Now my voice book of recommendation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Being a video / film producer for over 20 years I know what's needed in voice delivery. I found this book enlightening, the exercises instructive and Ms Williams's humor delightful. She obviously coaches those at the top of their game and understands vocals as an instrument and tool. I hire voice talent. This will now be my recommended book on voice.

Voice Power 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is not only packed with practical advice, but it's immensely entertaining as well. The chapters on breathing, delivery techniques and voice care are full of helpful and easy to understand suggestions. The section on using speaking devices such as rhythm, volume and silence is an absolute gold mine for anyone wanting to command attention before an audience. Kudos to the author for including a section on voice care. Thanks to the advice in this book, I recently ran to the pharmacy for zinc lozenges at the first hint of a sore throat. In addition to the practical tips, the personal anecdotes and clever writing style kept me smiling throughout. This book will stay within an arm's reach of my desk. What a great resource.

Practical classic that works for multiple audiences 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This practical classic of business communication works for multiple audiences from MBA students and project managers to undergraduate business students and international business working in English as a second language. The concise, clear entries explain topics, provide model documents, and cover an impressive range of alphabetically arranged materials.

While the new 9th edition features orange highlighted text, more weblinks, and a stronger section on visuals, budget conscious consumers can find plenty of value in this 8th edition. The basic principles of business writing remain the same - and same English grammar problems puzzle writers today as a few years ago. ESL students, by the way, will especially appreciate the short grammar tips and editing suggestions.

Bottomline: The Business Writer's Handbook should be on your bookshelf if you work in business, write business documents, or study business communication. If you can afford the 9th edition, buy it. Otherwise, pick up this classic in the 8th edition and save yourself some money.

Editorial Review:

Minutes are vital to the success of meetings. Attendees rely on them for information they may have missed and they serve as an essential communications tool for non-participants. In addition, the action points highlighted in minutes act as a timely reminder for the whole organization. Minute-taking is such a crucial part of business management meetings but there is a common misconception that all secretaries and administrators can simply take minutes.

Taking minutes involves listening skills, the ability to absorb information and to summarize it simultaneously. The minute-taker is one of the most important and powerful people in a meeting. Although the tasks can be daunting, it is an opportunity to develop knowledge, broaden horizons and build credibility within the organization.

Now in its second edition, Taking Minutes of Meetings is an accessible reference guide following the whole meeting cycle. Starting with organising a meeting, it goes on to give reliable, hands-on advice about the sections of a meeting; the agenda; personal preparation; taking notes; accuracy; structuring notes; writing up the minutes and recording decisions and actions. Aimed at anyone new to taking minutes and professionals looking to brush up their technique.

Editorial Review:

THE CRAFT OF SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS provides a score of examples from contemporary and historical scientific presentations to show clearly what makes an oral presentation effective. It considers presentations made to persuade an audience to adopt some course of action (such as funding a proposal) as well as presentations made to communicate information, and it considers these from four perspectives: speech, structure, visual aids, and delivery. In keeping with technological innovations, it discusses computer-based projections and slide shows as well as overhead projections. In particular, it discusses ways of organizing graphics and text in projected images and of using layout and design to present the information efficiently and effectively.

Unlike other books that discuss technical presentations, this book anchors its advice in the experiences of scientists and engineers, including such successful presenters as Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Niels Bohr, and Rita Levi-Montalcini, as well as currently active laboratory directors, scientists, and engineers.

In addition to examining successful presentations, Alley also discusses the errors that cause many scientific presentations to flounder, providing a list of ten critical errors to avoid. The insights and tools in this book will guide readers to deliver outstanding presentations.

Praise for Michael Alley's THE CRAFT OF SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS:

"Alley has revamped the way our research center makes presentations-particularly the way we design our presentation slides." DANIEL J. INMAN, DIRECTOR CENTER FOR INTELLIGENT MATERIAL SYSTEMS

"This book fills a void by illustrating key issues and difficulties in oral presentations with the experiences of others." CHRISTENE MOORE, COMMUNICATION INSTRUCTOR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN

A Communication Giant Shares His Speaking Strategies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Every time I direct a Presentation Skills seminar or provide communication coaching for executives, I recommend this book. I'll explain why.

