So Good!! Why is it the Only Tory Book Out of Print?? 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is the second in the Tory/South Dakota series...and the only one of the series to be out of print!! Why I don't know, because you need to read this book to really get into the whole series.

The series is set in a small South Dakota town. Tory, the main character is a fat waitress at the town's only cafe. Her roommate, Del, is a nympho, who sleeps with everybody who moves. Tory's best friend is Neil, the local millionaire librarian.

This wonderful book naturally centers around people sleeping around and getting wonderfully ill.

Tory's cousin, annoyingly upright Junior, faints from food poisoning in the cafe, leaving Tory in charge of the town celebration's carnival. So Tory must go and preview the carnival in another town and report back to Junior. Tory hitches a ride to the carnival with her married lover, Stu. Along the way, they have an afternoon tryst where the witness some other shenanigans, which open up the can of worms. That is where the fun begins.

We get to meet different interesting members of the carnival..

Editorial Review:

When the remains of real murder victims are discovered among the grisly special effects at the amusement park horror house, forty-something waitress and amateur sleuth Tory Bauer finds a mystery in the Hall of Mirrors.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

What a great series. I am so puzzled by one reader's trashing of this book on political reasons?? I always thought if you didn't like a book, put it down, don't insult others who might enjoy it. Which I certainly did!!

Fun read! 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved the quirky main characters, each of them endearing in their own way. The dialogue is down to earth, and the writing is witty and light. The plot is full of clues, but the ending still comes as a surprise. This book is sure to please.

A Real Page-Turner with Quirky, Lovable Characters 5 out of 5 stars.

After this book, I became a Tory Bauer fan and will look for the other books in this series. Tory is a bright, smart-alecky, lovable character that you root for. The story was very well thought out, and the ending was quite a surprise. I never would have guessed it. All in all, quite entertaining.

Editorial Review:

Tory Bauer is the quintessential diner waitress, slopping up greasy food with a hefty side order of cranky attitude. In Mourning Shift the goblins are out for Halloween, and Tory is crabbier than usual. Is it a trick when a mysterious old man dies in the cafe's restroom? Or is it a treat to find out the juicy gossip that he's the cafe owner's long estranged husband? The reluctant heroine saves the day again by discovering the identity of a killer.

Murder Can Kill The Appetite

There aren't many amusements in little Delphi, South Dakota--and that suits Tory Bauer just fine. Widowed, over forty, and somewhat exceeding the surgeon general's weight guidelines, she's content to sling hash at the locals in the Delphi Cafe and craves no additional excitement. Her oversexed fellow waitress and trailer-mate Delphine, however, is always hungry for a new thrill. So when young, good-looking Mormon missionary Charles Winston brings his soul saving fervor to the Cafe's table, Del's all over him like ketchup on fries, totally unconcerned about how her boyfriend--the dangerously short-tempered county deputy, Big Dick Albrecht--will react.

And it's Tory who has to clean up the sloppy mess left behind--because it's she who discovers Winston's corpse stuffed in a mop closet several days later. Tory's large appetite for answers and natural talent for deduction are dumping her into a crockpot of lethal, long-simmering small town secrets. And if she's not careful, she'll wind up in the missionary's position: flat-out, stone-cold dead.

A Very Good Story, But Errors Were A Distraction 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Tory Bauer, waitress, part owner of a small cafe in Delphi, South Dakota and reluctant crime solver has fallen into another sticky situation. A young girl has attempted suicide in the Delphi Café and Tory is off in search of answers. I found a few problems with this, the sixth and most recent of the Tory Bauer Mysteries. I have always enjoyed Tory's introspective breaks in previous novels. They are often humorous and surprisingly insightful. But I think Ms. Taylor went a little overboard with this particular gambit in the first part of the story. It seemed to take too long to get to the meat of the tale. By the time Tory sits down with her friend, Neil Pascoe (they are a perfect match!), to discuss recent events, the story begins to move along at a more satisfying pace. There were several writing errors throughout the book. A few examples: In one sentence, the word make was used in place of the word may. "...lost on the our vast grid...". "...that it would to be up to me...". There were so many of these small errors it was a distraction. The print on several pages was faint and washed out looking. For people with normal vision, this probably doesn't pose a problem, but my eyesight is less than good and I had some difficulty with it. The story is a very good one and I enjoyed catching up with the folks in Delphi. It is a Not To Be Missed addition to this excellent series. I'm sorry to be so critical here, but I am hoping that word will get back to the publisher that Taylor's books deserve better editing and more attention paid to the actual printing process.

Editorial Review:

Ample-bodied, salty-tongued waitress Tory Bauer is no longer taking orders from anyone -- now that she has become co-owner of the only café in tiny Delphi, South Dakota. And since corpses on the premises are bad for business, Tory is understandably peeved when a young Swedish member of a traveling international choral group keels over in one of the booths, leaving a suicide note behind claiming a sexual predator, the Reverend Clay Deibert, drove her to it. Now Tory knows Clay is the straightest of straight arrows -- he's also Tory's cousin by marriage -- and she suspects slutty Meg, the only Canadian in the chorus, is responsible for this mess in some way or another. But when a dead body winds up stuffed into Clay's closet, Tory realizes that clearing the reverend might be tougher than finding a sarong in Saskatchewan. Like the Mounties, however, Tory's determined to get her man (or woman) -- unless the murdering he (or she) gets Tory first.

Editorial Review:

Death is a Party Pooper

Waitress Tory Bauer is good at dishing out food and dishing out gossip. Now it's her steamy secrets that are being dished out all over town. But it's New Years Eve in tiny Delphi, South Dakota, one of the few fun dates on the local calendar. And, bad-mouthed or not, Tory's determined to have a good time partying down. . .even if it kills her! As it turns out, she's not the one who doesn't make it beyond the stroke of midnight.

Suave and handsome Ian O'Hara had only been in town less than a day when his trip was abbreviated by his untimely murder. During his few fateful hours in delphi, however, he had managed to make several "love connections"--including one with Tory's roomate, Del. With pretty much the whole town nursing January 1 hangovers, ever-inquisitive Tory is ready to start her new year off right by hunting down a lothario slayer. But it's the killer's resolution not to get caught. . .and Tory might just be amateur sleuthing herself into an early grave!

Editorial Review:

"In 1969, I, Tory Bauer, was a high school sophomore. For me, a Life and Death issue involved finding a date for Homecoming. The only thing I had in common with the rest of my generation was the notion that love was all we'd need and an unshakable confidence in our own immortality."

"Unfortunately we were wrong on both counts."

"It took a couple of decades, a few tragedies and betrayals, and a windy afternoon standing along the bank of the James River looking down at a dead body in the water for me to realize that the past has a long reach."

"And that high school lasts forever."

for a reading copy, buy Funeral Food 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you simply want to read all of the Tory Bauer mysteries and are not a serious collector, read the readily available "Funeral Food" which is the same story, renamed and published for mass market by Avon.

Read the uncut Funeral Food 5 out of 5 stars.

The Missionary Position is smarter and funnier then Funeral Food. The folks at Avon cut all the laugh out loud adult humor, and Funeral Food is a blander version. Taylor's voice is more original and interesting in this book where she is not being edited by the PC police.
