Dry Ice Didn't Hold Freshness 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ok, I will admit I haven't liked Mr. White's books for awhile. His prior "Kill Me", I enjoyed thoroughly which proves he is a fine author but might want to let Dr. Gregory rest for now. In "Dry Ice" I figured let's see if he can grab me with Gregory. No and no. His wife has MS, we know we all know it is a terrible disease but from almost the first book I have found her to be a royal pain. The good doctor does everything to accommodate and comfort her and still she is always pissed off at him about something. More of this comes out in Dry Ice. Yes they have a conflict of interests due to his patient/client privilege and hers as a prosecutor, but still the title should have been Deep Freeze because that is how Lauren Gregory treats her husband. The plot is there, an old nemesis is loose and they are all targets, including their police friend, Sam. The story drags on to its conclusion with a lot of bending of the law. It hurt me to give it even 3 stars, but he is a good author. He just needs a new protagonist. Don't read unless you are a fan of mountain descriptions.

Information blocked (3.75 *s) 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Boulder clinical psychologist Alan Gregory is shocked when his patient Karen Hart commits suicide, especially since she had apparently been making considerable progress in therapy. But even more disturbing are reports in the newspaper from anonymous sources that he was intimately involved with the patient, a clear violation of professional standards. Beyond this scenario, the book serves as an introduction to the lengthy Gregory series and to the Boulder, CO area, where it seems there is a staggering preponderance of professionals.

The allegations hurt his practice, driving away some patients, but worse over the next few months two more patients die: one in an auto accident and one murdered. Other incidents occur and Alan begins to suspect the involvement of a new patient. But investigations are stymied when issues of patient confidentiality prevent Alan from being forthcoming with his attorney, Boulder detective Sam Purdy, and assistant DA Lauren Crowder. There is a certain amount of edification in this situation as Alan is convinced that transference, even psychotic, is at work.

Alan's professional difficulties come at a time when his private life is very unsettled. His television producer wife Meredith now lives in San Francisco with their remaining tie being Cicero, their dog. He is intrigued by Lauren, but her sudden revelation of a debilitating medical condition is perspective shifting, to say the least. The Boulder area is well described including its notoriety for being a bicycling capital, a passion for Alan.

The plot is not the strongest part of the book: some loose ends and not quite believable and consistent. However, overall the book is interesting, especially the characters, and moves at a decent pace and is actually rather suspenseful. The author establishes characters that are sufficiently appealing to encourage reading of the next installment.

Editorial Review:

Clinical psychologist Alan Gregory faces disgrace and ruin when several of his attractive female clients die untimely deaths. But professional ethics prevent Gregory from revealing the "privileged information" that will clear his name and perhaps save his life-since the killer responsible for these deaths may be one of his patients.

Excellent as always 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This isn't the best of the Alan Gregory series, but it's still better than most of the other books I've read in the past year. I learned more than I wanted to know about theatre, and having Peter gruesomely killed depressed me, but the mystery was top-notch.

I suspect that the novel would be less enjoyable for readers who missed the first three of the series, so buy the others, too. And don't stop here; the series keeps getting better with each new book. I've already pre-ordered Kill Me, number 14, to be released in March.

Another exciting book from Stephen White... 5 out of 5 stars.

Stephen White has the courage to kill off a beloved recurring character in the first chapter! Another novel about beautiful Boulder, Colorado, fascinating lessons in psychology and a story that will surprise you with its ending. You won't be able to put this book down.

Editorial Review:

In this novel of "fascinating psychological suspense" (San Francisco Chronicle), Dr. Alan Gregory follows a trail of harrowing secrets, naked violence, and hidden shame into the haunted heart of a friend he thought he knew. And now, what Alan still doesn't know might kill him.

Good story, but it shouldn't include a street guide 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a good page-turner including mystery and psycholgy. But the writer choose to include too many "street guide" details on locations. Sometimes reading the book felt like reading driving directions from Mapquest! It's good do descibe the surroundings, but not to that level of detail.

Editorial Review:

Sometimes the warning signs come too late...

