A great book full of variety!! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.
But then I discovered Amazon.com. Here there were millions of choices of origami books, but I chose to get "Origami Zoo, an Amazing Collection of folded paper animals." This book was at my level exactly!!
My fav models are, so far:
- The Penguin. Even though this is one of the easiest, it still looks lifelike side-on.
- The Owl. This model is also 2D, but it perches on a thin rod, and looks lifelike as well.
- The Duck. This model is a particularly cute 3D one!
- The Sea Turtle. This model is both fun to make and cool to look at!!
- The Fox. This model is rather easy, 3D, and lifelike!
None of the models in this book are very easy. Most of them are at the intermediate level, but the last 10 or so models are complex. I still haven't gotten to the real complex models yet, but when I do, I hope I have a lot of large origami paper on hand!!
This book contains info at the start, about folds, paper, designing models and so on.
I would recommend this book to people who like to make a variety of animals, not just plain four legged animals, but insects and sea creatures as well!!

Editorial Review:

In Origami Zoo, two of the world's finest paper folders present an exciting collection of original origami animals. Their creatures, ranging from the exotic to the familiar, the elegant to the whimsical, will both inspire the beginner and challenge the most accomplished folder.

Choose among the dolphin, penguin, swan, owl, goose, kangaroo, praying mantis, or even the mythical Pegasus or extinct wooly mammoth. Each of these thirty-seven new projects is true origami-folded from a single piece of paper with no cutting or gluing-and is complete with clear step-by-step diagrams, instructions, and a photograph of the finished model.

Origami Zoo will challenge and delight anyone with a penchant for creating something wonderful out of (almost) nothing.

Great for melt and pour soap creations 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I did not read the sections on candle making, so this review is strictly based on the soap sections. I found this book to be one of the most helpful ones I've read (I checked out a lot from the library). True, it does not cover the cold process, but as the more simple, melt and pour method is all that I'm interested in, this book is right on target for my needs.

In addition to the color and fragrance info, it discusses stenciled soap, soap on a rope, variegated soap, embedded soap, three-dimensional soap, imprinted soap, soap balls, customized shampoo, massage oil, bath salts liquid soap and more.

I also enjoyed Chapter 19 which is devoted entirely to aromatherapy. It lets you know what a particular scent is noted for (i.e. boosting memory, fighting infections, relieving congestion, calming effect, etc.), as well as whether it is photosensitizing (increases your chance for a sunburn), a possible irritant to sensitive skin, possesses antibacterial qualities, etc.

Great introduction to crafting with beeswax 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book was my introduction to crafting with beeswax. The book has detailed instructions and beautiful detailed photographs to follow along with. Six areas of beeswax crafting are introduced to the reader: candle making, beeswax modeling, making cone shaped crayons, encaustic art (melting crayons onto an iron and then "painting" it onto paper), furniture polish, and making beauty creams and soap.

As I said this is a great introduction, and as such, sometimes there is only one project per category. I think this book is helpful for a beginner and if you find that enjoy these crafts and you want to do more of one the same, then you may either custom design your own projects (when applicable) or find other recipes or instructions from other books and/or sources. If you know and understand this before buying the book I think you will be very happy.

The photographs are wonderful and I found them very helpful. The different kinds of beeswax are explained and important melting safety tips are clearly written. Many different types of candle making are explained, some using sheets of wax that are rolled by hand and others that used melted beeswax. Dipping candles, hand modeling candles, and using molds, both hard and flexible are all included here. Five recipes for creams are included, and one soap that uses beef tallow (fat). Five wood/furniture polish recipes are here, one of which is made with beef tallow. Instructions to make the crayons are here along with tips for successful sketching with them. Encaustic art is clearly explained although it still seemed a difficult craft, and requires specialty equipment, which does not make it easy or inexpensive to try out. (I had previously read about it without accompanying photographs and didn't understand what was being communicated. Other instructions I've read elsewhere don't fully outline the proper materials needed, so this book did a great job of explaining it.)

A great introduction if you've never watched these crafts being made in person or if you are a visual learner and have a difficult time following directions that are not accompanied by photographs.

Editorial Review:

For centuries, beeswax has been prized for making fine candles and preserving the rich shine on treasured furniture. But wait! You can also color it, model it, mold it, and even "paint" with it. Here are step-by-step photographs that demonstrate how to model delicate wax flowers, make wax pictures, wax crayons, furniture polish, soap, face creams, and beautiful beeswax candles.

Creative Ideas Galore! 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I knew I had to have this book the minute I browsed through it. It not only gives you tons of creative ideas, but sparks your creativity to come up with ideas on your own. This is not a step-by-step "how to" book. It's more of a decorating and idea guide.

