Editorial Review:

Carolyn Sullivan, probation officer in Ventura County, California, has a lot on her plate. One of her probationers has just been arrested for rape, and she's got a court-mandated report to turn in. Then without warning, she's assigned a sensitive case that's sure to turn up the heat even more - supervising convicted killer Daniel Metroix. Twenty-three years ago, Metroix went to prison for the murder of a teenage boy. Metroix's file indicates that he's unpredictable and dangerous. But what's more unsettling is his claim that he's innocent - a claim that Carolyn tries to dismiss, until what should be a routine meeting erupts into an inferno that nearly kills them both. Now Carolyn is diving into a case that everyone else seems to want to keep closed...one that leads behind the glossy exteriors of Ventura's most prominent sons into the darkest corners of a killer's soul. Someone doesn't want the truth revealed. And that someone will strike at the heart of Carolyn's worst fear in an attempt to silence her for good.

Ridiculous and unbelievable--I'd give it minus 5 stars if possible 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Awful, awful, awful. Poor writing, an absurd plot, and too many imbecilic characters populate this poor excuse for a thriller. Again and again the characters do things that are unbelievable. Here's an example: After receiving a video of her boyfriend having sex with Melody and learning that Melody (who isn't really "Melody" but a sociopathic liar named Jessica whose story is as stupid as the rest of the book) might be the killer, Carolyn, our intelligence-challenged heroine, goes rushing over to confront Melody. After an inane conversation Carolyn sees that Melody is wearing the same watch that she (Carolyn) received for Christmas from said boyfriend. This helps Carolyn decide that Melody is not a threat. The finale is absolutely ludicrous. Don't waste your time on this.

Editorial Review:

Her work for the Ventura County Probation Department brings Carolyn Sullivan face-to-face with the most depraved criminals, and serial killer Raphael Moreno is at the top of the list. But things get even darker when a single phone call propels her into a nightmare. Carolyn's brother, Neil, has discovered the body of his girlfriend floating in his swimming pool - and he's soon the prime suspect in her murder. Neil has an alibi: he was in bed with celebrity heiress Melody Asher. But when Melody refuses to back up Neil's story and the evidence against him mounts, the brother Carolyn thought she knew suddenly seems like a complete stranger. The key to everything seems to be Moreno, but getting inside his head is a dangerous game. Now Carolyn must find the courage to make the ultimate decision - whether to risk the lives of innocent people or save herself and those she loves most...

Not worth the time 1 out of 5 stars.

It used to be that if I started a book I felt I had to finish it. Then I realized finishing a book that does not deserve to be read is a major waste of time. I found this book to be in the category of a major waste of time and I could not get past the halfway point. The characters are drawn too breathlessly with way too many adjectives. The lead character, Sullivan, who is billed as a savvy investigator with two children for whom she put her law school plans on hold, does some extremely stupid and unbelievable things. I guess this was meant to show how gutsy she was, but to my mind, the author has kind of run out of steam.

The author tries to gain our interest by including dark passages that intimate the murderer could possibly be her new love interest but the book couldn't hold my interest long enough for me to find out. I also couldn't figure out if there was more than one serial killer and I really was too bored to stick it out.

All in all, the book was lame.

Editorial Review:

It's been ten years since Carolyn Sullivan helped put vicious murderer and serial rapist Carl Holden behind bars. Forensic evidence had him nailed dead to rights. But in a stunning turn of events, Holden is once again a free man - and Carolyn is his probation officer. To the state, Holden has served his time. To Carolyn, he represents a heinous miscarriage of justice. Then a body is found in the same location where Holden buried his first victim. As the dead count quickly mounts, everything Carolyn ever trusted as a professional is put to the test. With time running out, only the biggest gamble of her life can stop a ruthless killer - or bring alive her worst nightmare.

Editorial Review:

Flawed heroes (or heroines) are nothing new in fiction. But Lily Forrester, the protagonist of Nancy Rosenberg's new novel, Buried Evidence, has a few skeletons in her closet that rattle alarmingly when her ex-husband threatens to open the door to her past. Unless Lily uses her legal connections (she's a Santa Barbara district attorney) to get him out of a drunken vehicular homicide charge in Los Angeles, he'll rat on her to the authorities. To further complicate matters, Lily's daughter Shana, a UCLA student, is the only other suspect in the hit-and-run incident. When her ex is murdered shortly after Lily bails him out, Shana, who found her father's body, is again a suspect. And Shana's being stalked by the psychopath who raped both her and her mother six years ago. Add a wrongful murder, a retired cop who lied to protect Lily, and a rich, handsome, successful lawyer who's still in love with her even though he knows her darkest secrets (or maybe because of them), and you have enough ingredients to keep this racy mystery moving a lot faster than traffic on the California freeways. Rosenberg has a deft hand with pacing and plot, although her characters seem varnished with a moral gloss that's as thin as their emotional complexity. The relationship between Lily and Shana seems particularly one-dimensional given the traumatic events they've shared. Lily's moral compromises are never resolved, even after her lover clears her of a murder she did, in fact, commit. But Rosenberg's fans won't quibble with the outcome, and the former prosecutor's latest suspense thriller will doubtless win her a few more. --Jane Adams

