Editorial Review:

One night at Elaine’s, Stone Barrington—back in Manhattan after chasing down the bad guys in the Caribbean—meets Barton Cabot, older brother of his sometime ally, CIA boss Lance Cabot. Barton’s career in army intelligence is even more top secret than his brother’s, but he’s suffering from amnesia following a random act of violence. Amnesia is a dangerous thing in a man whose memory is chockfull of state secrets, so Lance hires Stone to watch Barton’s back. As Stone discovers, Barton is a spy with a rather unusual hobby: building and restoring antique furniture. The genteel world of antiques and coin dealers at first seems a far cry from Stone’s usual underworld of mobsters, murderers, and spies. But Barton also is a man with a past, and one event in particular— in the jungles of Vietnam more than thirty years earlier— is coming back to haunt his present in ways he’d never expected. Stone soon finds out that Barton, and some shady characters of his acquaintance, may be hiding a lot more than just a few forged antiques.

Editorial Review:

New York Times– bestselling author Stuart Woods returns with another page-turning thriller.

President Will Lee is having a rough week. His vice president just died during surgery. Confirmation hearings for the new vice president are under way, but the squeaky-clean governor whom Will has nominated may have a few previously unnoticed skeletons in his closet. And Teddy Fay, the rogue CIA agent last seen in Shoot Him If He Runs, is plotting his revenge on CIA director Kate Rule Lee—the president’s wife.

Plus there are some loose nukes in Pakistan that might just trigger World War III if Will’s diplomatic efforts fall short. It’s up to President Lee—with some help from Holly Barker, Lance Cabot, and a few other Stuart Woods series regulars—to save the world, and the upcoming election.

An exciting story even if a bit far fetched 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a true Stuart Woods fan and read all of his books. This is no exception, in my opinion, to a fun, exciting read. I lost a night of sleep so I could find out how it would end. Sure, much of the plot---everyone having a pilot's license and carrying a gun----is a bit far fetched. But reading an exciting story allows you to escape what is real and live in that fantasy world for the length of the book.
This story carries you away into another world-----where people are shot, people are millionaires, and convicts run to Mexico to escape. And it includes the bad guy getting caught and the good guy once again being able to enjoy his millions, women and booze.
What's not to enjoy-------just escape for awhile and enjoy the story.

Woods is Back on Track 5 out of 5 stars.

Stuart Woods is back on track with his writing. For a while there he was writing short novels that really seemed kind of weird. Santa Fe Dead is a sequel to Santa Fe Rules. I suggest that you read Santa Fe Rules first so that you will be familiar with the characters. The character Ed Eagle who is an attorney is one of Woods best. He has had major problems with his ex wife, who is a gold-digger with a grudge. You will really enjoy reading this one. I had a hard time putting it down.

Keep It To Yourself 1 out of 5 stars.

I have enjoyed several of Mr. Woods books and especially enjoy the Stone Barrington series. On page four of this book the Dino character fires a cheap shot at President Bush. I say put a sock in it! P.S. One star is my rating of the cheap shot...I'll keep reading this book but may not buy any others. I've done that with other authors.

It Is What Is Expected 4 out of 5 stars.

When you open (or listen to) a Stone Barrington novel you get what you always get: a lawyer/private eye character who is ultra suave, yet self-effacing, who lives a life somewhat like James Bonds, with fancy restaurants, houses and women at the drop of the hat. There is also a good plot and two very good side-kicks - Dino, he police lieutenant, and Joan, the "Gal Friday".

This is the proto-typical Barrington novel. There are a few plots going onL: one with a ne'er-do-well client, Herbie Fisher, who always just eludes murder; a crazed stalker who arranges the rapes and murders of beautiful women; and the divorce of a wealthy lawyer who has ties to the mob. The plots are good and the ones with Herbie Fisher and the divorce lend humor.

These novels are unpretentious. THere is no attempt to make them anything they are not. They are meant to be read, enjoyed and passed on to the next person lying on the beach. This one is good romp as Stone romps from plot to plot and bedroom to bedroom. A bit formulaic, but the formula is light and enjoyable.

A note on the audio: It is terrific and the reader has voices of Stone and Dino down pat.

