Shankman's got Suth'rin in her bones 5 out of 5 stars.

When I say that Sarah Shankman has done a Carl Hiaasen in this book, I don't mean she's copied him in any way. She's an original. But she, like Mr H and almost no one else, understands that particularly curious form of logic, aspiration, and reality in which southerners live, a world view which northern and western folk think of as "insanity." Angels and devils figure prominently in what we call their mythos and they (southerners) call their lives. Strange forces abound. And get this clear -- this is not a case of Ms Shankman using these extra-normal events to drag one bit of plot or another in by its hiney -- my admiration is because she understands how these events figure into the lives of those wonderful people. And unlike Hiaasen's people, some of Ms Shankman's people are actually admirable, although venality certainly abounds. I have enjoyed all the previous Sam Adams books, but this one goes into a whole new level. I can tell from reviews (all positive) whether or not the writer has ever lived in the south and seen it from an outsider point of view. Those who haven't quibble about some things. Those who have lived there in that way read this book and laugh and say, "That's what I mean, that's what it was, that's what I was trying to put my finger on." Thank you, Ms Shankman. You're welcome to come to my house for dinner any time.

Editorial Review:

In her witty, southern-fried suspense novels, Sarah Shankman delivers nonstop action with a hilarious bite. Now she sends her acclaimed, irreverent heroine -- New Orleans writer Samantha Adams -- to a southwestern New Age hot spot, to unearth a secret past that was supposed to be six feet under.

My dearest Sugar. I must see you. It's urgent. I need your help. The letter that arrived from Sam's mother was postmarked Santa Fe, penned in her mother's handwriting, and disclosed details only Johanna Adams could know. There was just one catch: Johanna Adams had been dead for thirty-four years.

The mind-blowing missive could have been an entry from Sam's latest book of bizarre anecdotes, American Weird -- or an elaborate hoax. Either way, it instantly rekindled Sam's impossible wish that her mother hadn't really died in a plane crash when Sam was a child. Fueled by her journalistic instincts -- and a daughter's need for closure -- Sam touches down among Santa Fe's tourists and crystal gazers, jewelry shops and fast-food stands. But only when she summons the courage to knock on the door of Room 409 at the La Fonda Hotel does her surreal, mother-seeking adventure take off with no turning back.

Excellent anthology 5 out of 5 stars.

Steal magnolias seem feeble next to the titanium magnolias that make up this superb collection. The twelve stories center on the more menacing southern perspective where murder and mayhem are just another mint julep. Locales vary from big cities like Atlanta to small rural towns, but each entry is fun to read.

Some of the leading mystery writers of today have contributed clever entries to A CONFEDERACY OF CRIME: New Stories of Southern Style Mystery. The stories run the gamut from private and police investigatioons to the iron-fisted Twiddle, but each indulges fans of anthologies and regional mysteries with a distinct taste of the underside of the South.

About half way through this funny book, I decided it wasn't a mystery. But then the end took me by complete surprise! Highly recommend for those who like a little comedy with their mysteries...

Sam Adams does it again 5 out of 5 stars.

I never got this book fully until I moved to Louisiana- people do take food seriously in the South, and guard barbeque and other recipies as great secrets. My mother-in-law has been trying to get a BBQ recipie for years from one of her friends who refuses to tell her. So this book is a bit educational for people who aren't from the South. Shankman knows her stuff. And if you love the Sam Adams series, you'll love this book. I love the twists in the story- so many Elvis connections!
If you love 'Q', mysteries and Elvis, this is the book for you!(and even if you don't, its still a great book!)

lotsa fun 4 out of 5 stars.

i got this title at the dollar store! needed a lurid, fast, vacation read and got in spades. shankman's tendency toward comma splices takes a little getting used to, but i loved this guilty-pleasure potboiler, filled with elvis arcana, southern culture, and tacky, lively characters who dovetail entertainingly. the ending's baroque and a bit predictable, but leaves you wondering. was he...? could he've been...? hmmm... definitely worth a buck, and made me want to read more from this author.

While at a barbecue cookoff in Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis, crime reporter Samantha Adams and her boyfriend Harry Zack encounter some eccentric southern mayhem. K.

Not a talented writer. I met her once. She described her books, as Southern, funny, mysteries. Wrong.
Amazon requires at least one star. That is one star too many.

funny and interesting! 4 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book! It's set in Georgia and the author's voice is authentic. The characters were well chosen and well developed. The plot was interesting with an unexpected twist. If you're looking for some light southern humor, with a slightly dark twist, you'll probably enjoy this. I liked it enough to track down the next 5 books in this series and to buy them!

Editorial Review:

Writing as Alice Storey, Shankman first introduced Atlanta journalist/detective Samantha Adams in this critically acclaimed mystery. When a distinguished attorney is found murdered, Sam delves into a scandal of dirty money and adultry that stretches from Atlanta's society salons to the saloons of the "good old boys." Reissue.