Roger Ailes has strong credentials for writing a book about giving speeches. Prior to launching Fox News just over a decade ago, he had served as a speech writer and coach for the first President Bush, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani, and other public figures. Next, he became a talent scout for TV stations, helping them find anchors who could boost ratings.

I recommend You Are the Message for several reasons. First, the author's credentials I cited. Second, the book's straightforward approach, with clear, simple language.Third, Ailes gives readers a number of gems like these to keep in mind as they prepare speeches:

On being yourself: "You don't have to assume a phony posture. You just have to be you at your best. You already have the magic of communication in you, because nobody can play you as well as you can."

On composure: "If you are uncomfortable with who you are,it will make others uncomfortable too."

On style: "The best communicators I've ever known never changed their style of delivery from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're delivering a speech, having an intimate conversation, or being interviewed on a TV talk show."

On choosing your topic: "If you care, they care."

On energy: "I can correct fifteen communication problems with one ounce of energy."

On enthusiasm: "If the audience knows you care about what you're doing, you can forget about most speaking techniques."

If you're going to buy one book about preparing and delivering speeches, I recommend You Are the Message.

The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

Editorial Review:

"You are the message." What does that mean, exactly? It means that when you communicate with someone, it's not just the words you choose to send to the other person that make up the message.  You're also sending signals about what kind of person you are--by your eyes, your facial expression, your body movement, your vocal pitch, tone, volume, and intensity, your commitment to your message, your sense of humor, and many other factors.

The receiving person is bombarded with symbols and signals from you. Everything you do in relation to other people causes them to make judgments about what you stand for and what your message is.  "You are the message" comes down to the fact that unless you identify yourself as a walking, talking message, you miss that critical point.

The words themselves are meaningless unless the rest of you is in synchronization.  The total you affects how others think of and respond to you.

Positively Outstanding Propositions! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An awesome book for jazzing up your writing and speaking. Sam Horn crams so many ideas for creating buzz and imprinting your message and brand in the minds of listeners and readers that I found myself making checklists as I ran through the draft of my last book trying to find places I could use her principles and ideas. It's not all about marketing either. She has great ideas on the use of stories and quotes in your writing, how to create memorable content using lists and alliteration, and plenty of other techniques to make your writing come alive.

It's easy and fun to read as Sam is very clearly one of her own best students. Her writing is tight and wonderfully informative with no filler. The ideas are things nearly anyone that has to communicate (verbally or in writing) can use right away.

I felt a little bit self conscious rating this 5 stars: every other reviewer thus far has given it 5 stars as well. But 5 stars it is! I'd say that's a pretty clear message about the strength of the material.

It's the best marketing lesson you can buy for $15.

A powerful tool for entrepreneurs, businesspeople, authors, and anyone who wants to break out big, the POP! process is a fun, fascinating, strategic approach for making messages Purposeful, Original, and Pithy-to generate instant intrigue and word-of-mouth buzz.

A must-have for first-time and experienced board members alike, who will benefit from William G. Bowen's decades of experience.

Former Mellon Foundation and Princeton University president William G. Bowen has served on the boards of some of the United States's biggest corporations and nonprofits, including American Express, Merck, the Smithsonian, and TIAA-CREF. In The Board Book he brings his immense experience, along with the recollections and insights of numerous colleagues, to bear on the most pressing questions facing boards of directors and trustees today. His topics include the hot-button issues of the relationship between CEOs and board members, "perks," executive compensation, and CEO transitions. In addition, Bowen offers advice on the "machinery" required to run a board effectively, including the uses of committees and executive sessions, the handling of leaks, and the recruitment of new board members. Throughout, Bowen relates, with anecdotes and hard data, strategies that result in the collegiality and sense of purpose that make any board more effective.
