Bone up on Dumas and you're bound to love it! 4 out of 5 stars.

I wish the literary references weren't constantly beyond me, because I really liked this book, but I did feel it would have helped to bone up on Dumas and The Three Musketeers in advance. However, if you like books, and mysteries, with a bit of occult (perhaps conjuring up Satan himself), this book will keep you interested to the very last page.

"The Flanders Panel" was the first Perez-Reverte book I read, and as soon as I finished it, I was ready for more! I found the setting of the story to be very believable as far as the art restoration and museum milieu. I liked the main character, Julia, and I was fascinated by the mystery inside a mystery of the painting. The writing is very atmospheric, you can almost feel and smell things as they are described. I'm not a chess player, so the details of the game that are part of the mystery were lost on me, but I didn't feel as though I was missing the story because of it. After a lot of suspense is built, the conclusion is somewhat disappointing, the motive is weak, but I liked the story anyway.

In The Club Dumas, Arturo Pérez-Reverte explored the labyrinthine world of antiquarian book dealers, spicing his tale of mystery and murder with characters straight out of Paradise Lost and The Three Musketeers. Next came The Flanders Panel, a brilliant puzzle comprised of art, chess, and untimely death whose resolution lies in a painting by a Flemish master. In The Seville Communion, Pérez-Reverte turned his sights on the tangled politics of the Roman Catholic Church as an appropriate backdrop--for murder. In his fourth novel translated into English, the Spanish writer changes centuries (if not his focus on homicide), returning to the mid-1800s to follow the exploits of Don Jaime Astarloa, the eponymous fencing master.

The year is 1866 and revolution is brewing in Spain. The corrupt Bourbon queen, Isabella II, is slowly losing her grip on power as equally corrupt exiled politicians vie to be her successor in a new republic. A treasure hunt for a Jesuit ship sunk by pirates off the coast of Spain is the plot on which Perez-Reverte's new novel turns, but a love story is the real heart of this nicely crafted, carefully told adventure. A suspended sailor happens on a maritime auction in Barcelona, where he meets the beautiful Tanger Soto, a museum curator whose winning bid buys her a 17th-century atlas that may reveal the final resting place of the Dei Gloria. Coy, the sailor, is totally smitten, so it's no surprise that he signs on to help Tanger track the sunken ship to its grave in waters he's sailed since childhood. Enlisting the aid of a diver friend, Coy and Tanger stay a few steps ahead of the crooked salvagers who've been trying to get the atlas, outmaneuvering the attempts on their lives and the efforts to keep them from the treasure. Lucas Corso is a bibliophile mercenary in the middle of two searches. He needs to prove if a manuscript of The Three Musketeers is genuine. He must also find the solution to the enigma of a diabolic book, burned at the printers in 1667 by the Holy office and condemned by the Vatican; only two other copies are known. The stories intermingle and result in a page-turning thriller distinctive of Perez Reverte s writing. The book was taken to the big screen in a movie titled The Ninth Gate by renowned director Roman Polanski.

This is the first of Perez-Reverte's books that I have struggled to finish. The ham-handed interviewer slows the story down to a crawl every time he enters. And the story itself has none of the fascinating complications and turns that make the author's other novels (Club Dumas, Flanders Panel) so fascinating. No queen, just a lady in waiting. Disappointing.

Cuando termié de leer esta libro descubrí que era el segundo de una serie. Sin perder tiempo busqué el primero (Las aventuras del Capitán Alatriste) y me lo devoré en cuestión de horas. Si bien es cierto que se puede leer sin haber leído el primero, es mucho más sabroso leerlo con la información entregada en la primera parte. Iñigo Balboa,un jovencito que llegará a ser escudero de Alatriste, será quien nos narre lo que pasa: con su óptica de niño que se hace hombre, de cómplice de un extraordinario soldado que no tiene pares con la espada, pero que por honor desafía a un hombre de poder, a inquisidores. Iñigo se verá en un fuerte aprieto del cual sólo Alatriste es capaz de salvarlo.
