Editorial Review:

When a simple case turns into a treacherous and politically charged investigation, Spenser faces his most difficult challenge yet-keeping his cool while his beloved Susan Silverman is in danger.

Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. The guy's aggressive yet wary, in the way men frightened for their marriages always are. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. A job's a job, after all.

Not surprisingly, Spenser catches Jordan with another man, tells Dennis what he's found out, and considers the case closed. But a couple of days later, all hell breaks loose, and three people are dead. This isn't just a marital affair gone bad. Spenser is in the middle of hornet's nest of trouble, and he's got to get out of it without getting stung. With Hawk watching his back, and gun-for- hire Vinnie Morris providing extra cover, Spenser delves into a complicated and far-reaching operation: Jordan's former lover, Perry Alderson, is the leader of a group that helps sponsor terrorists. But Perry doesn't like Spenser poking around his business, so he decides to get to Spenser through Susan. The Boston P.I. will use all his connections both above and below the law to uncover the truth behind Perry's antigovernment organization. But what Alderson doesn't realize is that Spenser will stop at absolutely nothing to keep Susan out of harm's way; nothing will keep him from the woman he loves.

A murder mystery but defiantly not in the thriller genre 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The actions and inter-actions of the authorities were not realistic as the Secret Service is responsible for protecting not for investigations. I can't imagine that a Secret Service agent just goes riding along with other authorities from time to time with no reporting back to or receiving directions from her office.

I skip-read the uninteresting romantic parts of the book except at the end. The great ending is what saved this book from being a three star or less.

Many of the reviews have said that this is his best book. I hope not as I have eleven more of his books on my desk waiting to be read.

Mistaken Identity 3 out of 5 stars.

For a long time, I've wanted this book for my James Patterson collection. I was very disappointed when I received it because it is a book club edition. All 36 of my other books by the author are the same size. It should have been clearly stated that this was not the regular hardback size. I would not have purchased it. I love Patterson's books because the clues in the mysteries are always hidden in plain sight. I should have read the books measurements and I would not have mistaken this book for the one I wanted. It was a case of mistaken identity.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times–bestselling author’s richly imagined work of historical fiction: a powerful tale of the Old West from the acknowledged master of crime fiction.

I had an eight-gauge shotgun that I’d taken with me when I left Wells Fargo. It didn’t take too long for things to develop. I sat in the tall lookout chair in the back of the saloon with the shotgun in my lap for two peaceful nights. On my third night it was different. I could almost smell trouble beginning to cook . . . .”

After the bloody confrontation in Appaloosa, Everett Hitch heads into the afternoon sun and ends up in Resolution, an Old West town so new the dust has yet to settle. It’s the kind of town that doesn’t have much in the way of commerce, except for a handful of saloons and some houses of ill repute. Hitch takes a job as lookout at Amos Wolfson’s Blackfoot Saloon and quickly establishes his position as protector of the ladies who work the backrooms—as well as a man unafraid to stand up to the enforcer sent down from the O’Malley copper mine.

Though Hitch makes short work of hired gun Koy Wickman, tensions continue to mount, so that even the self-assured Hitch is relieved by the arrival in town of his friend Virgil Cole. When greedy mine owner Eamon O’Malley threatens the loose coalition of local ranchers and starts buying up Resolution’s few businesses, Hitch and Cole find themselves in the middle of a makeshift war between O’Malley’s men and the ranchers. In a place where law and order don’t exist, Hitch and Cole must make their own, guided by their sense of duty, honor, and friendship.

Appaloosa 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is enjoyable for the Western book fan. Robert B. Parker captures the period as if he time-traveled from there. Men were men, a no nonsense approach to life. This is the perfect western, second only to Gunman's Rhapsody, another book of his.

Eye Candy 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This easy reading book made a recent trans-ocean flight fly by (no pun intended). Falls into my "Eye Candy" category. Easy to read, occupies a few hours and no expectations for great lit, but decent writing. Great book for vacation reading.

The Western Returns! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Appaloosa" Reminds you of those Saturday Matinees with Randolph Scott shooting it out with the bad guys in the Saloon and the Good Guy gets the girl. Yet it's not all black and white. The good guys have flaws as well, it makes them human.

Parker puts good and bad on a western canvas colored with frailty.

Editorial Review:

A New York Times Bestselling Author

This is a richly imagined novel of the Old West, as spare and vivid as a high plains sunset, from "one of the world's most talented performers" (The San Diego Union-Tribune).

Editorial Review:

Fans of James Patterson's resourceful cop Alex Cross will be relievedto find that he's back on familiar territory with Violets Are Blue--and,more importantly, that this is one of the best Alex Cross thrillers yet.The malign criminal genius of Roses Are Red is fixing to giveAlex a hard time once again. The FBI joins Patterson's dogged cop in aparticularly unsettling investigation: two San Francisco joggers have beenviciously murdered and are found suspended by their feet, with all the blooddrained from their corpses. And when further brutal deaths follow in Californiaand on the East Coast, Alex is forced to contemplate the bizarre possibility ofmodern-day vampires, although his instincts point him to one of the manysinister religious cults that flourish on the West Coast. Aided by JamillaHughes, a streetwise young woman detective from San Francisco, Alex finds thathe has to crack not one but two impenetrable mysteries to stop furtherbloodletting.Patterson fans expect the extremely concise, page-turning chapters (116 of themhere!), along with a reluctance to dawdle over details of his hero's personallife, and both characteristics are firmly back in place. If you can resistreading this one in just a few sittings, you deserve some kind of a thrillerreader's medal. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk

Wost James Patterson Book I've ever read 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is awful. I made myself finish the book because I thought it might get better. No, it was still horrible. I can't believe that James Patterson's name is on this piece of garbage.