Novel of pure vengeance 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

District Attorney Lily Forrester has recently been promoted to Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit. She is glad to get the appointment but it came at a high price. She is unhappy with her marriage and her relationship with her daughter is deteriorating day by day.

Lily decides to get a fresh start when she asks her husband for a divorce and move out to a new apartment. Her life is irrevocably changed when an intruder storms into her home and rapes both her and her daughter, Shana. Lily believes she recognizes her assailant as one of the case files she brought home from work. Without thinking it over she decides to go kill him. She tracks the suspect and shoots him dead without even flinching. She then erases all traces of evidence she can think of that might identify her. She will now try to continue her life and help her daughter.

Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. Both Lily and Shana are still traumatized by the events and they both disagree as to who raped them. Lily wonders if she has made a mistake now that there is a relentless cop investigating the case.

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg does a good job in applying what she knows in this novel. She has worked in law enforcement for many years and has dealt with sexual offenders. The victims and situations felt real as well as the emotional trauma Lily feels for her action. The novel reads like a Lifetime movie but it kept my interest.

Editorial Review:

Readers will want to rediscover the book that introduced attorney Lily Forrester. As the new Chief of the Sex Crimes Division, Lily is a champion of the modern legal system-until a brutal attack against her teenaged daughter and herself forces Lily to take the law into her own hands....

how is this a bestseller? 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I hate writing negative reviews, but really, I just can't think of anything very good to say about this book. The premise held a lot of promise - this is about a female cop dealing with rampant corruption within her police department. But I don't feel the novel lived up to the potential.

The plot was very over-the-top, I agree that it ...[should be]a "made-for-tv" kind of book... it seems to be made for an audience with a very short attention span.

The characterization was lacking... they included a woman who had an horrible childhood and was trying to deal with the world as a single mother, another single mom dealing with cancer, a man who left a difficult life in a third-world country to start a new life in America, and many others. Talk about potential! You'd expect that a "bestselling" author would be able to do something with these characters... but I personally found them stereotypical and one-dimensional.

Worst of all, the dialogue was forced and somewhat childlike. ...

Editorial Review:

Rachel Simmons joins the police department of her small California city expecting to serve her community. But no one prepares her for the kind of service she will be called on to perform – or the price she will have to pay for her values and integrity.

When she witnesses an incident of police corruption – and reports it – she must fight for her life and the safety of her loved ones against a host of unknown enemies.

Conflict of Interest 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Joanne Kuhlman has been through a lot the last couple of years. Her children were kidnapped by her husband who is now spending time in jail awaiting his trial for those charges plus embezzlement. Since their return, she has had nothing but trouble from her 15-year old daughter, Leah. The child adores her father and believes every word he said about Joanne while he had them hidden away from her.

Now, on top of the ongoing repercussions from that situation, she is faced with prosecuting three young men for armed robbery and car theft. The problem is, one of those men, Ian, is developmentally disabled. Ian's handsome attorney, Arnold Dreiser, is trying to convince Joanne that Ian was forced into the very small part he played in the robbery. Joanne, however, doesn't have the time or the inclination right now to be sympathetic or give Ian a chance.... at first.

When she finally relents to at least look at his school and psychological records, Joanne finds evidence that Arnold may be right. That possibility gets put on the back burner, however, when Ian turns up missing--presumably having gone on the run. His mother is convinced otherwise when she receives an anonymous phone call that her son has been murdered by his "buddies" and gives her an idea of where to search for his body.

