I have difficulty finding time to read, but enjoy listening to audiobooks as I fold laundry. Francine Rivers's books are entertaining and set my mind on beneficial things. I would certainly recommend this series. The recording is well done and the books well written.

Editorial Review:

Tim LaHaye’s most exciting series ever, Babylon Rising, continues with this explosive new installment, including more revelations than ever before. In The Edge of Darkness, LaHaye reveals the meaning behind some of the most carefully guarded Biblical prophecies to expose a conspiracy with terrifying consequences for our modern world.

This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.

Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.

Hardly Can Be Considered A Novel 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Let me first preface by stating that I am a Jerry Jenkins fan. I have read and truly enjoyed the entire Left Behind series, the Soon series, the instructional book "Writing For The Soul" and some of Jenkins' biographical work. There were certainly a few books that didn't pique my interest as much (The Regime, Kingdom Come), though even those I still considered well done overall, with good use of imagery and storytelling.

None of this was the case with "John's Story," the first book in the Jesus Chronicles series. This series was portrayed to be one which took us back in time to give us a fresh (yet understandably fictional) perspective of the day-to-day life of Jesus, his disciples, and the goings on of that time period. I, like many others, assumed this was to be a novel that read between the lines of scripture (as the Bible gives us many accounts, but doesn't provide every detail of everything that happened during Jesus' 3 years of public ministry), as well as a novel that provided vast accounts of interesting historical research not known to the average citizen. But I guess that is why we are taught never to assume anything.

Instead, the book portrays John as a rather cranky 90 year old man who tries to do things himself, but is getting old and feeble. Cerinthus, a heretic, is starting his own gnostic church in Ephesus where John lives, and it's up to John to counter him before his imminent death. Hence, his decision to write his personal account of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Later, John is captured, sent to Patmos, writes Revelation, comes home, reads Revelation to his church, writes the books of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John with the help of his protege Polycarp, and finally dies. There's your story in a nutshell. If that sent chills up your spine, then you need to get out more.

The ONLY positive feedback I can provide for this book is for the first chapter when John is awaiting his execution in Rome via being boiled in oil. While we know from history that John died a natural death and would certainly not die in the boiling oil, it was interesting to see where Jenkins and LaHaye were going with this turn of events and I was eager to find out where they were taking the story. However, after reading the next dozen chapters or so, I was fighting a game of willpower just to finish the book. The bulk of the entire story is John regurgitating his gospel almost word for word to his young disciple Polycarp, the future bishop of Smyrna. Most of the dialogue involves nothing more than fillers such as "Excuse me master, what did Jesus mean?" "Well son, he meant..." The dialogue also seemed very formal and fake. It was as if Polycarp always walked on eggshells while brown-nosing John, and John always seemed to be chastising Polycarp.

Now, I understand that we're not always going to like everything that even our favorite authors, musicians, and actors release. (I don't care for every Beatles song, though one can't deny the band's level of talent and its place in history). However, I can hardly even recognize "John's Story" as a fictional novel with any sort of creativity due to its immense volume of scripture quoted verbatim. As if simply hearing John explain his gospel to Polycarp for the bulk of the novel, while providing us with nothing else of significance were not bad enough, John's exile to Patmos and his prompting to write the book of Revelation were handled extremely pooly, as we know nothing of what John actually experienced. All we know is that the guards saw him and thought he was dead. It would have been nice to have been WITH John as the reader, to see what he was seeing and hear what he was hearing as he was caught up to heaven and given his divine revelation. (This sort of thing was done well in the Left Behind prequel "The Rapture" via the viewpoints of those who were taken up to heaven). The final blow to this disasterous account occurs when John returns home from Patmos and attends the Lord's Day service and we are forced to hear much of the book of Revelation read aloud and verbatim by Polycarp and John to the congregation. People cry and fall to their knees and occassionaly someone asks "What did that part mean?" but again, like in the writing of his gospel, John offers us nothing truly insightful that we didn't already know.

All in all, this was a book with zero plot, next to no constructive dialogue, no character development of any kind (except that John grew steadily weaker physically) and worst of all, a book that quoted so much direct scripture that barely one quarter of it (if that!) could be considered actual fictional writing. If one would like to call "John's Story" a vague study guide for the books of John and Revelation, then that's one thing, but term "fictional novel" hardly applies here.

