Editorial Review:

From the Lead Climbing Ranger for Mount Rainier National Park-all the information you need to get to the summit and back, safely.

*41 principal routes and their variations, with aerial photos and route overlays *Extensive material on Rainier's unique weather, terrain, high altitude and glacier training opportunities, and more *New sidebars on mountain history, Rainier personalities, and dramatic rescues

One of Mike Gauthier's primary duties as Lead Climbing Ranger for Mount Rainier National Park is advising climbing parties about what to expect on the mountain. Name any route on Rainier, and he can describe its rewards and specific challenges (he's summited Rainier more than 170 times during all seasons and under intense conditions). Whether you choose the classic Liberty Ridge route, the drama of Success Cleaver, or the rarely attempted Mowich Face, Gauthier provides all the details you'll need for a successful and enjoyable climb.

This new edition presents the latest information on logistics, regulations, and permits. It includes expanded material on understanding and surmounting Rainier's famed glaciers; tips on selecting a guide service; excellent mountaineering training sites around Rainier for those bound for the world's highest peaks; and bonus routes on adjacent Little Tahoma, Washington's third highest peak.

Colorado's Fourteeners 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have climbed two of the Fourteeners listed in this book and I wish I had this book before doing so. The book is simply, in my opinion, the best, most complete guide to climbing these mountains that I could possibly imagine. I'm doing four more this month and I've used this book to do all the planning, including which TOPOs to buy and which trailheads to use and which routes up the mountains to take. He provides excellent maps in the book itself and great descriptions of each ascent. He also carefully describes the different levels of difficulty a climber/hiker will encounter and applies those definitions systematically throughout his book. It's a first rate guide and worth every penny paid.

Editorial Review:

An accurate, complete guide to climbing the 55 peaks over 14,000 feet in Colorado--covering routes for all levels. Each route's difficulty is rated according to the Yosemite Decimal System. Includes round-trip mileage and elevation gain. Roach has climbed every peak in this guide. Photographs and maps.

good book, well thought out 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I agree with the reviewers above (below) that this book complements "Freedom of the Hills". In particular it focuses more on the decision making process than most books of these types. Although I've never traveled with either of the authors, they seem like lovely people and the stories they tell flesh them out for the reader. They also answered a question I had when I wrote them via email. In all, a solid book that it would do to put on your bookshelf.

Editorial Review:

This intermediate-level guide addresses tools, skills, and techniques used in alpine terrain including rock, snow, ice, and glaciers at moderate altitude--approximately 5000 meters and lower. The technical protection systems are covered, of course. But 30 years of alpine climbing experience has convinced the authors that mastery--and safety--lie in the far more difficult task of knowing exactly which techniques to use, where and when. Therefore, they teach step-by-step decision making skills, providing scenarios, checklists, and self-posed questions to inform the decision process. Alpine Climbing assumes some prior knowledge, primarily in rock climbing skills and techniques. Basic knots, belaying, rappelling, building rock anchors, leading, placing rock protection, and movement skills on rock: variations of these skills that are of particular value in the alpine environment are addressed in this book.

Outstanding educational resource 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is the fifth report in this series I've read. It is the best resource for finding out what really hurts, cripples and kills people involved in mountaineering. You may read "On Rope", John Long, Craig Leubben, Craig Connelly, "Freedom of the Hills", etc., to find out what to do correctly, but the ANAM books will provide a strong sense of what can go wrong, when and where procedures should become your friend, and you'll read real case studies of how to avoid problematic issues when in the wilderness or mountainous terrain. Regarding practical mountaineering and climbing, I've learned at least as much from ANAM as I have from any other five titles. I believe it should be required reading for anyone transitioning from gym climbing to real rock. Or for those who seek the freedom of the hills.

Editorial Review:

This annual investigative handbook offers detailed reports of more than 60 climbing accidents that occurred in 1997. Analyses of what went wrong in each situation give experienced and beginning mountaineers the opportunity to learn from other climbers' mistakes. From inadequate protection, clothing, or equipment to inexperience, poor judgment, or simple ignorance, the errors recorded in this book are invaluable safety lessons for all climbers.

the very best in its class 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 20 people found this review helpful.

you can feel certain that when you buy this book, you are getting the best that exists for beginning and intermediate navigation and orienteering. all of the basics are outlined here, and written in such a way that is quite easy to follow. the practice problems in the back were especially helpful to me.

one word of extreme caution: be absolutely sure to stay away from the sierra club navigation book. it is difficult to describe its worthlessness, as it is poorly organized and written, and implicity resigns navigation to an elite few.

Editorial Review:

·GPS chapter completely updated to reflect newer models and features of GPS receivers now available
·Expanded to include a section on routefinding on glaciers, along with additional information on changing declination
·Extensive illustrated examples of orientation and navigation

Proceed with confidence when heading off-road or off-trail with the second edition of Wilderness Navigation. Whether you are climbing a glacier, orienteering in the backcountry, or on an easy day hike, Mike and Bob Burns cover all the latest technology and time-tested methods to help you learn to navigate-from how to read a map to compasses and geomagnetism.

A different outlook on Mountain Climbing!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this book, and despite it not being as descriptive as other Mountaineering books. If you take this as a story of two men who have little climbing experience achieve a goal of climbing the highest Mountains in each Continent, 7 summits in total. I found it an amazing book of self determination, motivation and true friendship.
Yes it is true, they couldn't have otherwise succeeded at this unless they had the money to do so, but the book never denies the reader that insight.
This booked had me routing for them from their first Everest adventure, I just wanted them to achieve their goals.
For those who are wanting a descriptive mountain climbing book this isn't for you, but those who want to read about a great challenging adventure over coming multiple diffculties this is an excellant read.

