A Great Book for Wine Beginners or Veterans 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Most of the recipies in this book were devised around a certain wine choice. The author has included a whole slew of dishes and the wines that will complement them or be used in them. The book is very user-friendly. You'll find chapters on appetizers, salads, pasta, poultry & meat, seafood, vegetables, desserts, and more. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

In the alphabet of gourmets, D stands for Dean & DeLuca, long considered one of the finest food emporiums in the world. Now they bring their vast culinary expertise to this stunning new cookbook with over 80 inspired recipes, each complemented by carefully chosen wines. Chapters take us from aperitifs and appetizers, salads, and entrees, right through to desserts and melt-in-the-mouth friandises to enjoy with coffee or after-dinner drinks. Balsamic-Glazed Mushrooms whet the appetite, accompanied by a glass of Zinfandel. Duck Breasts with Caramelized Pears delight the palate with a tangy Riesling. Chocolate Truffle Tartlets satisfy the sweet tooth when daringly paired with Cabernet port. But this is more than a delectable cookbook. It includes a primer on wine (with particular advice on California wines and why certain varietals bring out the flavors of various dishes), a handy food and wine matching chart, and a glossary of unusual terms and ingredients. Rich color photography highlights both the painterly landscapes of fertile vineyards and a host of exquisite dishes. A glorious celebration of the many pleasures of the table.

More than 800,000 subscribers heartily agree: there's always something delicious going on at Food & Wine. It's the unrivaled leader in the field, and serves up recipes, menus, advice on cooking gourmet travel, sophisticated entertaining tips, wine reviews, ideas on pairing wine and food, and articles on the hottest chefs and innovations in the culinary world. And here, all in one place, is every recipe published in the magazine during the year 2000--more than 500 of them! Each is kitchen-tested on everyday (not industrial) equipment, especially so you can recreate them in your own home. Here's real food that real people who want to eat well can actually prepare (unlike the too-complicated dishes in other cooking magazines, which seem to require a year spent at the Cordon Bleu!). Put these on your plate: Picadilo-Stuffed Mushrooms, Goat Cheese and Pepper Empanadillas, Fresh Herb Soup, Sicilian Eggplant Stuffed with Garlic and Melting Cheese, Spicy Crawfish Salad on Brioche, Snapper in Chile-Lime Sauce, Rack of Lamb with Cabernet Sauce, and Hazelnut Meringue Ice Cream Sandwiches. For the most innovative menus and wine pairings--whether you entertain every night or just for the holidays-Food & Wine is the authority.

This cookbook is top notch. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I own 120 cookbooks, and I read others whenever I get a chance. I cook French, Indian, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican. And, yes, I'm a fool for good restaurants. This is one of the cookbooks I would least like to do without. It gives a good idea of what Provencal cuisine is like, and the recipes are detailed and complete. And the results are delicious. I hope it gets reprinted.

Finest Cookbook I Own 5 out of 5 stars.

This is simply the finest cookbook in my library, and one above all others that I could simply not do without. It is both a pleasure to read and a goldmine of authentic, simple, provencale cuisine that allows the reader a clear understanding of what this food is really about. It is moe than a cookbook, it is a window into a world that makes one want to pack his bags and move to Provence.

"South African Gourmet Food & Wine" by Myrna Rosen and Lesley Loon

Don't be fooled by the title; this book is for all of us. Not only for experienced or gifted cooks but for those, like me, trying their hand for the first time. I particularly liked being told how many guests each recipe is designed to feed. I liked being given the option of measuring in either Metric or Imperial and I liked the simple way each recipe is explained. I showed it to a Master Chef friend and, despite his twenty years of experience, he was impressed.

Two old favourites that caught my eye were a Cape Malay dish called "Bobotie" based on fish and spices and "Monkey Gland Steak" with a terrific sauce of onions, mushrooms, Worcestershire and tomato sauce.

At random here are a few more : "Boerewors" (a typically South African barbeque sausage), Tomato Bredie (a tasty meat and tomato stew), Melktert (milk tart), Watermelon jam, Herring in mustard sauce, Sundried tomato and roasted garlic spread, Bombay curried banana chicken soup, Fish steak au poivre, Herb crusted rack of lamb and so on and so on and so on.....

This book is a must if you have ever lived in, or visited, South Africa. It will bring back many memories.

This book is a god-send. I can't tell you how many times I have turned to it to find out how to store a particular vegetable, or how to tell if a particular fruit is ripe. It is also helpful for explaining different cooking techniques. A wonderful addition for anybody's cookbook library!!! Any food-lover would love to get this as a gift....

