Editorial Review:

"A vivid and compelling book." (Time magazine)

Erik Weihenmayer was born with retinoscheses, a degenerative eye disorder that would leave him blind by the age of thirteen. But Erik was determined to rise above this devastating disability and lead a fulfilling and exciting life.

In this poignant and inspiring memoir, he shares his struggle to push past the limits imposed on him by his visual impairment-and by a seeing world. He speaks movingly of the role his family played in his battle to break through the barriers of blindness: the mother who prayed for the miracle that would restore her son's sight and the father who encouraged him to strive for that distant mountaintop. And he tells the story of his dream to climb the world's Seven Summits, and how he is turning that dream into astonishing reality (something fewer than a hundred mountaineers have done).

From the snow-capped summit of McKinley to the towering peaks of Aconcagua and Kilimanjaro to the ultimate challenge, Mount Everest, this is a story about daring to dream in the face of impossible odds. It is about finding the courage to reach for that ultimate summit, and transforming your life into something truly miraculous.

"I admire you immensely. You are an inspiration to other blind people and plenty of folks who can see just fine." (Jon Krakauer, author of Into Thin Air)

Editorial Review:

Few places in the United States confound and fascinate Americans like Appalachia, yet no other area has been so markedly mischaracterized by the mass media. Stereotypes of hillbillies and rednecks repeatedly appear in representations of the region, but few, if any, of its many heroes, visionaries, or innovators are ever referenced.

Make no mistake, they are legion: from Anne Royall, America's first female muckraker, to Sequoyah, a Cherokee mountaineer who invented the first syllabary in modern times, and international divas Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, as well as writers Cormac McCarthy, Edward Abbey, and Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck, Appalachia has contributed mightily to American culture — and politics. Not only did eastern Tennessee boast the country's first antislavery newspaper, Appalachians also established the first District of Washington as a bold counterpoint to British rule. With humor, intelligence, and clarity, Jeff Biggers reminds us how Appalachians have defined and shaped the United States we know today.

The only conditioning book a rock climber needs Rock climbing is one of the most physically challenging sports, testing strength, endurance, flexibility, and stamina. Good climbers have to build and maintain each of these assets. This is the first-ever book to provide climbers of all ages and experience with the knowledge and tools to design and follow a comprehensive, personalized exercise program. Part One covers the basics of physical conditioning and goal-setting. Part Two takes readers through warm-up and flexibility routines, entry-level strength training, weight loss tips, and fifteen core-conditioning exercises. Part Three details climbing-specific conditioning, with twenty exercises to target specific muscles of the fingers, arms and upper torso to develop power and endurance. Editorial Review:

The first of a new series that updates our popular family guides, combining new material and features, in a handy user-friendly format. • Nearly 200 hikes suitable for families with children, seniors, and anyone looking for an easy, yet rewarding adventure •Graphic, two-color layout provides key data at a glance •Includes environmental closeups on the trail to engage kids in the natural world Joan Burton has always selected hikes for maximum kid appeal. It’s not only that many are short—starting from just half a mile—with "turnarounds" clearly identified (turnarounds are places where tired families can cut their hikes short yet still have a satisfying outing), but Burton tells where your kids can hop around in the spray of a waterfall, find out about bat caves, talk with a fire watcher and examine the Osborne fire finder, or peer into a dark, abandoned railroad tunnel and listen to the hollow sounding echoes down its length.

This book combines Best Hikes with Children in Western Washington, Volumes 1 and 2, with loads of new material and an easy-to-use new format that is smaller for greater portability. Hike write-ups have been graphically designed to highlight essential data at a glance, not only by use of the "About the Hike" and "Before You Go" information blocks but also by extensive use of icons in the margins to note type of hike (day hike or backpack trip), difficulty for children, hikeable seasons, and more.

Seattle resident JOAN BURTON was herself introduced to hiking as a child, and she has been involved in introducing not only her own children to the joys of outdooring, but also members of the Girl Scout and Cub Scout groups of which she was the leader.

"The definitive guide for hiking parents who want to take their children along."

Just what I was looking for... 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I've been climbing for a few years and I wanted to begin a more serious, structured training program to help me break through to the higher grades. Training For Climbing is the book I was looking for, given its scientific look at improving technique, strength and the mind. While such a detailed, measured approach to training may not be for everyone, it has great appeal to me as a longtime athlete who engaged in formal training for other sports. Training For Climbing helped me understand the many unique aspects to, well, training for climbing, which I found to be much different than what I had been used to from my previous sports experience. Furthermore, I enjoyed seeing the many research references and footnotes, and more importantly I was pleased by the overall LACK of "do as so-and-so hot-shot climber does" or "train like I train." Training For Climbing helped me diagnose and design the best training program for me, and I sense that the book will remain a key resource for me for many years to come.

