a hysterical historical musical romp 5 out of 5 stars.

This mystery is a follow on to the Cadenza for Caruso mystery. Caruso has been forbidden to interfere in a murder investigation by the police, so he convinces Geraldine Farrar, a soprano at the Met opera, to investigate for him. Narrated in the first person by Geraldine, the novel provides amusing portraits of many famous Met singers and the life they led in WWI New York City. Ms. Paul's portrait of Geraldine is apparently fairly close to the real thing -- a passionate, intelligent, witty, talented, and beautiful woman. Though not a big fan of opera (but a big fan of NYC), I enjoyed this humorous mystery tremendously. I liked it so much, that if I were not an honest woman, I'd have told the public library I lost the book and paid the fine. Hello, publishers! This is one of many vintage mystery novels that deserve to be back in print so a new generation can enjoy them!

Meddling, merriment, murder and mayhem at the Met 5 out of 5 stars.

Paul had to do a lot of research to put this delightful story together and she has done a superb job of portraying historic opera stars in a fictional situation. Geraldine Ferrar is the heroine; Enrico Caruso and Arturo Toscanino share the action with fictional characters in this romp through murder at the Metropolitan Opera.

Phillippe Duchon is an annoying, egotistical personality and everyone at the Met has just about had all they can take of him. Suddenly someone replaces his throat spray with ammonia. His vocal chords and his life are finished.

"Rico" Caruso is hard on the trail of the killer but Police Lt. O'Halloran of the NYPD threatens to lock him up if he doesn't quit meddling. Geraldine Ferrar takes over for Rico and the fearless and gorgeous diva throws caution to the wind to find the killer.

This is lightweight entertainment, sheer delight with every turn of the page. Prepare to laugh out loud -- you'll dread finishing it.

Barbara Paul was a professor at University of Pittsburg and her love of writing shows in this well plotted, absorbing mystery. Newly promoted Lieutenant Marian Larch is confronted with a conundrum- why would anyone kill a harmless old man? Was it a mistake or is there a hiden motive? She confronts male prejudice on the job, pressure as the affluent and not so innocent threaten lawsuits as Marian presses closer to the truth. Paul skillfully mixes humor with suspense- Marian is invited to the "best man" at her former partner's wedding. To further complicate her life Marian's former lover re-enters her life. All of the characters are gems- from the priest who mixes up the wedding, to her partner's future battle ax mother-in-law Paul develops complex and believable characters. If you like this one also read the highly suspenseful, gritty You Have the Right to Remain Silent- Marian has to investigate the murder of four executives!, and read all of the Larch series. Barbara Paul is the best mystery writer and most underrated mystery novelist in America. Rereading it was as great a pleasure the second and third times as the first because I could appreciate skillful settings, character, plot development and the graceful writing! An underrated gem!

Editorial Review:

Newly promoted NYPD lieutenant Marian Larch investigates the murder of an elderly gentleman who met his death on a crowded bus of passengers who saw nothing and begins to suspect that someone had hired a professional killer. Reprint. PW.

A great book-a great series-a fantastic author 5 out of 5 stars.

Rita and Hugh are in the midst of a nasty divorce that includes child custody of their four year old son Bobby when someone tries to snatch the child. Only the quick intervention of a police officer stops the abduction from being successful. Though each parent accuses the other of orchestrating the incident, the lad's wealthy grandfather believes that a true kidnapping for ransom was attempted. The NYPD assign Lieutenant Marian Larch to investigate the case.

Before Marian can dig deeply into the investigation, the case unravels as the lead suspects, the parents, are murdered. Still, Marian inches closer to solving the case when her lover, private investigator Curt Holland is kidnapped. His abductors want her to drop her investigation or they will torture their victim till he dies. Marian, who has always feared a commitment, now has a new fear to deal with: the potential loss of her beloved, who will certainly be killed if she does nothing.

Barbara Paul has written numerous mysteries, but her Marian Larch series is by far her best. Marian is the complete woman of the nineties as she struggles with her ambition and independence Vs a commitment to her lover. FULL FRONTAL MURDER adds much insight to Marian's motivations as her personal and professional lives crash together. The Larch books are one of the finest police procedural series because it takes readers to the inside of Manhattan through the senses of a fantastic multi-dimensional protagonist.

Editorial Review:

In the vicious battle for custody of a four-year-old boy, the stakes are much too high. When a string of coldly casual murders ups the ante still further, Lieutenant Marian Larch steps in. Then the killer starts coming after her and everything she holds dear, and all she can think about is getting back out again--alive.

A good collection 5 out of 5 stars.

These are superior stories, and they're all different. She can make you laugh in one story and give you chills in the next. The title novella is a fantastic piece of writing.

Nice variety 4 out of 5 stars.

I was impressed by the variety in these stories. Some of them are only meant to be light entertainment, but others like "Jack Be Quick" and "The Favor" really get to you. I especially liked "Scat" -- which uses the title word in four different meanings.

One of the best books I've ever come across! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book! I stumbled across it and thought the title was amusing. I ended up reading it in 1 day. I actually couldn't put it down! The story itself is great, her sense of humor shows through, but there is one problem with it... it's too short!! This would make a great series!! I highly recommend it if you can find it. I'm keeping my copy though!