One of the must-haves for your kitchen! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I first started toying with the idea of going to culinary school many years ago, a chef I spoke with recommend 2 books to get my feet wet with culinary terms, knowledge and technique. The first was Larousse "Gastronomique" and "The Food Lover's Companion". So, I immediately went out and purchased both and still have them to this day. I also recommend them to others just starting out, as well as to food enthusiasts, because they make great reference materials.

Both "Gastronomique" and "Food Lover's" serve similar purpose with different levels of detail. The excellent thing about "The Food Lover's Companion" is that it is much, much more portable than "Gastronomique" and gives you just the right amount of information needed.

I have been in the food industry for years now, and still will flip through it and get wrapped up in finding various things I didn't know or had forgotten. It's one of those books you can take to a doctor's appt, or an oil change and while you are waiting and flip it and learn a few things!

Wine and Food Lover 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book in 1994 after a trip to the Napa Valley. Zin is one of our favorite wines and this book is filled with wonderful, sound recipes that are great with Zin or by themselves. I've used other wines in some of the recipes and been equally happy with the results.

It's a great book!

Right on with good nutrition except for fruits and veggies 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.

Editorial Review:

Arigorous analysis of dramatic studies on therapeutic power of nutrition has led Dr. Oscar H. Franco and a team of acclaimed researchers to determine that substituting certain foods in place of the leading medical "cocktail" for preventing cardiovascular disease yields identical benefits. As reported in the British Medical Journal, they concluded that daily consumption of seven specific foods could result, on average, in an increase in total life expectancy of 6.6 years for men and 4.8 years for women.

Dr. Ralph Felder, a physician and a master-trained chef, has now taken these groundbreaking studies out of the laboratory and put them into the kitchen. Using his inspired yet easy-toprepare recipes and creative menu plans, along with a few simple lifestyle guidelines, anyone can add healthy years to his or her life, enjoy-with few restrictions-a wide range of delicious and satisfying foods, and lose weight safely and easily, while indulging in goodies like chocolate and nuts.

Not much new, four years later? 2 out of 5 stars.
32 of 37 people found this review helpful.

Carla Capaldo has updated her book originally published in 1998, giving readers a "New, Updated Version" with over forty new entries. That's an average of ten a year, which seems a bit light to my mind.
Her book-- regardless of the edition-- is a mix of restaurant recommendations, leads to wineries and enoteca, cheese shops, and also fattoria (farms) that offer such goods as olive oil, honey, etc. All well and good, but unless you are travelling all around Tuscany, over 95% of this book will be of little use.
That said, much of its value will be as armchair reading-- and here too, I have some problems, particularly with her organization. As might be expected, the entries are organized geographically-- but by a system that most readers will find baffling. For instance, San Gimignano appears in the section on Siena (it is in Siena Province) while its neighbor fifteen miles away, Volterra, appears in the same section with Pisa, many miles to the north. But many of the villages in the province of Florence, such as Panzano, Radda, and Greve have their own section-- Chianti Classico.
If it stopped there, one might eventually be able to discern what is where, but alas, the Index also compounds the confusion by listing entries alphabetically and then by offering, so we have Beekeepers, Bakeries, Candymakers, Chocolate Makers, Pastries, Biscuits, and Cakes, and Pastry Makers and Shops. Pity the person who is trying to recall where he/she had a nice pastry and coffee, followed by a gelato and perhaps a candy for the child!
Another cavil-- in the '98 edition, one entry includes this sentence: "By the time you visit,...may have completed their extension: the 'little shop' will be enlarged to add a tasting room 'for friends." That same sentence, verbatim, is also in the 2002 edition. Granted, renovations can take a little while in Italy, but I strongly suspect that the author simply neglected to revisit the shop in question, and revise her book accordingly!

If you are ONLY going to Tuscany, then this book may be of some use. If your travel plans include other regions of Italy (and they should), Faith Heller Willinger's "Eating in Italy" is far superior (though older) and there are several superior guides for serious enophiles.

Editorial Review:

The Food and Wine Lover s Companion to Tuscany, originally published in 1996, was one of the first guidebooks to focus exclusively on the traditional foods and local wines of this region-the most traveled-to area of Italy. This essential guide, now completely revised and incorporating over 40 new entries, is still the only book anyone needs to find the little-known shops, markets, festivals, and wineries that capture the spirit of Tuscany. Author Carla Capalbo, who makes her home in the region, passes on her extensive knowledge of Tuscan foods and wine, exploring each town, village, and quaint back road. No one considering a trip to Tuscany should leave home without this book.
