Good on Vancouver, slim on Victoria 4 out of 5 stars.

Great book for the highlights of Vancouver, but don't buy it thinking it will have much about Victoria or Vancouver Island. Get the Frommer's book on Vancouver Island for that. Happy whale watching!

Vancouver guide 5 out of 5 stars.

This Top Ten collection is really good for summarizing everything you need to know about a place, and if you do not stay too long it is not worth buying the bigger more detailed more expensive guide!!!
Definetely worth the money...Took more than a week to arrive though.

Vancouver for the tourist.... 5 out of 5 stars.

"Top Ten Vancouver" is in the familiar and very useful DK format, with lots of useful information in a compact format for the tourist. In just over 120 pages, "Top Ten" covers the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver, such as Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and a variety of museums and other parks. The guide includes pictures, details about each attraction, and maps showing how to get there.

As noted, the focus is on the most popular destinations. The guide includes useful information on reaching the city and where to stay, eat, and shop. The information addresses cautions on crime and traffic. The traveler seeking more choices and details on accomodations should consult some of the most expansive guides such as Fedor's, Frommer's, or Lonely Planet. The compact size of this DK guide makes it perfect for roaming Vancouver. A limited amount of information is provided on the City of Victoria, on Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia and reachable by ferry.

This guide is highly recommended for the traveler planning a vacation in Vancouver.

very useful and accurate 4 out of 5 stars.

I have the 5th Edition of this book, but, this can only be better I hope.

It is a very personal review of the states and what they have to offer and as opposed to other books that are just boring and incomprehensible listings of attractions and dining and lodging .
I actually went to some of the dining and hidden attraction recommendations from this book and it didn't fail me. All those places were certainly what the book said they would be or maybe more than that.

The only drawback i can see is that there wasnt any mention of good campgrounds that car-campers could easily refer to. But for that, you can look up "the best in tent camping".

Good Luck with your trips. I know mine was a great success.

Editorial Review:

In-depth coverage of the area’s wonderful cities—Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria—plus its many coastal hamlets and mountain getaways
Packed with dozens of “hidden” spots like peaceful Lost Lake, where fishing for rainbow trout is only allowed from rental canoes and non-motorized boats

The ultimate guide for enjoying the Northwest’s great outdoors, with details on over 200 parks, beaches and wilderness areas, including more than 300 hiking trails and over 700 campgrounds

Editorial Review:

Two years out of college and with a degree from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Victoria Riccardi left a boyfriend, a rent-controlled New York City apartment, and a plum job in advertising to move to Kyoto to study kaiseki, the exquisitely refined form of cooking that accompanies the formal Japanese tea ceremony. She arrived in Kyoto, a city she had dreamed about but never seen, with two bags, an open-ended plane ticket, and the ability to speak only sushi-bar Japanese. She left a year later, having learned the language, the art of kaiseki, and what was truly important to her.
Like flower arranging or calligraphy, kaiseki is an age-old Japanese art form. It began as a modest vegetarian meal that Buddhist monks ate in Kyoto’s Zen temples and then developed into a highly symbolic Japanese ritual. Through special introductions and personal favors, Victoria was able to attend one of Kyoto’s most prestigious tea schools, where this art has been preserved for generations and where she was taken under the wing of an American expatriate who became her kaiseki mentor. As a first-hand participant in kaiseki meals and tea ceremonies, she observed the highly choreographed rituals of this extraordinary culinary discipline, absorbing the beauty and subtlety of its myriad details and symbolic gestures.
During her year in Kyoto, Victoria explored the mysterious and rarefied world of tea kaiseki, living a life inaccessible to most foreigners. She befriended a Japanese couple, teaching English at their home-based language school and eventually moving in with them. She spent countless hours with her kaiseki mentor and his partner cooking in their historic Japanese house. Eventually, she even struck up a friendship with a monk when she spent several nights at a secluded Buddhist temple.
She also discovered the beguiling realm of modern-day Japanese food—the restaurants, specialty shops, and supermarkets. She participated in many fast-disappearing culinary customs, including making mochi (chewy rice cakes) by hand, a beloved family ritual barely surviving in a mechanized age. She celebrated the annual cleansing rites of New Year’s, donning an elaborate kimono and obi for a thirty-four-course extravaganza. In her book, she includes twenty-five recipes for favorite dishes she encountered, such as Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl, Japanese Beef and Vegetable Hotpot, and Green-Tea Cooked Salmon Over Rice.
Untangling My Chopsticks is a sumptuous journey into the tastes, traditions, and exotic undercurrents of Japan. It is also a coming-of-age tale steeped in history and ancient customs, a thoughtful meditation on life, love, and learning in another land.