The brutal slaying of Boulder’s controversial D.A. strikes deep in the heart of everything clinical psychologist Alan Gregory holds dear: After all, Alan’s wife, Lauren, worked for the dead man.

When a new patient walks into Alan’s office--a terrified mother with an explosive secret--he finds himself edging even closer to the darkness. Soon her privileged exchanges convince Alan that a crime is about to be committed. And when he uncovers a shocking link to the D.A.’s slaying, Alan is suddenly locked in the ethical dilemma of his career, thrust into a desperate manhunt for a killer whose identity no one could have guessed.

As the minutes tick down, Warning Signs explodes into a gripping story of crime and punishment, tragedy and retribution--and of human beings caught in the shattering cross fire of forces beyond their control...forces sometimes within themselves.

Solid Thriller 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Another Dr. Alan Gregory mystery. Intersting plot twists. A growing pile of missing persons. What I enjoy most about Mr. White's novels are the psychiatric pathologies of his "clients" and this one has some good pathology. There is probably too much hand wringing about ethics for my blood but A GOOD, QUICK READ!!

Pretty Bad 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Funny thing: my guilty pleasure is pop fiction stuff like Stephen White or Patterson or whoever the trendy pop writer is. I love a quick read, a non-thinker, a throw-disbelief-out-the-window experience.

But Missing Persons fails to reach even such banal reading expectations.

The first word that comes to mind is lazy. After having picked up Missing Persons, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I have read many of White's other novels. That said, this is a weak one, and one that hobbles on an all-too-familiar crutch in a sad attempt to propel a story:

Jon Benet Ramsey.

Just freakin say it! Or type it! Do you have any idea how insulting it is to the reader to continually refer to such a commonly known historic episode and try to dance around it without saying it? Give me a break!

I'm going to write a novel based upon the murder of a former pro football player's wife and her supposed lover. The former baller husband is then going to flee in a dramatic slow-speed chase scene in a white Bronco. And it is going to take place in Los Angeles! What do you mean that you've heard all this before? My story parallels the OJ story! But it is a little bit different! It really is different! (Sheesh!)

I can't believe I'm doing this, but in all honestly, tonight I threw this book into the garbage bin, after reading only up to page 173 (paperback version). The continual and overt references to the JonBenet thing were so insipid that I couldn't stomach it anymore.

I read a lot. I read everything that I read from beginning to end. Not this time. What a joke. This is the perfect example of jumping the shark. If I ever buy another Stephen White novel, I'm the fool for it.

Disappointed for certain.

Editorial Review:

Psychologist Alan Gregory finds his own colleague dead, while one of her patients-a young girl-has gone missing from Boulder on Christmas Day. With the police baffled, the answers to both cases may be locked inside the mind of a deeply disturbed client Alan has been treating. Running a maze of dilemmas, Alan takes a bold risk that will cost him his career-or his life.

Editorial Review:

Tom Clone's stay on death row is over, thanks to new evidence uncovered by Kelda James, a young FBI agent whose efforts on Clone's behalf have not exactly endeared her to her colleagues. Referred by that same agent to psychologist Alan Gregory, Clone is struggling to adapt to life outside prison. But others who believe he got off on a technicality don't agree that the former medical student deserves his freedom, and they will go to any lengths to make sure he's punished accordingly for the crime of which he was once accused. There are some surprising plot twists here, but more interesting is Gregory's midlife crisis and his declining interest in his work: as his partner responds when he voices doubts about his efficacy as a therapist, "Those are the bricks we lay. If you've started hating the bricks, maybe it's time to reconsider being a brick layer." Certainly Gregory gets himself into more sinister and frightening scrapes than most shrinks, and this is one of his strangest cases. The Best Revenge is a solid, well-reasoned thriller, set in the marvelously drawn Colorado landscape the author has made his own, with guest appearances by minor figures familiar to readers of this increasingly popular psychological suspense series. --Jane Adams

Well written and dreadfully dull 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I appreciate good writing, I really do. This novel delivers that; White brings the characters alive quite well and weaves a good narrative that ties them all together naturally with very believable encounters. The trouble is, there's nothing interesting about them. It's a dull story, and that's really disappointing. I don't think I'm going to give up on White as an author, maybe I just chose the book to get acquainted with him.

