acccurate view of the art world 4 out of 5 stars.

Though my interest in mysteries generally runs to Elizabeth George, Amanda Cross and Pd James, I was attracted to the title of this book. Generally the art world is very superficially and inaccurately treated in books, but I found this one quite on the mark. It had a very up to date feeling to it and Steinberg had a nicely ironic tone that set up the rivalries of academic, artworld and workplace situations. The author created some very compelling characters and situations. In fact I found the characters so interesting I was disappointed the book wasn't longer and that she didn't describe more about them, in the manner of Elizabeth George and PD James. The plot moved along very well and kept me guessing and I am only sorry it wasn't a longer book with more details about the characters.

Editorial Review:

Public Radio Reporter Margo Simon interviews a group of eccentric young artists, just before beautiful Susan Contreras is found dead in her own exhibit, and soon wonders if another would commit murder to make an artistic statement.

A good read 4 out of 5 stars.

Reporter Margo Simon has still not recovered from the fire she was in last year. The last thing she needs at this time is more stress. Unfortunately, she goes into overload when her spouse and his diving partner pull a dead body from the water. Margo recognizes the deceased as Hob Schreiber, an oceanographer, who loved causes more than men (except in the biblical sense). Hob was a promiscuous gay who had more enemies than friends.

When it is discovered that Hob was murdered, there is an overabundance of suspects who wanted the caustic professor dead. When Margo comes upon the drowned body of a graduate student, she feels that there is a link to the Hob murder and begins to investigate the two deaths. However, the killer will do anything to keep Margo from learning the truth, even if it means killing her.

Janice Steinberg's latest addition to the Margo Simon series is an intellectually stimulating who-done-it. Part cozy, part amateur sleuth, and part academic mystery, THE DEAD MAN AND THE SEA will appeal to a wide range of mystery fans. This work reads like a modern Americanized version of an Agatha Christie novel, challenging the reader to ferret out the killer's identity. This book is an entertaining way to spend a cozy fall day.

Editorial Review:

Margo is shocked when the body of skilled sailor Hob Schreiber is pulled from the water. The sea was his element. How could he have drowned? But Margo soon learns that death came before Hob even hit the water--and at someone else's hands.

This excellent book transcends genre fiction. 5 out of 5 stars.

As a mystery fiction junkie who also happens to be a Jewish educator, this book satisfied me on many levels. The author has managed to transplant the wonderful Margo Simon into a completely foreign culture without missing a beat. Unlike Steinberg's previous books, when we were most dazzled with Margo's strength of character and her personal development, this book gives us a wonderful opportunity to see Margo as a part of a far bigger circle of life - as a daughter - a sister - a wife and stepmother - a Jew struggling with her religious identity - and of course as the premier sleuth we've come to expect. Margo ends up in the ancient Israeli city of Safed after her mother falls seriously ill. Her mother has unexpectedly left a tour group to study with a teacher of Jewish mysticism and has seemed to have found a new meaning in her life which leaves Margo both puzzled and pleased. Unfortunately, the teacher is angering the religious establishment with her teachings and her students worry constantly about her safety. Margo is initially suspicious of her mother's illness, and when Batsheva, her mother's teacher, is killed, the detective in Margo will not be stopped. Permeating the entire book is both accurate and meaningful material on the Kabbalah as well the humorous family dynamic between Margo and her sister Audrey. The combination in lesser hands wouldn't work, but Steinberg balances the two, while never losing sight of the mystery at the core of the novel. This is a book with dozens of layers - each enhancing the next - and anyone who dives into it will come away satisfied.

Editorial Review:

The newest book in a series praised as "fascinating" (Carolyn Wheat) and "witty and moving" (Grounds for Murder)...San Diego Public Radio reporter Margo Simon returns in Janice Steinberg's most exciting novel to date. Margo's mother had a bad fall. But when it's tied to poisonous herbs mixed into her tea, Margo must ponder who would want to hurt her mother. For what happened was no accident...
