Editorial Review:

In this latest entry in Barbara Parker's series featuring lawyers Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana, Gail gets guilt-tripped by an old family retainer into taking on a case everyone else warns her is not winnable, including her boyfriend, criminal attorney Anthony. But Gail, whose legal practice is primarily civil, nevertheless agrees to represent death-row inmate Kenny Ray Clark, scheduled to die by lethal injection in less than a month. Before she's even read the trial transcript, Gail is convinced Kenny Ray didn't stab Amber Dodson to death. Once she does read it, she's even more certain that he was done in by shoddy police work and poor lawyering, if nothing else.

Gail's no slouch at doing some guilt-tripping herself. She tells her besotted sweetheart that if he really loved her he'd help with Kenny Ray's appeal, and she's not above a little sexual teasing to make her point. Anthony agrees to help, which is lucky since Gail seesaws wildly from being confident she can keep Kenny from his date with the executioner to dissolving in tears when she's certain she can't.

The real culprit is clear from the outset--it's up to Gail and Anthony to get the goods on him. Most of the heat in this thriller comes from the couple's occasional clinches and the steamy Florida weather. Anthony Quintana, Gail's complex, sexy, Cuban-American boyfriend, gets a bit more ink than usual in this outing. That will delight fans who find him as fascinating as Connor. Unfortunately, freeing an innocent man from a date with the death chamber doesn't allow enough time for Anthony to carry out his plan to accompany his ailing grandfather back to the island of his birth; fans of the series will have to wait for the next book to find out what happens when he does. --Jane Adams

Editorial Review:

Bobby Gonzales, a promising young dancer with the Miami ballet, is the only suspect in the murder of Roger Cresswell, whose family has been building yachts for wealthy Floridians for two decades. Bobby is also the secret boyfriend of Angela Quintana, whose father Anthony, a successful criminal attorney, is having trouble letting go of the two main women in his life: his daughter and his former fiancée, Gail Connor. Angela asks Gail to help her clear Bobby; Gail is torn, knowing her participation will bring her face to face with the man she still loves.

Roger is the second Cresswell to die violently; his sister, a talented artist who was the wife of Anthony Quintana's client, took her life at the height of her fame. Those facts seem like more than coincidence to Gail, whose efforts to unravel the family secrets that seem to be at the core of the Cresswell deaths are complicated by her fondness for Angela, her belief in Bobby's innocence, and a surprising secret of her own.

Suspicion of Malice is as much a love story as a murder mystery, but Parker invests her plot with enough stylish touches to keep the momentum going. She excels at characterization--Gail's emotional depths and conflicted feelings are well explicated, Anthony's old-world machismo and modern vulnerabilities sympathetically portrayed, and the secondary players, especially Gail's mother and Anthony's grandfather, clearly and convincingly drawn. As in previous outings (Suspicion of Deceit, Suspicion of Betrayal), Parker has used the sexual tension between Gail and Anthony as they collaborate in crime-solving to good effect; how the events in their relationship that drive this thriller to its violent conclusion will affect their professional as well as personal affairs awaits a future installment. --Jane Adams

Tense and Frenetic! 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This latest in Ms Parker's books is her tribute to her Cuban sympathies. Anthony and Gail take his and her children and her mother for a visit to Anthony's Cuban father and sister. Interesting tidbits here and there. Cuba is on the verge of change; Fidel Castro is almost 80. It will be interesting.

The story was, as usual. one tense moment after another. Anthony and Gail are typical lawyers: She has to know every little detail and he lies like a rug!!!!

I think Ms Parker caught the Latin emotions (and they are volatile) well. It's hard to put the book down. But I am hoping her next "Suspicion of......" will take place back home.

Editorial Review:

With Cuba as a sizzling setting and a provocative murder that hits close to home, New York Times bestselling author Barbara Parker delivers her most unpredictable novel to date. Married Miami lawyers Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana travel to Cuba to see the island that still captures Anthony's heart. But the trip is anything but nostalgic as Gail and Anthony face violence, murder, a terrorist threat, and a past love that could tear them apart.

A great suspense novel 5 out of 5 stars.

From the first page to the last, this was a real suspense book. Without giving too much of the story away, it's about a high-class lawyer who lives alone with her daughter. She then started to get these weird and threatening phone calls, which then turned into things that were far more serious. As the story goes on, twists and turns await the reader, and blood is spilled and fingers are pointed. There isn't much else to say about this book other than the fact that Barbara Parker is a genious when it comes to writing suspense novels. Be sure to check out her other novels!

