an increadible 13er book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book I have seen on Colorado 13ers. It lists at least 2 routes per mountain with a few exeptions. He tells the difficulty of each route and from that I can know if that mountain or route suits me. There are lots of coler pictures of the mountains and topo maps of each mountain showing the route up each peak. The routes are coler coded so you can see what class the routes are. It also gives a unofficial name to many of the unnamed peaks. The back of the book has 3 lists of all mounttains in colorado above 13,000 feet which also includes every point that reaches above 14,000 feet. This book with a 14er guide will tell you how to climb colorado's centenials.

Editorial Review:

Colorado's Thirteeners is a comprehensive hiking and climbing guide to Colorado's peaks between 13,800 feet and 13,999 feet in elevation. Although climbing Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks has become increasingly popular in recent years for both state natives and visitors, many of the best climbs in the state are actually 13,000-foot peaks. Referring to these peaks as the "Centennial Thirteeners," authors Gerry and Jennifer Roach take you across Colorado to some of the most beautiful mountain the state has to offer. Peaks covered include Mount Meeker, which is visible from Denver, and more reclusive beauties such as Arrow, Vestal, and Jagged in the San Juan Range. Packed full of useful and user-friendly information on these and other peaks.

Very Helpful Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm planning my trip to Aconcagua and this book has been very helpful. Love all the helpful photos and diagrams.

Editorial Review:

Of the seven continental summits, Aconcagua (at 6962 m/22,840 ft) lies second only to Everest. Yet it is surprisingly free of snow and ice, and experienced hikers can reach the roof of the Americas without technical expertise. However, it is one of the world's highest and toughest treks. The author has summated twice, and explains in detail how to tackle the main trekking routes (Normal and Polish Traverse), as well as giving a useful summary on the technical Polish Glacier route. This pocket-sized book weighs only 112 g (4 oz), yet it contains all you need to plan and enjoy your summit attempt: concise advice from an expert about preparation, planning and choosing your gear detailed information about altitude effects and sickness, and how to monitor and prevent them fold-out map showing the routes, also enlargement of summit area 96 waterproof pages with open-flat binding in full colour, with 60 photographs.

A true masterpiece of clasic climbing. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Lionel Terray was one of the great clasic climbers and this book captures the spirit of those days. The accounts of the climbs are very richly told, they are not technical descriptions but beautiful stories told by a man who devoted his existence to the mountains. Anyone interested in the sport of climbing can benefit from this book, not from the technical side but from the spiritual side and the historical value of the many first ascents by Terray.

Editorial Review:

Frenchman Lionel Terray is one of mountaineering history's great adventurers, and his autobiography, Conquistadors of the Useless, stands among the "100 Greatest Adventure Books of All Time", according to National Geographic Adventure magazine. Following World War II, when France desperately needed successes to heal its wounds, Terray emerged as a national hero, conquering summits atop the planet's highest mountains.

Could use more basics and less fluff 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was really hoping that this book would go into more detail about the meteorology that underlies mountain weather, but it doesn't do much of that. It's explanations of the interrelations between low pressure systems, fronts, troughs, ridges, the jet stream etc. is so thin that I found myself turning to the internet to try to figure out most of this.
Instead the book glosses over the meteorology to spend time on providing basic weather safety tips. Much of this is boilerplate copied from section to section as the first aid and tips on cover etc. don't really change from section to section. It also spends pages every chapter presenting accounts of accidents and mistakes related to weather.
Perhaps it's just my preference but I'd find the book more useful if it presented more meteorology and less extras, at least enough so that the reader could understand a weather chart in terms of what it means for the mountains. It would only take another two or three pages here or there, and the author is certainly capable of it as a broadcast meteorologist.

Editorial Review:

For anyone venturing into the mountains: Does the weather say "go" or "stay home"? A meteorologist (and outdoorsman) guides your decision. Working as a broadcast meteorologist, Jeff Renner hears all too frequent reports about weather-related hiking, climbing, and skiing accidents. He'll teach you how to avoid becoming a statistic: all it takes is a little basic weather knowledge, pre-trip planning, and vigilance on the mountain. Renner discusses reading clouds, wind patterns, snow conditions, and other clues both pre-trip and on the mountain. If you do get caught under stormy skies, he'll teach you how to limit your exposure. The book is filled with tip lists and conceret examples. Renner also includes chapters on weather patterns region by region across the U.S., highlighted by reference maps.

SWEEEET! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Just got my copy and after spending a couple hours with this guide, all I can say is Wow! Kinda thick, but so much info and really liked the history section. Can't wait to visit some of the new spots...

Only question, when are the other volumes coming out?

nice to have new material on an place that has a lifetime of climbing 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Got this book this month (December) and have already began picking out new routes I want to do! I definitely am an advocate of his (Randy Vogel's) seeming conviction that his original JTree book needed some updating. This guide gives new route info, as well as more developed topo's, pictures, etc. I will likely get his new book when it comes out in print this January, simply because I am already impressed with this one and his next one will cover the Central (Split Rock, Saddle Rock, etc.) more extensively than his original 1 book volume did.

Can't Wait for Vols. 2 & 3. 5 out of 5 stars.

I went to J-Tree for the first time last week. I bought this book at Nomad Adventures in Joshua Tree. Because it's one of three volumes, more detail is given for the routes. There are just too damn many routes in J-tree to try to pack them into one book. This book is a must. I am looking forward to the next two books - and my next trip back.