Editorial Review:

A thrilling and inspirational odyssey of two men's climb to the top of the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. "A great adventure story, filled with heroics, tragedy, humor and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit."--Tom Brokaw. 32-page insert.

Superb info on knots and ropes! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book on knots for climbers available! It's also great for hikers and boaters. There is a lot of information on rope materials and construction (not just climbing ropes but all that are used outdoors). It also has a useful chapter on rope handling, from coiling to tossing, to help prevent tangles. And the selection of knots is large but not overwhelming, with helpful tips on why (or why not) to use a particular knot. Good photos and detailed written instructions make it easy to learn the knots (some knot books are rather confusing). This should be required reading!

Editorial Review:

A guide to the ropes and knots used in the outdoors by hikers, campers, paddlers, and climbers.

*Guidelines for selecting the best rope and the best knot for the activity at hand
*Knot-tying directions clearly illustrated with photos
*New entry in the Mountaineers Outdoor Basics series

It's fair to say that climber Clyde Soles is obsessed with ropes and knots and their absolute performance--since he regularly entrusts his life to ropes on sheer rock faces. His unique book explains how to select and use ropes, cordage, and webbing for the outdoors. Invaluable information is provided on rope handling techniques (how to avoid dreaded tangles) and the best methods for rope care and maintenance. Step-by-step directions for tying over 40 knots are clearly illustrated with photographs. Other useful features include a glossary and a knot comparison chart activity.

This is the definitive text on ropes and knots for anyone who plays in the outdoors!

AVERAGE REFERENCE 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I don't know why Don Holmes did so well in trail descriptions and then installed such poorly illustrated maps. Many look hand-drawn. He has cleverly added though interesting info including special conditions, historical and natural history notes to each area. I give this book a "c".

This book has taken me places..... literally. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've climbed 22 highpoints and had this book with me every step of the way. The information provided is invaluable, though I would agree that the maps aren't the best. I love this book , but I must say I have recently purchased "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints", and find myself using that book more often for my recent Highpointing endeavors. I would not want to go on any highpointing adventure without both of the actually. I own 4 Highpointing books and find useful information in all of them. If you want to seriously take up Highpointing, I recommend owning at least two Highpointing books since they all have excellent information and some are better written for certain highpoints than others are. Especially since most Highpoints are quite a ways off the beaten trail (so to speak). If I had to pick just two, it would be defintely "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints" by Diane and Charlie Winger, and either this one ("Highpoints Of The United States" by Don Holmes)or "Fifty State Summits" by Paul Zumwalt. I personally own all three. For you thrifty people out there, I noticed you can by this one and "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints" by Diane and Charlie Winger together at a discounted price right here on Amazon.

Humanity at Its Best and Worst 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

To put my review in context, I have climbed Half Dome several times, and was a former member of National Ski Patrol, trained and experienced in search and rescue. I have a friend who was killed by lightning in Arizona and was almost struck myself in my back yard, 20 minutes after a storm had ended and the sky had turned clear blue. I am a confirmed hiker and back packer and have back packed in Yosemite and the High Sierra many times. I found this book deeply troubling and at the same time very rewarding. This recounts the story of what happened when foolhardy young people ignored the warnings of the lethal reality of lightning as they approach Half Dome so that they can "dance in the lightning" to prove their manhood. Two are killed and others are severely injured by being struck multiple times by lightning. I was horrified by their wanton disregard not only for their personal safety but also for their disgusting disregard for others. Their actions were offensive in the extreme. Contrast this with the actions of the rescuers! Despite being offended by the vulgar and crude actions of those who were struck by lightning on Half Dome, they recognized the value of human life, no matter how offensive the victims were, and exercise heroic efforts, at immense self sacrifice, to save their lives. I take my hat off to all involved in the rescue but particularly to Linda Crozier for her efforts to save the injured. She stands out as a stunning example of not only the best humanity has to offer but also did a superb job triaging and treating the injured under the most trying circumstances. Linda, God bless you! Thanks also to the pilots of the helicopter who risked landing on top of Half Dome several times as darkness fell to evacuate the injured! What heroes! Anyone reading this book will have a much better understanding of the dangers of lightning and of the inherent risks and difficulties involved in moutain rescues! This book has a lot to teach and will affect almost every reader for the rest of their lives!

Editorial Review:

The compelling account of recklessness, tragedy, courage and rescue, a book whose sobering depiction of Nature's danger is tempered by unforgettable portraits of the triumphant human spirit.

Editorial Review:

Himalayan Quest offers an unforgettable glimpse into the remarkable world of Ed Viesturs, America’s best-known high altitude climber, and the breathtaking landscape in which he works. It is an unparalleled showcase of both the heartbreaking tragedy and the ineffable joy Viesturs has experienced while striving at the limits of human endurance. Written with Peter Potterfield, an award-winning mountaineering journalist, Viesturs narrates his quest to climb the 14 highest mountains in the world—those peaks above 8,000 meters in height. To date, Viesturs has succeeded in summiting 12 of the peaks, including five separate ascents of Mount Everest. For these ascents he has been profiled in Outside and Sports Illustrated, People, Newsweek, the New York Times Sunday Magazine, and has appeared on NBC’s Today. As a spokesman for Microsoft, he is often positioned at the top of the company?s Web site.

At the center of this extraordinary account of his mountaineering adventures are Viesturs’s own awe-inspiring photographs from the top of the world. This collection of images will show readers, like never before, the deadly beauty and haunting menace of the Himalaya. A unique, inspiring, and spine-tingling glimpse into the rarified world of the extreme climber, Himalayan Quest will appeal not only to Viesturs?s significant fan base (fondly known as Edophiles or Edheads), but to outdoor aficionados and armchair adventurers everywhere.