Editorial Review:

Attorney Gail Connor is on top of the world. She's engaged to the man of her dreams, criminal lawyer Anthony Quintana; they've bought the house of their dreams in beautiful Coral Gables; and Gail finally has her dream job-- her own private law practice. But then her 11-year-old daughter Karen starts receiving odd, hangup phone calls and creepy notes and photos in the mail. Could it be Gail's jealous ex-husband Dave? A disgruntled former client? Someone from Anthony's shadowy past? While Anthony and Dave clash violently over how to protect Gail's daughter, the stalker closes in. Then Karen is abducted, and Gail's world is shattered. Nothing matters now-- not her success, her wedding, her new home, her new practice-- not without her daughter. As they track Karen's tormentor, they must walk that dangerous line between action and caution, and deliver justice without fail...and without mercy.

disappointing 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am a fan of this series and will continue to be.

But this story lacked tightness. It was spread too thin with too much going on. Not enough tension. The plot seemed tired, as if she threw in characters just to fill the space.

But I still can't wait for the next one. I am sure the next one will be better.

Not Up To Par 3 out of 5 stars.

A lot of twists and turns, and a good ending...but not enough to save this one.

For one thing, there were too many "zany" characters, which made it nearly impossible to find any kind of entertainment value in any of them. There also seemed to be too many "subplots" going on at the same time, which made it difficult to follow along with the main story.

Gail has gone from a feisty, independent attorney to an insecure whining shrew. One wonders if she can go to the bathroom without checking with and getting Anthony's permission first. She whines when she thinks he doesn't want to marry her, then after deciding that maybe it's not a good idea to get married in the Keys without letting her daughter know, she gets upset when he suggests putting the wedding off until he's not in the middle of a case. She's still being manipulated by her daughter, but at the same time, she's breaking promises to her because she can't bear the thought of leaving Anthony's side for even a day. The character is turning into a caricature of who she used to be. And Anthony, ugh...I'm not sure I can think of a more stereotypical character except perhaps Carolina Aguilera-Garcia's Lupe Solano. The Spanish phrases, repeated in English in the next line, are overdone already. I've had enough of this rich, well-heeled Cuban to last me a lifetime. No one is this "perfect."

Hopefully this series will get back on track...though I'm not sure that's possible as long as Gail and Anthony remain together. I'd like to see the author return this series to the "Gail Connor" series that it used to be, rather than the "Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana" series that it's become.

Editorial Review:

Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana's vacation in the secluded Florida Keys is interrupted by a bizarre local murder-with explosive and unexpected ramifications. Now, as a tropical storm threatens to unleash its fury, they find themselves trapped among the strange and secretive islanders, and plunged into an escalating nightmare of unknown terrors, unexpected twists, and deepening madness...

Worth a look... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book at a tag sale not knowing Barbara Parker's work and was quickly enamored with it. Her characters are believable and the story line is engaging. No mushy stuff here.
I quickly went online to look for the next in the series.
Definately worth reading.

Great characters and a great read 5 out of 5 stars.

... The basic plot is a "whodunnit" legal thrilled where the heroine, Gail Connor, falls under suspicion for the murder of her sister Renée. There are subplots of jealousy, her marriage falling apart, her daughter being ignored, Renée's history, her work, an Indian clay mask, a dodgy older relative, but these are all secondary to the (for me, anyway) highlight of the book which is the relationship between Gail and a criminal lawyer Anthony Quintana. This man is described in much details, and it's all good! He is also a very interesting character (a Cuban man) and a strong character, as is Gail. Their relationship is a strong foundation for this book, and of the (currently) six follow up books. Certainly as a man he doesn't disappoint!

The plot is OK, the whodunnit is guessable, but it's the local Miami colour, the interesting conversations and dealings between the characters, which make it a great read. Barbara Parker writes with good humour and intelligence and I really care about what happens to these characters, although in subsequent books I occasionally want to shoot Gail for being very dim! But it's an excellent start to the series and well worth a read. And if you like tall, dark and handsome male leads then you can't get any better than Anthony Quintana. He's rich too!