Ho-Hum Non-Thriller 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is my first Woods book and it'll be my last. The characters here are wooden and the plot so linear and predictible. And the ending is unsatisfying, leaving the reader to ask "Is That All There Is?" Barrington and company don't seem like very nice people and they can't seem to decide if they are on this Caribbean island to find someone or if they just want to drink and make whoopee. Also, there's a political undertone I find unpleasant. On one page the author takes a gratuitous swipe at President Bush as allegedly favoring torture, while on another page Woods' characters seem to blithely countenance assassination as a worthy activity. In Woods' mind: torture bad, assassination good. Nah, this book just doesn't cut it, for more than a few reasons.

Quick read, typical of the more recent books in this series 3 out of 5 stars.

Stone Barrington joins forces with Holly Barker to help run down a criminal mastermind who is driving the CIA crazy. In the process of tracking this criminal down, Stone, Dino and Holly find themselves back on St. Marks (which Stone previously visited in Dead in the Water: A Novel). However, behind the beautiful scenery and the tourist attractions, there are also to be found more than a few American expatriates with something to hide, as well as a corrupt system of politicians that are running the place. As they stalk their prey, they find that more than one person on St. Marks has a reason to want to hide - and that maybe the person they are seeking is right in front of them.

It seems rather ludicrous to call this one a Stone Barrington novel, as it features Holly Barker just as much. I think it is probably time for Woods to stop writing individual stories and just go with the melding of all his worlds into one. However, this is a nice book for a quick read - a good book to read on a plane, or while sitting on a lovely sunny beach. It's brain candy, but it doesn't taste too bad.

A lot of fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In this Stuart Woods' book, we find Stone Barrington in his first outing. He is a Lt. Detective on limited duty due to a bullet he took to his knee and has decided after an evening out to walk home in order to get some exercise to it when, in a case of being in either the right place at the right time, or wrong place at the wrong time, he witnesses a woman falling from a building. It turns out to be a rather famous TV personality who was scheduled to take her place as a co-anchor on a prestigious network the next night. When he arrives at her apartment he hears someone leaving it rapidly, but when he gives chase his knee gives out and he loses the person he was chasing. However, what is set up to be a relatively open-and-shut homicide case is quickly muddied by the arrival of a freelance journalist who got footage of her at the scene showing that she was still alive when put in the ambulance, by her diary that shows that she was severely depressed at times, and then by her disappearance - no body, no crime. Barrington's obsession with finding out the truth in this case, as opposed to just finding someone to stick with the crime, quickly puts him at odds with the rest of the department (with whom he never fit in all that well to begin with) and he soon finds himself railroaded out on a medical disability retirement. However, he has a background in law and decides to take the bar exam and set himself up that way. The twists just keep on coming as taxi drivers start getting murdered around the city, and Barrington begins to get notes purportedly from the missing star.

I started to read these books out of order when I picked up "Reckless Abandon" and then "Two Dollar Bill," then I decided to hold off until I put my hands on all of them and start at the beginning; I'm glad I have, because I can now look forward to a long line of these most excellent thrillers. Woods knows how to put together a great mystery and keep it exciting!

Editorial Review:

Everyone is always telling Stone Barrington that he's too smart to be a cop, but it's pure luck that places him on the streets in the dead of night, just in time to witness the horrifying incident that turns his life inside out.

Suddenly he is on the front page of every New York newspaper, and his life is hopelessly entwined in the increasingly shocking life (and perhaps death) of Sasha Nijinsky, the country's hottest and most beautiful television anchorwoman.

No matter where he turns, the case is waiting for him, haunting his nights and turning his days into a living hell. Stone finds himself caught in a perilous web of unspeakable crimes, dangerous friends, and sexual depravity that has throughout it one common thread: Sasha.

Shallow 'Water' 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Stuart Woods' gifts as a writer are primarily in storytelling. His writing style isn't particularly exceptional and his characters are woefully one-dimensional, but he can spin a tale that'll keep you turning the pages. His Stone Barrington series is sort of the literary equivalent of an enjoyable-but-mediocre TV detective series. With "Dead in the Water," though, he drowns his story in bland dialog and meaningless detail (glad I'm not the only one annoyed that Woods chronicles the making of a Caesar salad, which was slightly more exciting than Stone Barrington's adventures in an earlier chapter making linguine and clam sauce). Though the state of journalism has declined to a degree that I could believe reporters could be goaded by a PR firm into flocking to an island resort to cover the plight of a rich housewife, the journalists in "Water" are never believable as journalists. Or as people. In fact, it's hard to believe any of the people in "Water," with all the characters shallow and broadly drawn. I never pick up a Woods novel with high expectations, but "Dead in the Water" leaves readers splashing around in a wading pool.

