I can't believe I'm the first to review this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful story in the George Felse series, although we see very little of George this go round and a great deal of his marvelous wife, Bunty. In this one Bunty is on her own while George is in London following a lead. While she is being maudlin about her forty-first birthday, she gets thrown into the adventure of her life. She meets a distraught stranger in a pub on Saturday night, and she finds herself caught up in a truly terrifying situation. The action of the book only takes place over 24 hours, but there is enough action jam-packed in that 24 hours to keep the reader turning pages. We're talking about murder, kidnapping, organized crime and a whole slew of lesser things. And Bunty slides through it all in her usual inimitable fashion. Of course the writing is pure Ellis Peters, and the book is a delight!

Cadfael lives!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Whatever size, shape, color--Cadfael is the best. I wish someone would take up the cross and continue her sagas. You can only read these books so many times before you begin to think you are living in Shrewsbury.

Editorial Review:

This second Cadfael omnibus includes three titles: "Saint Peter's Fair", "The Leper of Saint Giles" and "The Virgin in the Ice".

Another Ellis Peters Wonder! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe that no one else has reviewed this book yet. My recommendation is for those of you interested in intelligent, well-written British procedurals, do not ignore the entire George Felse series. In this book we have an up-close and personal look at an archeological site of interest on the Welsh border. The site is called "Aurae Phiala" and it is one of a few known old Roman civilisations. We are also treated to a wonderful cast of characters, and a perfectly written mystery that will baffle up until the very end. And we have George Felse himself. He is a Detective Inspector now, but he is still his usual implacable and unperturbable self. What a wonderful series. Don't let your reading of Ms. Peters end with the Brother Cadfael series. Give this one a try too.

Editorial Review:

The ancient Roman city exuded evil. From the moment she entered the walls of Aurae Phiala, Chrlotte Rossignol knew her life was in danger. But she coudn't turn back. As the only surviving heir of Dr. Alan Morris, she would never rest until her missing relative was found.

Editorial Review:

A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES. In 1137 the head of Shrewsbury Abbey decided to acquire the remains of St Winifred for his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to her final resting place in Wales and they find the villagers passionately divided by the Benedictines' offer for the saint's relics. Canny, wise and all too worldly, Cadfael isn't surprised when this taste for bones leads to bloody murder. ONE CORPSE TOO MANY. In 1138, war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud takes Brother Cadfael from the quiet world of his garden to the bloody battlefield. Not far from the safety of the Abbey walls, Shrewsbury Castle falls, leaving its ninety-four defenders loyal to the Empress to hang as traitors. With a heavy heart, brother Cadfael agrees to bury the dead, only to make a grisly discovery - there are ninety-five bodies awaiting his attention. MONK'S-HOOD. Brother Cadfael's herb garden is flourishing under his care, then a local dignitary is poisoned with one of the herbalist's own concoctions and Cadfael finds he has to defend himself and another suspect whom he is sure is innocent.

Another book about Ellis Peters' India 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is also set in India, but with Dominic minus his Tossa who is apparently back in England finishing a degree. I think the book misses Tossa. She is always an interesting character. But we have the indomitable Dominic and a very interesting Swami who is Dominic's mentor. The book is about terrorist plots and bombings and is set in sixties India. But it certainly could be now. Terrorists and bombings are in the news every day. In the book it appears that a terrorist is following Dominic and his party throughout India, and he is leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. The book is fast-paced and has a very surprising ending. Certainly worthy of the great Ellis Peters!

Dominic and Tossa's first journey to India 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Strictly speaking, this isn't an Inspector Felse mystery, but a Dominic Felse mystery. Ideally, read all the preceding Inspector Felse mysteries, in order, as they follow Dominic's childhood onward - but only to enjoy the character development properly. At a minimum, at least read _The Piper on the Mountain_, which recounts Dominic's first meeting with Tossa Barber and her mother, before _Mourning Raga_.