While I have always respected Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins as men of faith who try to promote the gospel and help people make decisions for Jesus, I can't say I truly respect this Jesus Chronicles project as I have an ethical problem with people pretty much printing down scripture (with a few weak filler words in between), printing out several books of the Bible as the last 100 pages of the book, calling it a novel, and getting paid for each copy that sells. I think most would agree that if not for the authors' name power, this book would not even have a chance at getting published as is, let alone a chance at selling tons of copies. While I have always supported the work of these men, I will not be reading the next book in the Jesus Chronicles series. I would truly hope that Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins consider abandoning this project before the third book even has a chance to be written.

Editorial Review:

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins team up again for the first time since their phenomenally successful Left Behind series. Each book in this series paints a vivid picture of Jesus, told in the voice of his apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

A Classic Story! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In "The Robe", author C. Llyod Douglas created a sweeping personal epic about a man's journey to repentance and faith. It is a story of love, oppression, guilt, forgiveness, and faith. Marcellus Gallio is a young tribune from a wealth family who finds himself caught in the the winds of destiny when he is ordered to crucify Christ. Tormented by memories and by Christ's robe, Marcellus heads to Judea to find the root of the mystery. While the first part of the book is admittedly a little slow, the story takes off when the protagonist begins tracing Jesus's life and miracles. Douglas vividly protrays a tortured world of poverty and oppression though which his characters take their journey. Marcellus's slave Demetrius is also a well drawn out character. Biblical figures such as Justus, Peter, and Paul appear as well.
I must say that "The Robe" contains a number of memorable scenes with excellent dialogue but the final scene before Caligula's court tops them all. Of course there are historical inaccuries in the novel, but none so large as too distract from its literary merit. While I don't think it equals "Ben Hur" or "Quo Vadis", I still highly recommend "The Robe" to anyone interested in this genre.

Editorial Review:

A Roman soldier, Marcellus, wins Christ's robe as a gambling prize. He then sets forth on a quest to find the truth about the Nazarene's robe-a quest that reaches to the very roots and heart of Christianity and is set against the vividly limned background of ancient Rome. Here is a timeless story of adventure, faith, and romance, a tale of spiritual longing and ultimate redemption.

Gifts With No Return Receipt Required 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Another Christmas approaches, even as I sense my own not completely suppressed bah humbug mood rising in response to all the bling and blare of this increasingly materialistic season. I've for some time now felt that we are losing sight of the spirit of Christmas, substituting a rat race for the biggest, gaudiest array of gifts for the quiet family gathering and meditation on the birth of a new spirit in each and every one of us, a reminder to give ourselves over into the hands of a higher power in gratitude and submission. Towards that goal, reversing this trend where Santa has become the god of the holiday rather than Christ, I welcome such a book as Richard M. Barry's "The Shepherd's Prayer."

We have so many versions of this biblical story of the birth of Christ. Surely it is nearly impossible to find a new angle, a fresh perspective - but Barry has achieved this. In a slim, gift-ready volume, he has brought the reader back to Bethlehem to revisit this timeless event and its consequences and repercussions. In the bright light of Christ's birth, I would guess that few have thoroughly considered what might have happened to the shepherds who witnessed the star over Bethlehem, were visited by an angel with the news of a birth, and how they may have been treated by others since that birth. Nor have we seen much material on the mass murder by Herod of the infant boys in the surrounding area in his effort to murder the son of God. Surely this was an earth-shattering trauma to that community and beyond...

Barry brings us to this scene and gives us a look around through the eyes of Anam, literally meaning No Name, who has grown up into a 30-year old man with the bloody history of being an escapee of this mass murder, raised by others after his own parents were killed. Like any person in any age, he longs to know his roots, but no one will speak to him of that time, everyone shies away, some quite rudely, when he shows a lambskin blanket with mysterious writing on it and the name "Jesus." He seems to inspire only anger and fear when he asks about the place and time in which he was born, not getting any answers to his questions from anyone.

Until Anam meets a group of shepherds, ostracized from the rest, gathered in remembrance of a great day long ago. They embrace him kindly and fill in the blanks, telling him his name and providing the history of the day which we now remember, or should, every Christmas.

