Indispenisble 5 out of 5 stars.

This thing saved my butt last year.
I took a trip to Boston, and drove from Boston to Inverness, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island.
I went the scenic route, cutting through Maine to Calais / St Stephen, where I crossed the border into New Brunswick.
I had an atlas, I had maps, I had been studying maps of the entire Eastern seaboard for months and months. This was a solo journey so I wanted to be prepared. I decided to get the Lonely Planet guide on a whim. I figured I couldn't have too much information!
The thing about the Maritime Provinces that outsiders don't know, is that it's nearly impossible to get any good information on them from the conventional sources (internet, etc). Enter Lonely Planet guides.
The biggest way this book helped me was when I was in Saint John, NB which is where I stayed overnight between Boston and Cape Breton.
First of all, Saint John was surprisingly cute. I wish I would have had more time there. Secondly and more importantly, on the way through to CB, I stayed at a slightly crappy motel just outside of town which while not terrible, was not fantastic and I didn't feel entirely safe (just paranoia I think, but still...) That motel was NOT listed in the book, FYI. So on the way back, I decided to look elsewhere - in my book! Lo and behold, I find in the book the contact info for the summer dorm rental program at the University. Why yes, I'll gladly shell out $20 for a safe, clean room! I just needed a place to sleep after all, and it was perfect.
The book also gave me some great info on tiny little St Stephen, where I had a few minutes to stop before crossing the border, and I hit a chocolate shop recommended in the book. Divine. Wouldn't have had a clue without my guide book.
I'm quite sure my journey would have been entirely different, and less enjoyable without this thing.
Lonely Planet books are priceless. Get one.

Not a bad guide 4 out of 5 stars.

If you're looking for a nitty gritty guide to Montreal, this will probably do. I'd recommend purchasing the Fodors Montreal and Quebec City 2008 in place of this guide. It is much more readable, has interesting tidbits on area history and includes a better layout.

Frommers is terrific! 5 out of 5 stars.

We started using Frommer's guides over 20 years ago and continue to be extremely pleased with them! We like to research places we go before we leave home and these guides make that job so much easier! They have always proven very valuable and well worth their cost. This Frommer's guide on Montreal and Quebec is as terrific as I expected it to be.

Great book to include in all your retro vacation planning 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have used the reviews while on several different trips, to Las Vegas, San Diego, and in Southern California. A lot of this info could not be found elsewhere!

A word of advice to lucky purchasers of this book however--do double check, call ahead, and make sure your destination still exists! I have made several blunders as well assuming that a place was open for lunch when many are nightspots only.

That said, a great guide (and check out the inside of the Hanalei/Red Lion Hotel in San Diego--the bartenders make a mean scorpion in a nifty souvenier bowl!!)

Editorial Review:

This completely updated and expanded guide to tiki culture in North America and abroad lists, describes, and reviews every known tiki bar, Polynesian restaurant, and other site of interest to fans of “Polynesian Pop.” From tiki godfathers such as Edgar Leeteg and Don the Beachcomber to contemporary tiki artists like Shag and Bosko, this resource covers all things tiki in prose that is witty, entertaining, and essential for anyone who has ever stepped up to a bar, glanced up at the pufferfish hanging from the ceiling, and ordered a Singapore Sling. An expanded offering of recipes for classic cocktails, a larger glossary of tiki terms, and more resources for buying tiki goods and artifacts are included in this revised edition. Reminiscences of famous points of interest that have closed are provided for the completist, for historical perspective, and for those seeking information on the current status of a favorite tiki site.

Good, But The Other Maps Are Better 4 out of 5 stars.
37 of 42 people found this review helpful.

This map is a good map for those people (like me) who are addicted to Pratchett. Like the others, it helps so much with the visualisation of the places of the book (hubwise, rimwise - it all gets blurred after awhile). However, the map's only negative aspect was that it was a very large map with only a bit of detail here and there - Everything looked a bit spaced out.

Editorial Review:

Between Uberwald and Whale Bay, the Octarine Grass Country and the Widdershins Ocean, lies the most exciting and dangerous terrain in all Discworld. This is a map of Lancre, where Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick live.

Good on Vancouver, slim on Victoria 4 out of 5 stars.

Great book for the highlights of Vancouver, but don't buy it thinking it will have much about Victoria or Vancouver Island. Get the Frommer's book on Vancouver Island for that. Happy whale watching!

Vancouver guide 5 out of 5 stars.

This Top Ten collection is really good for summarizing everything you need to know about a place, and if you do not stay too long it is not worth buying the bigger more detailed more expensive guide!!!
Definetely worth the money...Took more than a week to arrive though.

Vancouver for the tourist.... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"Top Ten Vancouver" is in the familiar and very useful DK format, with lots of useful information in a compact format for the tourist. In just over 120 pages, "Top Ten" covers the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver, such as Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and a variety of museums and other parks. The guide includes pictures, details about each attraction, and maps showing how to get there.

As noted, the focus is on the most popular destinations. The guide includes useful information on reaching the city and where to stay, eat, and shop. The information addresses cautions on crime and traffic. The traveler seeking more choices and details on accomodations should consult some of the most expansive guides such as Fedor's, Frommer's, or Lonely Planet. The compact size of this DK guide makes it perfect for roaming Vancouver. A limited amount of information is provided on the City of Victoria, on Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia and reachable by ferry.

This guide is highly recommended for the traveler planning a vacation in Vancouver.

Editorial Review:

Useful map 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Just came back from a 2500 mile car safari around the Maritime Provinces. This map was useful and up to date. Note that the map includes all of Prince Edward Island and much of New Brunswick as well as Nova Scotia which makes it extremely handy.

Handy map 4 out of 5 stars.

Came in very handy on a recent trip to Nova Scotia. Was detailed enough for the country side. Cities required a more detailed city map (obtained locally from tourist information centers).

Editorial Review:

"Erickson, a rugged individualist if ever there was one, knows his stuff. Erickson misses little, describing the natural wonders of the region, the people who dwell at the remote outposts where gasoline costs nearly as much as good cognac, and the adventures of the first explorers to the great White North, including trappers, Jesuits and prospectors for gold."
--Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

"A blend of stunning landscapes, wildlife, myths, and experience, True North reveals Erickson's love of nature and his passion for truth."
--The Humanist

Leaving behind the comforts of civilized life and armed with only a few essentials, dentist-turned-bush pilot GEORGE ERICKSON captures the exhilarating thrill of roughing it in the wild, flying his Piper Cub Special seaplane into the far reaches of the north. Nearly losing his life--twice--Erickson sets up camp on unexplored lakes and rivers, fishes for trout, struggles with bad weather, dodges forest fires, and and mingles with polar bears, killer whales, musk oxen, and caribou.

In the spirit of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Charles Lindbergh, and other great aviators, he is an engaging traveling companion. This is much more than a travelogue, however, as Canada's Reader's Showcase aptly describes: "Erickson applies a rare love to the rough, dangerous, and frankly, really, really far-flung lands of the Canadian sub-Arctic. He proves himself to be an expert and avid pilot, storyteller, philosopher, environmentalist, dreamer, and perhaps most impressively, fashioner of some really cool fishing lures."

Replete with personal detail, scientific observation, and historical facts--the most chilling being the story of a group of explorers who starved to death in the very cabin he is visiting--TRUE NORTH is an extraordinary travel narrative that will appeal to flying enthusiasts and armchair travelers alike.
