Editorial Review:

Politics has always been a dirty game.
Now justice is, too.

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst “cancer cluster” in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave readers unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

Editorial Review:

tres¥pass \'trespes\ n: a transgression of law involving one's obligations to God or to one's neighbor; a violation of moral law; an offense; a sin
-Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition, Unabridged

In what may be her most unsettling novel to date, Sue Grafton's T is for Trespass is also her most direct confrontation with the forces of evil. Beginning slowly with the day-to-day life of a private eye, Grafton suddenly shifts from the voice of Kinsey Millhone to that of Solana Rojas, introducing readers to a chilling sociopath. Rojas is not her birth name. It is an identity she cunningly stole, an identity that gives her access to private caregiving jobs. The true horror of the novel builds with excruciating tension as the reader foresees the awfulness that lies ahead. The suspense lies in whether Millhone will realize what is happening in time to intervene.

Though set in the late eighties, T is for Trespass could not be more topical: identity theft; elder abuse; betrayal of trust; the breakdown in the institutions charged with caring for the weak and the dependent. It reveals a terrifying but all-too-real rip in the social fabric. Once again, Grafton opens up new territory with startling results.

Editorial Review:

In her most eagerly anticipated novel yet, Elizabeth George brings back Scotland Yard's Thomas Lynley to investigate a ruthless crime.

After the senseless murder of his wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley retreated to Cornwall, where he has spent six solitary weeks hiking the bleak and rugged coastline. But no matter how far he walks, no matter how exhausting his days, the painful memories of Helen's death do not diminish.

On the forty-third day of his walk, at the base of a cliff, Lynley discovers the body of a young man who appears to have fallen to his death. The closest town, better known for its tourists and its surfing than its intrigue, seems an unlikely place for murder. However, it soon becomes apparent that a clever killer is indeed at work, and this time Lynley is not a detective but a witness and possibly a suspect.

The head of the vastly understaffed local police department needs Lynley's help, though, especially when it comes to the mysterious, secretive woman whose cottage lies not far from where the body was discovered. But can Lynley let go of the past long enough to solve a most devious and carefully planned crime?

Editorial Review:

Taking leave of his usual Chicago haunts, Archbishop John Blackwood Ryan travels to the south of Spain in this latest mystery by bestselling author Andrew M. Greeley. Ostensibly “Blackie” is in the historic city of Seville to attend a conference on American philosophy, but a far more critical assignment also requires his attention. The local cardinal has summoned the wily archbishop to Spain in hopes that Blackie can avert a murder before it happens.

The threat of violence hangs ominously over the regal palace of a family of wealthy Spanish aristocrats. Dona Teresa, a pious widow whose exotic beauty unsettles even Blackie, finds herself beset by avaricious relatives determined to control her life and fortune. A tangled web of obligations, traditions, and frustrated sexual desires binds the family together even as they bitterly contend against one another. With three generations of passionate nobility sharing the same roof, it seems only a matter of time before pride, greed, and lust leads to bloodshed.

But while the archbishop attempts to forestall a modern-day Spanish tragedy, dramatic events back in Chicago conspire to change his life forever. . . .

The Archbishop in Andalusia opens an exciting new chapter in the illustrious career of one of Andrew Greeley’s most beloved characters.

Another W E B Griffin Classic 4 out of 5 stars.

Another classic from WEB Griffin the masterr storyteller. This book is a great read and will be enjoyed by the Legion of Griffins loyal fans. As a reader of Griffins works for over twelve years, I look forward to the continued work with his son. I only hope that he will continue the tradition his father has established.

Thriller writer pens novel as substitute for Ambien 1 out of 5 stars.

Here's an almost philosophical question for you? What would happen if a thriller/suspense writer penned a novel that had absolutely NONE, ZERO, NADA, NYET suspense, thrills, and/or action (I'm not kidding) in it? Well, if it were the author's first book, then it would clearly be his/her last. If you W.E.B. Griffin, a good half of your audience will forgive you because you've done so darn well in the past. This book, however, should never have left the editor's office. Conversation should have gone something like: "Hey Griff, got your last rewrite of The Shooters and love the dialog." "What else did you think?" "Well to be honest Griff, that is where it stops... aside from the dialog, the story just sort of meanders all over the place... did you forget to put in the action scenes we talked about?" "uh, No... my audience doesn't need that stuff to enjoy my books..." "Griff, have you gone mad?! They'll crucify you... a Griffin book with no action... like having a football game without the players... it doesn't work Griff and I cannot in good conscience sign off on this manuscript. You've got to give me something I can publish." "Fair enough, I'll get back to you..." Alas, that clearly did Not happen so Griffin fans were stuck with one seriously lame book. Buy it as a substitute for Ambien. And then move on to something better.

In a dangerous world, only extraordinary people can keep America secure. The #1 New York Times-bestselling series returns with a story as up-to-date as the headlines.

Editorial Review:

The crackling new novel in the bestselling Honor Bound series by the #1 New York Times– bestselling master of the military thriller.

