Awesome Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

To all of those reviews saying it didn't match up with the Gospel, I would like to point out this is obviously a FICTIONAL novel. Of course we don't know what Jesus was actually thinking, but this book takes a look into what he MAY have thought. I loved it. Very easy to read. I liked the short chapters. I have an infant and love to read, so these chapters were great; I could read a few then easily stop and pick up at the next chapter. I found lots of historical geographic and political references in this book helpful. One bad thing was, if you are not familiar with the Bible and read this, there are many things in here that are not facts, which I re-iterate this is a fictional novel, so read the Bible first! I will be reading more of this author.

Editorial Review:

The most powerful depiction of the death of Christ ever written. See that infamous day not through the eyes, nor the voice of other men, but rather through the eyes and voice of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. He tells you of that day.

There has never been a more stunning, more heart-touching piece of Christian literature to be found in the English language as is The Day I Was Crucified.

Because it is His account of His own death, you will discover little known aspects of Christ’s death. You are also ushered into a presentation of the Lord’s death as seen from the viewpoint of principalities and powers as they gather on Golgatha. You will meet the embodiment of the law, of sin, and the world system…even the personification of Death as he arrives on the scene to claim his victim.

The Day I Was Crucified stands out as literary excellence apart from virtually any books known in the modern era.

Jesus, the Son of Man, A poetic masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet is most beautiful and true, his treatise
on Jesus is poetic and is written as though he interviewed each one of the people who knew and loved the man, as well as though who feared and hated him. The words he quotes are as new and expressive as though they had been said yesterday. Gibran loved Jesus and understood what loves and hates and angers Jesus had to deal with in his short thirty years of miraculous living
on this earth. This is a book to keep and treasure and to renew an appreciation of this Son of Man.

Editorial Review:

Jesus the Son of Man is a striking fictional portrait of Christ as seen through the eyes of his contemporaries. Depicting a variety of famous figures, from Mary Magdalen to Pontius Pilate, Gibran's spellbinding collection of narratives combine historical authority with the supreme eloquence that his admirers hold so dear. In an attractive gift format, this new edition allows Gibran's inspirational account of Christ to be heard once more.

Not so good... 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Although I admit it has been awhile since I read this book, can still say that I found this book singularly unimpressive. He makes many poorly-defended claims and makes quite a few assumptions.

Throughout the book is a very disturbing anti-intellectualism. In more than one place, he refers to the intellect as the "enemy of true Christianity." This is a wild claim that is not only unsupported by Scripture, but runs directly contrary to it. Apparantly, he has never read the passage that commands us to be "transformed by the renewing of your MIND" (Romans 12:2) or the passage where Jesus commands us to love God with all our MIND (Matthew 22:37, etc.).

One of the big problems with the book is that we don't really have all that many specific details on the exact structure of the first-century church service, either from the Bible itself or from church history. Thus this book (and many others on similar topics) must speculate quite a bit in order to fill in gaps in our knowledge. That's a pretty big flaw, given that that's the main point of the book.

I don't think that the author adequately proves that the "open church" model is the only - or even the best or most Biblical way - of running a church. For example, even if we grant that the structure of the 1st century church was exactly as the author describes it, what does that prove? Are the Bible's descriptions here prescriptive or descriptive? How normative is Acts for the church today? How much of the structure of the first-century church was due to necessity rather than superiority? For example, did the early church meet in houses because that's the best way for the church to operate or because the early church was forced to do so by persecution? The author fails to adequately address these issues and many more like them.

Many of the arguments the author gives for this structure are not primarily Biblical but pragmatic, and even then he fails to demonstrate that the structure is actually practical. For example, he claims (without supporting evidence) that people will be more willing to attend a church that uses this structure. In fact, evidence seems to support the contrary position; the fastest-growing churches in America are not "open churches."

I do not particularly recommend this book. It is not very well researched and his arguments are not especially compelling.

I liked this book - what more is there to say? 5 out of 5 stars.

As both an author and reader of fiction, I was impressed with (Women of the Bible). Maybe it is because I have always enjoyed a book that could hold my attention and make me think at the same time. In a nutshell, the characters are believable and yet a little out of the ordinary and the story line interesting. Give this book a try.

Editorial Review:

In Thy Gold to Refine, volume 4 in the series The Work and the Glory, the story of the fictional Steed family enters one of the stormiest and yet most inspiring periods in Church history. Picking up where volume 3 left off in the summer of 1838, this book finds the Steeds, (all but daughter Melissa and her family) happily reunited in Far West, Missouri, only to be thrown into a maelstrom of intense and tragic events: the election-day battle at Gallatin; the siege of DeWitt; the Battle of Crooked River; the issuing of Governor Bogg's extermination order; the Haun's Mill massacre; the fall of Far West; the incarceration of the Prophet Joseph Smith; and the expulsion from Missouri. Characters whom readers have come to know and love from previous volumes return here, including Joshua Steed, who, although reconciled to his family now, finds that his commission in the Missouri state militia forces him to be alighted with those opposing the Mormons. Once again author Gerald Lund skillfully recreates dramatic scenes from Latter-day Saint history, transporting readers back in time to witness soul-stirring events and to meet unforgettable people. Readers of The Work and the Glory may well find that this new volume -- with its powerful account of endurance and faith refined by the fires of affliction &is the most engaging and moving installment in the series so far. 17 disc box-set

Enlightening! 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I searched quite a bit for a bible study for women that would meet the needs of my Catholic faith. I first purchased this book for my own personal use. Each lesson builds on the prior lesson and includes scriptural passages and assigned readings. Each lesson is more thorough than I had thought, but not overwhelming or extraordinarily time consuming. Time is a critical factor for most women, and this seemed to be just right. After joining a Catholic Motherhood Prayer Group, I was approached about putting a Bible Study together...I pulled this book out and submitted it to 23 other women for their review. All of them unanimously voted to go forward with this, and our local priest and spiritual director was impressed with the contents. It was decided that the group would use this book for the Bible Study. It was thorough, complete, accurate, well organized and easily managed.

