As the legions of fans of Elizabeth Peters's Edwardian archeological mystery series know, Amelia is also possessed of a swift temper, an incorrigible curiosity, and an uncanny proclivity for attracting trouble. But in 1915, with the world gripped by the madness of war, trouble is endemic. In an effort to prevent their son Ramses from being coerced into working for British intelligence (in the sort of endeavor that nearly got him killed a year earlier when he infiltrated a band of Egyptian nationalists and prevented a Turkish-backed uprising), Amelia and husband Emerson and the rest of their dizzyingly large entourage flee England for the reassuringly stoic splendor of their beloved Egyptian ruins.

So much for a quiet dig among the mastabas. With their usual luck, the family promptly finds itself inundated by would-be assassins and nosy journalists. Amelia quickly deduces that Ramses's undercover work is at the root of both threat and curiosity; more puzzling is the appearance of the odd corpse or two and a rash of stunningly efficient tomb robberies. When Ramses and his wife, Nefret, travel to Luxor to check on the security of some of their old excavations, they find an all-too-familiar irritant behind the robberies. It would be telling to reveal his identity, but fans of the series will soon figure it out, with the aid of a little suspension of disbelief. With Ramses and Nefret on one hand, and Amelia and Emerson on the other, engaged in "protecting" the other side from conflict and trouble, the novel unfolds in a merry chase of misdirection and miscommunication.

There is a comforting consistency to Peters's series. By now, all of the characters' quirks are etched in stone like so many well-worn hieroglyphs. Amelia's narrative has the familiarity of a treasured and oft-read letter from a slightly batty aunt. Even the miraculous return of (no, I really can't say), though perhaps intended as a radical plot twist, adheres to the most genteel of mystery traditions, à la Doyle and Christie. Innovation can be overrated; with Peters's flawless record of producing amusing, easily digested novels showing no signs of faltering, fans should devour this morsel--and wait impatiently for the next tasty installment. --Kelly Flynn

This series is a total delight, and this book is certainly one of my personal favourites. In the book we actually have two parallel stories running - that of Amelia and Emerson, and their search to solve the mystery of the mysterious mummy that they have found, and the young people - Ramses, David and Nefret doing their own thing to solve that same mystery. What makes the story so very funny is that Amelia is not at all aware of what "the children" are doing. That is one of the funniest things in the book - her insistence on calling the three young people children. She has no idea what dangerous games they are up to. Emerson guesses, but he keeps his thoughts to himself. Ramses is turning into quite a character. In this book he is sixteen years of age, but his immense intelligence, his skill at disguise and his knowledge of many languages make him a formidable opponent. I really can't wait to see what this group of five people get up to next! Ms. Peters tells a wonderful story, but it's her characterizations that are so remarkable.

Elizabeth Peters's books about Egyptologist Amelia Peabody are like longer, more literate versions of those letters some relatives send to keep people up to date on their family adventures. They're also lively feminist spoofs on the two-fisted Victorian adventure novels that inspired the Indiana Jones films. In this ninth book in the Peabody series, it's 1903, and Amelia and her clan--irascible husband Emerson, fearless son Ramses, gorgeous ward Nefret--are in Cairo, dealing with everything from mummies (both the ancient and more recent varieties) to affairs of the heart. Previous Peabody paperbacks include The Hippopotamus Pool and The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog.

empty story about empty-headed heroine. ugh 1 out of 5 stars.

I am new to reading mysteries outside of those written by agatha christie. I picked up this book because I was intrigued to read about a smart and clever art historian as detective and also because this book seemed to get so many good reviews.

I am close to the end but so far it has been a total letdown. ugh!!! vicky is a big blond ditz who spends more time worrying about her hair and clothes than in learning about the suspects she is hired to find or about the art treasure she gets to visit. (there is very little info on the artwork at all, which was a letdown as I am a nerd and like learning about that stuff.)

vicky is not a sleuth! she needs to get rescued by a big strong man left and right. she can't figure out anything for herself. everything is spelled out for her, and for the reader, except that I was pretty much able to guess the guilty parties from the start. it isn't that hard!

the big mystery here is wondering why we are following such a vacant vicky around? why not a character who is informed and observes things?

the soap opera romance is cliche. this book is a bit of a letdown if you are hoping for a gripping intelligent thriller.

reader beware!

I had been meaning to try one of Ms. Peters' books, so when I saw this in the library I picked it up. I guess you have to read the many previous Amelia Peabody novels to appreciate this one, but I gave up after about 60 pages. Boring and confusing.

Barbara Rosenblatt really captures the spirit of the Amelia Peabody novels. She understands that these books do not take themselves too seriously. Amelia Peabody is irrepressible and the slow pace of the story is enjoyable because the characters are so likeable. A true pleasure.

Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences.

Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' best loved and brilliant creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her no nonsense dress sense and forthright opinions.

Egyptologist Amelia Peabody along with her husband Emerson, perhaps the most famous archaeologist of his day and their son Ramses are in the Sudan searching for Viscount Blacktower's son and his new bride. As trouble follows them everywhere it is not long before they are caught up in a web of deceit and treachery. Once again their survival depends upon Peabody's powers of deduction, Ramses ability to look like one of the natives and Emerson's ability to frighten anybody and everybody who gets in his way.