Editorial Review:

This is the completely revised and updated edition of Flash Training, the fundamental manual for physical and mental training for rock climbers. Drawing on new research in sports medicine, nutrition, and fitness, the author has created a training program to help any climber achieve superior performance and better mental concentration on the rock, with less risk of injury. A necessary book for rock climbers everywhere.

Not worth your time 1 out of 5 stars.

I've often thought about writing a book about a trip as a way to deduct the expense from my taxes, but I've refrained for fear that the result would end up like this book. Poorly written with very limited content, this book is of little interest and very limited use to anyone actually planning to climb Kilimanjaro. It's chief value is as personal account of the authors' climb, but you can find many similar accounts for free on personal websites everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever considered climbing to the top of Africa? Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point on the continent of Africa at 19,340 feet. But unlike most of the world's highest mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed by the "average" person. If you want to learn more about cliimbing Mount Kilimanjaro, then this is the book for you! Carmichael and Stoddard describe the process of planning, preparation, and execution of their Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. Their expertise in the biological sciences gives credence to their recommendations for physical training and their precautions taken to prevent altitude sickness. The book is intended to be a step-by-step guide for training, making arrangements, gearing up, and preparing for potential medical problems, time differences and language barriers. They offer hiking guidelines, mental strategies, and even photography techniques. Their diary of the six-day climb gives a vivid description of how they made it up the mountain and back down.

Average. It could have been excellent. 3 out of 5 stars.

There is a lot of detail in this book. I cannot strongly recommend it though because there isn't that much that is unique. It isn't bad. It just isn't great. In part, the author suffers from being knowledgeable of the past but not the present gear, clothing, or technology. The author researched enough to find out about what is now available, but it often appears as though he has only read about it on the Internet or in product literature. A quick example is the utility of a GPS. He mentions his own heavy weight relic and also the lightweight Garmin Geko. He considers a GPS an interesting gadget but he doesn't know how to really take advantage of a GPS combined with topographic mapping software for pre-trip planning and route finding. The old heavyweight relic of a GPS that the author has, gets the most coverage in the text and he simply mentions he might use a GPS more, if he had a Geko.

Editorial Review:

A top-selling recipient of the "Outdoor Writers Guild Award for Excellence," The Backpacker's Handbook owes its success to its enormous practicality for backpackers of all skill levels, covering everything from essential techniques for every backpacking trip--such as map and compass work--to the skills needed for more remote wilderness journeys--such as how to ford rivers safely and how to choose a route through untracked terrain.

Editorial Review:

Since the first successful ascent of Everest 50 years ago, many others have attempted the daunting summit, and many have succeeded. But, though Everest can be climbed, it cannot be conquered. Few know this as well as David Breashears. A filmmaker and veteran climber of the Himalaya, Breashears agreed to lead the May 1996 expedition that would capture Everest in a large-format IMAX© motion picture. Even in the best conditions, Breashears knew, Everest is a dangerous challenge—that May, an unexpected blizzard proved how deadly it could be. Shocking the world, the storm claimed the lives of eight climbers, including two of the world’s top expedition leaders.

Everest is the breathtaking chronicle of a filmmaking expedition turned rescue mission, and of the courage and cooperation of Breashears and his team as they rose to the life or death challenge. A companion to Breashears’s record-grossing large-format film, Everest features an introduction by Outside magazine editor-at-large Tim Cahill, an afterword by David Breashears, and 125 stunning, full-color images, including IMAX frames from the film.

Very Twight 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Long, long ago, I saw Mark give a show in Boulder. It was laced with profanity and although it was entertaining at times, it was also so dependant upon proving that Mark was different, better, more intense and more... Twight, than any of us could ever be, and ultimately, that made the whole seem less than the sum of the parts. Over the years, I've read his articles and have seen more of his talks, all of which were a testament to the Mellowing of Mark. Yes, he has mellowed, but that is not to suggest that he is mellow.

Kiss or Kill has a similar flavor to it, showing the change of Dr. Doom over time and place. I found it extremely funny, extremely sad, extremely entertaining and sometimes extremely overcooked. In short, extremely Twight. It belongs on any committed climber's bookshelf.

Editorial Review:

KISS OR KILL Sit back and join the ride with this collection of edge-of-your-seat climbing stories by MarkTwight aka Dr. Doom. "Somewhere out there somebody understands these words and knows they matter. They were written in blood, learned by heart." --Mark Twight

- BANFF award-winner

Extreme climber. Extreme writer. Extreme personality. No matter what he's doing, Mark Twight takes a definite, and often controversial , stand. Anyone who knows climbing knows Twight's name, and anyone who knows Twight's name will want to read this book. Each story is told in Twight's taut, in-your-face style. Brand-new epilogues bring each piece full circle , providing updated information and fresh, hindsight perspectives.
