Compassionate look at cutting-edge fertility treatment 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"Expecting Miracles" is a warm, compassionate and uplifting description of the experiences of a dozen or so couples who sought help in conceiving a child from the author's infertility clinic. Each chapter tells one couple's story, as a sort of a mini-character study or "case study"; we learn about the patients' medical histories, their relationship with their significant others, their personalities, and the impact that their difficulty in conceiving & carrying to term has had on them & their families. Interspersed with the human stories are clear & succinct explanations of the science and medical technology used to help infertile couples conceive. Dr. Zouves' reverence for the spirituality and mystery inherent in the reproductive process was particularly refreshing.

As someone currently undergoing the initial stages of fertility treatment, I found the scientific information very helpful in understanding more about the delicate reproductive process (and how today's medicine can assist). I also found myself responding very emotionally to the plight of these couples. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to shed a tear at some of these beautiful, yet painful, stories! Nearly all of the stories have happy endings, though, and while that certainly does make for a less depressing book, it probably represents an unrealistic cross-section of infertility patients. Not everyone can be helped (sadly, I have several dear friends who fall into this category) and I imagine relatively few couples have the resources to pursue the kind of cutting-edge treatment Dr. Zouves describes - flying to the West Coast constantly, staying in hotels, paying for surrogates, not to mention the cost of the treatment itself (rarely covered by insurance). On the other hand, the book may well provide the necessary hope for those who are just barely hanging on in the midst of the physically and emotionally grueling treatment.

Editorial Review:

Expecting Miracles is a moving, in-depth look at the options, decisions, and unexpected twists, turns, and disappointments that couples experience as they work with Dr. Christo Zouves, founder and medical director of the Zouves Fertility Center. As he shares his own story and those of the patients, egg donors, and surrogates with whom he has worked, Dr. Zouves provides a rare glimpse into the human side of reproductive medicine-and all that goes into helping infertile couples realize their dreams of parenthood.

Don't start infertility treatment until you read this! 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe that anyone let me start the process of infertility treatment (beyond the clomid stage) without telling me to read this. I found it on my own when having to decide whether my only chance to have a child, egg donation, was right for my husband and myself. I only WISH someone had told me about it sooner. It would have helped me think about all of "this" in a not so crazy way. It's technical, but, those of us who go through infertility procedures know more about the getting pregnant process than most books and online souces give us credit for. These authors treat us like intelligent human beings.

This is a wise book ! 5 out of 5 stars.

As an infertility specialist, I'd heartily recommend this book to all infertile couples - and their doctors as well. The forte of this book is the superb way in which emotional issues have been discussed.

I could have lost my mind several times without this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This compassionately written book has provided a constant reference and framework within which to think during the hugely emotional period of infertility. It has managed to normalise to some extent the weird world in which readers of this book dwell. It has contributed largely to my change of views on the right of the child to know its biological history. I would recommend it as essential reading for anyone going into third party parenting.

Wonderful resource 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book helped me immensely in bringing closure to our infertility journey and helped me find peace. It answered and helped explain many of the issues I had been dealing with while struggling with infertility. I definitely recommend it to anyone who asks God, "Why me?" However, I would like to add that you may want to wait to read it until you are near the end of infertility treatments and considering other options. It is very straightforward and may upset someone who is just starting off dealing with infertility.

No room for God's power 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I read this book at a very low point in my fertility journey. After finishing this book, I felt like the the author left no room for God's power to work through any fertility situation.

I understand that she never conceived, and decided to adopt, but not all of us are there. I still feel that God can bring me a baby, even if I get to be as old as Sarah! I guess I didn't feel the same from this author.

It's a blessing! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been a great help. I am in the early stages of infertility. My husband and I have had so much pressure from family, friends and the church about when are you going to have a baby. I laughed and cried while reading it. Finally, I said to myself someone understands. Even if you just started on this "journey of infertility", I recommend it. The author does not leave you hopeless. She helped me to remember what is important while still validating my feelings. I cannot make having a baby my "idol". God is still good!

Much Needed Encouragement in this Area!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Sandra Glahn and Dr. William Cutrer have written a "Christian guide" to the practical, moral, marital, and spiritual challenges of infertility, and as such, it has brought my family some well-deserved help in this area.