The Hometown Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition will be out soon, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.

I may update my review after my trip, but from my first reading of the guide, I found it to be fairly comprehensive. It covers the city as well as some things to do in the immediately surrounding region. There are sections which cover the culture (`City Life', `Arts',' Food', `History'), the area (`Neighbourhoods'), and most importantly for the traveler, things to do (`Eating', `Drinking', `Sleeping', `Walking Tours', `Entertainment', `Sports, Health, & Fitness', `Shopping', and `Excursions').

I found this guide to be very helpful in my planning, and only found a couple areas where it wasn't accurate. The first was in hotel costs, and that is undoubtedly due to the fact that I am going to be there during a holiday. The guide is also from 2004, so there would undoubtedly be changes each year anyway. The other area where they might want to update is for getting a visa. Tourist visas for many countries can now be applied for online, but they do not mention that. I feel that one of the most useful sections of this book will probably turn out to be the `Directory' section, which covers a wide range of topics from transportation, money exchange, embassies, tipping, tourist information, and much more.

As the city guide for the city in which Lonely Planet is based, my expectations were very high, and so far they have been met for the most part. As I indicated earlier, I may come back and edit this review after my trip, but for pre-planning, these is easily a four star reference. However, I do see that the 6th edition is due out in October of this year, so if possible I would suggest waiting for the more up-to-date version of the guide.

Editorial Review:

Great move. You've just picked up Lonely Planet's hometown guide - and we know world-class Melbourne better than anyone else. We've gladly pulled out our best to cover every inch of abundant cultural turf. Applaud honest, insider reviews and stunning colour by staff photographers (see if you can spot one taken from our rooftop). This is the game we play 24/7.

Very useful, interesting book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was very handy when we went to Melbourne last month. We bought this and a city guide, and found this book to be much more our style. If all the Rough Guides are this handy, then it's a great series. I am certainly going to try one the next time I am going on a trip. (Usually I buy "for Dummies" books, but since we were strictly relegated to Melbourne on this past trip, I didn't want to buy an all-Australia-oriented book!)

Could have used a bit more data on the seedier aspects of the city (because all cities have their dark side, and it's nice to know the etiquette), but overall, it was very useful.

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to Melbourne is the most extensive guidebook available to Australia''s second-largest city. The guide features lively accounts of the sights and discerning reviews of the best bars, hotels and restaurants. Now published as a larger B-format guide, the 16-page introduction includes full-colour photos of the authors selection of ''Things Not to Miss'' and large easy-to-read maps througout.

My favourite guidebook for British Columbia 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I know of no better book to my home province of British Columbia than this Moon guide. On my travels as a semi-retired geologist, I also carry copies of the Lonely Planet and Frommer's book and have reviewed both of them and others at Amazon.com, but Moon Handbooks British Columbia stands alone for its usefulness. The other books have their good points, but this one encapsulates everything one needs to enjoy the wonders of the province, whether it's their first trip or they live here. It covers every single corner of BC and is thorough and up to date.

The Moon guide is cleverly written and arranged to appeal to all budgets. The bulk of the text relates to towns and parks of BC, with informative coverage of everything from museums to fishing opportunities and wildlife viewing. Each section ends with details of the best places to stay and recommendations for dining. If you're camping out or RVing I'd suggest also getting a campground guide, but the Moon book suggests at least one campground in each town, each of which the author has obviously visited. Motels are also detailed, and over previous editions I'm yet to find fault with the author's choices. Ditto for bed and breakfasts and restaurants.

In my opinion, thois is definitely the best allround guidebook for British Columbia

Editorial Review:

British Columbia Handbook provides travelers with the best of the area's sophisticated modern cities and colonial charms as well as its pristine forests and waterways. The authors explore the national parks and lead readers to such delights as the Southern Gulf Islands and the Okanagan wine country.