Joanne is filled with guilt and finds herself facing more than one conflict of interest.... helping the mother of the boy she was prosecuting and falling in love with his attorney who has become her investigative partner. And while all of these things are happening, the unexpected is taking place right beneath their noses.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nancy Taylor Rosenberg almost joins the ranks of Brad Meltzer and John Grisham with this latest novel full of legal suspense. The one thing that holds her back is the plot that temporarily resembles Swiss cheese with all its holes. As the story unfolds, tidbits of intriguing information are laid out here and there that make the reader wonder if this is a sequel. Thankfully, a sprinkling of explanations is given for each unanswered question as the book progresses. The manner in which this is done, however, causes it to appear as though some of the information was put in as afterthoughts.
Approximately, 75 percent into the book, all the previous grievances will be forgotten as the reader is suddenly drawn into shocking situations. Events have twisted to reveal a secret that no one could have expected. And, although the ending tends to be a bit "too good to be true", the story evens out to be quite a pleasurable read indeed.
Editorial Review:
District Attorney Joanne Kuhlman is struggling to put her own life together after the trauma of retrieving her children from her ex-husband who had kidnapped them. Now she must make a decision that could end her career. While trying three defendants for robbery, Joanne discovers a far more serious crime may be unfolding. One of the defendants is ignorant of the true nature of the crime. His attorney and mother insist he was cruelly exploited by his crime partners. When the young man disappears, Joanne fears he may have been murdered in a ruthless act to silence him. Her sympathies for this defendant lead her to entangle herself with his attractive attorney and compromise her career so the truth may be revealed.
A real disappointment 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.
First and last of Rosenberg's I've read. I was surprised by the clumsiness of the plotting and characterization. The supposedly professional heroine has little to recommend her. I got to laughing on each new occasion that she forgot some critical fact or forgot to do something important--not looking at subpoenas, stuffing envelopes into her purse and forgetting about them. Even the police do a lot of ambling around, taking their time to deal with important tasks. It's not much fun to read a book where you're a step ahead of the supposedly competent characters throughout.
Editorial Review:
Nancy Taylor Rosenberg's earlier works, Mitigating Circumstances and Interest of Justice were suspense masterpieces with strong female characters. Now she's created one of her most sympathetic heroines in Ann Carlisle, a probation officer in danger from an unknown enemy who wants to harm her and her teenage son. What Ann doesn't know is whether this has something to do with one of her earlier cases -- or something to do with her husband, who vanished mysteriously four years ago. A drug dealer who saves her from a bullet has some grisly secrets of his own to hide, and Ann's lover grows more and more distant. Soon Ann realizes that she can trust no one, and must find her attacker alone.
Protagonist needs "VICTIM" stamped on forehead. 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.
If this book succeeds (and, judging by its sales, I guess itdoes), it can only be as "women's fiction." Though toutedas the only best-selling woman author of legal thrillers, Ms. Rosenberg has no feel for courtrooms or for legal issues. As this book opens, the she-ro, a judge, is lamenting having to throw out some evidence in a murder trial on a technicality. The evidence? A confession, the only link between the accused and the crime. The technicality? The police obtained their confession by torturing the accused -- beating him and breaking his arm. Thus, the author, and her judge protagonist, completely miss the point about co-erced confessions. Not only is it inhumane to beat confessions out of people, but there can be no confidence in the validity of any confession so obtained. This misunderstanding of legal issues causes the novel to fail as a legal thriller. For me, it fails as a woman-in-jeopardy novel as well. The judge allows herself to be victimized by almost everybody she comes into contact with, which makes it difficult to sympathize with her. When tradegy strikes, she drives very fast and hyperventilates. I don't read women's fiction. I understand that many of the bodice-ripper romance novels (at least at one time) followed a fairly predictable formula: A woman is raped at the beginning in the story and pursues her rapist through the rest of the book -- not for revenge, but because she has fallen in love with him. The bodice-rippers seem to have a huge following -- and I guess can see this book succeeding with the same audience, though surely with no other.
Editorial Review:
In Rosenberg's new novel, probation officer Carolyn Sullivan confronts the brutal death of her best friend - and the dark mystery that surrounds it. Carolyn knew everything about Veronica Campbell. She knew about the case of murder and retribution that haunted her life and career - about her stormy relationship with her husband Drew; about the emotional darkness that was overwhelming Veronica's fragile seventeen-year-old daughter Jude. But seeing her friend laid out on a cold hard slab of steel in a morgue, and hearing the initial judgments of the investigators, Carolyn also knows this: there's no way Veronica would have ever taken her own life. And when Carolyn receives a note threatening her away from the case, she knows a killer is at large. Carolyn must separate lies from truths in a world of complex relationships and battered psyches. As a hidden side of Veronica's life emerges, including the stunning possibility that Veronica had taken a lover, Carolyn becomes increasingly involved with Veronica's daughter, who claims her father has been abusing her for years. Trusting a person she doesn't truly know, putting her own upcoming marriage with wealthy, charming Marcus Wright in jeopardy, Carolyn investigates the brutal murder of another young woman. With danger and deceit swirling all around her, Carolyn is determined to lure her prime suspect out of the shadows. But all the while a killer is coming straight after her...
