Finally we get some answers as well as some resolutions to issues. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I too am an Amelia Peabody fan. I absolutely love this series, and this book is a great addition to it. In it we finally get some very outstanding questions answered, and we also get some unresolved issues resolved. But the thing that I enjoyed the most about this particular book is that we get a closer look at Emerson! Yes, Amelia and all her troupe are also there, thank heavans, but getting a closer look at Emerson finally is an added bonus. We actually see a little of him as a young man and we get an understanding of how he became the man he did. Reading these books is such a deligbt, and the characters seem like old friends! And there is lots of heart-stopping action to keep you turning the pages. This book is set at the beginning of the First World War, and we also get a bit of an insight of some of the dangerous games carried out on the Egyptian front. I hope that future books will embellish on this a little. I certainly can't wait to read the next book.

Editorial Review:

Trouble is brewing in Egypt at the close of 1914 and no one will escape the fury of the tempest to come. With the world around them at war, Amelia Peabody and her husband Radcliffe Emerson have returned to Cairo for another season of archaeological excavation -- despite the increasing danger of an attack on the Suez Canal and on Egypt itself.

A terrible conflict looms. A long-simmering love affair is resolved. A dastardly plot twists like a serpent writhing in the desert sun. There is no escaping the onrushing hurricane that now threatens the Emersons and their world -- so Amelia plunges right into it.

A worthy entry in the Amelia Peabody series! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is enjoyable and fun like the rest in this wonderful series, but it does not do well as a "stand-alone" novel. There are too many things that have gone on in previous books that keep cropping up in this one for someone who is new to the series to be able to understand and to enjoy the book as it should be enjoyed. This is a wonderful series and each of the books in it are great in their own right, but in order to be fully appreciated, the series should be read as a series and in order. This allows for the maximum enjoyment of each installment. That way the reader can see the relationship between Amelia and her Emerson develop, they can watch the children as they grow up, and understand each of these characters fully. Besides, it's such great fun to read these books. I can always hardly wait for the next one. This book was set in 1907, and it takes place in The Valley of Kings where Amelia and Emerson have been excavating for a number of seasons already. The mystery and the adventure are exciting, and we see some of the Emersons' previous villains appear in this one. What I really enjoyed though was Ramses and seeing the man he has become. He is going to be a formidable presence in upcoming books.

Editorial Review:

Can fear kill? There are those who believe so--but Amelia Peabody is skeptical. A respected Egyptologist and amateur sleuth, Amelia has foiled felonious schemes from Victoria's England to the Middle East. And she doubts that it was a Nineteenth-Dynasty mummy's curse that caused the death of a night watchman in the British Museum. The corpse was found sprawled in the mummy's shadow, a look of terror frozen on the guard's face. What--or who--killed the unfortunate man is a mystery that seems too intriguingly delicious for Amelia to pass up, especially now that she, her dashing archaeologist husband, Emerson, and their precocious son, Ramses, are back on Britain's shores. But a contemporary curse can be as lethal as one centuries old--and the foggy London thoroughfares can be as treacherous as the narrow, twisting alleyways of Cairo after dark--when a perpetrator of evil deeds sets his murderous sights on his relentless pursuer...Amelia Peabody!

Why I love Amelia Peabody Mysteries: 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Reading an Amelia Peabody Mystery is like having a favorite meal. You don't have to have it every day but when you do, it is always satisfying and delicious. You can go weeks or months between this meal and yet just thinking about it will make you salivate. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL by the venerable Elizabeth Peters is number 8 in her Amelia Peabody series of eighteen or so little novels. Peter's books are so easy to read and very easy to get into. You can pick them up and become interested on the first page. They are really ideal 'beach' or 'vacation' books because they are so straightforward and uncomplicated to read, even with a multitude of interruptions. Plus, I can read a book in the series and not read another one for weeks or months and know that I can get right back into these little stories with no problem. In addition, THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL has a glossary in the beginning that identifies all the characters.

Thankfully, the entire family is together for the 'season' of excavating in Egypt and that makes me happy. Last year the children--Ramses, the 12 year-old boy genius and his adopted sister (a miniature Amelia, who at fifteen is quite the beauty) Nefret, were left at Aunt Evelyn & Uncle Walter's estate in England. David, an Egyptian orphan has been added to this entourage as well. Evelyn and Walter also lend their services in the excavation of this new tomb, supposedly of Queen Tetisheri. Since we are so familiar with this family, having met the four adults thirteen years previously during their courtship (in Egypt, of course), there is something very comfortable about rejoining the group.

