A Busman's Vacation with a Little Help from Kerry Wade 5 out of 5 stars.

In 1971, author Bill Pronzini was only 27 when he wrote The Snatch, building on a shorter and different version of the story that appeared in the May 1969 issue of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine under the same title. With the publication of The Snatch, one of detective fiction's great characters was born with full fledged power and authenticity. If you have not yet read the 25 plus Nameless Detective novels by Mr. Pronzini, you have a major treat ahead of you. Many of these are now out-of-print, so be sure to check your library for holdings in near-by cities.

The Nameless Detective is referred to that way because Mr. Pronzini never supplies a name until Twospot, several books prior in the series, when police lieutenant Frank Hastings tells what his poker playing friends call Nameless, employing a first name. But it's never acknowledged by Nameless that this is his name . . . so it's probably a nickname. That name is not then used again until much later in the series in this book. You can learn about why Nameless has no name in an author's note in Case File, a collection of short stories that precedes this book.

Mr. Pronzini presents a world in which people take evil actions to further selfish interests, and many innocents struggle because of that selfishness. The police and private investigators suffer along with the victims, for evil-doing has painful consequences for everyone. Mr. Pronzini's plots are complex, yet he provides plenty of clues to help you identify the evil-doer on your own. Despite the transparency of many of the early plots, he successfully uses plot complications to keep the action interesting and fresh. Beginning with Labyrinth, the plots became less simple.

But the reason to read the books is because of the character development for the Nameless Detective. Nameless is a former police officer in San Francisco who collects pulp fiction about tough private detectives. Overcome by the evil he sees as a police officer and drawn to the complex imagery of the strong, silent hero who rights wrongs, Nameless tries to live that role as a private detective. But he has trouble getting clients, and operating as a one-man shop causes him to lead a lonely existence. In his personal life, his career keeps women at a distance. Beginning with Hoodwink, he has a love interest, Kerry Wade, who is the daughter of two ex-pulp authors. Like a medieval knight errant, he sticks to his vows and pursues doing the right thing . . . even when it doesn't pay. At the same time, he's very aware of art, culture and popular trends. And he doesn't like much of what he sees. He's also skeptical about technology, and doesn't want to become a snooper using electronic gadgets. He's a proud Italian in his 50's, could stand to lose some weight, and is really messy. So there's an element of Don Quixote here, too.

The books are also written in a more sophisticated version of the pulp fiction style, employing a better writing style and greater range through language and plot. The whole experience is like looking at an image in a series of mirrors that reflect into infinity.

These books are a must for those who love the noir style and the modern fans of tough detectives with a heart of gold like Spenser . . . and can live without the wise cracks and repartee. Beginning with Scattershot though, the books increasingly contain witty references to early mysteries and their characters.

In Nightshades, we find a strong element of humor which provides a nice change of pace. While Nameless is often self-critical of his abilities as a detective, Nightshades brings that point to life by having Kerry Webb upstage him in handling witnesses and solving the mystery.

The book begins as Nameless is introduced to Musket Creek, an old Gold Rush mining town that was then known as "Ragged-A__ Gulch." There's a conflict, though. Nameless is due to go on vacation with Kerry Webb. The case seems simple enough. He's supposed to check out an accidental death before the insurance company pays off on the double indemnity policy. Kerry is open to the idea of coming along, and Nameless takes the case.

Arriving in the area, Nameless finds he's in the middle of a classic California conflict . . . land developers against the local, long-term residents of a beautifully unspoiled area. The accidental death has taken the life of the president of the land development company. The residents clearly hate the developers. Could the two situations be connected?

The residents don't want to have anything to do with Nameless, but Kerry is able to make progress by bending the rules. Nameless finds that he doesn't enjoy her "help" and their relationship begins to fray. The situation isn't at all what it seems, and as the danger builds Nameless finds himself in fear for both Kerry's and his life.

In many of the best books in the series, Mr. Pronzini develops a unique sense of place. Nightshades is one of his most successful books in that dimension. You'll feel like you're walking down the streets of the ghost town as the story develops.

The book also opens up a new story line about Kerry's ex-husband that you will enjoy over the next few books in the series.

After finishing the book, I was reminded of the French concept of the "juste mileau" (loosely translated as the right balance) and how often we create problems by trying to do too much . . . too fast.

What Does Justice Require? 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Quarry is a major turning point in the Nameless Detective series. In many of the books beginning with Quarry, women are victimized by men in particularly unpleasant ways. Legal options are probably not going to be adequate to protect the women in the future. Nameless will find himself drawn to wanting to do the right thing, and looking beyond the boundaries of the law to do so. As a result, Nameless becomes more human and appealing as he wrestles with his conscience.

The book is set both in San Francisco and in the Salinas valley (and contains the inevitable references to Steinbeck). The local color is particularly strong in this book which adds to its appeal.

The mystery plot is a minimalist one which allows for more emphasis on psychology and action. It's a good choice by Mr. Pronzini.

Ailing farmer Arlo Haas knows something's wrong when his daughter Grady returns home unexpectedly. Always a loner, she's extremely uncommunicative, but it's clear she is troubled. And she doesn't want to do anything about what is troubling her. Arlo offers to pay Nameless to drive down to the farm to discuss the problem. Nameless takes the case, but cannot get any information out of Grady either. Although she's alive, she might as well be dead for all of the help she provides Nameless.

Speaking with her employer, Nameless is hard pressed to find any clues. There may have been a new man in her life. But who is he? Is he the right quarry?

