Editorial Review:

Joshua Croft wasn’t looking for trouble. It just managed to find him. While Santa Fe private investigator Joshua Croft wasn’t exactly comfortable fencing a stolen diamond necklace, he did have a living to make. But when the small-time cowboy who’d offered him the deal was murdered, Croft knew he was into something hotter than hot ice.

In the posh section of Santa Fe, raw earth is as chic as sushi, and the trail of dirt Croft follows leads to even dirtier secrets, kinky sex, drugs, and double dealings–and a second murder that strikes just a little too close for comfort.

Editorial Review:

When Daniel Begay hires Santa Fe private investigator Joshua Croft, it’s an unusual missing persons case. The silver-haired, distinguished, and more than slightly mysterious Indian wants Joshua to return the lost remains of a Navajo leader, dead nearly a hundred years, to their proper burial site.

Soon Croft is hurtling his trusty Subaru across the Southwest, from Santa Fe to El Paso to remote parts of the Navajo Reservation, unearthing long-buried hostilities and reviving the mystery of an unsolved, unforgotten murder.

“His use of deft characterization, quick pace and plotting, and effective Santa Fe color makes Satterthwaith find.” — Publishers Weekly

Editorial Review:

Santa Fe private detectives Joshua Croft and Rita Mondragon have recently become much more than friends and business partners. When Rita is shot and wounded, perhaps mortally, by the same vicious psychopath who tried to kill her once before, Joshua sets out to find the man. His pursuit takes him from the mountains of New Mexico to a posh Denver suburb, from the bleak plains of Kansas to the sweltering depths of the Florida Everglades. Along the way, he meets a sleazy former prison inmate, an eighty-year-old computer expert, a brutal drug dealer, a somber homicide cop, and a hardened mercenary with a very peculiar hobby.

As Joshua races across the length of the United States toward a final confrontation with a savage killer, he also travels back through his own past, to the beginning of his relationship with the woman who now lies near death.

Often lyrical, frequently funny, always intelligent, Accustomed to the Dark is an unforgettable addition to what Robin Winks of The Boston Globe has described as “one of the best new series in years.”

Editorial Review:

Pinkerton agents Jane Turner and Philip Beaumont have just finished another difficult assignment abroad; now the office is sending them to Germany. Their job: to find the assassin who almost succeeded in killing Adolf Hitler when he was in Berlin.

Their first surprise is a pleasant one---the Nazi big shot assigned to be their guide, Ernst (Putzi) Hanfstaengl, is a huge, jovial man who amazes his guests immediately; his English is almost without any accent! Hanfstaengl has learned American ways during his student days at Harvard. He is a talented pianist and as friendly as a puppy. Jane and Phil have no reason to think his fellow Nazis are not just as personable. This isn't going to be so bad.

Everything starts to go downhill after that, however, although a handsome Nazi almost turns Jane's head with his attentions. Their job becomes a questionable one as the agents see more and more of the new party's dreadful face. A woman who gives them some information is found murdered. There are other deaths, all clearly connected to the Nazi Party. By the time Jane and Phil meet Hitler, they are not only horrified and puzzled about why the Pinkerton agency accepted the job, they are very aware that they are in danger themselves.

Walter Satterthwait has uncannily taken his readers to the Germany of 1923, introducing them to characters from the actual front pages of the period's newspapers---Hanfstaengl, Rudolf Hess, and many others. As in the previous two books of this series, the crimes that Turner and Beaumont encounter are committed against a genuinely historical background. It all adds up to a suspenseful story of two likable people at risk in the treacherous atmosphere of Germany's postwar nightmare.

Well done round robin mystery 5 out of 5 stars.

Between the world wars, the aristocracy tries to return to what they once had. In Rutfordshire, Daisy the Dowager Duchess of Faughstrayne hosts a weekend party with an eclectic assortment of guests. Among the attendees are wealthy American Admiral Cornelius Brandon and his son Whitchell, and the Duchess? neighbor Sir Gerry. The latter finds the murdered corpse of the Admiral.

Sir Gerry considers himself an amateur sleuth so he decides to investigate the situation after notifying Chief Inspector Reggie Arbuthnot of the homicide. Reggie wants Sir Gerry to stay out of the case except as a witness because he is jealous that the amateur always solves cases before he can.

Sir Gerry finds the body of the next victim Consuella, the new Duchess of Faughstrayne. More deaths follow and soon Reggie realizes that several of the guests are not what they seem and also have motives, but which one would kill still remains unsolved.

THE SUNKEN SAILOR is a round robin work in which fourteen authors provide a chapter that leads to the next writer?s segment. This results in many unexpected twists and turns in a plot that showcases several different writing styles that somehow blends together into a fine cohesive storey line that is a treat for readers.

Editorial Review:

During a weekend house party in a proper English village, a body is discovered at the bottom of a pond tied to a submerged statue of Neptune.