It's been awhile since I've read a book that I've taken such delight in. Vicky Bliss is a methodical detective much like Mary Russell from the Laurie R. King series. In "Street of the Five Moons", Vicky meets her match in "John Smythe", secretary to a nobleman and art collector, who strongly resembles Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey. His playful evasiveness is a delightful foil for Vicky's determination. Peters describes Germany and Italy like she's a longtime resident and makes clever allusions to more than a few literary classics.
"Street of the Five Moons", like many series' second books, seems stronger than the first installment and has more compelling characters. Vicky's asides to the reader are also a fun device. I look forward to finishing this series and strongly recommend "Street of the Five Moons".

A little different, but just as good 5 out of 5 stars.

The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog is a little different from the preceding books. Still, I enjoyed it at least as much. If you prefer Emerson and Amelia to Ramses, you'll rejoice at this book, where he provides some comic relief without hogging the story. In this one, you get to know Amelia a lot better. Since it's set in Amarna, not Luxor, it helps if you've read the first one because there's a lot of allusions.
In addition, it had a great climax and a magnificent ending. I really enjoyed this one - it might be one of my favorites.

Elizabeth Peters has written another adorable little mystery in her Amelia Peabody series. The no nonsense, take charge, verrry British Amelia is spending another season in Egypt with her hunky, brilliant husband Radcliffe Emerson. And, the good news is that Ramses, her genius ten-year-old son is staying in England with his newly adopted sister at his Aunt and Uncle's castle. Ramses is a continuous source of exasperation to his mother who has little patience with her precocious son; subsequently she is thrilled to have her husband, Emerson all to herself. Even after eleven years of marriage, Amelia will melt while just looking at her husband's dimpled chin.

It is a good thing that 'Peabody' is so in love with Emerson because in this book, he is a lout! He acts like a spoiled, petulant child with no thought of anyone but himself. I really didn't like him at all. I am amazed at the devotion to Emerson from his wife and his devoted workers because he certainly doesn't deserve it. Of course, as usual for this series there is a lot of action that includes a kidnapping, amnesia, and impersonations.

I missed the romance between the main characters and I also missed Ramses. The best parts of the book were his letters to his mama and papa.
Although I loved reading this book (as I have this entire series), I really liked the first six books a tad better. Here's hoping #8-18 will be fabulous.

Why I love Amelia Peabody Mysteries: 5 out of 5 stars.

Reading an Amelia Peabody Mystery is like having a favorite meal. You don't have to have it every day but when you do, it is always satisfying and delicious. You can go weeks or months between this meal and yet just thinking about it will make you salivate. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL by the venerable Elizabeth Peters is number 8 in her Amelia Peabody series of eighteen or so little novels. Peter's books are so easy to read and very easy to get into. You can pick them up and become interested on the first page. They are really ideal 'beach' or 'vacation' books because they are so straightforward and uncomplicated to read, even with a multitude of interruptions. Plus, I can read a book in the series and not read another one for weeks or months and know that I can get right back into these little stories with no problem. In addition, THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL has a glossary in the beginning that identifies all the characters.

Thankfully, the entire family is together for the 'season' of excavating in Egypt and that makes me happy. Last year the children--Ramses, the 12 year-old boy genius and his adopted sister (a miniature Amelia, who at fifteen is quite the beauty) Nefret, were left at Aunt Evelyn & Uncle Walter's estate in England. David, an Egyptian orphan has been added to this entourage as well. Evelyn and Walter also lend their services in the excavation of this new tomb, supposedly of Queen Tetisheri. Since we are so familiar with this family, having met the four adults thirteen years previously during their courtship (in Egypt, of course), there is something very comfortable about rejoining the group.

Naturally we have the usual murders, kidnappings, grave robbers and undercover criminals. We still have the tender yet cantankerous Emerson and his no nonsense verrrry British wife Amelia who is still anticipating every move. But the children are the ones who add a delightful diversion to this adorable little mystery. And, as always, we know that everything will come out all right in the end. Every time I read a book in this series, it is like rejoining an old friend (or having a favorite meal;-)

I've read this book several times. I love coming back to it after a couple of years and enjoying it all over again. The best thing about Elizabeth Peters/B Michaels is that she creates a cozy atmostphere, with every day occurences (such as eating lunch...sleeping...,) yet, there are not so every day occurences thrown in - ghosts, etc. It makes it feel like is business as usual to suspect that a ghost is inhabiting your house. I just love the atmostphere she creates! She doesn't write these types of books anymore, - not a dynasty - like Amelia (love those too, of course), but these single book stories, and I miss them!

These are the carefree days before marriage and new responsibility, and anything goes --including house-sitting at eccentric Aunt Kate's palatial estate in Burton, Virginia. Ellie feels right at home here with the nearly invisible housekeepers and the plethora of pets, but she soon realizes that there are disturbing secrets about the local aristocracy buried in a dusty old book she has carried into the mansion. And her sudden interest in the past is attracting a slew of unwelcome guests -- some of them living and some, perhaps not. And the terrible vegeance that Ellie and her friends seem to have aroused -- now aimed at them -- surely cannot be...satanic.