I loved the carved squash and gourds. You better believe my house will be filled with them next fall. I also loved the simple groupings of candles - whites/creams, fun colors, fun shapes and sizes. And who can resist the various themes: garden, seashore, etc.. Are you starting to see a trend here? The possibilities are endless.

This book sits on my nightstand. I thumb through it every few days or so for ideas. I'll soon be making my own candles, and you better believe I'll be using lots of the ideas I found in this book to display them.

This book proves you don't need a ton of money to do some really awesome decorating. You just need some imagination! BUY IT NOW! It's a great bargain and a lovely and well-made book. No cheesy paper - this is quality stuff with lots of great pictures and captions. You won't be disappointed. This would make a GREAT gift book - pair it up with a couple of candles and some ribbon for a really classy gift.

Editorial Review:

Candles are remarkable for their ability to instantly and dramatically change the mood of a room, enhance any occasion and create an atmosphere of enchantment and romance. Making them by hand gives you Complete control over such essential factors as size, shape, scent, color and even texture, and homemade candles are both a stunning contribution to any home decor, as well as a one-of-a-kind, highly personalized gift. this Comprehensive guide to making candles explains the processes of dipping, molding and rolling candles and provides creative suggestions for displaying the inspirational results.

Editorial Review:

Relatively new to the candle-making kingdom, gel is a readily available, adaptable substance that can be transformed into all sorts of fascinating candle looks. By melting the jelly-like goop, adding color and perhaps fragrance, and pouring into a heatproof container with a wick, anyone can whip up one-of-a-kind candles. Dawn Cusick's Gel Candles presents a stunning selection of gel candle creations. Sometimes the containers define the style: Moroccan painted glasses, Easter candles in glass eggs, a teacup, an etched bud vase. But more often what makes the candle unique are the items embedded within: beads, wire, seashells, metal charms, marbles, tiny ceramic figures. The transparency of the gel--even when tinted--enables the treasures to shine through.

Overall, the step-by-step directions are adequate, and the author includes numerous safety precautions. Some of the embedded choices, however, appear rather questionable: silk flowers, plastic toys, and paper photocopies all appear in projects, and although the author warns to keep such items away from the wick and to extinguish the flame when it comes within one inch of the container bottom, such warnings seem insufficient, especially for beginners. And the wicks themselves are often short and unanchored, threatening more hazards if they burn too long. With these caveats in mind, Gel Candles is a worthwhile, whimsical idea-filled guide to the subject. --Amy Handy

Great idea book for candle makers 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this book, but it isn't what I thought it might be. I wish there had been a review of it. It has beautiful photos and beautiful candles, but it isn't really a teaching book with specific instructions. For those of you who are already adept at candle making, it is an inspiring book filled with good ideas. With that said, I think it is a better book for the "Martha Stewart" fans who are looking for great ways to arrange candles. Most of the candle making ideas are tried and true ideas (such as the snowball candle) that are simply arranged in more decorative ways. There are other books that work better for instructional purposes, but this is a beautiful book.

Editorial Review:

Includes a practical guide to making candles, from melting, scenting, dipping and twisting to eleaborate decorative effects.

This book starts out defining terms and talking about basic techniques/coloring/scenting. It even pictures and defines different types of candles, which I haven't seen in any of the other candle books that I have. It shows: how to twist tapers, paint candles(interesting pics),rubberstamp candles, paint with crayons(I haven't seen this in other books either),use gold leaf with candles, use paper with candles, make photo frame candles (unique),how to make wallpaper candles, shows great wedding candles, how to use materials to make candle designs( doilies, stickers, vellum, matallic paper, beads, fabric applique', sandpaper, tinfoil, stones, mirrors, buttons, tree bark, reeds,
shells, charms, wire, metallic scratching, denture cleanser color effects(very neat)and, small spices/food additive candles). It also shows you how to make wax designs to stick on your candles, make whipped wax candles(some different designs w/ pearls, ect),make cracked candles, goldlog candles, string wrapped candles, dripped candles, stacked candles, iceberg candles,wire/jewel effect candles, and an assortment of beaded candles. It also shows different ways to make holders or candle assessories with beads, tassels, wire, vent caps, and more. There are gift bag ideas and some templates. Every page is covered with pics and as you can see there are endless ideas that are unique. Crafts include pics, instructions and material list for each project in easy reading format. I had forgotten just how many ideas that this book had in it until I sat down to write this review. I think this book would be just fine for a beginner and has inspiration enough for pros.
