I am a huge James Patterson fan. He writes great, snappy books; vivid yarns, fun characters and great dialog . But if "Black Friday" had been the first book of his I'd read, I'd have never picked up an other one.

We should all be very happy that Patterson has learned from his early efforts. Indeed, were I he, I'd pay my publisher to recall and burn every copy. It's that awful.

If you have any grasp of reality and want to remain a Patterson fan, DO NOT READ IT! (I have given it one star because no star is not an option.)

The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene is a great mystery book. All the characters are fit for the story. This is perfect for anyone who enjoys solving problems and coming up with solutions. An amazing storyline, and until the end it will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I always liked the Hardy Boys better than Nancy Drew, which is perhaps not too surprising. The whole team adventure thing there is probably a bit more interesting, and perhaps a bit more freedome given to the young lads than Nancy, anyway.

Other than that, a pretty garden variety kids mystery story. With these books, the title does actually have something to do with it.

Our bookclub read this and the majority of the people thought it was an excellent read. The reviewer added a great deal by sharing her experiences at the location of the story in Egypt. I was fascinated by the main character and her bravado as a woman diuring the Victorian era. I am ready to read some of the books that follow in this first in a series of eighteen. I found it hard to put down, a few folks in our group didn't find it that interesting. Worth my time!

A delightful, entertaining, well written novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Don't expect a terrible lot of plot twists that aren't obvious to the reader far before being pointed out in the prose, but the characterizations and narrative make up for the lack of intrigue.

Featuring intelligent heroines, well-researched Egyptology and a smattering of romance the action paced well and I never bored of the writing or skipped passages to hurry it along. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Teens Reveal the Truth behind a Puzzling Death 5 out of 5 stars.

What would Spenser and Susan Silverman have been like as a teenage couple? It's possible they might have sounded and acted a great deal like Terry Novak and his friend, Abby. That link in characterization gives this book extra fascination for adult fans of Robert B. Parker. I particularly enjoyed the innuendo in the dialog where Terry and Abby refer to their physical desire for one another in flirting, boy-girl terms.

The mystery isn't all that mysterious; the main mystery is how two high school students will be able to bring out the truth: A high school student is found dead and most adults presume it was suicide related to using steroids. Terry doesn't believe it and starts asking around.

His detection is interspaced with boxing lessons from his fifty-five year-old friend, George. There's a bullying jock at the high school who tries to stop Terry, but Terry jabs on. In the background are some greedy adults looking out for themselves at the expense of everyone else.

I would have loved to read this book when I was a young teen. I also loved it as a 61-year-old man. I suspect the appeal wouldn't be as great for those in the 25-45 age range.

I look forward to reading other books for younger readers by Mr. Parker.

For sheer mystery and excitement," The Woman in White ", was unmatched in the genre of 19th century literature. That is what one must keep in mind when reading this extraordinary novel. Written in 1860, nothing approaching it had ever been attempted, and if the New York Times best seller list had been in existence at the time, it would have topped the list for countless numbers of weeks. Like many authors of the period, the book was serialized, and it was followed voraciously by tens of thousands of readers. It continued to remain popular when published in book form. For those who relish an intricate plot, serendipitous chance coincidences filled with its share of villains, heroes, and fragile heroines in distress, along with a modicum of amateur detective work, then this is the novel that will entertain and satisfy those who are avid readers of the likes of Dickens, Conan Doyle, and Thackeray.

I've read nearly all the Spenser novels, and this is definitely one of the weaker ones.

HUNDRED-DOLLAR BABY re-introduces April Kyle, the high-class prostitute last seen in TAMING A SEA HORSE. Kyle has never been a particularly likable character, although Spenser does see her as something of a daughter figure due to her very difficult past. Anyway, Kyle is in trouble again, and Spenser investigates on her behalf, only to find out that her motives may be less than pure.

The plot of HUNDRED DOLLAR BABY is sluggish, and I didn't find it very suspenseful or involving. This is one of those stories where it's hard to find someone to root for. It's not hard to figure out how the story will end, although I do give Parker credit for an unsentimental finish. This is definitely not the best Spenser book to start with, since it features a multitude of characters that were first introduced in earlier books.

This book was okay, but I doubt most casual readers would like it. My advice is to skip this novel unless you're a hard core Spenser fan.
