Editorial Review:

Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has launched a new kind of sexual revolution. Quickly becoming one of the most sought after drugs in history, the little blue pill created a sea change within the pharmaceutical industry—from how drugs could be marketed to the types of drugs put into development—as well as the culture at large. Impotency is no longer an embarrassing male secret; now it is called "erectile dysfunction," and is simply something to "ask your doctor" about. And over 16 million men have.

The Rise of Viagra is the first book to detail the history and the vast social implications of the Viagra phenomenon. Meika Loe argues that Viagra has changed what qualifies as normal sex in America. In the quick-fix, pill-for-everything culture that Viagra helped to create, erections can now be had by popping a pill, making sex on demand, regardless of age or infirmity, and, potentially, for the rest of one's life.

Drawing on interviews with men who take the drug, their wives, doctors and pharmacists as well as scientists and researchers in the field, this fascinating account provides an intimate history of the drug's effect on America. Loe also examines the quest for the female Viagra, the impact of the drug around the world, the introduction of new erection drugs, like Levitra and Cialis, and the rapid growth of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry.

This wide-ranging book explains how this medical breakthrough and cultural phenomenon have forever changed the meaning of sex in America.

Infertility info alone worth the purchase 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Before I had read this book or been introduced to the "Right For Your Type" diet concept, I followed something very close to what D'Adamo advocates for my type. After 5 years of infertility, we conceived our baby daughter. Now that I have read the author's other books, I am not surprised to see that his recommendations can help infertile couples conceive and help those with recurring miscarriage.

I understand that carnivorous Type As and vegetarian Type Os will struggle with the diet. My encouragement is to read Live Right For Your Type first so that you actually get the science part of this. Then ask the many infertile women who have conceived after following his diet how "nuts" it is.

Contradicts what my nutritionist and doctor advises 1 out of 5 stars.

The concept of the book is interesting which got me reading in the first place. Although as I hit page 100, I just could not continue. I was to avoid all cheeses that are mostly considered safe for me and baby and that it was OK for me to eat some harmful (unpasteurized) ones. I feel sorry for the pregnant woman and her fetus who follows this ridiculous diet plan and ends up with listeria. There are also some "no no" fish that are listed on the OK list also. But I was absolutely floored when it told me to avoid all meat.. (protein is essential!) This is a crucial time for optimal health so please, just eat healthy and see a doctor or nutritionist who actually knows what they are talking about.

A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was sceptical about buying another book to "help" me through my struggles with infertility, but once I began to read this book I wished that I had purchased it much earlier. This book gives advice as well as reason why you may be asking hard questions about what you are doing wrong in your life to have to go through this. Because of reading this book I am strongly considering starting a support group in my area. I am very thankful that I was able to take the time to read this book.

When the Cradle is Empty-Answering Tough Questions about Infertility 3 out of 5 stars.

Nice to have both spouses experiences with infertility expressed.
I did not agree with everything written in the book regarding assisted reproductive technology. I believe the Catholic understanding of always keeping the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital union intact. The end never justifies the means. Other than that, I was encouraged by the book.

Editorial Review:

Having a child is a cherished dream for most of us. But what happens when nothing happens--or a pregnancy ends in tragedy? Authors John and Sylvia Van Regenmorter share their own experience in When the Cradle Is Empty: Answering Tough Questions about Infertility. With wisdom, compassion, and sound biblical advice, this comprehensive guide helps couples explore their options, get the medical help they need, deal with pressures from family and friends, and protect their marriage.

It is a good novel 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The book was interesting in that it told a woman's story and how she successfully won the battle of infertility. However, if someone is looking to this book as a guideline they will be disappointed. This is not a how-to book.

Thank you Julia - It worked for me 5 out of 5 stars.

After being told I'd never have my own biological child, also because of high FSH levels, I went to Amazon.com (Jan 1999) and researched infertility. Thank God I read Julia's soothing book. It inspired me to follow her path. After Iyengar Yoga, Chinese Medicine, Visualization, reading most of the books in her wonderful bibliography, (and 2 unsuccessful rounds of FSH IUI), my openess to others about my struggle led to a holistic practicioner in San Diego (Dr. Carolyn Mein, D.C.) that balanced my hormones naturally and directly led to the birth of my now 15 month old daughter (Aug 2000). Bless you Julia! I didn't know where to begin and you were the calm voice in the storm affirming my inner voice. I am so grateful for everything this journey has taught me.

Editorial Review:

One in six couples in America will experience reproductive problems. Julia Indichova and her husband were part of that statistic. According to several fertility specialists Julia's high FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) level was an indication that her body was no longer producing fertilizable eggs. Her only chance of conceiving, they said, was in-vitro-fertilization with a donor egg. After a futile quest for a more hopeful prognosis, Julia searched through a variety of holistic alternatives and finally decided upon a personal healing regimen. She followed it as single-mindedly , as one would follow a doctor's prescription of antibiotics. Her daughter Adira was conceived naturally, eight months later, and was born on April 29, 1994.

Editorial Review:

Until now, there has been little practical advice on what women can do about ticking biological clocks. What Every Woman Should Know About Her Biological Clock is the first book to explore a woman's reproductive life span completely, from beginning to end. Based on Cara Birrittieri's own experience of running up against a slowing biological clock, she shows women for the first time how to "tell what time it is" with a simple blood test that gives them a peek at the state of their ovaries. What Every Woman Should Know About Her Biological Clock will: * Show women how ovarian reserve tests can monitor the biological clock. * Give women an evolutionary explanation for such an unforgiving clock. * Offer a method to calculate the duration of the biological clock. * Explain how birth control pills may enhance fertility. * Provide a way to manipulate the monthly cycle using birth control pills. * Present steps to preserve and prolong fertility. * Provide a critical look at midlife celebrity birth announcements in the media.

I am an acupuncturist that specializes in infertility and I love this book! I have read many books on infertility and many of them leave women (and men) feeling disconnected and uninspired. This book has very practical tools and inspires us to see all of life as divinely ordered. This book is for the person who is willing to let go of being the victim of any situation, and truly open up to embracing all of life.
What a wonderful opportunity!

Editorial Review:

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the number one cause of irregular periods and infertility in women. It affects 10% of women worldwide. PCOS is a condition of overproduction of androgens by the ovaries. In essence, the ovaries produce too much testosterone, causing abnormal hair growth, irregular or absent menstruation/ovulation, acne, and small benign cysts on the ovaries. If left undetected, PCOS can lead to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. While researchers haven’t determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which causes obesity.

That’s where this book comes in. Insulin resistance can be controlled with a low-carb diet fairly easily. What to Do When the Doctor Says It’s PCOS gives sufferers a diet and nutritional treatment program that goes beyond the usual regimen of birth control pills and fertility drugs. It can be used as an alternative and/or adjunct to their current treatments.

ALL the things you can do to boost your odds. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I are just beginning to explore the reasons we're having trouble conceiving, and before going to our doctors, I wanted to make sure that we were giving ourselves the best possible odds. This book is great at summarizing the many things affecting fertility that are in our control right now, and since reading this book, we've changed our diet, started taking supplements and herbs, and begun acupuncture. But the book also covers traditional medical treatments; it just doesn't assume that they're a first step. The book is pretty short, which is good, but I would have liked more detail about particular herbs. Also, it's written with British terms, which is only a problem if you don't know that linseed oil and flax seed oil are the same thing (I spent a lot of time looking for "linseed oil," which is the British name). There are also some suggestions that we're not up to ("don't store food in plastic"; "eat only organic food"), but that's our fault, not the book's.

I highly recommend it!