COLD CASE 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In this 8th addition to the series, Dr. Alan Gregory and his pregnant wife, Lauren Crowder are asked to offer their services to a volunteer based law enforcement agency by the name of Locard. The agency members have voted in agreement to take on their next assignment - to solve a mystery that is about a dozen years cold. It was 1988 when two high school friends, Tami and Miko were murdered. With Lauren's legal input and Alan's expertise as a clinical psychologist, the group of mixed professionals enthusiastically start their investigation.

This was neither my favorite nor least favorite book of the series so far. While it kept my interest, it lacked some of the energy and charm that I found with previous installments. We didn't get to see Alan at work in his downtown office and I actually missed the interaction between Dr. Gregory and his patients.

I do have to say this...for such a wimpy hero, Alan sure does find himself in a mountain of danger and often. He constantly worries about getting into trouble with his wife, he cannot stomach blood and guts, and when dire circumstances require that he handle a gun, he needs help turning the safety off! Nevertheless, for such a wimpy hero, he sure is lovable.

Editorial Review:

In this classic, early novel from the popular Alan Gregory series, a cold case gets hot as the crime-solving psychologist investigates a decade-old double homicide that will threaten the guilty-and endanger the innocent.

1st Stephen White/Alan Gregory Read 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A bit disappointing. Not a difficult plot but so many discursions. Every remark or observation seems to require a psychological analysys. Many, I felt, rather sophomoric reflections by both Sam and Alan when meeting various ladies along the way. Laurens MS, Sam's heart attack, his marital problems, etc., etc.. Give me a break!
Not bad but could have been a lot neater. Will try again later.

Editorial Review:

Boulder psychologist Alan Gregory hasn't seen former patient Gibbs Storey since she and her husband were in marriage counseling with him almost a decade ago. So when she walks into his office with a startling declaration--that she believes her husband murdered at least one woman, and may be planning to kill more--Gregory finds himself on the horns of a dilemma that's not just professional but personal as well: He can't reveal what his patient has told him, not even to his wife, who's a prosecutor, or his friend Sam, who's a cop. What's more, his feelings for Gibbs may be clouding his judgment about the truth of what she professes. Though he telegraphs the denouement too early, Stephen White once again turns in a thoughtful, well crafted novel full of interesting insights on marriage, friendship, the human condition, and the Colorado landscape. --Jane Adams

Higher Authority 3 out of 5 stars.

I'd recommend this book to anybody who is interested in learning more about, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a.k.a. The Mormon Church. If nothing else, the background information about the church made it worthwhile. The Mormon religion certainly has a strange history and some questionable practices. However, I think any large organized religion could be an interesting backdrop for a novel of this genre. We all know that churches are capable of abuses of power and cover-ups. We all know that gross injustices and crimes are committed all the time in the name of God.

I have no regrets about reading this book; all in all it was pretty good, even though it was a slower read than Stephen White's first two books in this series. The next book in line, goes back to featuring Dr. Gregory, I think I will like that more than this installment which, demonstrated Lauren as the main character.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Alan Gregory's fianceƩ, attorney Lauren Crowder, is thrown into a maelstrom of violence as a case of sexual harassment strikes a devastating chord among the nation's most powerful leaders. But this legal time bomb explodes when crucial evidence disappears-and a killer strikes.

Outstanding!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my first book by Stephen White, but not the last. The plot is excellent with many twists and turns to keep me interested, not confused. It sees Dr. Gregory trying to help a young girl who may or may not have killed in order for her sister to get critical health care. However, readers shouldn't despair as it is not full of medical language or too much cumbersome details. I give this book a well deserved five star rating.

My second Stephen White book (Priviledged Information) and I wasn't disappointed. A great read and would recommend reading it after "Privileged." I really like Dr. Alan Gregory's character. Smart, ethical and compassionate. A wonderful author
