Great thriller 5 out of 5 stars.

A decade or so back, I read a few serial-killer thrillers by a writer named Brian Harper. They were entertaining enough, but after a few books, he seemed to disappear. When I did a little research, I found he was still around but working under another name: Michael Prescott. The name may have changed, but as shown in Final Sins, he is still delivering the goods.

Final Sins opens with Abby Sinclair being hired by Peter Faust. Sinclair, a recurring Prescott character, does private security work, and she is being employed by Faust to stop a man who is stalking his girlfriend. Abby has qualms, however. Faust is a convicted killer who ten years earlier was caught and arrested in Germany, where lax laws and good connections kept him locked up only briefly. Faust now lives in Los Angeles and revels in his reputation as an amoral murderer. His Euro-snobbish intellectualism has given him a nice following among various fringe elements, making him a sort of high-end (and free) Charles Manson. Abby takes on the job reluctantly, only because she feels sorry for the girlfriend.

Abby is sharp enough to track down the stalker easily enough, though he doesn't fit the usual insane loner stereotype. Instead, Mark Brody, an ex-Green Beret, seems well-adjusted. Abby gets closer to him than is professionally responsible and soon enough finds out there is more to Brody than what there appears to be, and the other parts are not good. His stalking is part of a more complicated thing, and Abby's involvement will get her suspected of a murder and on the run from the FBI, including her one-time friend, Tess McCallum (another recurring Prescott character).

Prescott is once again on his game in this novel, keeping things moving at a nice clip and rarely letting up on the suspense. This is what I think of as a roller coaster book; a lot of fun while it's going on, but after a little while, almost forgotten. That's okay, however: you don't read these sorts of books looking for profound insights, but for fun. And as stated before, Prescott delivers as well as always.

Editorial Review:

A decade ago, artist Peter Faust murdered a woman and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Today, unrepentant and living in L.A., he's become a cult celebrity among the radical fringe. When one of his fans appears to be stalking him, he hires rogue security consultant Abby Sinclair for protection. Unfortunately for Abby, her longtime adversary, FBI agent Tess McCallum, also gets drawn into the case. Both are about to discover the true meaning of evil.

Highly Recommended! 4 out of 5 stars.

Well, I'm impressed! I am a pretty jaded mystery reader, but Prescott managed to fake me out with this book. I liked it a lot, and wholeheartedly recommend it to lovers of good mysteries.
The heroine is Abby Sinclair. She is a hunter of stalkers. She insinuates herself into their lives and collects information that will bring them down before they can claim a victim. Abby is bright, extremely competent and amazingly resourceful. Prescott's villian, Raymond Hickle, is believable and well written, as is Hickle's quarry, a beautiful TV news reporter. This book is suspenseful, carefully crafted, gracefully written, and is guaranteed to keep you reading non stop until the end. I hope Prescott sees fit to bring Abby back in a sequel. Meanwhile, I have ordered his other three novels.

Editorial Review:

Abby Sinclair hunts stalkers, bringing them down before they explode. And when the stalker of a television news anchor steps out from the shadows, Abby moves in--for the kill....

Praise for Michael Prescott:

"With Comes the Dark, Michael Prescott delivers a harrowing thriller of the first order. His characters are flesh-and-blood real, the atmosphere's intense, and the plot races along unceasingly." --Jeffery Deaver, author of The Devil's Teardrop

Sometimes, in the course of reading the work of a talented author who thinks up good concepts, knows the mechanics of good storytelling, writes interesting dialogue, and creates compelling characters, one has to wonder how much creative control they actually have and how much better they could've made their book if left to their own expert devices instead of being comprised by editorial micro-managing. I got an inkling of how Alex Kava's light was obscured by the editorial bushel while reading SPLIT SECOND and I couldn't help but speculate on the same thing while reading Michael Prescott's latest thriller (he'd wanted to name it WIPEOUT but the publisher choose the breathtakingly bland NEXT VICTIM).

A woman on the run from the FBI is carrying a canister of VX nerve agent and is intercepted by a serial killer, who then absconds with it and plans to use it on an unsuspecting Los Angeles. This is the best concept in recent fiction since Jan Burke's BONES (2001).

Not all the book's flaws can be blamed on editing, however- as one reviewer rightly posits, Mobius suffers from the talking villain syndrome, whereas the pieces could've come together in a more organic way, through skillful exposition or having Special Agent Tess McCallum, the book's heroine, tell the reader in her POV. Also, in the ATSAC HQ, Tess is actually relieved when it turns out that Mobius has VX in his possession, instead of the ebola that Tess had feared. I don't know of a single human who would ever be relieved to be dealing with VX, surely the deadliest substance ever engineered by Man.