W.E. B. Griffin’s Honor Bound saga of World War II espionage in Germany and Argentina has long been immensely popular: “Enough derring-do, romance and action to satisfy Griffin’s legion of fans and bring him new ones” (Rocky Mountain News); “Cletus Frade’s services to his countries, his fealty to honor and his courage in the face of danger lift this thriller right off the bookshelf and onto the nightstand” (The Star-Ledger).

The year is 1943, and Argentina is officially neutral, but crawling with every kind of spy, sympathizer, and military official imaginable. The hero is Cletus Frade, a Marine pilot recruited by the OSS, with strong family ties to Argentina, and in Death and Honor—Griffin’s fourth book in the series and the first since 1999—he’s got a lot on his hands.

OSS chief Wild Bill Donovan has asked him to set up his own official-but-really-OSS airline in Argentina, using “loaned” Lockheed Lodestars and Constellations. Of even more concern are two interwoven German operations. The first is a government scheme for Jews outside the Fatherland to purchase the freedom of their relatives in concentration camps, who will then be transported to Argentina and Uruguay. The second has to do with where that money is going: a plan called Operation Phoenix, which will establish safe havens for senior Nazi officials in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Needless to say, the OSS is very interested in both of them, and if Frade can somehow find out a little more . . . without getting killed, that is. Which, as Frade is about to find out, is easier said than done.

Rich with the special flair that Griffin’s fans have long come to expect from him, Death and Honor is another “immensely entertaining adventure” (Kirkus Reviews) from one of our finest storytellers.

Legal Wrangling, Adventure, Sleaze, Redemption 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Grisham brings his page-turning style to a contested will. Aged billionaire Troy Phelan commits suicide, leaving behind a questionable hand-written will and angry heirs (six kids and three ex-wives) who get nothing beyond their debts erased. The beneficiary is Troy's previously unknown illegitimate daughter Rachel, who lives as a penniless missionary among the Indians somewhere in the vast wilderness of Brazil. Naturally, the greedy heirs and their unscrupulous lawyers contest the will (claiming Troy was insane), while the exector plucks an acoholic attorney (Nate) from rehab to seach for Rachel in Brazil. Grisham provides adventurous reading as Nate braves storms, floods, snakes, mosquito-borne diseases and hostile natives while traveling up the Pantanal River in search of Rachel. At the same time, we see how low the Phelan heirs and their sleazy lawyers will sink to grab part of that $11 billion estate. But lest you lose faith in human nature, some redemption is mixed in with the mounds of sleaze.

I like Grisham's page-turning style and legal adventurism, but felt finding Rachel was too easy, and he took too long to get to the tepid ending. Still, if this isn't the top Grisham effort, it still makes very good reading.

Editorial Review:

Heart of darkness...

In a plush Virginia office, a rich, angry old man is furiously rewriting his will. With his death just hours away, Troy Phelan wants to send a message to his children, his ex-wives, and his minions, a message that will touch off a vicious legal battle and transform dozens of lives.

Because Troy Phelan's new will names a sole surprise heir to his eleven-billion-dollar fortune: a mysterious woman named Rachel Lane, a missionary living deep in the jungles of Brazil.

Enter the lawyers. Nate O'Riley is fresh out of rehab, a disgraced corporate attorney handpicked for his last job: to find Rachel Lane at any cost. As Phelan's family circles like vultures in D.C., Nate is crashing through the Brazilian jungle, entering a world where money means nothing, where death is just one misstep away, and where a woman--pursued by enemies and friends alike--holds a stunning surprise of her own....

Editorial Review:

In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, who will kill him?

THE BEST 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. THEN AGAIN I LOVE ALL OF SUE GRAFTON BOOKS. ESPECIALLY HER KINSEY MILLHONE MYSTERIES. I CANT WAIT TILL SHE WRITES A NEW ONE. I GOT HOOKED FROM THE VERY BEGINING. AFTER I READ THEM I PASS THEM ON AND I ALWAYS GET A HEY THAT BOOK WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!

Editorial Review:

Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again.

In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.

But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.

Now, thirty-four years later, she wants the solace of closure.

In S is for Silence, Kinsey Millhone's nineteenth excursion into the world of suspense and misadventure, S is for surprises as Sue Grafton takes a whole new approach to telling the tale. And S is for superb: Kinsey and Grafton at their best.

Small Town Football 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you like small towns you'll like this book - if you like small towns and football you'll love this book. It's a quick, engaging read. It's a departure from Grisham's legal drama. Great book!

Bad reviewers are missing its merits. 5 out of 5 stars.

There are a couple of strong messages that I felt made it worth reading, even if you aren't crazy about high school sports.

Number one: It was a relief to find out that in spite of the brevity of high school, we all tend to needlessly dwell on a few negative events that seemed so ridiculously important at the time.

Number two: Having tough coaches (or band directors or teachers, etc.) is great for your character. If I hadn't had a few barking drill sargeants in my youth, I'd probably be sitting on the front porch of my mobile home on an upholstered couch, drinking a beer, smoking a cigarette, and collecting welfare.

Give Grisham a break. This was an interesting risk in his career and I think it was worth it.

Editorial Review:

Neely was once star quarterback for Messina High School's football team, but his playing days ended with an injury. For 15 years he's been trying to forget his past as sporting hero but has been unable to move on. That is until the man who moulded him, Coach Eddie Rake, reveals he's dying.