This is a well-written Christmas novel, not preachy or overly predictable as so many in this genre can be, but everything a good story requires. And, it can serve to remind us what we seem to have forgotten: Christmas is not about gifts under a tree. There is a far greater gift awaiting all of us, there for the asking.

~Zinta Aistars for The Smoking Poet

Editorial Review:

The Shepherds Prayer: A Christmas Novel was written by Richard M. Barry and is one of the few books that chronicles the extraordinary events at the time of Christ's birth and the Bethlehem shepherds, and does so in a most captivating way.

Better Then the Last Entry 4 out of 5 stars.

The Messiah has come! After the angels visit, the entire village of Bethlehem is buzzing about His long awaited arrival. Rachel and Zadok are honored to have been such a big part of His arrival and lead the village in making Mary, Josef, and baby Yeshua feel right at home.

Meanwhile, a growing caravan of travelers is coming to pay homage to Yeshua. Crossing the wilderness, they face many dangers from the land and marauders as they approach their destination. And they continue to watch the sky as the signs continue to unfold.

Unfortunately for all, King Herod is still as paranoid as ever. He wants any sign of rebellion crushed immediately, and the news of the arrival of Messiah will mean bad news to all concerned. Can the arrival of Yeshua be kept a secret from the mad king? If he does find out, what will the consequences be?

After reading the last book in the series, I guessed at the general outline of this one, and I was right. Anyone familiar with the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus will find no surprises in the story. Yet the characters were rich enough that the book was able to draw me in most of the time. The lessons on the meanings of Jewish law and how that ties into Jesus' birth were kept shorter this time then the last book, which really help. And, even though I knew what was coming, the ending still gripped and moved me.

Interestingly, there was no mention of any of the characters from the first few books of the series. While the visit to Jesus' birth was interesting, I hope we get back to them in the next entry in the series.

Editorial Review:

Who in Bethlehem could guess that their tiny, obscure village, populated by shepherds, would become the hinge upon which all history turns . . . and the focus of a terrifying rampage? Sixth Covenant is the conclusion of the three-book Nativity story within the A.D. Chronicles series. Sixth Covenant chronicles Mary, Yosef, and baby Yeshua in the first months of his life in Bethlehem. From the shepherd's visit to the escape to Egypt to the Bethlehem babies who gave their life for Jesus, discover the most critical events in the history of the world.

Riveting, insightful, faith strengthening! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Scribe follows the journeys of Silas, the scribe who traveled with Paul and Peter. Along the way, it gives amazing insight into the lives and faith of early church believers and brings the New Testament to life.

This book is incredibly relevant to our lives today and made such an impact on me. So inspiring! I was in tears by page seven. It's easily one my favorites in this series (along with The Prophet) and from Francine Rivers in general. I didn't want the story to end, and I'm sure I will read it again. It made me eager to read the New Testament from beginning to end, and to live for Christ no matter the cost- a true mark of a great Christian book!

Editorial Review:

Behind the men who shaped history are the heroes who forever changed it. The Scribe, the fifth and final book in the Sons of Encouragement series, beloved author Francine Rivers illuminates the life of Silas. Like the other Sons of Encouragement, this book tells the story of a lesser-known biblical character who made an impact on eternity. The Scribe tells the story of Silas, the man behind the spotlight who recorded most of the New Testament Scriptures we read today. In classic Francine Rivers style the story lets readers grasp the Scriptures in a whole new light--from a perspective never before imagined. Along the way readers will be captivated by the growth of the early church and the trials Paul suffers before he is martyred for the cause of Christ.

I read this book after reading "The Kingdom and the Crown" trilogy by Gerald N. Lund and I thought it was an incomplete repetition of those books. Whereas I completely fell in love with "The Kingdom and the Crown", I found "First Light" boring and hard to read. I personally don't recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Go back in time to first-century Jerusalem. It's a dark time in the world's holiest and most turbulent city. Walk with Peniel, the blind beggar who longs for rescue from his suffering. Peek into the lives of Susannah and Manaen, two lovers separated by overwhelming odds. And meet an unusual healer, who ignites a spark of controversy in the fire of hatred, deceit, and betrayal that is always burning in this ancient city. This first book in the A.D. Chronicles series will bring you face-to-face with the man called Yeshua.