Editorial Review:

In Dead in the Water, Stone has barely arrived in St. Marks, a lovely Caribbean island nation, on a sailing vacation when something very strange happens: A beautiful young woman sails into the harbor, entirely alone on a large yacht. Before long she is under the intense scrutiny of local authorities in the very considerable person ofSir Winston Sutherland, the minister of Justice. The problem is, though she arrived alone, she had departed the other side of the Atlantic in the company of her husband, a well-known writer, who is no longer in evidence.

Evidence is what fascinates Stone Barrington, and before many pages have been turned, he is all that stands between the apparently innocent Allison Manning and the patently evil intent of Sir Winston, whose motives are unclear. What is clear is that the St. Marks' system of justice bears little resemblance to the American courts to which Stone is accustomed and that his smallest error could prove fatal to his client.

Not even worthy of being called Dirt 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My first Stuart Woods book and I'm not likely to pick up another. Not a likeable character to be found other than the domestic help. I didn't care what happened to anyone.

What a hoot! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a hoot and a half to read - a vicious gossip-monger who has always been careful to keep her own dirty laundry hidden finds out she hasn't done as good a job as she would like and finds the tables turned. She turns to Stone Barrington to get help. As things progress, more and more of the high and mighty find themselves being drug through the mud. I had lots of good laughs in this, and of course the suspense was great as well. The twists and turns were everything you would expect out of Stuart Woods and more and the mystery plotting was tight. Expect some pins and needles, because you're not going to want to put it down - you'll sit right where you are until you're finished!

Editorial Review:

Woods seems to write smooth and solid thrillers as fast as most of us read them. Cop-turned-lawyer Stone Barrington of New York Dead returns with all his street smarts intact in this story about a powerful gossipmonger who has the tables turned when dirty pictures of her start appearing on fax machines across the country. The characters are so rich, famous, and upscale that you might get a nosebleed, but Woods has a light, deft touch that makes the book hard to resist.

I've sometimes wondered about 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Stone Barrington's soul. I've read most of the books in this series, and sometimes, Stone decisions are right on the ethical/moral edge; especially the ones dealing with Arrington, the love of his life.

However, in DIRTY WORK, Stone's sense of right and wrong shows up early and stays through the last line. I loved the contrast between Felicity Carpenter's English approach and Stone's ethically correct rationale in dealing with a deadly and very smart assassin.

No spoilers here, but the ending was rather sad to me. However, Stone's moral compass was not bent or broken and it will live to serve him again.

Good riddance to Ms. Carpenter. Hope she stays on her side of the pond. :)

Than you, Mr. Woods, for diving below the surface.

Enjoy!

A Thin Blue Line of Humor 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has its moments of classic Wambaugh police humor, and politically correct it is not. Having said that, it is nowhere near the epic police novels that were "The Blue Knight" or "The New Centurions." Hollywood Station is more a collection of funny cop stories, most no doubt (partially) true, than a tight novel. In fact, the plot does not even begin to roll out until well into the second half of the book. I grew up on Wambaugh and his early novels (as well as "The Onion Field") had an impact on who I am today. But this book did not measure up.

Editorial Review:

A #1 New York Times bestselling author, Joseph Wambaugh invented the modern police procedural thriller. Now in his long-awaited return to the LAPD, he deploys his bone-deep understanding of cops' lives--and a lethal sense of humor--in a stunning new novel.

For a cop, a night on the job means killing time and trying not to get killed. If you're in Hollywood Division, it also means dealing with some of the most desperate criminals anywhere. Now the violent robbery of a Hollywood jewelry store quickly connects to a Russian nightclub and an undercover operation gone wrong, and the sergeant they call the Oracle and his squad of quirky cops have to make sense of it all. From an officer who dreams of stardom, to a single mother packing a breast pump, to partners who'd rather be surfing, they'll take you on a raucous ride through a gritty city where no one is safe. Especially not the cops.
