No Stars Would Be More Appropriate 1 out of 5 stars.

If zero stars were available, that is what this novel would have received from me. I took along 3 books to read on vacation this year (my only time to read just for pleasure) and wasted 2 days reading this book. Being a fan of Patterson's current books, I thought I would read some of his older works. This book left me with the question "Why did I waste my precious vacation hours reading this?" I concur with another reviewer who stated that the dating of events is really strange. The epilogue has the exact same scenario as the prologue (with the same characters) but is dated 2 years later and these characters have all been horribly killed in the book, so it leaves you trying to figure out what happened since these characters clearly died earlier but are here again committing the same murders. What's up with that? I think I am pretty astute when reading the detective genre and only am occasionly surprised at a conclusion, but this one just left me wondering was some part missing? Was there some kind of clue that those murders didn't happen? I finally decided that it was just a poorly written book. I hadn't bother to read the reviews until I returned from vacation and then found that others had the same problem with this book that I had. If I had read the reviews before my trip, I would have taken a different book and not wasted my time on this read.

Patterson (with co-author) Outdid himself 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was one of his best. It had more depth with the historical fiction. I either like his books alot--- The Womens Murder Club mysteries, "The Honeymoon", "Beach House", and my favorite "Miracle on the 18th Green", or I don't--- like the Alex Cross books. Most with a co-writer are very good.
Jester was fasinating with amazing characters and a story that kept you wanting more. A fast and very interesting read. Thanx for the help. Andrew

Editorial Review:

Arriving home disillusioned from the Crusades, Hugh discovers that his village has been ransacked and his wife abducted by knights in search of a relic worth more than any throne in Europe. Only by taking on the role of a jester is he able to infiltrate his enemy's castle, where he thinks his wife is captive. With the unstoppable pace and plot of a page-turning Alex Cross novel, THE JESTER is a breathtakingly romantic, pulse-pounding adventure-one that could only be conjured by the mind of James Patterson. Everyone who has ever hoped for good to defeat evil or for love to conquer all will not be able to stop turning the pages of this masterful novel of virtue, laughter-yes, laughter-and suspense.

Would Be Hard to Recommend This Book 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read many of JP's books and find this is not one of his fast-paced, keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting to turn the next page books. It has several implausible, seeming contrived ideas (microwaving entire dormitories!). The main character has suffered the loss of all his immediate family and a wife he cherishes by terrorists, but quickly takes up with an old girlfriend who is also (unbeknownst to him) one of the bad-guys. Seemed very contrived and a bit stereotypical, i.e. all the Jewish Holocaust survivors in the book had become wealthy and internationally known personages. We all know this wasn't (isn't) the case.

Boring and Flat 2 out of 5 stars.

I like James Patterson's later novels, but I think he made a mistake by re-issuing some of his earlier books under new titles. SEE HOW THEY RUN, which was Patterson's third book, was originally titled the JERICHO COMMANDMENT and was originally published in the late 1970s. This plot deals with a terrorist plot involving the Olympics -- I won't say more than that, because it would spoil certain twists in the plotline (many of the reader reviews do exactly that, so be wary of reading them!).

Unfortunately, SEE HOW THEY RUN has really thin characterization and a meandering plot that doesn't really excite or satisfy the reader. I also wasn't thrilled to see the Holocaust used as a cheap plot device, which is essentially what this book boils down to.

Patterson, like most writers, got better with time. My advice is to skip this early effort and focus your attention on the Alex Cross series and Women's Murder Club series, which are far superior to this misfire.

Editorial Review:

A long-germinating plot for revenge, first conceived in the extermination camps of Nazi Germany, erupts in full force during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where a group of terrorists delivers a shocking ultimatum. Originally published as The Jericho Commandment. Reprint.

Editorial Review:

Taking a break from his phenomenally successful Alex Cross series, James Patterson's When the Wind Blows is as much child's fantasy as it is an adult nightmare. The novel moves away from the gritty Washington, D.C., setting of the Cross books and follows the daily life of Frannie O'Neill, a Colorado veterinarian. After the mysterious death of her husband several years before, Frannie retreated to an isolated life in her Colorado practice. But a series of bizarre events suddenly disrupts her lonely routine. On a personal level, she is shaken by her new tenant--Kit Harrison. Kit's too handsome and too friendly and he's a hunter (or so Frannie thinks). He's also recovering from a devastating personal tragedy, and, as Frannie eventually learns, he's really an FBI agent using his vacation to follow a crucial lead. But Kit isn't the one that's got Frannie concerned. As she says after stopping her Suburban one night to check out something on the side of the road: "What I saw was way beyond my abilities to imagine, beyond my comprehension, my system of belief, and maybe beyond my ability to communicate right now. The little girl's arms were folded back in a peculiar way, but when she lifted them--feathers fanned out." The girl is Max, and the mystery of her wings leads Frannie and Kit into a massive conspiracy involving secret genetic research and the scientific manipulation of the human species.

Patterson, a former advertising executive who coined such catchy phrases as "Nupe it!," knows how to entertain. His chapters are always short (some only two pages), and his writing is clear and unobtrusive; the reading experience is brisk--akin to watching a summer blockbuster. The book is not as dark or as weighty as the tales of detective-psychologist Alex Cross, but while some fans may be disappointed by Patterson's migration from pure suspense fiction, his first-person narrator Frannie, has a quirky realism that keeps this flight of fancy mostly on stable ground. --Patrick O'Kelley

Editorial Review:

By the #1 bestselling author of Lifeguard, a gleaming new summer thriller set in the luxurious Hamptons.