For Catholic women! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

It's wonderful to find a women's Bible Study out there written specifically for Catholics. There are some good Protestant ones out there, but their "slant" is not always close to the Magisterium's. Besides, where apart from a Catholic Bible study are you going to find comments that include the sacred tradition, Mary, and the Magisterium? Highly recommended for women at any stage in their life who are wondering about holiness, their faith, and trying to draw closer to God.

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Gilbert Morris' "Till Shiloh Comes" is one of the most memorable, brilliant novels I've ever read. The touching story of Joseph is brought to life in this page-turner, his troubles with his brothers and in Egypt wonderfully illustrated; I couldn't put it down. The realistic views and the accurate accounts make this a must-read.

Editorial Review:

The familiar story of patriarch Jacob and his twelve sons comes to new life and power in this masterful retelling by Gilbert Morris. Joseph seems to be the one who will be chosen to carry on the family name and birthright, but Jacob makes a startling announcement: "The scepter will not depart from Judah until Shiloh comes…" Lions of Judah, Book 4.

Editorial Review:

This sequel to Hadassah parallels the lives of Hadassah and Queen Esther in modern day Israel and the Persian kingdom. Each woman must remain strong as she fights for her people. The modern-day Hadassah, introduced to readers in the previous novel, is the wife of Israel's Prime Minister, with all its reflected power but also its isolation. The inner pain she feels as her beloved land and people are terrorized by political strife and bombings is made even more personal as her own father comes under attack. And then she learns of information that could have tragic repercussions on Jews living in Iraq, where Queen Esther had laid her own life on the line to save her people. The successor to Xerxes has no love for the Jews, and when he discovers the Star of David medallion on Leah (the young queen's candidate Esther wrote to in Hadassah), he is outraged. Leah is delegated to the "rejected" category, virtually a prisoner for life in the king's palace, with no hope and no future. Will Queen Esther and Mordecai be able to rescue Leah from the "ash heap" of Persian royal tradition? And even if they can, will Leah ever be able to truly love someone after all she has been through?

A very unique look at our Constitution. 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Geruld N. Lund makes his point very obvious in this book. Our Government should not be messed with. The way he depicts the significance of the US Constitution is amazing. He really shows just how America could be without our Constitution and how the Constitution should not be messed with. This book is a must read. When you finish this book, you'll look at our country and our Constitution a lot differently. You will see just how thankful you should be for it.

Outstanding What If Novel 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I read this book years ago, bought it, and have read it about twice a year ever since. It's style is almost science fiction, as Nathaniel Gorham, one of the signers of the Constitution, appears to a young senator's aide (Bryce Sherwood) to show him why a 27th amendment to the Constitution would be a bad idea. Bryce is taken to a place where the Constitution was never ratified, and shown how precious country's form of government is, and how much we take the check and balances of this government for granted. This is an excellent read and I highly recommend this, and all of Gerald Lund's books. For another science fictional type story, I suggest "The Alliance", also an excellent book on freedom.

madness, salvation... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

...and the Geresene demoniac of the gospels of Mark and Luke.

I'd known the story of the madman tormented by Legion. I never once took it so personally or considered looking at it from the man's point of view. That is, until I read a work of fiction that, while I was suspending disbelief and getting into the narrative, worked on my memories (from the Gospels and my little picture book of Bible stories that I loved as a child).

At the end, I closed the book and had to take a minute to compose myself. Groot writes a powerful and introspective novel that makes you back up and take a look at the story you think you know from the Gospels (i.e.: the madman living alone in a cave, saved when Jesus casts the demons into a herd of pigs who then take a header off a cliff and into the ocean). While I knew the Biblical account, I never considered that the madman had family or friends who loved and cared for him before, during, and after his possession. I never wondered what the man might have done for a living before having his mind torn to pieces. Groot makes him a whole person rather than just a cog in the wheel of a parable or a background character in the life of Jesus. In Groot's story he is a person, with a life, who suffers horribly and endures until one comes who is able to release him from his possession.

This is the type of Biblical fiction that I love. It does not diminish the Biblical account, but it humanizes the people, asks the reader to apply common sense and context to what is being read, and makes the situations more applicable to modern life.

Just to be useful, there is another recent work of fiction that provides some human insight into a Biblical event. Not the End of the World by Geraldine McCaughrean tells the story of the Deluge from the point of view of Noah's daughter, Timna. A few examples of that common sense I mentioned earlier: All things being equal, other people knew how to build boats and were much better sailors than Noah and his family...it takes a while to drown, so Noah and his sons probably had to listen to the cries of mothers and fathers as they tread water, banging on the side of the ark, and begging them to, at the very least, take the children on board...and so on.

These works of fiction do not diminish the Biblical accounts, but enhance them and ask us to bring context to what we are reading.

Editorial Review:

If there is a way into madness, logic says there is a way out. Logic says. Tallis, a philosopher’s servant, is sent to a Greek academy in Palestine only to discover that it has silently, ominously, disappeared. No one will tell him what happened, but he learns what has become of four of its scholars. One was murdered. One committed suicide. One worships in the temple of Dionysus. And one … one is a madman. From the author of The Brother’s Keeper comes a tale of mystery, horror, and hope in the midst of unimaginable darkness, the story behind the Geresene demoniac of the gospels of Mark and Luke.