But NEXT VICTIM'S virtues far outweigh its flaws and the characterization of the principals is good enough to garner sympathy for both antagonist and protagonist. and, while it's obligatory for the heroine to engage the villain in the Endgame in which the heroine (of course) wins, Prescott thankfully was able to break away from his usual DIE HARD-esque ending that involves a tall, abandoned/unfinished building to give the reader a more novel denouement.

As usual, I'll be on the lookout for the talented Prescott's next outing, hoping for both a hardcover deal for him and less editorial interference.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestselling author of Comes the Dark, Stealing Faces, The Shadow Hunter, and Last Breath, "Michael Prescott has managed to delve into the depths of the most twisted minds" (Publishers Weekly). This time Michael Prescott really outdoes himself as an FBI agent closes in on the serial killer who murdered her lover-just as the killer gets his hands on a chemical weapon that could raise his body count...to thousands of victims.

Unbelievable 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe someone over 17 could be entertained by this. How about some realism for once!
Many things in the book would never happen. Therefore, it totally killed the story midway through the book for me.
It's sad to think people are entertained by such a weak job, almost like the movie Face Off or something. Often I like the Vintage Collection books and they're not as exciting but at least they are realistic.

Not bad, kept turning pages quickly most of the time. 4 out of 5 stars.

I give it 4 stars because at one point the book lost my interest for a brief moment. I love a story when it rolls, keeps my suspense up, this didn't do it for me at some point in the book. Loved the beginning chapter, ending was good as well. This book is not very gory but a great thriller read.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

Everything about this book was excellent. I think what made it a really good book for me to read was I live in Tucson, Arizona, and have been on several occasions to the White Mountains and Safford. Because of this I could picture exactly where the story was taking place and so on. This book was very real to me!!

This is my second book I read of Michael Prescott; like "Comes the Dark" the suspense is palpable. I read many fiction thrillers and must rank this author way on top of the list because he really knows how to thrill the reader. I also like his dipping into Greek mythology and bringing parallels to the old heroes and heroines in our lives' conflicts. If you like to turn pages fast while reading, this man is for you.

Deep and penetrating! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a true crime writer myself, I enjoy reading fiction occasionally. This book was recommended highly to me by a friend who said that it was scary in a whole new way and he was right! This book was fictionally innovative and provocative. It stayed with me even when I wasn't reading it and, of course, I transfixed 'til the very end.
Quite an accomplishment for such a young and prolific writer! I hope the next one is as good as this.

Prescott Rules 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I read this book in only two sittings because I could not put it down. Prescott brings back two of his more interesting characters, Tess McCallum, FBI agent and Abby Sinclair, "The Shadow Hunter." As expected, the two women do not get along very well when hunting down a serial killer but they must learn to work together in accomplishing this feat.

The book had a good combination of action, humor and sadness. The exchanges between Tess McCallum and her boss, "The Nose" are classics. They had me rolling on the floor.

Prescott is slowly becoming one of the my favorite mystery writers.

Editorial Review:

A killer is using labyrinthine storm drains to dispose of his victims, who are found handcuffed and drowned, washed out of the rain-filled drainage lines like garbage. The crimes compel FBI Agent Tess McCallum to crack the case, but they're touching a nerve in Personal Security Consultant Abby Sinclair. She fears it's the same madman who invaded her nightmares once before. As the two women work with each other to solve the case, tensions rise and tempers flare. And as sure as the rain, a new killing season begins.

More of a character story than a thriller 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For a story that closely follows the events of a single day, it's ironic that the only interesting parts of this narrative take place in the past. From the teaser on the back cover and the first hundred pages, you'd think the meatiest aspect of this story is the race to prevent a crazed killer from claiming another victim before the end of day. Instead, this aspect of the story is surprisingly mundane. The identity of the killer is revealed early in the story, and it's at this point that the story begins to lag. The revelation, by itself, isn't necessarily a mistake. Detective shows on TV do it all the time, and the story then focuses on figuring out how the murder was committed and the investigative work involved. This story, however, offers none of that. The killer is the only suspect, his actions will inevitably lead the police to arrest him, and the only reason the police don't arrest him is the fear they won't be able to find where he's hidden his next victim. The real meat of the story focuses on the relationships between the primary characters and why the killer is driven to murder. As the story unfolds, the motivations of the characters are slowly revealed, primarily through flashbacks and other revelations of the characters' past. The final revelations at the end of the story are well done and fully explain the motivations of the killer, but at that point it's not enough to have made the read worthwhile.

This book is a great read from beginning to end. The entire book takes place over a couple days so its packed with dialgue and action. The characters are interesting and the plot is solid. I look forward to reading more from Michael Prescott!