Nameless's partner Eberhardt has been proposing to his girl friend Bobbie Jean for some time. She's now accepted his proposal, despite her concerns about her former two unsuccessful marriages. But Eberhardt is driving everyone crazy with the wedding plans, which keep getting more elaborate and expensive. The stress becomes too much for everyone, and leads to an emotional explosion. What will be the consequences?

Fans of the early Nameless Detective novels will continue to recognize the noir style, and may like seeing Nameless as a heat seeking missile doling out justice on his own. That's certainly consistent with the original hard-boiled detective novels. On the other hand, it also represents a loss of innocence that makes the books more cynical. Some may enjoy that aspect less well. In either case, you owe it to yourself to read Quarry to decide.

Increasingly, this series doesn't make a lot of sense unless you have read earlier books. I suggest that you read Dragonfire and Shackles before this one.

Fans of Sue Grafton will enjoy comparing this book to Q Is for Quarry.

As I finished this book, I thought about how much we can hope to protect others from harm. How much pain can we personally absorb to do so? What's the right thing to do when the personal pain will be enormous?

THE LAST SOLO 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Against his better judgement and the advice of his friends, Nameless decides to take on a partner, his old friend Eberhardt. Gone are the fourteen years of him being the lone wolf detective but before he makes the final commitment he has just one more case to solve.

It is an easy case. Find out who is sending unwanted gifts to his client. What could be simpler? As Nameless finds out there is no such thing as a simple case. His clients previous lovers and aquaintances leads him into the world of Japanese American culture. Travel with him to San Francisco's Japantown where he finds himself confronting the Yakazu, the equivilent of the Italian Mafia. While there he finds the hacked up body of one of its members which further leads him into a search where bizarre things from the past make their mark.

Pronzini takes us on a great adventure with Nameless in exploring the secrets of the relocation centers for Japanese-Americans during World War II and the psychological damage that experience has on the present. Nameless encounters a web of interconnected murders which lead back to his client. Why they are happening and the connection to the relocation camps is a mystery that only Nameless can solve.

Quicksilver is a thriller which will keep you guessing but will also make you aware of the shameful incident in the United State's past. Nameless takes us down this dangerous and convoluted pathway where there may not be an easy return. I enjoyed this thriller because it wove an important historical event with the plot. I appreciated the tension built up in the characters as they deal with theirnown demons. Pronzini's characterization of Japanese Americans can come across as stereotypical but the basic plot remains strong. You will find yourself totally immersed in this great adventure of Nameless's last solo case.

Review by Allen P. Bristow, author of THE PINKERTON EYE 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This master storyteller has crafted another masterpiece. The tale could fit in either the "Detective" or "Western" genre and is set in the silver mining area of Idaho's Owyhee Mountains. Pronzini devotes great effort to technical accuracy and lifestyles of the 1890's. In addition to pleasing the reader he educates on the details of counterfeiting, opium addiction and silver mining. His principal character, as in THE PINKERTON EYE, is an imperfect and flawed detective that manages to succeed despite his faults. This is an excellent story and I recommend it highly.

I've been too busy to think about whiskey." 5 out of 5 stars.

"He belonged to no part of society, not anymore. He was a man alone, who
answered to no one on this earth, not even the United States
Government;who would answer only to God."

It wasn't the author's name or even the title that attracted me to this book;because, quite frankly they were both unfamiliar to me. I read a lot of Westerns, and particularly like some of the great artwork on the covers. It was the artwork that immediately caught my attention in this case.
If you've read any of my reviews, particularly those on the "Longarm" or "Trailsman" series;you will see that I prefer Westerns that stick with being a Western and are not too much of a Mystery,Detective or a Whodunnit.I prefer to have the outlaw pretty well identified early on,and then a fast-action saga, with lots of gunslinging, street, canyon, and saloon fights and shoot-outs.This coupled with some near impossibl life threatning experiences of survival, all in the pursuit and bringing outlaws to justice in the Old West style. Therefore character development and description are more to my liking than mystery convolutions, analysis and explanations.I also like to find a good amount of history of the time sprinkled throughout ,yeah, some real and some stretched, and legendary.
This is the first novel I've read by Pronzini. He is a great writer;and keeps your interest flowing from beginning to end. This novel has a good storyline and the main character ,John Quincannon is a one of a kind.
You have to get used to the idea that he is not a Gunslinger,a Marshal,a Texas Ranger,or a Bounty Hunter ;but basically a Detective or sleuth working as an investigator for the Secret Service.
Historically, the Secret Service was created in Washington DC in 1865 (this story is set in 1893),with its prime function to protect against counterfeiting, and part of the Treasury Department. As the years went on, it was given the responsibility of protecting the President(after McKinley's Assassination). Then ,as the years went on, it also took up the role of many types of fraud, which has expanded greatly with the expansion of communications ,computers and electronics. In 2003 ,with the new War on Terrorism, they are now no longer under Treasury, but now in the Department of Homeland Security.
I very much enjoyed this historical element of this novel and in spite of my preferences;I found it a great read.
So;if you want to read a Western with a somewhat different slant, and you enjoy the combining of mystery and the Old West, with some interesting historical connotations thrown in,you should like this one.
The age of the Old West was coming to a rapid end at the time of this saga,1893.Though in this novel, the railroads and telegraph were still the modern thing, elecrticity, which would bring electric lighting, the telephone, motor vehicles and everything else, would result in unimaginable changes to the Old West, virtually overnight.
Little wonder Quincannon was ready for a lifestyle change at the end of the tale.

Editorial Review:

A troubled Secret Service agent is needed to bring down a major counterfeiting ring-a job that will force him to come face to face with his tragic past.