Naturally we have the usual murders, kidnappings, grave robbers and undercover criminals. We still have the tender yet cantankerous Emerson and his no nonsense verrrry British wife Amelia who is still anticipating every move. But the children are the ones who add a delightful diversion to this adorable little mystery. And, as always, we know that everything will come out all right in the end. Every time I read a book in this series, it is like rejoining an old friend (or having a favorite meal;-)

Editorial Review:

Amelia, her husband Emerson, their son Ramses, and their ward Nefret return to Egypt for a royal excavation, only to encounter art thieves, jealous colleagues, looters, the press, and evil-doers in this suspensful and exciting story. Reprint. NYT. "

A little different, but just as good 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog is a little different from the preceding books. Still, I enjoyed it at least as much. If you prefer Emerson and Amelia to Ramses, you'll rejoice at this book, where he provides some comic relief without hogging the story. In this one, you get to know Amelia a lot better. Since it's set in Amarna, not Luxor, it helps if you've read the first one because there's a lot of allusions.
In addition, it had a great climax and a magnificent ending. I really enjoyed this one - it might be one of my favorites.

AMELIA PEABODY, #7 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Elizabeth Peters has written another adorable little mystery in her Amelia Peabody series. The no nonsense, take charge, verrry British Amelia is spending another season in Egypt with her hunky, brilliant husband Radcliffe Emerson. And, the good news is that Ramses, her genius ten-year-old son is staying in England with his newly adopted sister at his Aunt and Uncle's castle. Ramses is a continuous source of exasperation to his mother who has little patience with her precocious son; subsequently she is thrilled to have her husband, Emerson all to herself. Even after eleven years of marriage, Amelia will melt while just looking at her husband's dimpled chin.

It is a good thing that 'Peabody' is so in love with Emerson because in this book, he is a lout! He acts like a spoiled, petulant child with no thought of anyone but himself. I really didn't like him at all. I am amazed at the devotion to Emerson from his wife and his devoted workers because he certainly doesn't deserve it. Of course, as usual for this series there is a lot of action that includes a kidnapping, amnesia, and impersonations.

I missed the romance between the main characters and I also missed Ramses. The best parts of the book were his letters to his mama and papa.
Although I loved reading this book (as I have this entire series), I really liked the first six books a tad better. Here's hoping #8-18 will be fabulous.

Editorial Review:

Calder Moor is a wild and deadly place: many have been trapped in the myriad limestone caves, lost in collapsed copper mines, injured on perilous gritstone ridges. But this time, when two bodies are discovered in the shadow of the ancient circle of stones known as Nine Sisters Henge, it is clearly not a case for Mountain Rescue. The corpses are those of a young man and woman. Each met death in a different fashion. Each died violently.

To Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, brought in to investigate by special request, this grisly crime promises to be one of the toughest assignments of his career. For the unfortunate Nicola Maiden was the daughter of a former officer in an elite undercover unit, a man Lynley once regarded as a mentor. Now, as Lynley struggles to find out if Nicola's killer was an enemy of her father's or one she earned herself, a disgraced Barbara Havers, determined to redeem herself in the eyes of her longtime partner, crisscrosses London seeking information on the second murder victim.

Yet the more dark secrets Lynley and Havers uncover, the more they learn that neither the victims nor the suspects are who they appear to be. And once again they come up against the icy realization that human relationships are often murderous...and that the blood that binds can also kill.

One of my favourite Elizabeth Peters books 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Ahhh, Peters is so, so great!

Anthropology grad student D.J. Abbott is a master procrastinator. She has left finding a summer job so late than when she sees her advisor about it, all that's left is an offer from well-known crackpot millionaire Hank Hunnicutt, who seems to believe in every weird theory floating about. Since it's an extremely generous offer, though, D.J. decides to apply for it (it doesn't hurt that Hunnicutt's Arizona ranch isn't within visiting distance from her parent's house, something very important for her).

Hunnicutt's already rejected a few applicants, but he accepts D.J., and so she heads over to Arizona. When she arrives, she finds the house full of assorted weirdos and a couple of extremely handsome men. She also meets the endearing Hank, who's very vague about the reason he wanted her at the ranch. He insists she rest and relax and enjoy the amenities until a certain gadget arrives... then he'll show her his discovery.