Tossa's movie-star mother Chloe has a genius for disrupting her daughter's plans, so Dominic fears the worst when Chloe calls the university just before Christmas vacation, with an offer that sounds too good to be true: accept an all-expense-paid trip to India, to escort 14-year-old Anjli Kumar, the daughter of Chloe's co-star Dorette Lester, to stay with her father while her mother is filming in England. (Anjli's mother is nominally the custodial parent, but even she's mostly an absentee.) Happily, Ms. Pargeter (a.k.a. Ellis Peters), doesn't make either leading lady behave according to stereotype; each is charming in private as well as in public, and they seem to get on well together; their influence to bring others into their orbit is as inevitable as a planet's gravity. :)

Dorette arranged for an old friend to look out for Anjli and her companions, since the friend is directing a film - a dramatized life of Buddha - on location. A potted mini-biography of Siddhartha's early life, before he became Buddha, is provided as the film is described; one noteworthy celebrity they meet is the composer working on the film. He's adapted a morning raga - something sung when guests depart in the morning - as a theme to be played for Siddhartha's bride and their young son; the adaptation is catchy.

Unfortunately, Dorette only wrote to her ex, rather than phoning him or waiting for a reply. Kumar has been out of touch for months, and his mother - Anjli's grandmother - is dying. The only relative left functioning is a cousin who acts as trustee for the estate - and Dominic and Tossa aren't too keen to leave Anjli, Kumar's heir, in his care.

But the matter is taken abruptly out of their hands when Anjli is kidnapped and held for ransom after her grandmother's death. Although published after _Black is the Colour of My True-Love's Heart_, the events of this book take place earlier: their first meeting with the Swami, mentioned in that book, occurs herein. As a friend of Kumar's, he takes a hand in working for Anjli's safe return. And Dominic is very uneasy, since the morning of her disappearance, he heard someone in the street outside the hotel singing a song from the soundtrack of a film that's still in production.

Editorial Review:

As a favour to his girlfriend Tossa's beautiful but erratic filmstar mother, Dominic Felse agrees to escort a teenage heiress to her father in India. But travelling with the spoilt, precocious Anjili is no sinecure -- and the task of delivering her back to her family proves less than easy. Dominic and Tossa find themselves embroiled in a mystery that swiftly and shockingly becomes a murder investigation. For behind the colourful, smiling mask of India that the tourist sees is another country -- remote, mysterious -- and often shatteringly brutal...

A fun mystery 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Fans of Ellis Peters's Inspector George Felse mystery series (the series she wrote before her more famous Brother Cadfael mysteries) will be very pleased with this book. Instead of George Felse, the hero of this story is George's son Dominic, who fans of the series have watched growing from a precocious adolescent to a teenager, and now to a very intelligent young man. On a trip with friends from university, Dominic stumbles accross a death which, although it was ruled an accident, may not have been so accidental after all. Not a little captivated by Tossa, the charming step-daughter of the dead man, he begins to investigate. The result is a clever, engaging mystery/suspense tale that will charm fans of the traditional British mystery.

Smoothly Written But Extremely Contrived 3 out of 5 stars.

Best known for her "Brother Cadfael" series, Ellis Peters (1913-1985) was also the author of thirteen novels featuring Inspector George Felse. Published in 1966, THE PIPER ON THE MOUNTAIN is the fifth novel in that series.

Peters often worked with contrived plots, and that tendency is particularly obvious in this tale. Government security agent Herbert Terrell, who is fond of mountain climbing, falls to his death while on vacation in Czechoslovakia's Tatras Mountains--but the nature of the accident seems a bit odd to Robert Welland, assigned to the British embassy at Prague, and he suspects foul play. When Welland accidentally communicates his suspicions to Terrell's stepdaughter Tossa Barber, Tossa turns a student vacation to Europe into a search for the truth, and since Inspector Felse's son Dominic is in her party can Inspector Felse be far behind?

Unfortunately, however, the novel offers too little in the way of plot to sustain itself over the course of its two hundred pages--and although it offers an occasionally interesting look at Cold War era Czechoslovakia this is not really enough to hold a consistent interest. Even so it is smoothly written in the Ellis Peters style, and while I would not recommend it to newcomers to the series, established fans will likely enjoy it.

A very good read 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book enormously. The plot is tight and well-crafted, and the characters are engaging, well-drawn, and well-developed. The main character develops (in about 48 hours) from a green, but clever, boy, into a charming, intelligent, young man, with a clear idea of who he is, and what he seeks in life. There's a rather sweet love-story, interesting bad guys, and a suspenseful crime story. A real pleasure--even if it doesn't include any of our old friends, Peters's familiar continuing characters. I got it from the library, and I'm trying to find a copy. I wish someone would re-publish it--I recommend it .