Montauk lawyer Tom Dunleavy's client list is woefully small--occasional real estate closings barely keep him in paper clips. When he is hired to defend a local man accused in a triple murder that has the East Hampton world in an uproar, he knows that he has found the case of his lifetime.

The crime turns the glittering playground of the super-rich into a blazing inferno. Dunleavy's client is a local hero, but Dunleavy knows the case rests atop a volcano of money, deception, and forbidden desires. His client is the perfect fall guy--unless he can find the key that unlocks the secret rooms of the gilt-shrouded set.

When Dunleavy is joined by his former flame, the savvy and well-connected attorney Kate Costello, he believes he has a chance. But payback is a bitch--especially from the rich. The violent retaliations of billionaires threatened by his investigation exceed anything Dunleavy has ever seen. With the entire nation's eyes on him in a new Trial of the Century, Dunleavy orchestrates a series of revelations that lead to a stunning outcome--only to find afterward that the truth is wilder than anything he ever imagined.

Another ho-hum sports novel 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Novels and movies about sports tend to follow the same pattern. If the central figure is a boxer, he will overcome adversity and knock out the champ. In Grisham's football novel, a flailing quarterback wins the championship, albeit elsewhere. Braddock knocks out Baer. Etc. And in Patterson's golf novel, a scratch duffer--well, take a guess.

As for miracles, there isn't much of one, and what miracle there is makes little or no sense. Read it for yourself and ask the burning question--why? And why did a weekend golfer suddenly find his putter? There are just all sorts of whys here, and Patterson brushes right by them. He never gets much past superficial in plot, character or theme.

Part of my problem here is golf itself. Men in pastel attire demand absolute silence as they address a ball that is not moving and which no one will try to field once it is struck. There is a kind of religious hush around tee or green. In baseball there is jeering noise as the batter tries to hit a moving ball with the hope that nine fielders won't get to it until the batter at least reaches first base. Golf isn't really sport by a strict definition. Baseball is. Football is. Hockey is.

The only worthwhile golf novel I know of is "Dead Solid Perfect" by Dan Jenkins. In fact, Jenkins wrote the best football novel as well: "Semi Tough." Both these examples are more for fun than for the thrill of victory. When a writer tries to make sports the central and serious theme, we know how it will end.

Editorial Review:

Travis McKinley is an ordinary man until, on Christmas day, he finds himself in the "zone"--playing golf like a pro. Later, at the PGA Senior Open, the TV audience watches as a miracle changes Travis and his family forever.

Usual 3 out of 5 stars.

Usual Patterson...hard to put down, enjoyable read, but nothing ground breaking. Nora was a likeable murderer. At times we could predict where the book was taking us but it still left us with enough twists and turns to keep the pages flipping.

A New twist on familiar story line 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book, as I enjoy all of Mr. Patterson's books. This story line was quite familiar to me as it reminded slightly of the movie black widow. If I try to explain it, Ill just give it all away just read the book it was suspenseful and not always easy to anticipate which is always a plus. there were unexpected twists and turns that keep you guessing and glued to the pages. A great read from an awesome writer.

Editorial Review:

When FBI agent John OHara first sees her, she seems perfect. She has the looks. The career. The clothes. The wit. The sophistication. The tantalizing sex appeal. The whole extraordinary packageand men fall in line to court her. So why is the FBI so interested in Nora Sinclair? Because mysterious things keep happening to people around her, especially the men. With the irresistible attraction of the greatest Hitchcock thrillers, HONEYMOON is a sizzling, twisting tale of a woman with a deadly appetite and the men who dare to fall for herand James Patterson will keep readers guessing until the last deadly kiss.

OK for a Summer Read 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is light on suspense and not what would be considered "a page turner" or a book that just could not be put down until finished. It is mediocre but still entertaining and I don't regret spending a couple of days reading it. The outcome is predictable with no surprises but growing up in the 60's, I could see MLK and RFK all over it. It really gives one a sense of the turbulent times back then. Being a Texas transplanted to Tennessee, I could actually relate to some of the idioms. Good read, just not heavyweight intense stuff.

Not one of his better books 1 out of 5 stars.

I am a huge Patterson fan, however this is the first book of his that I have ever read (25 read so far) that I did not enjoy. It jumps around so much it is hard to follow and confusing when it ends.

Fast-paced Fun 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As I scanned the opinions of other readers, I found that in general, people either loved or hated this book. Those who didn't like it seemed to complain at the implausibility of the story. I enjoyed the book because of it's implausibility, which contributed to the overall sense of fun and adventure that is paramount to a good work of fiction. I read fiction to be entertained, not enlightened, and Beach House certainly delivers.

A good looking, charismatic young man is murdered, on the beach, while he is supposed to be waiting the arrival of an anonymous lover. Instead, he is brutally beaten to death. Something takes place in the last few seconds of his life that tips him off as to who is responsible for his murder. It is up to the dead man's brother, a promising law student, to find the clues needed to bring those responsible to justice.

While not a lot of what happens during the 356 pages is likely, it makes for a fast, fun, suspenseful read. Patterson, along with Peter DeJonge, weave a story of powerful people manipulating those lesser than they, blackmail, sex, and the limitless extremes that a person will go through for someone they truly love.

I thoroughly enjoyed Beach House and can't wait to tear into the sequel; Beach Road. If you are able to forgive a little far-fetched story telling, you too will enjoy this tale.