The books brings solid facts, detailed information, and a message of encouragement to infertile couples, and those who work with them, along with answers to questions they ask most often. Some of those questions we have asked, such as:
-Should we consider high-tech fertility treatments?
-What about donor insemination? Donor eggs?
-How do we respond to nosy friends and relatives?
-Where can we go for the best advice?
-How can God allow this to happen?

And there are other questions which you may find in your search for answers. There are 16 chapters of great information, and an appendix at the end for more information to seek out. This is a great resource!!!

Editorial Review:

There's good news for couples who have been diagnosed as infertile; more than half of them will eventually conceive a child. One in six Americans of childbearing age experiences infertility problems-typically causing stress, sexual difficulties, marital discord, and a disturbing uncertainty about the future. This book focuses on building an attitude of hope and optimism.

The Bible of Infertility Treatment 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a revolutionary, ground-breaking study of the importance of bacterial infections in causing infertility. I was treated by Dr. Toth after suffering miscarriages at the age of 43, and conceived my second son at 45 and my daughter at 47, both after treatments with him. I only hope more women learn of his methods.

The single most important book for people struggling with infertility 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU PROCEED TO IUI or IVF. I mean it. Outstanding in every way. Hard to imagine that it might apply to you, but read it anyway. Once you realize that infections can be passed down in utero (meaning you could have gotten them from your parents or in-laws) and that traditional STD testing AND traditional treatment methods only mask the problem, you begin to accept that perhaps pathogens are playing a role in your infertility. Know that if you have undiagnosed harmful bacteria in your uterus, and you succeed in getting pregnant without being propery treated, you are playing Russian roulette with your baby's life and health. Learn about the connection between prostate cancer and heart disease in parents (like yours) and a baby's future infertility (you could be that baby!) I've met several women who went to this doctor and were stunned to find out what they tested positive for... They realized they'd had symptoms they didn't even know meant anything (like frequent urination) when they were really signs of low-lying infection. One of these women just had her baby after 6 previous m/c's. Another is pg naturally with twins (first pregnancy after years of infertility.) Amazing stuff. The single most important book in the infertility world.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Attila Toth's thirty years as a practicing infertility specialist and pathologist have convinced him that the only explanation for the alarming infertility rate, so far out of proportion with natural law, is the increasing presence of contaminating bacteria in the genital tracts of both sexes. In Fertility vs. Infertility, he documents how and why this process has escalated so dramatically over the past few decades of increased sexual activity.

donor conception 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I found this book the best I had ever read regarding donor conception. It covered so many of the issues that I needed to think about such as why we should tell our children the truth about their conception and what we will need to get for them in the way of information about their donor.
The clinic we went to didn't tell us a fraction of what this book has in it.
It should be a must read for anyone thinking of using donor conception, those of us who have kids and all the doctors, nurses etc who work in the area.

Editorial Review:

Drawing on the experiences of parents, offspring and donors, including her own and her family's story, this is an exploration of the process of donor conception, from the consumer advocate for the Donor Conception Support Group of Australia.;Caroline Lorbach takes the reader step by step through the process of deciding to use donor conception, choosing a donor, and discussing the decision with others. She also considers the perspective of the donor alongside those of parents and offspring.

Editorial Review:

Are girls entering puberty earlier than they used to? This question, which has been debated recently by doctors and scientists in the pages of Time magazine and the New York Times, proves that there is still a great deal to learn about women's reproductive health. Female Fertility and the Body-Fat Connection is the record of one scientist's groundbreaking and decades-long work on the connections among fertility, body fat, and reproductive health in women.

Rose E. Frisch explains here how, in women, a certain amount of body fat is crucial to the reproductive system and sexual maturation. Women who are too lean are infertile and cannot conceive children; young girls who are too thin have a delayed onset of their first period. Female Fertility and the Body-Fat Connection illuminates how and why a "critical fitness" level underlies a woman's reproductive health. In the process Frisch gives readers a comprehensive view of the research done to date on the relationship between body composition and fertility and also describes her own journey as a woman scientist working to advance her critical-fitness hypothesis both to the general public and the scientific community. Frisch answers the questions every woman has about the desirable weight for health and fertility and even includes tables to help women find their own best weight. She also demonstrates how important diet and exercise are for the long-term reproductive health of women, and shows what factors influence the onset of puberty in girls.

Each milestone of the reproductive life span is affected by food intake and energy output, the factors affecting the storage of fat. Female Fertility and the Body-Fat Connection is a cornerstone to understanding the health of girls and women.
