This "best seller" had no ending 1 out of 5 stars.

I think Patterson needs to take a vacation then return and write the way he did in Kiss the Girls which was the first Patterson book that I read.

Cross as an FBI agent is in the loop, then out of the loop, etc. etc. without any explanation of why or who is doing it. You have to suspend your disbelieve as things just do not happen this way even with the worst of investigations. Wolf, the master villain, is unstoppable but never any explanation of how he does all the things during the story. He breaks every bone in a prisoner's body in the middle of a maximum security facility with no explanation of how it is done; just that the prisoner is found the next morning.

Can you believe that Wolf drives by in a limo and takes a shot at the FBI and their prisoner and then the chapter ends and nothing is ever said about the shooting, a chase, road blocks, etc.

This is another "best selling book" that should have been 200 pages that was stretched into 390 pages with generous margins and 117 chapter breakes generating a lot of white space.

There were so many unexplained actions through out the book that I was not surprised that the end of the book had no ending. By this time I didn't care who the Wolf was or who his FBI "mole" was, guess those items and more will be in the next book.

Editorial Review:

Alex Cross' family is in terrible danger--at the same time that his new job with the FBI brings him the scariest case of his career. A team of kidnappers has been snatching successful, upstanding men and women right before their families' eyes--possibly to sell them into slavery. Alex's knowledge of the D.C. streets, together with his unique insights into criminal psychology, make this mindbending case one that only he can solve--if he can just get his colleagues to set aside their staid and outdated methods. With unexpected twists and whiplash surprises, this is another brilliantly irresistible novel from America's bestselling suspense writer.

Not Worth It 2 out of 5 stars.

James Patterson has been writing thriller novels since the 1970s, but didn't become a big success until 1990, when he wrote a novel entitled ALONG CAME A SPIDER featuring a character named Alex Cross. Now he's the biggest thriller writer in existence. I like Patterson's stories, but I don't think his pre-1990 novels are worth reading.

THE MIDNIGHT CLUB is an example of why. It comes across as a pretty mediocre novel, especially if you've read a lot of thriller fiction. The characters are quite flat, and the plot is pretty predictable and filled with silly cliches. The romance, in particular, is not the least bit believable. Unlike Patterson's later novels, this book is also pretty slow paced and overwritten in sections. I found it a chore to read.

I think THE MIDNIGHT CLUB is for Patterson completists only. If you're new to his work, my advice is to try KISS THE GIRLS, 1ST TO DIE, THE QUICKIE, or JUDGE & JURY. Those novels are far more entertaining than what I found here.

Editorial Review:

Anne Perry’s Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries are perhaps the best loved of all her Victorian bestsellers, luring us into the multilayered richness of London, from the great mansions and secluded drawing rooms to the city’s festering slums. Now, in her most mesmerizing novel yet, she invites us to a house-party at Buckingham Palace.

The Prince of Wales has asked four wealthy entrepreneurs and their wives to the palace to discuss a fantastic idea: the construction of a six-thousand-mile railroad that would stretch the full length of Africa. But, alas, the prince’s gathering proves disastrous when the mutilated body of a prostitute hired for a late-night frolic (after the wives have retired to bed) turns up among the queen’s monogrammed sheets in a palace linen closet.

With great haste, Thomas Pitt, brilliant mainstay of Special Services, is summoned to resolve the crisis. The Pitts’ cockney maid, Gracie, is also recruited–to pose as a palace servant and listen in on the guests’ conversations, scan their bedrooms, and scrutinize their troubled faces for clues to hidden rivalries and attachments that could have lead to murder. If Pitt and Gracie fail to find out who brutally murdered the young woman–as seems increasingly likely–Pitt’s career will be over, and the scandal may just cause the monarchy to fall.

With a cast of wonderful characters, among them the gentle Princess of Wales, and a twisting plot that takes us into the hidden world of the royal family, Anne Perry probes deeply the hearts of men and women ensnared by their own emotions. Never has this distinguished novelist told a story with more truth and passion.

Bestselling author James Patterson returns with the #1 blockbuster thriller of the summer, an unstoppable novel of law and revenge.

Senior FBI agent Nick Pellisante is closing in on the notorious mob boss "The Electrician," when the scheduled sting goes spectacularly awry. Two FBI agents are dead, the boss is wounded, and Pellisante vows the Electrician's next move will be from a jail cell.

Andie Echeverra, a part-time actress and a single, full-time mom, is assigned her next role as Juror #11 in the landmark trial against Mafia Don Dominic Cavello. Everybody is on edge. No one has ever crossed the man whose orders have made entire families disappear.

Though Cavello's influence extends across blue uniforms and black robes, the case should be open-and-shut. But the legal system fails with devastating results, and Nick and Andie are the only ones left to seek justice. To stop the Electrician, they must take matters into their own hands. They are the judge and jury now.

James Patterson spins an all-out heart-pounding legal thriller that pits two people against the most vicious and powerful mobster since John Gotti.

Yuck 1 out of 5 stars.

What happened to RBP? He used to write good books - this one is just a mess. (Speaking of which, isn't Jenn a little OLD to be modeling? Gotta be in her 40's, right?) It's not so much a mystery as an excuse to whine over Jesse's ex-wife. Do any of these man have a backbone at all? Talk about women leading them around by there...noses. They reminded me of women who are beaten by men again and again, but they never leave. Why? "Because I LOVE him." Gag, puke. I have zero respect for Jesse.

The mystery was way too easy to figure out. All of the characters speak in the same voice! Try to delinate a bit, Parker, it would make for much more interesting characters. Of course that would take a little thought and work. Also, what's with all the illiteratve character names? How amature is that? I've known, I think, three people in my entire life that have illiterative names - the are NOT that common.

Never again will I waste time on a Parker book. Perhaps if we all stop buying these poor excuses for a novel, he'll get back on track and write a good book for a change.