Slightly Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a huge Barbara Parker fan, I was slightly disappointed by this book; it is my least favorite of her novels for the following reasons: 1. The discussion of Anthony's militant past in his college years -- his radical youth was hardly interesting and was in such great contrast to his present, suave exterior that I found it difficult to reconcile the two. 2. The amount of detail about Cuban politics; I frankly found it confusing and difficult to follow after a while. Parker obviously researched the topic extensively, but there was just so much INFORMATION! It felt like I was back in school after a while.

Believe me, I tried to like this book, because I like Barbara Parker's other books so much, but I just didn't go for it. I would recommend any of the other "Suspicion" books or my favorite, "Criminal Justice." Barbara Parker is a great writer, so don't miss her other books!

Editorial Review:

After turning down a lucrative partnership in a prestigious Miami law firm to start her own business, Gail has become engaged to Anthony--her longtime friend and lover. Embarking on this new life together inevitably opens the door to Anthony's past--a shadowy past containing an unspeakable tragedy. Now, as Gail accepts her first major case, elements from Anthony's past and present come together to threaten his entire family, and endanger his future with Gail.

OK for a follow up but could be better 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The original book in the Gail Connor/Anthony Quintana series, "Suspicion of Innocence" was excellent. This second book in the series is OK, but the characters are becoming rather more stereotyped.

Some months have passed since the end of the first book, and although in that book it appeared that Gail Connor was starting her own law firm, that hasn't happened yet. Her relationship with the gorgeous Anthony Quintana is also somewhat more distant than we might have expected.

This book is about Gail defending an old flame who is contesting a Will. Much of the plot is about society links and internal machinations within her law firm. Anthony Quintana features occasionally as a rather annoying macho "saving the day" kind of guy who tells Gail what to do (she then does the opposite). I found this book a little unsatisfactory as I felt the characters had not really moved on from the first book, they'd regressed. If you want to know how NOT to carry on a relationship with a gorgeous rich man and with your daughter, read what Gail does. She also continues to display her rather dense nature (the reader is well aware she's wandering into trouble long before she is) and it sometimes makes you wonder how she got into such a high-powered job.

The plot is OK although a little complicated at times, and the end is perhaps a little weak, but overall it's a good book. If I had read it first I would have been less inspired to read the others in the series - it's definitely important to start with Suspicion of Innocence.

not the author's best 2 out of 5 stars.

Unfortunately, Barbara Parker's stand alone novels are never as good as her Suspicion series. This latest novel is no exception.

The Perfect Fake by Barbara Parker is a thrilling read. 5 out of 5 stars.

There is not a writer who creates a tantalizing hero like Barbara Parker. ( I admit to being a fan, having read every single one of her books from the Suspicion series through BLOOD RELATIONS. In THE PERFECT FAKE, Tom has a dark past, or so people think, including his former girlfriend. Inside, he's noble and adores his sister, Rose, who owns a map shop. Tom works there, too, and in order to solve a brutal crime, he has to create a map. 'Nuff said, don't want to spoil your read, but the old world research Barbara Parker has done to create this lifelike tale is amazing. I eagerly await Barbara Parker's next novel.

Editorial Review:

Artist Tom Fairchild has a troubled past he can't shake. That's why he jumps at millionaire Stuart Barlowe's irresistible offer to travel to Italy and make an exact copy of a rare Renaissance map. Accompanied overseas by Barlowe's equally irresistible daughter, Allison, Tom suspects that what Barlowe wants is not a copy, but a forgery-and that he's prepared to kill to get it. As pawns in a reckless new game, Tom and Allison are running for their lives-while chasing the startling truth behind the mystery of the perfect fake.

Fantastic plot 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. The main character Dan Galindo was so likable that I can't wait for Parker to write another book featuring him. The plot and characters kept me from putting this book down; a real page-turner.

Editorial Review:

Dan Galindo, hero of Barbara Parker's fourth novel, Criminal Justice is living proof of the maxim "nice guys finish last." Once a federal prosecutor in Miami, Galindo lost his job when he refused to put a dubious witness on the stand and thus let a drug lord walk. Now he is in private practice, defending a beautiful rock star on minor charges. But before you can say "Book him, Dano," Galindo finds himself up to his neck in a labyrinthine world of drugs, crooked cops, laundered money, and murder.

Parker handles this latest tale of the seamy underbelly of the law with cool elan. Her rendering of the South Florida landscape is authentic, and the characters who slither through it are convincing, which puts Criminal Justice at the head of its class.