Light-hearted mystery 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked up this book on vacation several years ago because the author's name sounded familiar, and it instantly became one of my favorites! The characters are warm and believable, and the plot is a perfect mixture of surprise and predictability. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries with happy endings. It will make you smile.

Editorial Review:

When Alf picked up the hitch-hiker, he seemed perfect as a stand-in for the horrific crime Alf was about to commit. But by luck William is saved from Alf's plan and someone else is killed in his place, this leads to a tangle of mistaken identity and an unsolved bank robbery from many years ago.

Light, Amusing--But Extremely Contrived And Very Transparent 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Best known for her "Brother Cadfael" series, Ellis Peters (1913-1985) was also the author of thirteen novels featuring Inspector George Felse. Published in 1965, A NICE DERANGEMENT OF EPITAPHS is the fourth novel in that series. Like most of Peters' work, it is a lightly written, enjoyable read.

The story itself finds Inspector Felse, his wife Bunty, and their just-adult son Dominic on a seaside vacation--where they encounter Simon Towne, well known author and lecturer. Towne is present to open the tomb of Jan Treverra, a locally legendary figure who died in the late 1700s and whose crypt may include important writings. But when the Treverra vault is opened, Towne and his assistants find more bodies than they expect.

Peters often elected to work with highly contrived plots, and this is particularly true of EPITAPHS. At one point, Peters has one of her characters comment that the twists and turns of the case are so ridiculous that not even a novelist could get away with them! And it is true that most readers will see each major plot device in the offing long before it appears on the page. When the author writes more for amusement than mystery, this is not necessarily a bad thing, and Peters handles the most blatant aspects of her plot with considerable humor.

Unfortunately, however, the plot is not only contrived: it is extremely transparent. Any mystery reader worth the name will probably spot the killer by the fourth chapter because of the manner in which Peters sets up her tale. Although it is a quick, amusing, and painless read, this is really one of Peters' weaker efforts. Fans will enjoy it, but few will put it on the "must keep" shelf of their bookcase.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Editorial Review:

When the tomb of Jan Treverra is opened to reveal two recently dead bodies, neither of which is Treverra's, Detective Inspector George Felse, on holiday nearby, steps in to investigate the murders. Reprint.

Derek Jacobi returns heard but not seen as BROTHER CADFAEL in a quite interesting plot-twister! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have always believed that the BBC made the finest adaptations for radio and television, and indeed the BROTHER CADFAEL series is no exception; Bert Coules (who most recently adapted Sherlock Holmes for BBC radio) and the fine actor Philip Madoc brought Cadfael to life in three adaptations which are well worth listening to if you can: MONKS HOOD, THE VIRGIN IN THE ICE and DEAD MAN'S RANSOM. However, Sir Derek Jacobi was an excellent Cadfael for television ... even if some of the teleplays didn't quite follow the plot of the original novels. Acorn Audio did something quite extraordinary when they turned the audio tracks of the four teleplays of the first Cadfael TV series into an audio series, adding a narrator to fill in the gaps and adding some slight commentary on the action which could not be seen on an audiotape; in doing so, they tightened up the narrative to keep the stories moving at a good clip so that the listener would not lose interest, and Stephen Flynn's narration is well-read and well-written. This story, while admitedly not one of my personal favorites in the series, has enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the viewer (or listener in this case!) rivetted, and I have to say in this recording's favor that the telepay follows the book very closely, more so than many of those in the TV series. I am sorry that Acorn Audio hasn't adapted the rest of the televised Cadfael stories into this format, and the only grievance I have is that the cast of characters is not read out at the end of each story (all we get to know is that Sir Derek Jacobi plays Brother Cadfael, when there are some fine actors in each of the stories). This is something entirely new, coming somewhere in between actual radio drama and books-on-tape, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Brother Cadfael series. The listener will not lose anything by not seeing the action on a TV screen, and the acting you will HEAR combined with the narration will definitely provide an ejoyable listening experience.