It's Back! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe climbing guide got republished the same month I moved out of the area. The CU Hiking club almost had to chain down their copy so it didn't get lifted.

Great climbing beta. I never would have tried to climb Skywalker with so much snowpack had the guide been availble at the time.

That's it! I'm moving back.

Typical Roach - Excellent guide to the indian peaks 5 out of 5 stars.

As you might expect with a Gerry Roach guide, this one is very good. For those that aren't familiar with Gerry's work, then wait no longer and buy the book. You'll see why...

This one is on par with his excellent 14ers guidebook. I suppose if I had no nitpick (its why we write reviews I guess?) then I'd wish for color photos instead of b & w. Oh and yes my one complaint with Gerry's stuff is that there really isn't any off-season climbing info. However, since many, heck if not most, people do their climbing in the summer it won't be an issue. All in all an excellent guide that is especially strong in its route descriptions, approach details, and climbing information. Also Gerry's classic rating (basically his stamp of an outstanding climb) is included as with the 14ers guide. Don't go climbing in the Indian Peaks without this in your pack.

Editorial Review:

Located just south of Rocky Mountain National Park, this popular region is one of the most accessible hiking and climbing areas in the West. In this concise and fully up-to-date guidebook, Gerry Roach shares his firsthand knowledge and experience, offering readers a chance to explore some of Colorado's finest mountain trails. Get a grip on ADA, pocket size. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Are you tired of tracking down the office copy of the ADA standards? Is the only copy within the workstation of King Tornado? Get your hands on this little number. Keep it by you at all times. I have used this reference guide for two years now and it has saved me a lot of time. This is a very easy to use condensed version of the state issued ADA guide. It is accurate and reliable and it does not have to go back to the office library. And don't let the words "pocket guide" scare you off, this is not a brochure, it is a book. It's just smaller and smarter, not to mention lighter than the stardard issue. So get a grip on ADA, pocket size.

Editorial Review:

What makes a good explorer? Adaptability, ambition, stamina, self-belief, doggedness, curiosity, optimism, authority, hardiness -- and fund-raising ability.

A powerful punch of self-help, how-to, popular history, and humor. In this celebration of the glory days of exploration, Mick Conefrey takes a new look at the larger-than-life tales of many famous American and European adventurers. He pulls practical advice from their original diaries and logs stories of endurance and survival, such as Thor Heyerdahl's crossing of the Pacific in a raft and Robert Peary's heroic North Pole adventure. All expeditions are essentially projects that have to be managed. Teams have to be selected, equipped, and motivated. Goals have to be set and crises have to be overcome. For example -- some believed that it was always important to include in an expedition someone whom everyone else disliked because it would give focus to their complaints and help them bond. The book is chuck full of useful information, such as what to do if you are attacked by an anaconda--you wait until it is has swallowed you up to your knees and then you reach down and cut its head off. The instructions are very clear about not panicking in this situation.

In addition to the wonderful characters and stories you will find many lessons on how to be an explorer and what it takes to set sail without a clear path home.

Awesome book 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

The American Alpine Institute recommended this book to me after I took their basic mountaineering course. I've read it several times now. It explains important topics like escaping from a belay, pulley systems, lowering methods, rappelling with an injuryed partner and self-belayed solo climbing. The illustrations are excellent.

If you climb you should read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The book covers all aspects of rescue of a fallen climber, from freeing oneself from a harness to ascending or decending the rope to finally hooking up and hauling the victim to safety. I've read numerous books on climbing and if your looking for a book on self rescue, this is the one!

An excellent reference for multlipitch climbers 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is for the experienced climber who understands the importance of self rescue skills for multipitch trad climbing.
It does not take the place of a professionally-led self-rescue course! If you try to learn the techniques on your own with this book you will be frustrated. This is the reference for after you take such a course.
While it is shows many scenarios, it can be confusing with so many variations. They should have concentrated on the principles so the climbers could think their way out of a specific situation using the basic scenarios.

Editorial Review:

Fully describes and illustrates a variety of techniques that every climber should know for safety and self-reliance.

Editorial Review:

Published for the first time in English, The Mountains of My Life collects the classic writings of world-famous mountaineer Walter Bonatti, and tells the real story of the 1954 controversy over the events on K2 that changed his life.

Bonatti is one of the greatest mountaineers of all time, a man who continually reset the benchmark of human possibility by ascending routes that others dared not even contemplate. He climbed with an audacity and panache that epitomized the purest spirit of alpinism, and inspired an entire generation of climbers. Jon Krakauer calls him one of my heroes. He is not only a mountaineer of astonishing talent and vision, but one of the world's most engaging writers about mountaineering.

Bonatti has also been dogged by controversy and often been at odds with the climbing community. The Mountains of My Life not only collects the best of Bonatti's writing telling of adventures in the Alps, the Himalayas, and little-known South American peaks it also tells Bonatti's version of what really happened on the Italian expedition that made the first ascent of K2 in 1954. Bonatti's selfless actions helped avert disaster, yet in the expedition's aftermath he found himself cast as a scapegoat. Part detective story, part hair-raising adventure, part meditation on his craft, The Mountains of My Life is as awe-inspiring and controversial as its author, and is beautifully illustrated with Bonatti's own photos.