I cannot comprehend why any (somewhat intelligent) reader would Like this book. Perhaps this book was beneath my reading standards. I found it irritating and poorly written. I am usually kind to authors, especially when it's my first book by that author. This book,it's story line, plot were predictiable and trite, the pathetic nature of the characters, was very DISAPPOINTING. I bought this book, hardcover full price due to reviews, well I say shame shame reviewers, what a rip off.
The characters who were purposed to be intelligent and emotional, were... well.... Quite... STUPID, UNREALISTIC and I have seen more emotion in a rock, more intelligence in a Ham. I do not wish to attack Mr. Prescott's writting, and I so hope that his other books are more substancial. Yet this book I have to say is well NOT EVEN OKAY (to me that is).Give Me Break!
The senerio, the research the premise, well my opinion is , HATED IT. Perhaps for a simple reader it is acceptable. Wouldn't recommend to a fourth grade reading level prison inmate. Sorry!

Editorial Review:

Alex stared at the red pocketknife shown to him by his daughter. A pocketknife owned by somebody he hadn’t seen in years...

-Children-

They met first in boarding school at age twelve. AlexFletcher, shy and scared. Darren Rust, always furiously scribbling away in a private journal. It was not an immediate friendship, but then one night Darren convinced his roommate to sneak off school grounds to see something glorious. There was a sleazy strip club, you see, and every once in a while the back door opened just long enough to maybe catch a quick glimpse... Though a bond was formed from their pre-pubescent interest in naked women, Darren had another interest. A morbid curiosity about death. A curiosity that turned into something much more sinister.

-Friends-

They crossed paths again in college and became the best of friends. But Darren wasn’t just looking for a friend. He had dark, ghastly urges squirming around in his head, and he believed he saw the same things — the urge to hurt, the urge to kill — in Alex. He was looking for somebody who understood. A partner. But Alex could never become a monster. Not even when Darren tried to bring out his friend’s most deeply buried feelings of rage. Not even when Darren tried to show him the euphoria of having that much power over another human being. It just couldn’t happen...right?

-Enemies-

Now Alex has a wife and a daughter. And Darren is back. He’s hiding. He’s patient. His mind is twisted in the worst possible way.

And he’s seeking a soul mate.

Good way to spend the weekend 4 out of 5 stars.

I first stumbled across Mr. Prescott at my library when I was looking for a good mystery to read. My first book by him was The Last Victim. Since reading that novel, I've read his other books. Mortal Faults did not disappoint. It was fast-paced full of twists and turns. The bottom line is do you trust your friends? Caution: never turn your back on your enemies. Read it and be prepared to give up your day to finish it.

Overly embellished professional vigilantism 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Michael Prescott's "Mortal Faults" is an over the top tale surrounding the exploits of main character Abby Sinclair. Sinclair considers herself to be a personal security consultant. Using a combination of a psychology degree, martial arts training and street smarts she gets hired to stalk stalkers and get them to cease and desist their aberrant behavior.

Abby was hired by California congressman Jack Reynolds, a middle aged ex-quarterback type who was in the midst of campaigning for re-election. Reynolds had been stalked by a woman he claimed was a disgruntled ex-employee. Little did Abby know that the congressman's fabricated facade covered the fact that he was a manipulative, sadistic, misogynist who had made some perculiar friends when he was D.A. for Santa Ana county.

The woman Abby was assigned to stalk was named Andrea Lowry and was already under surveillance by the FBI. Agent Tess McCallum who had against regulations partnered with Abby, a civilian, in an investigation of a serial murder case was involved in the case. Lowry had changed her name to hide that notoriety that followed her as being the main player in a double homicide, 20 years ago known by the FBI as the MEDEA case. The case had negative ramifications for Congressman Reynolds.

To protect himself, Reynolds mobilized a local biker club, The Scorpions, whom he had used many times to violently cleans up his messes, to kill Andrea Lowry. Abby caught in the crossfire and after learning the truth allied with Lowry to once and for all take down the congressman, without incurring the wrath of Agent McCallum.

What hurts this novel is its total lack of plausibility. Prescott tends to overexaggerate the nuances of his characters. For example he overdoes it when painting Reynolds as the most despicable villian to walk the face of the earth. He also adorns Abby Sinclair with superhuman acumen in her ventures, painting only Agent McCallum as a normal and believable person.

Editorial Review:

A one-woman private operative, Abby Sinclair stalks the stalkers. Her new client is a U.S. congressman shadowed by a mystery woman believed to be a disgruntled ex-employee. He wants her stopped. What Abby doesn't know is that FBI agent Tess McCallum is already on the case. Now, despite vowing never to work together again, Abby and Tess have been partnered in a deadly game. And this is a case that takes one surprising turn after another-because there's more to the story than anyone knows.
