A new look at Eve 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We all know the story. Eve, the first woman, tempted by the serpent, and in turn tempting Adam to fall. I've always been on Eve's side. How could a woman with no past, no experience to draw on, withstand the wiles of Satan himself? In Havah we read Eve's side of the story told in her own words. We see the tempting and results in a new way, through the eyes of the woman who lived it.
Tosca Lee reveals an Eden the way it must have been in the beginning; fresh, new, and amazingly beautiful. Her writing is lyrical and poetical, the imagery so real I could see for myself the sparkling, newly formed world, not yet marred by sin or the excesses of mankind. I wish I could have seen it for myself, but reading Havah is almost as good. This writer always leaves the reader with something to think about, making us look at what we have always believed in a new way. Recommended.

Editorial Review:

Eve, exiled to a life outside paradise, nears death. As she waits, she recounts the story of her creation and a cruel existence. Revisit the birth of humankind through the eyes of the first woman ever to live.

Editorial Review:

In this third volume of his Women of Genesis series, Orson Scott Card paints a vivid picture of the intertwined lives of four celebrated women. We meet Leah, the oldest daughter of Laban, whose "tender eyes" prevent her from fully participating in the daily work of her nomadic family, and Rachel, the spoiled younger daughter, the petted and privileged beauty of the family -- or so it seems to Leah.

There is also Bilhah, an orphan who is not quite a slave but not really a family member, a young woman desperately searching to fit in, and Zilpah, who knows only how to use her beauty to manipulate men as she strives to secure for herself something better than the life of drudgery and servitude into which she has been born.

Into the desert camp comes Jacob, a handsome and charismatic kinsman who is clearly destined to be Rachel's husband. But that doesn't prevent the other women from vying for his attention.

Tracing their lives from childhood to maturity, Card shows how these women change each other -- and are changed again by the holy books that Jacob brings with him. Ambition, jealousy, fear, and love motivate them as they vie for the attention of Jacob, heir to the spiritual birthright of Abraham and Isaac.

More like a resource 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The life and times in and around the first century are facinating. Wangerin does a perfect job of reflecting ancient times with such realism it is a joy to walk in the steps of Paul. I find Wangerin's writings a great resource aside from the fictionalization of the characters themselves.

A challenge at times with so much detail, but worth it.

Paul: A Novel 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Walter Wangerin Jr. once again weaves his spell as he brings the Bible to life. His knowledge enables him to successfully entwine information from different Books of the Bible which helps improve one's understanding of Paul's journeys. The reader gains greater insight into his letters to the Galatians, etc. The rich details bring this period of time into perspective and often you remark to yourself ...."So that is why that happened". This has, as with his other books, added to my appreciation and understanding of the Bible.

Editorial Review:

Walter Wangerin brings us a dramatic, fictionalized retelling of the life of Paul based on biblical texts and extensive on-site research. Readers gain a new appreciation for the sacrifices of the apostles and the early believers and gain new insights into the life of the early church.

Caleb, the greatest of the Jews. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 23 people found this review helpful.

THE WARRIOR by Francine Rivers is the second of a five part series. I was a little disappointed with the first book in the series, The Priest, but volumes 2 and 3 (yes, I read them out of order) have been extraordinary and a welcome return to what I've come to expect from this very gifted writer. This one follows the story of Caleb, the half-breed from the tribe of Judah who, after the death of Moses, would become not only the greatest warrior of the twelve tribes of Israel, but I believe also God's most dedicated servant of a generation.

Caleb undoubtedly possessed the most unwavering faith among the Jews and this book closely chronicles his struggle, not just with his own sin, but with his inability to sway the people who, over and over, so quickly turned away from their Almighty deliverer. Caleb spent his life, when not destroying the idol-worshippers which infested the promised land, desperately reminding the people of God's grace upon them. Caleb's was a life surely mired in frustration as he watched not one, not even two, but three generations turn away from the Lord God.