But soon thereafter, after a couple of suspicious accidents, Hank vanishes, and it falls to D.J. and a few allies to find out what happened to him... and which of the nuts might have had a reason to make him disappear.

Summer of the Dragon has three strengths which are the reason I love this author so much. First, there's the characters. Peters is a master at creating fascinating, three-dimensional, fresh secondary characters, and she's not bad with her protagonists, either! Each of the weirdos in residence has a distinct personality, and they are, every one of them, loads of fun. As for D.J. and her romantic interest (whose identity I won't reveal here, though anyone familiar with her books will probably deduce it the minute he shows up), they're great. I especially loved the way D.J. was a declared feminist and refused to take any silliness from anyone (remember this is a 1979 book, so she's a very unique heroine that way), and the way Peters wrote her total enjoyment of food... and her guy's reaction to this!

Second, I absolutely adore Peters' writing. She's got a wonderful sense of humour, and this shows through, not only in extremely funny scenes, but also in the very way she puts things. If you want to see what I mean and haven't yet tried this author (what are you waiting for?), just go use the Look inside feature amazon offers and read the first couple of pages.

Third, Peters' plots are always enormously entertaining, and I always love her mix of adventure and archeological and historical elements. Summer of the Dragon wasn't an exception. It takes a while to get to what's going on, but once we do get there, it's fascinating, as is the setting!

Editorial Review:

A good salary and an all-expenses-paid summer spent a sprawling Arizona ranch is too good a deal for fledgling anthropologist D.J. Abbott to turn down. What does it matter that her rich new employer/benefactor, Hank Hunnicutt, is a certified oddball who is presently funding all manner of off-beat projects, from alien conspiracy studies to a hunt for dragon bones? There's even talk of treasure buried in the nearby mountains, but D.J. isn't going to allow loose speculation -- or the considerable charms of handsome professional treasure hunter Jesse Franklin -- to sidetrack her. Until Hunnicutt suffers a mysterious accident and then vanishes, leaving the weirdos gathered at his spread to eye each other with frightened suspicion. But on a high desert search for the missing millionaire, D.J. is learning things that may not be healthy for her to know. For the game someone is playing here goes far beyond the rational universe -- and it could leave D.J. legitimately dead.

The Lethal Stuff of Legends

For Jessica Tregarth, an unexpected invitation to visit her grandfather in England is a wonderful surprise -- an opportunity to open doors to a family past that have always been closed to her. But sinister acts greet her arrival. A stranger tries to steal her luggage and later accosts her in Salisbury Cathedral. Mysterious villains pursue her through Cornwall, their motive and intentions unknown. Jessica's only clue is an antique heirloom she possesses, an ancient ring that bears the Tregarth family crest. And her only ally is handsome gothic novelist David Randall -- her self-proclaimed protector -- who appears from seemingly out of nowhere to help her in her desperate -- attempt to solve a five hundred-year-old, puzzle. For something from out of the cloudy mists of Arthurian lore has come back to plague a frightened American abroad. And a remarkable truth about a fabled king and a medieval treasure could ultimately make Jess Tregarth very rich...or very dead.

Won't be finishing this book 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've read 300 of the 362 pages and I can't be bothered to finish.

Not particularly well written. The secondary characters are un-developed and annoying... in fact, the same can be said for the main characters. I don't care what happens to them. I don't care about finding out what the "mystery" is. I can't figure out how they could possibly have fallen in love. The author just springs it on you. It's a bit insulting to the reader, in fact.

The heroine is passive and whiny... "[spies (or whatever) are following me and I'm going to do nothing about it except wait for them to spring on me at every tourist site and "ruin" the tourist experience for me.]"

This is my first book by this author, and unless I forget her name (it's a very bland, forgettable name) and accidentally buy something by her again, it is the last.

I'm really glad I only paid a buck for it.

Editorial Review:

It was the start of a grand adventure in a land of antiquity, a rare opportunity to visit biblical places shrouded in mystery. But in a Jerusalem hotel room a world away from everything she knows, Dinah van der Lyn hears angry voices through the wall, followed by a crash and a brief cry in English...for help! The brutal shattering of an evening's stillness becomes a prelude to terror. Without warning, Dinah has been unwittingly pulled into something unholy transpiring in a sacred city, and she must find answers hidden in the shadows. And she must trust an enigmatic stranger as she races through ancient, twisting streets teeming with secrets and peril, a man who may be leading her to safety...or to her doom.
