are littered through out the book; and they are worthwhile to review and use.

Condense the text and make it more affordable. I say to Guffey stop aiding Publishers the in grifting of student's pockets.

A manual for all 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I will suggest this manual to every couple, especially the newly wed, even before suggesting any "how to ..my babie". I wish I had this book 40 years ago, most of my troubles would have never come. Many manuals out there, such "How to satisfy your woman/man" and such are just the mechanics of human relation, this is its soul.
Matter of fact I will bring a copy to Italy next May to two newly wed couples.

basic and simple 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is easy to read and understand. You don't have to run to the dictionary every five words. I recommend it to any interested in communications. The concepts work in all situations, not just business. It was a great help.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was very helpful. Communication is the most important tool people can have, and so many people are so bad at it. This guide gives great tips for how to be a better and effective communicator.

Must-Have Quick Reference 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Munter's book is short in length but long on content. I purchased this book as part of an MBA class on Executive Communication, but have found myself referring to it for everything from a quick memo to formal presentations. This would make an excellent gift for new managers or anyone wanting to improve the quality and efficacy of their communication.

MBA Required Item - Outrageous Price! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is another example of the ridiculous pricing for school text books. If you are required to purchase this book for MBA School, don't be surprised when you receive it. I guarantee the initial response will be "what - 40+ dollars for this?" The content may be exceptional but the book itself inspires one to ask the question why am I spending this much money for a small paper bound book?

The Gregg Reference Manual - Phenomenal 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the manual to use when I edit other people's documents. I have not had a chance to really go through and use the manual as yet because I've been busy with other things. I have flipped through the pages just to see what it offered and I have seen how terrific this manual is. It has everything a person would need in helping them to decide the best way to use grammar, spelling, editing, punctuation whether in editing or in writing. Use of the manual is great when writing business letters, addressing different dignitaries, and the list goes on. It would be especially helpful to the "Writers" of the world, and also especially if the non-Writers of the world or just anyone who couldn't remember certain things they were taught in English class in High School or College, this manual will definitely help.

I graded The Gregg Reference Manual five stars not because I've gone through the whole book, because I haven't as I mentioned above, but because if you open one or two pages, you can definitely see what this manual has to offer. It is well worth having. In fact, everybody needs a manual like the Gregg Manual. It would behoove any person to purchase this manual.

Now, if I can rate the Gregg Reference Manual with five stars without going through the whole manual yet, you can imagine what you, me, or anybody could accomplish by going through it from beginning to end. A person needs this manual next to them at all times, like you do with a dictionary.

Buy it!! It's well worth the money.

Editorial Review:

Casey McDaniel had never been so nervous in his life.

In just ten minutes, The Meeting, as it would forever be known, would begin.  Casey had every reason to believe that his performance over the next two hours would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch.

“How could my life have unraveled so quickly?” he wondered.

In his latest page-turning work of business fiction, best-selling author Patrick Lencioni provides readers with another powerful and thought-provoking book, this one centered around a cure for the most painful yet underestimated problem of modern business: bad meetings.  And what he suggests is both simple and revolutionary.

Casey McDaniel, the founder and CEO of Yip Software, is in the midst of a problem he created, but one he doesn’t know how to solve.  And he doesn’t know where or who to turn to for advice.  His staff can’t help him; they’re as dumbfounded as he is by their tortuous meetings.

Then an unlikely advisor, Will Peterson, enters Casey’s world.  When he proposes an unconventional, even radical, approach to solving the meeting problem, Casey is just desperate enough to listen.

As in his other books, Lencioni provides a framework for his groundbreaking model, and makes it applicable to the real world.  Death by Meeting is nothing short of a blueprint for leaders who want to eliminate waste and frustration among their teams, and create environments of engagement and passion.

The best business communication textbook on the market 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I've been teaching this course for 20 years, and I've used various editions of this text for the past 15 years. The book is now in its 9th edition, which is the best edition yet.

The book is beautifully written, concise, and has a strong scholarly foundation. A look at the reference section at the end of the book shows more than a 1,000 sources the authors used in writing the book. In terms of overall length, however, the book is about the same as other texts in the field.

I've reviewed virtually all of the leading business communication texts, and this book is miles ahead of the competition. For example, while other textbooks for this course are still emphasizing paper documents, this book is the only business communication textbook that gives extensive coverage of electronic documents. Students will see actual examples of blogs, instant messages, RSS newsfeeds, wikis, and podcasts (actual podcasts for students to analyze are on the authors' website). Amazingly, examples of these electronic documents aren't contained in any of the competing books.

Semester after semester, my students have rated this book very highly. The authors are to be commended for their outstanding work!

Editorial Review:

Delivering the most comprehensive selection of model documents, market-leading Bovée/Thill remains the only text that reflects the multimedia emphasis of real-world business communication.

The field’s leading text for more than two decades, Business Communication Today continues to provide cutting-edge coverage students can count on to prepare them for real business practice. Thoroughly revised, updated, and streamlined, the succinct new ninth edition encompasses every medium that students will be expected to use on the job—from conventional printed documents and formal reports to e-mail and instant messages to blogs, podcasts, and wikis.