Though Joshua is so often the one remembered of the generation of Jews delivered into the land, it was Caleb who was the strength of the people, often standing alone on the side of God. And though even his twelve sons would disappoint Caleb, near the end of his life it would be his one daughter who would give him hope for the future of the Jews.

Once again, Francine Rivers takes the reader through the stories of the Bible in intricate detail, adding narrative, but never venturing from the details.

When God has your ear... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Max Lucado, like few humans before him, has the amazing ability to write as though God himself were sitting in the room, dictating the book to him. He has opened himself up to the voice of heaven, and truly hears what needs to be said and what will touch his readers hearts.
This book is an incredible example of this gift. Though He tells the story of Christ's birth, one we hear every Christmas, this time it is told through the eyes of the angels.
Each chapter is more moving then the last. Causing tears and shouts of joy, as the angels bring God's gift to earth, fight the armies of hell and sing over the newborn King.
I recommend this book to adults and children alike. It will touch you in ways you maybe haven't been touched in awile and will remind you of what God did to bring you to himself. I am most certain it will remind you of how much He truly loves you.

Editorial Review:

Spiritual beings populate the stories of Scripture. Angels singing. Demons infecting. Heavenly hosts fighting . . . Ignore the armies of God and Satan and you ignore the heart of Scripture. Ever since the snake tempted Eve in Eden, we've known: there is more to this world than meets the eye.

In this classic Christmas novella, best-selling author Max Lucado imagines the spiritual conflict that surrounded the coming of Christ. Surely there was much. If Satan could pre-empt Christ in the cradle, there'd be no Christ on the cross.

Journey back in time to the very throne of God…and witness firsthand the glory, the wonder, and the battle that took place on the very first Christmas.

Editorial Review:

Sarai was a child of ten years, wise for her age but not yet a woman, when she first met Abram. He appeared before her in her father's house, filthy from the desert, tired and thirsty. But as the dirt of travel was washed from his body, the sight of him filled her heart. And when Abram promises Sarai to return in ten years to take her for his wife, her fate was sealed.

Abram kept his promise, and Sarai kept hers they were wed, and so joined the royal house of Ur with the high priesthood of the Hebrews. So began a lifetime of great joy together, and greater peril: and with the blessing of their God, a great nation would be built around the core of their love.

Bestselling author Orson Scott Card uses his fertile imagination, and uncanny insight into human nature, to tell the story of a unique woman--one who is beautiful, tough, smart, and resourceful in an era when women had little power, and are scarce in the historical record. Sarah, child of the desert, wife of Abraham, takes on vivid reality as a woman desirable to kings, a devoted wife, and a faithful follower of the God of Abraham, chosen to experience an incomparable miracle.

This was a great book! I was in the middle of another book when I got it, so I didn't get to read it right away and my husband started reading it. He loved it so much and I had to wait until he was done before I could start on it! And he never reads my books! But he finished it quickly, so I didn't have to wait long. :-)

Meet a Prophet 5 out of 5 stars.

The Prophet (Sons of Encouragement)Even if you are an avid student of the Bible, most of us don't spend the time it took Francine Rivers to get to know the prophet Amos. We might study the words he wrote but Rivers has brought the man to life. I came away from this novelette with a new appreciation for the calling that God has on a man's life and what path that might lead one on. Just as Amos was compelled to walk the chosen way that God lead him - so are we. I thank Francine Rivers for reminding me that I too must walk in love and obedience - no matter what the personal cost.

Editorial Review:

Behind the men who shaped history are the heroes who forever changed it. In The Prophet, the fourth book in the Sons of Encouragement series, beloved author Francine Rivers illuminates the life of Amos. Francine examines the life of Amos and his relationship to Israel during its prosperous years. Amos's message--and his relationship with God--made him unpopular. But his challenge to those who were enjoying the blessings of prosperity was crucial then and is strikingly timely today as well.
