Outstanding Guidebook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The most redeeming quality of this book is its brutal honesty in the information it provides and recommendations it makes. When something sucks, the book says it sucks and to avoid it. That's the kind of information I want when I know my time and money are at stake on a vacation.

Web reviews of hotels and condos are free on their website and they are short, candid and informative (if a place is bad, they say it's bad). They also provide an aerial photograph of the property that really lets you know what you're getting--which is worth the price of the book itself.

Road maps are outstanding and directions are good for the most part. Occasionally directions are a bit vague, but it's still better than any map you will find anywhere else. The real value comes from the stuff that you won't find in other guidebooks like backwoods hiking trails, little known spots off the main path and insights that come from the fact that the authors actually live in Hawaii. The chapters are well organized and information is easily found thanks to a detailed table of contents, color-coded chapters (tabs would have been better, but probably more expensive) and index. Related info is cross-referenced throughout the book, which is also helpful. Best of all, the book is small and easily carried wherever you decide to go.

Perhaps the only negative aspect of the book is that the authors do tend to get lost in their narrative at times--mixing collateral trivia with the guide information. It's a nice story, but at times I could have done without the extra stuff.

This book is truly and outstanding guidebook for all types of tourists, but is especially valuable for those kind of people that hate guided tours and prepackaged vacation experiences. It adds a sense of adventure to your trip and a satisfying feeling when you realize that your time and money were spent on your own terms.

Editorial Review:

USA Today calls it, "An authoritative and in-depth look at all that the island offers." The author is a resident who personally and anonymously reviews every facet of Maui. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails, he sees it all and shows you the best Maui has to offer.

Editorial Review:

Get To The Heart of Your Destination
Half of Hawaii's 8 million yearly tourists are first-timers, often unsure of which island to visit, where to stay, and what to choose to do.
NO WORRIES HAWAII, a companion book to the Sprout's adventure guides for each of the islands, comes to the rescue. The book is also useful for repeat visitors or locals looking for new adventures.
Readers first take an armchair voyage, in which they nail down their vacation style (a scouting expedition, a romantic getaway, a solo or group adventure, invigorating, relaxing, healing). These likings are matched with what Hawaii has to offer. A clever but simple self-test allows readers to sort through Hawaii's assets: beaches, nightlife, trails, gardens, attractions, cultural sites, surfing, snorkeling, 36 categories in all, to determine which are important and which island is best.
In the second part of NO WORRIES HAWAII, readers take their decisions from part one and receive all the practical and money-saving advice needed to book a vacation that makes the armchair voyage become a real one. Included also is a complete list of what to pack.
The third part of the book is full of tips on what to do and what not to do after arriving in the islands. Readers will deplane as kama'aina (locals), having the benefit of the Sprout's 20 years of exploration.
Sections include how to plan days to maximize fun and avoid hassle, finding free entertainment, car rental and accommodation money-savers. Readers are advised on how to, and whether to, book tours (snorkeling, sailing, helicopter, horseback, etc.). The book's safety tips are a literal lifesaver, and the everyday advice on driving, hiking, and beach-going are essential forgetting the most fun out of every day.
The meat of NO WORRIES HAWAII is its Best Of section, a listing of Hawaii's top attractions: museums, rainforest dayhikes, snorkeling coves, walk-around beach towns, surfing spots, places to watch surfers, mountain bike trails, people-watching beaches, botanical gardens, short strolls to views, cultural sites, luxury resorts, volcano hikes, bird-watching forests, waterfalls, churches, remote beaches, family beach parks, golf courses, and more.
Taken together, the 50 categories neatly sum up the best of Hawaii. Readers can use these listings as a reference when they get to their chosen island.
NO WORRIES HAWAII is beautifully designed, complimented by more than 100 color photographs, and also contains a "wikiwiki phonebook" with all the contact numbers needed to put a vacation together.

Editorial Review:

This book evolved from the popular download version which has guided thousands of Maui visitors in navigating America's most expensive place to eat out.

It is unprecedented because of its scope and by virtue of the fact that it is written by restaurant critics. James and Molly Jacobson are two big-city-exiles who live on Maui and dine out an average of 11 times per week. Their honest, take-no-prisoners review guide is written with the philosophy that people who love to eat and prefer not to waste money on bad food should know the truth about Maui's well-marketed dining scene.

Top Maui Restaurants is packed with local insights and insider tips. Reading this book before and during your trip is like having a best friend in paradise who steers you away from the tourist traps and guides you to the real gems. The online version is updated every month with the most accurate, up-to-date reviews and information, and readers of this book can get the latest download free at TopMauiTips.com.

