Great Title - Sort of Predictable 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Great Title and an easy read. However, if you're looking for a challenge..this book is sort of predictable.

the language is really unnecessary! 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

this book is a great mystery and really the only problem I have with it and the writer is the crude language. I really don't think you need all that language just to sound authentic. Most people read to get away from real life. You don't have to have so much of that in the books as well. This is the only reason why I could not, in good conscience, give the book more than 2 stars. Sorry.

Editorial Review:

After ten years of cleaning up the dirt on Atlanta's streets, Callahan Garrity is trading in her badge for a broom and a staff of house cleaners. But, though the uniform is a little different, Callahan soon finds herself right back in the middle of a mystery when a client's pretty, pious nineteen-year-old nanny is gone ... along with the jewelry, silver, and a few rather sensitive real estate documents.

Before she knows it, the meticulous Callahan is up to her elbows in a case involving illicit love triangles, crooked business deals, long-distance scams, and a dead body. Now she has to roll up her sleeves and start some industrial strength sleuthing to solve -- and survive -- this mess.

Tight plotting - generally a good read 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Try this author. She does not have the high public profile of some other female authors but she stands up there with the Graftons and Paretskys. This author has a lovely writing style and has created warm, believable characters. The mystery is compelling but I found myself wanting and enjoying more the dialogue and interaction between the characters.

Trocheck Can't BE Beat 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read all of Kathy Hogan Trocheck's books many many times. She is the best writer of fiction that I have ever read. Callahan is one great sleuth. Also be sure to check out Mary Kay Andrews who is also Kathy Hogan Trocheck.
This book is set in Atlanta and she makes you feel if you are right there with Callahan. If you are familiar with the area, you will recognize a lot of the places that she mentions.

GREAT BOOK!

Editorial Review:

Christmas festivities and family bonding provide the backdrop in this seventh mystery featuring cleaning service owner-operator Callahan Garrity. While Callahan and her mother Edna are busy preparing trifle and a potent Garrity version of eggnog for their annual Christmas bash, Callahan's youngest brother, Brian, appears after a 10-year absence. Edna is thrilled, both with Brian and with the granddaughter he has presented; Callahan is more dubious, particularly when it becomes clear that her brother has been in town for well over a year and that he has taken the 3-year-old Maura without her mother's permission. Callahan, with pressure from Edna, agrees to help Brian fight the custody battle against his ex, but things only get more complicated once the woman is found stabbed to death. Police, not surprisingly, put Brian at the top of their list of likely suspects. After all, if he is willing to commit one felony by kidnapping his daughter, what's to prevent him from murdering her mother?

Despite overtones of O.J.--Brian is also accused of occasionally resorting to violence--there is much to enjoy here: Edna's toilet-training philosophy, Maura's precociousness, and the suburban South's peculiar social dimensions (just what constitutes white trash, anyway?) provide much to chuckle over. Callahan and her band of merry mop-bearers take on the police, Brian's mother-in-law, and even Brian himself to demonstrate his innocence so that he can stay out of jail and secure custody. Callahan is an admirable and entertaining heroine. Kathy Hogan Trocheck has a lighter touch than Sarah Paretsky or Sue Grafton, and Callahan is rarely as unforgivably foolhardy as counterparts V.I. Warshawski or Kinsey Milhone can be. With Callahan and her more charming relations at the novel's heart, Midnight Clear offers jolly holiday reading with both poignant and hilarious moments. --K. Crouch

I am rather dissapointed in this Kathy Hogan Trocheck book. 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I love the character of Callahan Garrity and have found myself eagerly looking forward to each of Kathy Hogan Trocheck's books. As a former resident of Atlanta, I have appreciated the accuracy of her work in capturing the true flavor of the city especially the Little Five Points area and its residents. I reluctantly say that this book was not nearly the quality of material I have come to expect from this author. The story line seemed rather implausible and the character development was nil. I would reccomend this book to die hard Callahan fans but would caution them not to expect too much.

Editorial Review:

A taste for trouble

Cleaning lady cum sleuth Callahan Garrity has cautiously watched her seedy bohemian Atlanta neighborhood morph into a trendy haven for yuppies. But just as she fears, too much cappuccino and new money can be a bad mix. When the young owner of a microbrewery looking to score prime real estate turns up dead, neighborhood local Wuvvy, an aging flower child and the brewer's bitterest foe, becomes the prime suspect. Digging for evidence to clear Wuvvy, Callahan isn't prepared for the succulent secrets she finds--shocking truths that force her to reassess old friendships and an old love--as even deadlier developments surface.

A Great Series! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I love this series and it simply gets better and better. If you're new to this series, take advantage and begin at the beginning. The stories are interesting without being overly done or contrived. The characters are complex and welcomed visitors. Trocheck really has something here.