And the weekend has only just begun.

So has this ingenious mystery-a literary game of round robin in which fourteen master crime writers have each contributed a chapter of their own. What they deliver is a wildly entertaining whodunit with as many dizzying twists, turnabouts, double-crosses, and divergent styles as there are solutions and suspects.

Excellent until end..., then even better 5 out of 5 stars.

A great, insightful read throughout, but Miss Lizzie ends as surprisingly and satisfyingly as any mystery I've read. Squeamish readers may be put off by the very grisly murders, but the novel works as a mystery, as a reconsideration of history and as a coming-of-age story.

I understand that original hardback versions of this are much prized and very hard to find, but the price of the paperback does seem curiously high.

shocking ending to a compelling mystery 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent fictionalized account of what happened to Lizzie Borden after the notorious trial. On one level, it's a bittersweet story of an unlikely friendship between a shunned old woman and a child, and, on another level, it's a compelling tale of a suspenseful summer. The sly ending will surprise you!

Whether you've read a lot about Lizzie Borden or nothing, you'll really like this finely crafted mystery.

Editorial Review:

When her neighbor is brutally hacked to death, the infamous Lizzie Borden becomes the prime suspect. In her search for the real killer, she uncovers not only the secrets that lie beneath the sleepy surface of a small seaside town, but finally the truth of what happened thirty years before, when her own parents were viciously murdered.

A great pursuit novel 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Santa Fe has always been a primary character in Walter Satterthwait's annals of Joshua Croft and Rita Mondragon. In *Accustomed to the Dark* it becomes a bittersweet backdrop to a contemporary tragedy and a poignant past. We learn in flashbacks what happened years ago to cripple Rita and how Joshua tracked the attacker down and put him in jail. As Joshua remembers the past he must take the same journey again. Scenes of his pursuit of the attacker mingle with reminiscences of Croft's early days in Santa Fe and his relationship with Rita. This time Rita is near death's door. Joshua tries to define his life while he flees what he fears will happen. Because of this, he makes a nearly fatal mistake. This is well-written, taut with suspense, as we follow Joshua across Colorado, Kansas, Texas and finally into Florida as he seeks two truly evil men. There is a whiff of the valedictory about this book

Editorial Review:

Any visitor who has ever been seduced by the charms of Santa Fe should read Satterthwait's Joshua Croft mysteries (Escapade and Wall of Glass are available in paperback) before deciding to move there. Not that the author doesn't love his native city; he just knows that crime and violence may be lurking around the next glitzy corner. Six years ago, a thug named Ernie Martinez killed Croft's boss, William Mondragon, and crippled Mondragon's wife, Rita. Now Rita has made it out of her wheelchair, and she and Croft have become lovers. But Martinez escapes from prison and shoots Rita. While she swings between life and death, Croft sets off on a foolhardy but inevitable search for Martinez and his even more dangerous drug-lord friend. Bristling wit and the pain of endangered love make Satterthwait an original voice.

Editorial Review:

At a meeting of thirteen of Santa Fe's leading New Age healers, Quentin Bouvier, a magician and possibly a reincarnated Egyptian pharaoh, has been hanged from the rafters. He outbid Leonard Quarry for astrologer Eliza Remington's antique tarot card and now he's dead and the tarot card is missing. The police quickly arrest Giacamo Bernardi, a tarot reader, and charge him with the murder and theft. Bernardi's court-appointed attorney hires private investigator Joshua Croft to prove Bernardi's innocence. Suspects from the meeting and the community abound, including astrologers and psychics, a young hermit immersed in "Spiritual Alchemy," an aging movie star who acts as a medium for an entity from Alpha Centauri, a Native American shaman who gets accountants in touch with their warrior within, and a mysterious Asian woman whose equally mysterious brother displays a near-lethal familiarity with martial arts.

My newest favorite author 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was a novel of discovery for me--my first Walter Satterthwait Joshua Croft mystery. This is a seamless novel: character is fleshed out by action and dialogue; the plots are intricate, complex, and interwoven. The result is a believable story with an authentic main character, Joshua Croft. The setting is strong with a contrast between the urban sprawl and smog of LA with the clear skies and tight communities of Sante Fe and other New Mexican cities. At times, it seemed as if Sante Fe was a character that goaded other characters into action.

As improbable as they are--sexual child abuse, murder, assassins from Central America, shadowy American government officials, and illegal aliens, are handled deftly by Satterthwait.

The mysteries are sustained right up to the end of the book, which again speaks to the author's skill to keep the reader engaged.

Do not start reading this book late at night as you wil be up all night.

Editorial Review:

When television star Roy Alonzo is accused by his ex-wife of sexually abusing their young daughter, Roy hires Santa Fe private investigator Joshua Croft to find mother and daughter, clear his name, and save his career. The trail leads from Beverly Hills to a commune in northern New Mexico, with mysteries proliferating as the journey goes on.
