A combo of Nick, Nora, and Kay Scarpetta, a la Cleveland! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book. The author obviously had a warm-hearted upbringing. I particularly liked empathizing with his references to his family life. The next in the Plato series, it flirts with evolving the "well-nourished"/skulldugger into a character who loses as well as wins. But how does he manage to attract so many women?

Medical Mystery 4 out of 5 stars.

If you like medical mysteries, then add this to your list. Here we have a husband named Plato who is a geriatrician and a wife named Cal who is a forensics pathologist. This time out the two are trying to find out how one of Plato's favorite patients ends up as a cadaver at the medical school. Lots of information on how medications are developed. Good read, however could of used better editing. (this if for the paperback edition)

Editorial Review:

Dr. Calista Marley, a forensic pathologist and Cleveland's deputy coroner, joins forces with her physician husband, Plato, to investigate the mysterious death of a talented drug researcher, one of Plato's favorite former patients.

Average Entry in the "Cozy" Genre 3 out of 5 stars.

Bill Pomidor is a physician, as is his wife, so it's no surprise that his crimebusters are likewise. Calistra Marley is a forensic pathologist, and hubby Plato (that's right) is a geriatrician, a doctor who specializes in the treatment of the elderly.

This first mystery establishes right away how "perfect" and "cute" Cal and Plato are for each other. Sometimes this cuteness becomes tedious, but at the same time, their love for each is refreshing and necessary to make this type of fiction work.

In this story, our heroes are attending a geriatrics conference at a rambling lodge outside of Cleveland (a novel setting, to say the least). Assembled there are various physicians, some of them with dark secrets, others just out and out cantankerous, conceited, or obnoxious. When one of the physicians dies under mysterious circumstances, our heroes jump in to see if homicide was prescribed. And then, another physician---a pretty obnoxious one----meets his fate mysteriously on the tennis court. Now homicide seems a definite occurrence.

The murder weapon was obvious to me right away, and the identity of the killer, as well, although Pomidor does throw a few red herrings here and there.

The resolution is kind of fitting, and all in all, this is an entertaining, if not exciting or original, entry in the medical cozies. I've noticed that Pomidor hasn't written any more in this series since 1998?

I wouldn't rush out to buy this, but if you like an easy read, it's enjoyable.

The Marleys',a doctor couple, investigate another murder 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Calista Marley is an anatomy professor, county deputy coroner and practicing pathologist. He husband Plato is a family physician, who specializes in geriatrics. Both their lives are extremely busy as they constantly try to cope with life and death issues. Plato is currently going through a rough period because one of his favorite patients insist on being allowed to die without medical intervention so that her suffering will end. The empathetic healer finds it extremely difficult to abide by her wishes, just as he has trouble coming to terms with the fact that his beloved pet is terminally ill. The Marleys need a good murder investigation to get their minds off their woes and as luck would have it (unless your the victim) one comes along when a headless, dissected body is found at the Cleveland Medical School that they are both associated with. The mystery is further complicated when a collection of bones that the school donates to a museum turns up four unaccounted bodies. This leads the police and the Marleys to wonder if there is a link between the dug up body and the extra skeletons. Matters turn more grisly when a hematologist is found clubbed to death. The deceased professor's partner is being sued for malpractice. They were working on an experimental drug that is being given to some of Plato's terminally ill patients. As the sleuthing doctors try to connect all the various puzzle pieces to obtain a true picture of the killer, they run the risk of becoming the villain's next victims. Bill Pomidor, a physician himself, writes with compassion and empathy, giving his audience a true and troubling picture into the moral dilemmas confronting physicians. The audience feels a bit more sympathetic to the impersonal practitioner and totally surprised by the villain. The storyline in SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET is set up in such way that it is almost impossible to figure out who did it and why. However, once the answers are revealed, it makes perfect sense. The verbal interactions between the married protagonists provide a much needed sense of humor so that the emotionally intense situations do not overwhelm the reader. This "Cal and Plato Marley Mystery" book is another winner in a delightful series. Harriet Klausner

The best yet in this medical mystery series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A married couple work at Cleveland Riverside General Hospital. Dr. Plato Marley is the chief of the geriatrics department and her spouse Dr. Cal Marley is the head of pathology. With the incomes of two physicians, the average American would believe that the duo would have no financial problems. However, in reality the Marleys have two mortgages and student loans which has led to her working three part-time jobs and him being employed at two full time jobs. Adding to their worries is that rumors are flying that the hospital is about to downsize. When the hospital's CEO, Dr. Wallace, orders his nine section chiefs to a company retreat, the Marleys are in attendance.

The weekend turns into a total disaster when Dr. Wallace dies from a severe allergic reaction. Soon afterward, a second doctor dies in an alcoholic related car accident. Cal conducts an autopsy that leads him to conclude that the doctor died from a blow to the head with the alcohol intravenously injected into his blood. When two more doctors die, everyone realizes that a serial killer is on the loose, one who not yet finished playing his deadly game.

Without trying, the Marleys always end up in the midst of a homicide investigation, but this time in TEN LITTLE MEDICINE MEN, they are trying to ferret out one of their own. The actions and reactions are very believable, turning readers into fans rooting for the couple to uncover the identity of the psycho. The autopsies are a bit graphic (don't eat lunch just before these scenes), but this twist on Agatha Christie's classic remains an enjoyable and intellectual challenge.

When the medical center announces massive cutbacks, two hospital Chiefs suspiciously fall victim to fatal accidents. Now the Marleys must solve this growing mystery, before they become permanently downsized as well.

Fifth book in series of medical mysteris is best yet. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Calista Marley is a deputy coroner while her husband Plato specializes in geriatrics. They are planning a wonderful Christmas in Cleveland where they work until a mentally ill prisoner convicted of being the "West End Strangler" escapes and makes a beeline for Cal who was a witness for the prosecution. This is an exciting tale with great characters and a fair share of laughs in spite of the brutal murders. Most memorable in this book is Jimmy, the escaped prisoner. Pomidor draws a convincing and compassionate portrayal of one mentally ill man. Read this and you'll want to buy the whole series.

Editorial Review:

Just when sleuthing Drs. Plato and Cal Marley decide to cut back on work and focus on family, Cal's life is threatened by an escaped mental patient she helped put away for murder three years ago. Reflecting back on the case, however, leads Cal to believe that maybe not all was as open-and-shut as it had seemed. As the duo's investigation continues, and inconsistencies in the original evidence arise, the escapee's psychiatrist turns up dead. But why? Is it simple revenge, or the act of an unknown killer determined to continue framing an innocent man?.