Warning: take the book title seriously 2 out of 5 stars.

While waiting for her chance to hit it big, aspiring photographer Kristin Burns makes ends meet by working as a nanny to two delightful children who has the misfortune of having the clichéd cold and uncaring stepmother. Kristin dreams of one day having her photographs displayed at a gallery and continues to snap photos of every day New Yorker capturing those special moment. One day, she awakens from a horrifying nightmare with scenes so vivid that they leave her bones chilled. Grateful that it was only a dream, she goes on with her daily routine and takes the same route to work. However, when she stumbles upon the same scene that she dreamt about, Kristin's life is forever altered. The pictures she's taken of people appear transparent; some of them depict the subjects in a most gruesome state - brutally murdered. When she thought life couldn't get any worse, she starts to see ghosts of people from her past. As the line between dream and reality becomes muddy, Kristin feels like she is going mad, unable to decipher the meaning of the strange things happening to her. What is the meaning of her father's warnings? Why is a mysterious stranger stalking her? Dare she heed their warnings?

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED is a creepy thriller spun out from James Patterson's writing machine. Patterson deviates from his usual crime thriller. This book has elements of paranormal, psychological and a dash of erotica. Kristin is plagued by the same chilling dreams. Her torrid affair with the man of her dreams is beginning to unravel. As we see her world spin out of control, we see this naïve aspiring photographer turn into a stalker herself as she develops an obsession over the family she's working for. However, what started off as an intriguing novel quickly became a weird and incoherent tale which, just like Kristin, left me struggling to separate dream from reality. Add the inexplicable supernatural/paranormal aspect and what we have is one messy, convoluted plot that failed to make sense. Unfortunately, Patterson's trademark short chapters fail to provide the profundity necessary for this type of plot to truly excel. In the end, what started off as an interesting premise was ruined by a tortuous plot that failed to achieve a satisfying conclusion. Two stars for those two adorable kids.

Editorial Review:

Kristin Burns is making her way in New York City. Her photos are being considered at a major Manhattan gallery, she works by day with two wonderful children, and the man of her dreams is almost hers for keeps. But just as everything she's ever wanted is finally within reach, her life changes forever--with one murderous nightmare. Kristin wakes up every morning from the same chilling, unforgettable dream. And suddenly, it's visiting her during the day too. As her life turns stranger by the minute, Kristin is haunted and terrified. Is it all in her head? Or is the nightmare becoming her life? Kristin searches desperately for what's real through the lens of her camera, only knowing two things for sure: that no place is safe and the fate of everyone she loves lies in her hands.

First in the Women's Murder Club series 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First book in the Women's Murder Club series.

Four professional women in San Francisco (a cop, a medical examiner, an assistant DA, and a reporter) join forces to catch a serial killer who is brutally murdering newlyweds.

Lots of page-turning action and Patterson's trademark gruesome, misogynistic murders. Read this for the gory murder mystery, not for the character development. While I didn't love it, I liked it enough that I will continue to read the series.

Editorial Review:

Imagine a killer who thinks, "What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?"--and then goes far beyond it. Now imagine four women --a police detective, an assistant DA, a reporter, and a medical examiner --who join forces as they sidestep their bosses to track down criminals. Known as the Women's Murder Club, they are pursuing a murderer whose twisted imagination has stunned an entire city. Their chief suspect is a socially prominent writer, but the men in charge won't touch him. On the trail of the most terrifying and unexpected killer ever, they discover a shocking surprise that turns everything about the case upside down.

Editorial Review:

Roses Are Red, James Patterson's sixth Alex Cross thriller, openswith the District of Columbia detective attempting to mend his nearly unraveledfamily. The year-long kidnapping of one's intended (1999's Pop Goes the Weasel) will dothat to a relationship. Christine, the kidnappee, is amenable with onereasonable condition: that her family's horizon remain uncluttered by homicidalmaniacs. How unfortunate, then, that the joyous christening of their newborn sonis rudely interrupted by the FBI bearing news of several heinous murdersrequiring the attention of detective (and doctor of psychology) Cross."Three-year-old boy, the father, a nanny," Kyle said one more timebefore he left the party. He was about to go through the door in the sun porchwhen he turned to me and said, "You're the right person for this. They murdereda family, Alex."As soon as Kyle was gone, I went looking for Christine. My heart sank. She hadtaken Alex and left without saying good-bye, without a single word.Which leaves Cross free to hunt the Mastermind, the barbarous brains behind awidening series of bank robberies in which employees or their family members areheld hostage and, when instructions aren't followed to the finest iota, slaughtered. Given the cases' glaring and unfathomable inhumanity, Cross's long- time DCPD partner (the wonderful giant, John Sampson) gives way to the warm, attractive, and fiercely intelligent FBI Agent Betsey Cavalierre. The longer and harder Cross and Cavalierre remain on his trail, the bolder andmore brutal--and shiveringly close to home--the Mastermind's strikes become. And, thanks mostly to lightning-short paragraphs and a point of view thatrappels from the first-person Cross to the third-person Mastermind, the taleprogresses at hot-trot speed to a bona fide doozy of a denouement. It'll be overbefore you know it, so sit back, hold your breath, and enjoy the show. And staytuned for the next one. --Michael Hudson