Paid for itself after one use 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I used this guide for a 5 day trip to Maui in January 08. We found the reviews to be up-to-date and accurate. Yes, the descriptions are brief, but this is meant to be a lightweight pocket guide that you can throw in your beach bag or keep in the glove box of your rental car, whether you use it on the fly to find a casual place to munch, or want to plan for something a little more upscale but still within a budget. Most of the places listed here are casual condo resort restaurants, "mom & pop" digs, or fall under the "fast food" category (but there's only one chain restaurant listed). But afterall, this is Maui and unless you are at the Four Seasons or other upscale resort area restaurant you are probably fine to roll in with your flip flops and a t-shirt. We liked the specifics like instructions on where to park and suggested menu items to try. If you like to stay at your resort and dine at the typical touristy restaurants in Lahaina and Kihei, you wont find this book very useful. But if you are like us and like to explore "out of the way" Maui when you go and are looking to spend less than $20 (or less than $10) per person on a meal, this book will be indespensible during your driving tours around the island. You can save money and eat at the less expensive breakfast and lunch spots listed in this book, and then splurge a night or two on dinner at Mama's Fish House, Roy's/Kimo's/Lahaina Fish Co., and a luau or dinner show. We ate at at least 5 places recommended by this book while we were there, from oceanfront restaurants to tiny taco stands on the Hana Hwy. By the way, we've used Maui Revealed for years (who doesn't these days?), and 50 Thrifty lists a lot of restaurants that Maui Revealed doesn't. So spend the few bucks for this book and have an even bigger selection of restaurants to choose from when you get there!

Editorial Review:

50 Thrifty Maui Restaurants is a unique guidebook to great food at bargain prices, from oceanfront cafes in Lahaina to ethnic eateries in Kula to roadside stands along the Hana Highway. Categorized by mealtime and geographical area, it's a first-ever pocket directory to dining the way the locals do: burgers to burritos, ahi to mahimahi, crab wonton to kalua pig. Long-time Maui residents Yvonne Biegel and Jessica Ferracane surveyed other savvy Maui diners and taste-tested all 50 eateries in compiling this handy, candid guide — complete with maps. photographs and detailed listings on hours, parking, seating, credit cards and recommended dishes. Foreword by Maui News dining editor Carla Tracy.

Hana Highway Mile by Mile a winner! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Maui's Hana Highway is one of the best drives in the United States. It deserves a great tour book, and Derrick's Hana Highway Mile By Mile is the one to take along.

The book delivers just what it promises: A comprehensive guide of the sights along the route, mile by mile. The book's organization makes it simple to find out about the next point of interest ahead as you are driving. The book lists ratings for each of the stops. I found that for the most part I agree with the book's ratings of the attractions.

The information in the book can be found elsewhere. For example the great book, Maui Revealed, covers much of the same information. The book Hana Highway Mile By Mile shines is in its organization and clarity. For example when you see mile marker 32 you can quickly find that 5 star rated Wai'anapanapa State Wayside Park is just ahead. The guide tells you where within this Wayside Park to find the black sand beach, the lava tubes, the sea arches, and the blow hole. Everything you need is at your fingertips.

The book is small--only 66 pages. All pictures are in color. The maps are nice, but I think Maui Revealed's maps are better.

The only complaint I have is minor and shared by the other Maui guide books: They use the Hawaiian words makai (ocean side of road) and mauka (mountain side of road) throughout. Every time I read these terms I have to look up what they mean.

This book helped to make my July 2007 journey down the Hana Highway both memorable and enjoyable!

Editorial Review:

A fully illustrated mile by mile guidebook that introduces and guides visitors along the highlight of Maui, the Hana Highway. From lush rainforests and waterfalls to prairie grasslands and rocky lava coasts, this is one journey Maui visitors simply do not want to miss. This guidebook features all major sights along the Hana Highway. From the very start of the Hana Highway in Pa'ia Town to Hana town itself and then beyond to Upcountry Maui - stop by stop and mile by mile. This guide shows you the most popular must see & do plus a few of the more hidden gems along this majestic journey as well. Detailed mile by mile maps are included.

Great travel book for visiting Maui 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have been Maui island four times in the past. Got this book with couriosity to see if I have missed any good spot yet. Wow....I am really pleased by both the information quality and information quantity from this travel book.

Pro:
1. The book has the right compact size to be carried around during travel.

2. It is printed with premium paper that makes those color photos, pictures,
drawings in this book vivid and clear.
I hate to read travel book with black-and-white photos only.

3. It really covers all the spots (beaches, entertainment, things to avoid,
places to stay, restaurants, shopping, activities and sights...) on that
island.

4. It has sufficient descriptions of each spot. But not too much details.
That's a good trade-off. I don't want to carry a thick heavy book during
traveling.

5. The driving direction is fairly clear...with road map in the book too.

Con:
1. It would be great, if they can trim down some words to make it more
thinner. But this is a tough call. Some people may want more
descriptions for each spot.

In summary, this is really a must-to-have handy book for people plan to
visit Maui. For sure I will bring it alone with me in next trip......and
I will recommend this book to my friend also.