Doughnuts and crack 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I came to this one after "Every Dead Nanny" and "Happy Never After" so for once I'm reading a series in the right order. I thought this was the best of the three. The plot is believable from beginning almost to the end (I never quite buy those heroine-save-in-the-nick-of-time scenes but they seem obligatory in this female private eye genre which is a descendant of romantic suspense). It unfolds piece by piece rather than being a series of interviews and the murderer is the kind of surprise that has you turning back pages and saying "why didn't I think of that?" Some great writing. I loved a scene where she describes a vivid temptation to buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts and then looks across the street and describes a crack-buying transaction.

Editorial Review:

The fifth novel in an acclaimed series featuring cleaning lady/sleuth Callahan Garrity.

Atlanta takes time out from its pre-Olympic frenzy to obsess about the murder case of Whitney Dobbs. A boozy socialite, Whitney earned the wrath of the city when she killed a little girl in a hit-and-run. When Whitney is shot while doing her community service, Callahan is suspicious about the victim's ex-husband. Callahan gets help from her House Mouse cleaning team to track down one mean, mad killer.

Average if best 2 out of 5 stars.

This plot driven farce, is wieghed down with banal dialogue that makes me cridge each time I saw any quotation marks. But, for a "mystery" novel, in which the outcome seems to be told to you from the beginning, it cannot be given a "1 Star" rating b/c that would be for a book that was trying to say something, and no effort is put forth in the words that are strew across the pages with the accuracity and grace of a granite boulder.

Editorial Review:

In her former life as an Atlanta cop, Callahan Garrity trusted no one more than her partner, Bucky Deavers. Now, when her old friend asks her to go to the annual St. Paddy's Day bash, she can't say no. Looking for fun, Callahan gets the shock of her life instead. Bucky is shot in a liquor store on the way home.

Stunned but clear-headed, the tenacious PI turns on all her skills to find the culprit. What she discovers, though, are accusations that Bucky might be working both sides of the law as an accomplice In a string of robberies.

With her friend's life and reputation hanging in the balance, Callahan , her mom, Edna, and her feisty band of House Mouse employees kick the investigation into high gear, using their unorthodox methods to get answers. This time, it will take every skill they've got to pierce the veil of secrecy surrounding an Irish police organization and prove that the case is more than it seems.

A Cut Above 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

These may be considered cozies, but they have a distinct edge. The characters are fun, but also well developed, and the plots are decent. The characters and their personalities are complex. The books improve as they go along. I was panting for the last one, "Irish Eyes." I even bought the hardback. Am waiting for the next one. Begin at the beginning if you can, but not necessary.

Quick and easy. 4 out of 5 stars.

The thing I enjoyed most about this book was the pace of the story. It didn't drag on and on with pages of boring details. Even though it was a fairly quick read, there was enough information about people's surroundings, the family connections, etc., to make it interesting and hold the reader's attention. As for the whodunnit, that was fairly easy to figure out, but it didn't take away from the book. I will definitely take the time to read more books by this author.

Fun, fun, fun 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Snappy dialog, whiz-bang action sequences, and a lovably flawed heroine: a perfect recipe for a fizzy, frothy concoction of mystery and pop music business primer.

The "first tier" characters have plenty of sizzle amongst themselves, but things really shine when the supporting cast shows up for a birthday party or a housecleaning expedition. (You don't want me to say more than that, truly.) Dialog sings, not only as entertainment but also in actually advancing the plot. I learned to pay attention through my giggles and sighs; the plot was moving on.

This author writes hilarious vignettes that evoke everything from the slightly soused country club golfers to the fear and loathing of staking out a boyfriend who might be sleeping with his ex-wife. The most far-fetched circumstances are related with such a light touch that it is easy to suspend disbelief. Put differently, you won't believe what you'll believe in this story.

For the most part, the various threads are tidied up by the end of the book. I admire and appreciate the fact that the author did not force a happy ending for everything. Altogether this was a satisfying and delightful read.

Good sexagerian 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Unlike the Garrity books this is a thriller not a mystery. We know who did the murder from the beginning and we are given some of the story from the viewpoint of the villains. Kicklighter and Jackleen are great characters and there's much insight into being a retired male and someone living on minimum wage. The Fountain of Youth Hotel and Bondurant Motors are well done. My trouble was with the villains - well they're fairly good villains but three other Florida thriller-writers have given us great villains. I kept comparing this with Leonard's "Maximum Bod" and Hiaasen's "Striptease" and Willeford's "Miami Blue." I know they were set on the opposite coast but it's all one state to me. The car talk was good but Seranella does it better. Making these comparisons knocked off a star but this is excellent page-turning entertainment. Did they ever open the trunk of the pink Cadillac?

Editorial Review:

Retired reporter Truman Kicklighter, flushed with the success of his first adventure (Lickety-Split), once again breaks out of the Fountain of Youth Residential Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. Almost immediately he finds himself up to his neck in hot water as he and a young woman who works at the rest home track down a used car scam that soon becomes deadly. Blessedly, there's nothing cute about Kathy Trocheck's creation-here is a senior citizen who is as crotchety as he is smart.
